- ABANDONED LUXURY ISLAND RESORT - sailing Maldives
Since I was a child I have dreamt of staying in a overwater bungalow on a tropical island. This week my dream comes true when I have the pick of bungalows. The only catch is this is an abandoned ghost resort in the Maldives. The crumbling architecture still hints to the outstanding, top shelf, materials that were used to develop this resort until the company, unfortunately, ran out of money, and just walked away from the project, abandoning the half finished villas, as they were, to rot in the elements. Come with us as we explore what is left of this ghost resort.

BACK STORY
In 1997, after rowing at the Atlanta Olympics, Rob rowed a tiny 7m (22 foot) plywood boat 2,500 miles from Tenerife (Canary Islands) to Barbados (Caribbean). It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race.
Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of.
The plan? To sail around the world.
Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz

If only the developers had asked a reasonable sale price, then this resort might be operating today.

I’m with Rachel’s thinking - happy with whatever. Even my Kiwi friends who say they would never go camping…were they not brought up as Kiwi kids???Whats happened !! Enjoy the luxury while its on offer and appreciate what u have the rest of the time where your day to day experience is better than luxury.
Agreed
The earth reclaims it's space as folks pull back and allow it. You all do live the life of many peoples dreams. I have finally started solid plans for getting myself into a sailboat in 7 years. I do enjoy watching the lot of y'all! Continued good heath and fair winds to you all.
Thank you, Preston, and good on you for locking in the goal. Is there any way of shortening the timeline?
There isn't enough risk management assessment done. All about how much money they can make. End result is debris on a beautiful island. They should have been made to get it back to its original state!!! Now is pollution.
Yeah very disappointing. The ideal would have been to sell at a realistic price to keep the project going.
It’s insane the amount of economic waste there is ,I’m surprised the government didn’t enforce clean up through the builders insurance companies.oh and happy anniversary guys.
We agree. The whole island is covered in crumbling, half finished buildings.
As an Indian I got to skip this video and don't watch anything which convinces me to visit Maldives 😂
Yes we heard that Indian tourists are turning away from Maldives as a tourist destination after some political shenanigans. It’s a shame. We have found the people here to be lovely.
@@TheCruisingKiwisthey have python hugs. Jihadi is always a jihadi.
@@TheCruisingKiwis It's a shame on you to force this destination on Indians.
The muck could be lovely for the pigs but not for humans.
Hence It's who you are.
As Indians, we continue to boycott this place.
@TheCruisingKiwis there is a lot of bias agst Indians on religious grounds and our beloved PM has been unnecessarily dragged in it.. shame on tgem when at least 60 % of their tourists are from India alone.. the ban by Indians is hence justified
@@Reflect_on_me I believe it was an ill thought out comment that should not have been shared and will cost Maldives dearly due to the boycott. We have enjoyed the Maldives and would have loved to sail in India however, it is difficult for cruising yachts to get a permit to sail through your country.
I can say, we do not get bored with any of it! Appreicate all the videos!!
Thank you!
Great video guys, excellent editing Rachel. Nearly 22K Subscribers, well done 👍
Thank you.
They deserve a LOT more.
I wondered what you meant by ghost resort -- now I see. Thirteen years of neglect. A new owner would have to start from scratch -- but for the cement I i wouldn't trust any of the structures still standing, and barely so. Thanks for the tour of a lost dream,, yours, Rachel, as well as the developer. Best regards.
Ghost town - ghost resort - ghost net, places and things still around but no longer functioning with people. At school I remember being taught that any town will return to native forest in 100 years. This island has a way to go.
I really like watching to your edited videos. You created some of the best cruising videos I have seen. ♥
Thank you. I know the lives are rather different
You always have the grooviest, fun and most informative video on UA-cam.
You guys get to have some wonderful experiences! I wish I could experience some of things you get to experience. Never take it for granted.
We are so grateful and appreciate what we are experiencing together.
Thanks for sharing your million dollar view. Rachel, you do an amazing job with your video's.
Thank you Evan
Great following you guys, Would you do a live Q and A sometime?
Thanks Alisdair, we have been doing live lately where we answer questions on the hop.
Here's an example ua-cam.com/users/liveSw96ykWmGUg?si=HPdtkgDynLVpLwiR
In the end only NATURE is the lasting winner.
Nature is slowly creeping in, but the concrete ain’t giving up easily.
Great interesting place thank you for sharing. I would rather go camping. I travel alot of work and hate hotels.
well that was interesting,
Even if the final sale price was $1.00 they should have forced to find a new buyer that could finish the project and open it.
Hopefully the government of the Maldives is a bit wiser in their future building permit offerings.
Couldn't agree more. Three developers were being greedy asking for 50m and got nothing. A realistic sale price might have saved it.
I think I prefer YOUR home view over the high priced resort views 👍🏻 - just saying 😉. Happy Anniversary by the way 🙏
Yes I think we are the winner and we get to change our view whenever we want.
What a waste.
Nature takes back.
Love you guy! You're right, Rachel, the waste of resources at the ghost resort is heartbreaking. I wouldn't mind camping there as it is now. The area is so beautiful. 🥂🍾Happy Belated Anniversary!🥂🍾 Safe travels. ❤
What a fantastic place, to bad it did not make a go of it. Love the way you toured it I got to see it with this video, thank you for that. Had to share this also.
Thank you David. The abandoned resort was an amazing place to visit.
@@TheCruisingKiwis I really like when y'all do tours like this so we can see more of the places that you are at.
Nice work as usual Rachael.
Really in place to ducumeNt waste in tourism. MANY LOST PARADISES AROUND!
I remember an abandoned unfinished building by the seaside in Malta: PARADISE LOST in broad letters on the wal...l
This was very interest thanks Rachel and Robert. 50 year lease ? Som it's now bankrupt or just stop building altogether, but now if someone want to take over how's that work? I can't believe the original owner's wanted $50,000,000 dollars for the unfinished resort. USA dollars ? That was a lot of hermit crabs crawling around. And it was nice that the resort you are anchored in front of invited you for a fantastic evening to live like a RICH person. looking forward to next video new or old cheers
Yeah a realistic price might have kept the project alive.
I’m happy to see that they failed on this resort project . So we saved one of our Maldivians property 😄 I would say . We already loose our properties 😂 lease by government mobs 🫣for 90 years or so 🙄
Fair enough. In that sense, It's a shame so much material went into the place only to be left to rot.
Happy anniversary guys. 💥💥I would rather changing 360 views from a boat.
Thank you and we agree😊
So sad, what a beautiful location.
Places like these I wonder how employees live. Do they have accommodations on the island, or do the hotels boat them back and fourth. Interesting place.
When up and running, staff live on the island somewhere away from guests.
amazing video:)
I’m thinking “bird cage from jurassic Park” 😂 2:32
Haha yeah spot on!
Stay back from that island, looks like ghost island, so in this case dont bring yr children , may be is not safe.
Thank you for the advice.
i not fan of the live ,becomes to boring , todays video much better very interesting ,pity the abandon resort going to waste ,
Lives are finished for now, just the edited vlogs for the time being.
Great tour through a sadly abandoned resort... Good example on how nature is growing.
Glad you could celebrate well your aniversary, at the end; you both desrrved it!
And yes, your life is way better. Simple life, million dollars views (and Internet, thanks to Andre) and surrondings daily for just a bit of effort with the sails, night shifts, repairs... and editting adventures (and fails) that give us big pleasures and funny moments haha
I don't know if I feel sorry or glad about the noni plant... If there were fruits, it would have been q funny end repeating the noni challenge😂😂 Though I guess not even Mocha would dare to try it.
Safe journey, fair winds!
There is no way Mocha would go anywhere near noni. Clever girl😄
@@TheCruisingKiwis haha
Maldives going down .arrogance,racist.
Sri Lanka is a natural beauty.❤
Going down to where?
I'm sad we didn't stop and visit Sri Lanka. It sounds beautiful.
First time we have seen Declan kiting for a while, must be nice to get back into it.
Yeah finally a steady breeze for him to get out there
:)
What a waste of an island and all that infrastructure.
Certainly is.
When you guys mentioned you were going to the Seychelles, the first thing I though of was how Sam and Colby explored an abandoned hotel there. You guys are going there so you may as well.
I just took a look at the channel you mentioned. Maybe a job for Kiwi boys to take on.
@@TheCruisingKiwis That is that I was thinking, the exploring thing use to be really big. They built their whole channel exploring abandoned places that are basically stuck in time. I have always found that fascinating.
You just came into my feed-I gasped and subbed so quickly my heads spinning 😁😂. Indeed, I concur in your statement of ‘what a waste!’. I just turned 69, spent 40+ yrs in rest/hospitality industry, retired bartender 😁. Started hamburger joint as teenager, finished career in 5 star resorts. I got spoiled in food, international workers endeared me to my heart, so my thoughts run the gamut of all the workers in trades made zero to little money AND efforts/energy spent for nothing! 🥵. In between seasons I worked in construction; secretarial, gopher(😝) payroll, delivering to sites in emergency. These trades are the best people around in so many ways. I pray they’ve been able to move forward🙏🏻. It’s never good to see what could have been, being destroyed 🙏🏻❤️
Welcome aboard Linda! How did you find us? Gosh, you've had a colourful and interesting career. I hope you enjoy following our journey.
@@TheCruisingKiwis I’m in Thailand and the Philipines following all beach, boats, ships, anything with ocean! I live in Arizona, land of the giant crack in the ground😝The Grand Canyon! It truly is magnificent and I joke as much as possible! You came into my feed because looking at a Maldives journey and villa. I grew up in Texas, along the gulf coast, family had boats, then my dad bought a shrimping boat. So water and the ocean is sorely missed by me here in the ‘high desert’. We have green stuff too😁but it’s DRY, little rain-god I miss rain lol! And you’re an amenable fun family! Safe travels, may the wind be constant in your sails, may you touch hearts and be touched by more loving hearts! Blessings!!!🙏🏻❤️😃
If you are looking for a place to stay there are lots of expensive resorts but also plenty of cheaper guest houses. This one we saw was lovely. Very quiet and peaceful, a bit too so for some😊

@lindabuck2777 we would love to visit the big cut off we ever get to the US.
Does Rob not actually OWN shoes?
He has. Somewhere. Tune in next week when he makes a huge effort to conform.
Happy Anniversary to both of you.
Boycott Maldives
Why?
This is paid video.
Not at all. We are a family sailing around the world, documenting our adventures as we go.
How sad what a waste. I was worried you guys would step on nails with your barefeet! Next time for your anniversary stay at a resort that's completely finished. Happy Anniversary 🎊🥂🍾💕
You are right so much waste of quality building supplies that stretches over the entire island. No feet were harmed in the making of this video😂
Wow! Thanks guys..
Great video guys
Thank you. Camping. Always.
There’s nothing quite like sleeping out under canvas. Although boating life feels quite similar. Especially when it’s raining and everything is wet 😊
Thank you!
Good one guys.
👍
