@@GoodBadFlicks thanks but at the same time its a shame some of the movies are either hard to find or only available in torrents. Its either you dont watch them or dl them illegally.
Late Phases aka Night of the Wolf, was one those movies that i have been meaning to check it out, but never got to it. Yesterday i finally watched it and loved it. Damici as a blind old veteran Ambrose was fantastic. It was such a unique take to have an army wet, who fought one war, only to fight another in the retirement community.
Another film I saw browsing around for breezy, schlocky horror to watch to kill some time, and found a glorious gem of a beautifully-crafted and utterly unique piece of art.
I only have one complaint the werewolf's face looks more like a bat than that of a wolf. Good movie and i understand they might have been looking for a original design, but come on people you know what a wolf looks like.
I kept thinking, "That face looks familiar". Then it hit me: Dot Goddard from MADTV. The werewolves went from kinda silly to OMG, I can't look at this the same again.
think the werewolf definitely should of been better guys seriously even though it's practical effects they should of made the were wolf's face more wolf like 100%.
I seen the movie in a thumbnail and i thought "i have nothing to do so im gonna watch it" and It got me focused from start to end, very very good movie All characters are good can't reccomend it enough
I did as you instructed in the intro, I paused your review and watched the movie. You we're spot-on, this is a damn good movie and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
I posted on Facebook a couple of months ago asking for werewolf movie recommendations. One of my friends recommended this, and it was the BEST recommendation I got. Not to mention, probably the best movie I've seen this year. Good job on telling folks about it!
I saw you reviewed this and went ahead and watched it before watching your video. The score immediately drew me in, very haunting. I'm glad they showed the wolf early and you can tell they were still trying to not show all of it, but I would have liked it more if the attack inside the neighbor's house was shot with very low light so you saw only dark outlines of the creature and heard it growling, this would have been 10x better in my opinion. I found the wolf ears to be especially memorable, almost like a twisted Donnie Darko bunny look, this combined with the Predator-like strands of hair dangling from it's head made for a very ominous appearance. But I would agree with you that some shots of the wolf just didn't look that good. It almost seems like a mascot outfit when lit too brightly. Thank you for bringing this movie to my attention, I will always make time for a good werewolf movie.
Just watched the movie prior to watching your review and the only "bad" part of the movie was the werewolf effects. They were pretty horrible. But if you can look past that, this is a great movie. Solid acting, editing, pacing, score. It's all there.
Being a major werewolf geek from the seventies onward, any chance to see a unique werewolf film that doesn't just ape established films is a treat. Thanks for this.
just watched this after this review and boy was it really good! The acting was on point. I love the scene when the son walks out saying he’s going to go and live his own life and he sits there and and leans back into the darkness of the close
Btw, thanks for mentioning the director's previous film Here Comes the Devil at the beginning of the video, I just watched it and it was absolutely amazing.
Watched on a whim while browsing. Terrific f'n movie. Good cast. Good dialogue and interactions. Movie flows together very well. I loved Ambrose, really cool protagonist. This movie is a gem, A++
I just watched that movie because of this video. It was freaking amazing, such an under-appreciated movie. Like seriously I should have heard about this when it came out.
This film may be the Best Werewolf film Ive ever seen, granted there arent that many good ones. The Star Actor is quickly becoming a favorite of mine between this and Stakeland, he plays a badass like in the old days of Bronson, Eastwood and even Willis. I excited for what they do next.
It was a good movie overall, but I did have several complaints: #1. Between low volume, quick speaking, and a strong accent, Ambrose could be difficult to understand from time to time, and I was forced to go back with captions to get the full experience, #2. The werewolf faces could look rediculously goofy, like a monstrous Dot Goddard from MADTv, and #3. Ambrose is supposed to be a weapons expert, but it's clear that no such person was consulted for the movie. From the revolver holding one more bullet than that model should, to keeping his weapons unloaded leading up to a life-and-death encounter, he just didn't sell it.
Thanks for bringing this flick to my attention. My girl and I really enjoyed it. Your Exploring Series is excellent and I always look forward to seeing what's next.
Karen Lynn Gorney! I was lucky enough to cast her in a play I wrote that was in the NYFringe Festival in 2015. One of the nicest, most talented people I have ever, EVER met. She's amazing.
I live in Australia, we are going into summer and I'm in the country I can confirm how annoying and loud cicadas are, once they hit their peak I have to put a white noise machine on with headphones in to drown them out.
Hi Cecil, I'm so glad that you're taking a look at 'Late Phases'! It's a good movie that deserves attention. There's also a movie called 'Howl' I'd think you'd like. Plus, I just finished watching a coming of age movie call 'Partisan', which is slow but surprising tense. When you get to see them, let us know what you think!
Whit Halloween so close I have been watching a lot of your clips looking for older gems I missed. As soon as this one started I was like "oh yea. I remember this one." Definitely a good werewolf flick. While not as good as Dog Soldiers or the Howling it's still in my top 5, just in the back half.
Nick Damici is a phenomenal, hugely under rated actor with a keen eye for intelligent, slightly different horror films. They seemed to slip under the radar for a lot of people, but I do hope that he gets the chance to finish his Stake Land films off as a trilogy.
Great review as always and a good film despite the rather dodgy creatures. Would love to see your take on another werewolf movie that doesn't get much due, ' Dog Soldiers'.
That movie is INSANELY underrated. It's one of the few modern movies I've seen with 90% or more practical effects. Nowadays they make monsters mostly or entirely CGI and it makes them less believable. I prefer a bad or average practical effect over the best CGI effect and bad practical effects look way better than bad CGI. So many modern horror movies look more like PS1 games than real life.
Just watched this today fantastic movie 😊 also I watch another one called, I am Lisa, a 2020 horror movie, think revenge movie with a werewolf. I thought it was pretty good and definitely worth a watch for werewolf fans. It's called, I am wolf, in the UK for anyone looking to get it on dvd.
I actually just got done watching this film now Cecil I really loved it I couldn't stop watching the old school creature was spot on along with Nick Damici's performance as Ambrose McKinley at times he does remind me of Charles Bronson it was also great to see Tom Noonan&Lance Guest in there along with Ethan Embry as well plus the score was baddass as well it's so sad we don't munch werewolf movies as munch as Vampire flicks but every once in a long while we get one as good as this but ''Dog Soldiers'' is still my #1 IMHO!
This is such a strange and interesting film. It’s so weird. The plot, the characters in the film are not the ordinary stock characters you usually see. Really cool.
I discovered the flick around this time last year. Glad to see it get your "exploring" treatment. The werewolf design certainly is different, not exactly my cup of tea, I even prefer the brown bear look in Silver Bullet to this, but it still works wonderfully.
Defo one of the best werewolf films. American Werewolf, Dogsoldiers, Silver Bullet, The Wolfman (both) and The Asylum's Beast of Bray Road (I like it haha) are the only films that actually deliver on what I love about werewolves - either the who dunnit or tragedy angle . The acting in this was spot on, especially the lead, and the heart put into it was obvious. I was also amazed that the bloke that played Mike Brody was in it! I recognised him but had to IMDB him to see where from. I couldn't believe it. Great actor.
the only thing i think couldv been done better was the deduction of who the werewolf was. i just ends up being, suspect whoever has a caugh. it was also bit silly when nobody calls the police at hearing the shreiking or screaming or the gunshot when ambros puts down his dog but its something that can slide. everything else was fucking awsome.
Massive thank you on this one. Great recommendation. I wish the werewolves looked a little bit better, but otherwise an excellent flick. So few good Werewolf films but this is definitely one of them.

I'd be interested in your take on the stream services that focus on horror movies. I looked up Incident On And Off A Mountain Road because of the mention in the review. It's available through Screambox, which I've never heard of. I feel as there are quite a few horror genera streaming services, but I'm reluctant to sign up. The impression I get is that they have a pretty small catalog that grows very slowly. Doesn't seem like a good fit for a subscription service. However the various services seem, collectively, to have many titles that aren't otherwise available. Your reviews are great and I am very interested in your take on ways to get to see some of these movies.
I saw this movie last week in preparation for this video, and I was really impressed with the movie. Werewolves often get overlooked and I hate that so it was good to see a new one that wasn't Underworld. Also check out Honeymoon. I would love to see your take on it.

I'm 6 months late and haven't seen the film (yet), but I completely agree. The first time I saw the werewolf design in this review, I was like "what!?" I think it's mainly in the head/face for me, although some of the general design seems off, too. It's a shame, because practical effects are awesome, and it looks like a really good movie

I came across this late night on the Horror channel in the UK. It's one of the best werewolf films I've seen. It's very Stephen King like.
Deloris's death, the silhouette walking past the window, chills man, chills, horror done right
Who would win in a blind bad-ass stand off, Nick Damici in this movie or Stephen Lang in Don't Breathe?
I think it would be Nick because ya know he's taking on werewolves instead of teens
Lang hands down.
Rutger hauer from blind fury
Eli from "Book of Eli".

Thanks! When I get it I'll be sure to do a video. According to YT it takes like 8-12 weeks so it looks like it won't be for a while.
Just watched it and loved it.
