MAYDAY AT REMOTE ISLAND - Scariest moment sailing the world on a catamaran - Near death Freediving

- THANKSGIVING TRAGEDY - Sailing family save son from freedive DROWNING at remote island
With all forms of diving there are inescapable risks, unfortunately, on this occasion the thrill of the challenge may have clouded our vision.
While sailing our liveaboard sailboat through the beautiful, tropical, south Thailand islands, we encounter a near fatal free diving accident. Our son Finn experienced a deep water blackout, or in layman's terms passed out underwater while surfacing from a 30m, 100ft free dive with no fins. Luckily is father had been keeping an eye on him, spotted him unconscious seven metres below the surface and, together with Finn's brothers, worked as a family to drag Finn back to safety, where they applied CPR until Finn regained consciousness. However, that was only the beginning of this freediving nightmare.
In search of clear blue water for free diving and some windy days for kite surfing we instead discovered perished kite bladders and the inside of a hospital room.
Freediving is a form of underwater diving that relies on breath holding until resurfacing rather than using breathing apparatus such as scuba diving.

BACK STORY
In 1997, after rowing at the Atlanta Olympics, Rob rowed a tiny 7m (22 foot) plywood boat 2,500 miles from Tenerife (Canary Islands) to Barbados (Caribbean). It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race.
Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of.
The plan? To sail around the world.
Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz

I watched your boys hyperventilating prior to free diving.
This does enable you to stay deeper for longer, but how / why?
Hyperventilating before free diving is known to increase the risk of blackout underwater.
The “mechanism” by which hyperventilating works to increase your bottom time - is because it artificially lowers your blood carbon dioxide levels well below the trigger point that gives you the urge to breath urgently because your oxygen levels are depleted.
You guys are apparently all qualified at SCUBA so one would assume you know all these dangers, you should have learned all this during your SCUBA courses.
When at depth free diving, you have a much smaller volume of air in your lungs because under Boyles law - of partial pressures, the air in your lungs compresses at depth underwater.
Every 32 feet is one Atmosphere of pressure.
So the volume of Oxygen available to your blood vessels from the alveoli in your lungs at those depths is less than half what it is at the surface.
Then you’ve also artificially lowered the carbon dioxide level in your blood below the trigger point for the urge to breath.
As a result you feel fine as if you have more than enough oxygen in your lungs to sustain you at a time when you actually have less than half the lung full you inhaled at the surface.
The result is that you black out very quickly, it’s basically instantaneous - there is no black collapsing tunnel effect on your vision.
This is why I say “play stupid games, win stupid prizes”.
All of you should have well & truly known these risks and managed them accordingly - but you didn’t.
Kids had no dive fins on to give them an advantage getting down and back up faster, for eg.
Rob, I’ve said this publicly to you before.
I list all respect for you as a father, who would take their family into a 3rd world nation that has zero value for human lives, having murdered the Balibo 5 journalists, shot by firing squad Barlow & Chambers as just a couple of recent examples, not to mention the Khmer Rouge murdered your own brother.
It’s my personal opinion, as a commercial qualified skipper, and rescue diver, that your unfit to master your vessel with your family aboard
You are far to Cavalier with assessment of risks - which is evident time & again.
I would definitely NOT put my own family willingly into the risks situations that you repeatedly do.
No parent should outlive their child, but if you continue on in this manner & it eventually causes you to lose a family members life, you will never forgive yourself.
Frankly mate, man to man, you need to pull your head in, and get a far better grip in risks assessment, as a father & a skipper, because in both cases that responsibility falls on you.
Were your children younger & unable to make adult choices for themselves, I would have no hesitation reporting you to child welfare services, for the sake of your kids.
It’s that bad.
All your doing IMHO is publicly showing the world your unfit to be a father, husband, yacht master or diver frankly.
It’s what you don’t know about being a mariner that’s the biggest risk to your family’s safety & well being.
Because I do know the risks - I’m more than happy to call you on it publicly.
Time to man up sport.
You’re bringing your nation into disrepute. 🙄👎
Get a life mate. You obviously have never gone outside if there is an element of risk. Please leave your amazing advice to yourself. Cheers 👍
You are right. We should have been more prepared and we are grateful it didn't end up worse.
You must be fun at parties.
Your comments are patronising, outrageous and completely uncalled for. You make your decisions for your family but leave your judgement of others out of it. There are always risks when sailing and diving (I have been doing both for 50 years), your comments are out of line and completely unnecessary!
your saying you wouldn't visit South East Asia because 2 drug dealers were executed and 5 journalists died after they placed themselves in an active war zone despite knowing the risks, both of which occured over 40 years ago? Ignorance at its finest, your a fool mate.
"Kudos to the Hamill family for openly sharing their unique journey with the world. It's truly a valuable teaching moment. While some may express concerns about living on a boat, it's essential to recognize that parenting, no matter the setting, involves managing risks. We've all had moments of distraction or oversight while caring for our children. What stands out to me is a loving family exploring the world together - a priceless gift shared with their kids. Criticisms aside, I appreciate their courage in sharing this moment. Given the opportunity, many of us would gladly trade places with them. Thank you, Hamill family, for your openness and for inspiring us with your extraordinary adventure."
Thank you Brent for this amazing message.

I hope this documentary finds its way around the world and helps to save someone's life. Declan....wow...Brother of the Year award for you! You are a true hero. It just goes to show, we are our Brother's keeper. Quick action and selflessness saved Finn's life!! Big shout out to Ivan as well. Very happy to see the out pouring of support from those providing rescue and care for Finn. Blessings to you all for continued recovery to 110%.
Thank you Todd. Feel free to share this far and wide with people you think could learn from our mistakes.

Wow, given the situation, you guys put every asset you had together and Saved Finn, even Rachale's GPS screaming gave you the perfect direction the boat was. And, you know even with more training and more equipment, things can still go wrong. The important thing is, he's alive, thanks to each and every one of you, what a family, what a story, this is a life changing moment! Hopefully, there won't be a next time, but if there is, I know you all have every knowledge to be had on this. Love and much respect to you all 💙💙💙💙❤
Thank you Amanda, Finn has had a rough month or so. Our plan is to take a free diving course so we all know the ins and outs of the sport better. William Truebridge, New Zealand's very own free diving world champion has just released a course which we are signed up to.

From now on ECM means Extraordinary Middle Child! So glad this didn’t end differently. What a team.
Yay for the EMC!
Very true Ken, very true however, this will have to be a secret between thee and me, we don't want to give Declan ideas above his station 🤩

It's an incredible feeling to know that all of the universe's powers were on board that day. The fact you saw that documentary together only weeks before, on saving diver's lives, to actually having to act it out to save your son/brothers life has given you an incredible reboot in your lives. (As if you weren't already living a dream.) It serves as a reminder that we are all only here for a visit and that we must make this life count. Our hearts go out to you, and we shed a tear listening to each of your recollections of that moment that truly rocked your family. Bless you for sharing and may you continue on with your journey safely.
Thank you for the lovely observations. A sequence of events though scary were, as you say (I like the context), a reboot. From the sounds of your name you know the life is an adventure deal.
I’m a big fan of the EMC (aka Declan) & an admire his quick thinking to save his brother. What an incredible bond the three (3) boys have…….huge respect…..Go Well 😊
Thank you very much. Go the EMC

everything is a 'bit of a fuss', except the one time it isnt
*also, 3 days (!!) & a pneumonia!* all things, im sure last time i reviewed this biz (tho mostly in paeds & not deep diving), those were all listed as myths (all bc of the obsession w restricting AB Rx)! 3 days. so long.
i guess: plus living on a boat, you wouldnt want to send people str8 back out. it is a pt specific difference. also also, having low HR/BP from actually being an athlete at that medal winning level could confuse a lot of things. im going to be thinking about this all night. _JC
@@JCResDoc94 I can only tell you what the doctor told us. I felt that Finn was well enough to go home after two nights, the doctor had suggest as much on day two but they kept us in that extra day. After the mistakes we had made getting Finn in there I wasn't going to argue.
cant wait for this interview, I think we ALL will learn alot. Of course, now we ALL know to do this interview long before we decide we want to free dive. Glad Finn is OK and the family has learned a valuable lesson that will forever be on their minds everywhere they go and every time they do any water sports. God Bless you all.

At 18.30 it says it all. Finn, who bloody near died talks about the worst bit being how bad it would be for the rest of you if things hadn't worked out. That's empathy and class right there. Great ep, guys.
Yeah that was a nice observation.

Wow. It's likely that Finn's recent illness played a big part in this. Also, if Finn was not in the physical shape that he is in, this may have ended differently. I'm glad you're still with us Finn. You're a good kid with a bright future. It may not have been the family visit that you imagined, but it will be a lifelong memory for sure. Thanks again for sharing your experiences with us. God bless!
Although this is an incident that would have been nice to live without the learnings from it are exceptional. It has certainly brought us further together as a family and cemented the boys love for each other.
@@TheCruisingKiwisGuess so. Events like this glue one to each other more than anything... As I said, be safe and don't take too many risks, or secure them more. Never change, Cruising Kiwis!!

If I’m mum . I’ll say no more free diving after all that . Thanks god that Declan went down and shut fin mouth and started cpr on the top of the water . 😊
Yeah Declan was amazing
That was the hardest episode of yours to watch! First off, I’m glad Finn is ok, and second, oh my, Declan, Ivan And Rob, what a job of responding to Finns aid. That was an intense one. Hope Finn is continuing to do well and is soon back to 100% for his rowing

Yeah he was rather under oxygenated for sure.

Holy crap…I felt like I was holding my breath for the whole video! So glad everyone ok. What a horribly scary experience for you all.
Thank you Anne
I was feeling the same way, and almost civering my eyes...😢🤯... Glad everything (Thanks to Declan and Ivan) ended well!! Yay for EMC and Ivan!!
Please, not only make sure you will review the safty protocols when going to the water and who is on watch, but also stop doing free diving. Or at least don't try to break the record and go too deep.
One advise is more than enough. You Hamills are so talented in many ways... don't waste it. Underwater filming is great, yes, but there must be other ways.
And if you really need to do it, (emc solving crisis with the anchor or the propeller), make sure it dosen't take too long and is under constant watch. Or with a rope.
The same with kite surfing! Do it, it must be a great feeling flying, but please sure the equipment and weather is ok.
Take care, Finn have fun for the rest of your holidays and have a safe journey and good winds.

Firstly, I am so glad that Finn is okay. Rob, it is easy after such events to sit, reflect and have that wonderful thing called hindsight to tell us what we could have done differently, what we have done wrong and beat ourselves up about it and it makes you think how our lives are fleeting however, us humans seem to find it difficult to reflect and say positive things about ourselves like a dad’s calm presence at the time when his son needed it; two amazing brother’s strength, courage and love for their brother shining through (well done Declan and Ivan) and not bowing down to fear and a wonderful motherly love (it was tears time over here!) who cared for and never left her son side when he needed support for when he needed to overcome the trauma what had happened. Finally, Finn who was brave enough to come onto film and thank his family and was so appreciative of them. Unfortunately, in life our families and loved ones will experience rubbish throws of the dice of life - Rob knows this more than any of us - you have raised adventurous boys but also you have raised brave, courageous, loving, resilient, supportive boys that truly reflect on the type of people you are, Rob and Rachel, and it’s how you teach the world about this and here you are doing this in front of around 20k of people. Thank you and remember in the face of danger you ALL did what you need to do calm, use your knowledge, worked together as a family and team and played to your strengths. ❤
Thank you for this amazing message

Ok now…, y’all made me cry with that intro. I love it.
Free diving is just a tragedy waiting to happen. It’s physiology. You can train all you want but when the body gives out it gives out. Don’t do it.

I participated in a rescue from a shallow water blackout involving a master scuba diver at swimming pool in a commercial dive shop. The guy was practicing breath holding. He was pulled from the water looking like a big Smurf he was so blue. The risks of blackout and drowning are really quite high. 30 meters or a 100 feet is unbelievable that these boys were making dive after dive. No safety diver in the water. OMG. No oxygen tank onboard. The father of course was shaken. I think it was terribly courageous to admit to the you tube universe in the goal of preventing someone else from drowning and humbling admitting his mistake. I’ve seen so much risk taking behavior. Particularly scary is all the cliff diving Zatara kids do. I once saw their son being pulled up a rope and doing flips but hit the water full face. He as spitting up blood at surface. Collapsed lung comes to mind. If you ride horses and motorcycles there is always the risk of head injuries and worse. I’m an old emergency room nurse and some of the stuff I see on you tube is terrifying. Good on this family for admitting their failure in assessing risk. What we don’t know can kill us. All of us, any of us. God keep this wonderful family safe.
Thank you for your comment, the constructive feedback, and other info. We do hope the mistakes we made here can be a lesson for others.

What a great job you all did Saving Finn. Especially Declan, who did an amazing job and I suspect prevented Finn’s lung injury from being a lot worse. It takes a very special person to remain that calm in a major emergency especially as it was his brother. Amazing!! You should all be very proud of how Declan, Ivan, Rob and yourself handled the situation. But Declan should be especially proud well done!! Especially as he is the EMC, perhaps not quite so Expendable!😀
Absolutely not expendable just our pet name for him. The boys did a terrific job and cemented their bond with each other further.

Wow what an episode
So lucky everyone was in the water to help Finn .
Such an emotional watch was very hard to actually watch a family episode like that.
Glad everything has worked out ok and you have all learnt alot re free diving and what can go wrong when you are pushing your bodies to extremes.
CPR and all first aid is so important to know and practice as all Electricians Rob do at re license time.
You are an incredible family thank you for sharing.
Stay safe please
Safe sailing
Cheers from the Tron team 😊😊😊😊
Thank you Rob, this incident certainly did highlight the gaps in our safety knowledge. The boys are just recreational free divers but that's exactly where the problems occur.

When you guys get to a place that has really good training i suggest the whole family going through it together. If you have to take a week or so off frpm filming do it. I actually saved a lady once that was choking to death that was handicapped in a wheel chair . All the training i had taken was on healthy people that you could get behind standing up to do the Heimlick (sp) on. No one prepared me to do it with a person in a wheelchair but thank God i was successful. She was almost a blue/ purple color when i saw her choking. God puts us in places sometimes to help others when we least expect it. So glad Finn is doing better. ❤
Get the training guys !!
Thank you TO! Wise words, we will be doing some training in the future for sure

Wow!! Thankfully Finn is alright. Also I never knew that even after you've recovered in a drowning blackout that you are actually still in danger. You all did your part to keep Finn with us. Great Declan watch that video on free diving that was a real blessing. Rachel that was quite the scream. I think it was good he was kept in hospital 3 days as better sure than sorry. Great video thanks for sharing and hopefully Finn this does not affect your rowing.
Looking forward to next video stay safe all
Thank you Jonathan. Rachel actually trained as a physiotherapist but it was her teenage years as a lifeguard that taught her about secondary drowning. I think it is a little known phenomenon after a near drowning event. I certainly hadn't heard about it.
Secondary drowning was the big takeaway for me and I guess for most folk. Good to remember to get a professional checkup after any potential drowning incident, no matter where it occurs! Thanks to all of you. Kia kaha!

Oh my God that was scary! But well done all of you getting him back up and breathing again. And well done Rachel, reading up on secondary drowning and anticipating more issues. It must have been such a relief when the help arrived with the oxygen. With all the foresight of 20/20 hindsight, you could say after his issues at the rowing event, a high stress activity like free diving was not a good idea. But, you couldn't know! Thank goodness they were diving together and Rob realised what was happening. I think the Expendable Middle Child just became the Essential Middle Child! You all did really well considering it's not something any of you had experienced before. A cautionary tale for others!
A cautionary tale indeed Owen. Obviously hindsight is a great thing. we really weren't thinking straight allowing Finn to dive so deep after his incident at the worlds. I think the problem was that it all started so innocently, they were just mucking about in 10 meters of water then progressively going deeper. The boys all did an amazing job in a high pressure situation.
@@TheCruisingKiwis yes, a situation that creaps up on you slowly can be so hard to avoid. You're right, everybody acted magnificently. I hope Finn has recovered ok.

I wept as I watched this. Thankful for your fast thinking/acting dad/sons team. And yes, I always knew the EMC had a significant purpose in life, and this may well have been it, genuinely a hero.
For a brief moment the EMC title was voided! 😁 But yes what an amazing response from Declan!

All the best Finn I pray that you make a full recovery in order to be able to do what you love .

Wow! Makes the hug from Finn a couple of weeks ago even more special after watching this. Tough episode to watch, so bloody glad things turned out the way they did. Take it easy in your recovery Finn, looking forward to seeing you out on water soon.
Thanks Belle, it was great to see you. I know Finn enjoyed seeing some of the old crew, yourself included.

So glad everything worked out and Fin is ok. The slightest difference in a person should always be explored further, I nearly lost my hubby with type two bends. Luckily I saw something off. I noticed Fin had dark purpling of his bottom lip in the footage, a sure fire sign of lack of oxygen. So lucky.
Sorry to hear about your husband, your vigilance paid off. Finns lips were discoloured after the incident. We are looking whether it is possible to carry oxygen on board.

I thought I had a bad week. It puts things into perspective. Just moved onto my new-to-me catamaran. Went to bed and woke to 2'+ of water in the port hull. Engine is full of sea water. Water is pumped out now, seacocks closed. Tomorrow the mechanic will be hear to see what needs to be done. Bilge pumps didn't turn on until we had pumped half the water out with a nearby boats pump. IDK what happened yet but time will tell. Hull is drying out. No more water intrusion. Seems petty in comparison but scary for me in the moment. Thankful that Finn is okay and hope he comes in second at the Olympics. I'm American so have to cheer for USA but hope Finn wins the gold. :)
Hope everything is okay with your boat and engine! It may not be a life threatening incident but I can imagine is no less stressful.
Thanks for your comment.

That was painful to watch for me seeing i recently had a heart attack.I was out for ten minutes I wish you well
Gosh wishing you the best in your recovery.
I'd be rethinking the idea of this free diving folly really. Healthcare looks bloody good there! Great to see first born in-disposable son made it OK 🙂
This incident has certainly given us pause to think and correct our mistakes so we don't make them again. We have been pleasantly surprised with the standard of healthcare in South East Asia. Finn was very well looked after in hospital.
So so glad Finn Okay👍🙏
Thank you for sharing your experiences
Praying none of you have to experience anything like that again
We sure hope not! In future we will have much better safety measures in place.
Thanks for your comment!

A fantastic video as always but a very special message to everyone on how fragile life is. I free dive and I'm always checking myself and others on my and their limits and will not let myself or anyone I dive with go unless I'm and they are 100% fit and well. You guys are exceptional athletes but this shows that even the best can fall. I'm so glad Finn was rescued, followed on, and recovered. This was a brilliantly done reenactment and public service announcement on secondary drowning. Keep up the good work. Kia kaha.
Thank you Monty, As athletes (and former athletes) we have an awareness of our bodies that possibly leads us to thinking we can push our limits in other physical pursuits. We had a close call here which has blessed us with the chance to reconsider our actions. As for secondary drowning, I think it is a little know consequence of a near drowning event. We would be extremely happy if this video helps save others.

Your quick reaction and subsequent decisions were spot on. Yes, we can all be better prepared- but even in your "unprepared" state you fair better than 98% of us would!

Thank-you for sharing the reality of your feelings about this situation. I have lost my older son. A car driver hit him while he was biking and killed him. I have learned to be thankful he had a clean death without suffering. I am thankful you have not had to bear this pain. I have found many times I have no words for what I have felt and gone through, only tears. This is ok. I appreciate that you shared how you were affected by this. We don't always get to choose the path we have to walk. I think about all the parents, families, who have lost their sons, family members, in war conflicts around the world.
Oh my goodness Jana, we are so sorry for your loss that's a terrible cross to bear. My heart breaks for you.
