Out of all the things that could happen to you during a troubled production, accidentally making the president of the country you are filming in think he's about to have an invasion/coup d'etat at the hands of your extras must be up there as one of the craziest.
I just want to say its 3 AM here, my eyes are sore from editing for hours but seeing comments like these really help to keep me going. I appreciate it all so much. :)
I was at a small screening here locally with someone from the production and he recalled filming a scene in one of the villages. Throughout the filming there were a group of elderly men joking and whatnot, after wrap he talked to them a bit and they were laughing because when they were little cannibalism was practiced there somewhat regularly and they got a kick out the irony of pretend cannibalism happening where actual cannibalism had since become taboo.
This movie kicked ass. Its the movie that "Hell of the Living Dead" wished it could be, with its incredible locations. It could easily fit into Romero or Fulci's series. In the deleted scenes there is even a couple of nods to "Zombi 2" with the doctor talking about the plague and one of the officers saying a man "saw his wife walking in the village at night".
Best thing in this film is how they show the zombies still following the humans long after they escape and you see them wayyyyyy in the distance walking in that direction, which would be real..... that's the point of slow zombies = too many and they just jeep following and attacking
This make me really appreciate The Dead. I saw it when it first came out and now that I know what went into making it, I really look at it with a new set of eyes. This was also very inspiring. You know, not giving up.
it was stunning what these guys accomplished under adverse conditions and you detailed it in expert fashion. the Dead is one of the best zombie movies ever made , it has an authenticity and visceral feel that could only have been created under the horrendous conditions they filmed under
GoodBadFlics - thank you. You do an awesome job, investigating the work behind movie making, and have altered my opinion of quite a few low-budget films. Can't wait for your next episodes.
Another fantastic video pick by Cecil! All I originally saw of this movie way back was the trailer in front of a movie I bought, but it so impressed me I kept waiting for the home video release & bought it immediately when it was on Blu-Ray, and I wasn't disappointed! It's the one zombie film I always mention first to anyone who says they're looking for a GOOD one. Haven't had time to watch the sequel yet, nor have I heard anything about its quality. The preview looked promising. Never knew about that book, either, I've gotta read that!
You should check out the second movie. It's a different story, so not a continuation of the first, but, they keep the quality and the background scenery and action are wonderful.
+Nolan Vince I've planned to many a time but never found enough time to. When I heard it took place in India my mind spun, imagining a zombie event there & how inescapable it would be.
agreed, he has been doing an incredible job for years, the reviews are unbelievably well documented, noy only that but you can always feel his passion for cinema
DUDE, this is my favorite video youve done. That had to be the most ridiculous story of a movie production i've ever heard of. It beats waterworld even though i didnt think it possible.
This is proof that determination love and passion can get you anywhere truly amazing how much they endured during this movie included climbing a mountain without a harness after recovering from malaria!
I absolutely love this series. It's always amazing to hear the struggles people will go through to produce quality films when they could've easily just shot everything in a studio and the extra mile is always appreciated.
I don't care much for zombie or slasher films but your exploration and presentation of this seeming gem really sparked my admiration. Another great job! I'm going to start asking for films to for you to explore.
The Dead is an absolutely beautiful film. The plot isn't exactly anything original, and often feels like an amateur effort. However, the skill of all involved is always apparent. Thank you for covering this one. More people should see this movie. You've helped with that. Thank you.
The dead is definitely one of the best zombie movies ever made. For me this movie was the ultimate tribute to George A Romero and Dawn of the dead and a reminder that you don't always need big budget to create great movies!
I actually own this one. I liked it a lot but may have loved it if they hadn't had so many problems and were able to make the movie they wanted to make. The info here ads a little flavor I otherwise didn't know was there.
this movie is one of my favorite Zombie Movies, along with Zombieland, I am Legend, and the original Night of the Living Dead. it's so distinct and tonally different than other zombie movies, it's stuck in my brain. it doesn't dip into melodrama and it simply shows how survival is difficult.
I saw this on Netflix, I was taken back by the cinematography myself very well done but at the same time I thought it was kind of slow paced . Looking back I see it as a good thing and I put it in the same category as a movie like The Road .
Recently found your channel and I love it! I've seen probably 90% of what you post and it's so awesome learning details about the productions. Now I have neat little facts to give people as I subject them to these movies. The Dead was a random rental a few years ago and I bought it the next day, nice to learn some cool info about the production and what they went through.
I wasn't crazy about this movie (in fact, I pretty much forgot about it until now) but one thing I really liked was the ending. A lot of zombie films end with the protagonists finding some type of sanctuary or safe haven, but in this one the protagonist realizes the entire world is stricken by the zombie infection and there is literally nowhere to go.
I really enjoyed "The Dead" when it came out. I had no idea the filmmakers, cast and crew went through such a rough time while filming though. I think I am going to pick up that book now that I know its available. Great episode, Cecil.
Back when I first saw it I immediately wondered how that shoot went. But I never expected such hardship. considering the final product is one of the best zombie films ever made. One of the more truly striking aspects was how creepy the zombies were. I couldn't remember the last time zombies were creepy. What an amazing feat in spite of all that. Immense respect. The sequel was bit of a retread for me but it's a fine zombie movie too.
One of the most inspirational movies I've seen, right up there with The Evil Dead. Really wants me to go make a movie and makes you appreciate the effort that goes into a movie.
I loved The Dead. it was one of those films I'd heard about when it was shooting, heard about when it was showing in festivals and then... nothing. For the longest time, it was this unfindable film. Granted, that put my expectations a bit on the high side, so I was somewhat disappointed with the first viewing, but then I watched it a dew more times and now it's in my top 5 zombie films of all time. The Dead 2 was also pretty good, but the whole father daughter thing dragged it down a bit. The thing that made it stand out was it was a return to the slow walkers when everything else (28 Days Later...*, Snyder's Dawn of the Dead, Resident Evil) was these fast crackheads, and it showed us how creepy the slow walker could still be. *how much you wanna bet someone says something about 28 Days Later...?
Watched this movie at my cousins place a few years back and enjoyed it I liked the Plane crash at the beginning and the main character with his determination to survive.
I was quite surprised by it, I really liked it and it had gone under my radar, I stumbled upon it. I had no idea there was this much drama involved. I love the bit with the president... my parents lived in Botswana for 6 years and I visited them. They drove me past the president of Botswana's house and it was small and low key, not much bigger than my house. They said we could go knock on the door if we wished to and likely have tea with him. Yea, Africa is different. The second one was good as well, I like that they are placed in different areas than rural or big city USA. There are a few good zombie books out there too in for instance Afghanistan like Zombiestan and Escaping the Dead as well as Alice in Deadland taking place in Africa as I recall.
Seen this film twice and I dig it a whole hell of a lot. Actual suspense and atmosphere in a modern zombie movie. Pretty rare considering what's being put out recently.
Well, since they did not survey the place where they will shoot, expect a lot of problems that follow. Plus, the main title almost became applicable to them.Good thing they finished the movie and live to tell about the problems they encountered.
You really know your shit GBF :) I love filmmakers like these guys. Every single thing going wrong and still they keep on and finish the project. Anyone else think of Chris Redfield in Resi 5 at 1:24 ?
I already liked the film as it was. But after hearing this, my appreciation for it increased x 5. The production must have been absolutely nuts. Two things learned: 1) a good zombie director is just as difficult to put down as his/her pet, favorite monster. 2) dont shoot a movie in Burkina Faso unless you know local talent.
Do you think you will ever do an exploring video on “Zombie” from 1979? It’s one of may favorite horror movies, and was one of the few movies that after I finished watching it, I had to sleep with the lights on.
I remember first seeing it on the SyFy channel a year or two back, and thinking "For a SyFy channel movie, this is not that bad. Hell, dare I say its good." Then a promo for Sharknado 3 came on, and the notion that SyFy can make a GOOD movie went out the window.
Jesus. I owe an apology to the directors. I didn't like the movie cuz I thought it was boring but after hearing about all the shit they went through I gotta give em props for dedication.
Just came here from your Monsters review. Two excellent films, where the directors made the best of their circumstances. Both films are going on my "To-Watch" list.
Incredible story. Damn. Thought the movie was pretty good but I never watched it a second time. With this new information in mind I have to watch it again.
Wow, I remember seeing this at a store. I couldn't buy it cuz I didn't have enough money on me.... dang, I should have gone home grabbed some cash and gotten it the same day. So many copies and they were gone in like a week!
Yeah because we know the same people shaking down these white film makers werent the same ones murdering and raping and dismembering these same villagers. Calm down you over emotional sjw.
Good analysis as always, you should include informations such as the grossing and the budget of the movie to see how well it did at the box office/if it was rentable.
My bad, I tried to find some other information there wasn't that much on it. As far as you always find something good to say even for pretty bad movies you already explored did you considered to take a try on Troll 2? It's seen by a lot as "the best worst movie" there is a pretty good documentary on it I suggest to check it out if ever you are wondering what to do next ^^ Thx anyway!
This would make a great documentary, just like Best Worst Movie (2009) a great documentary about the bad movie Troll 2 If they made a documentary about this production nightmare they sure would get their money back
This movie has a lot of love put into it, you can tell cause seriously, the fucking SAHARA desert? You HAVE to love a movies production to go through that. I will certainly give it a watch sometime
I saw this, I thought it was a very different and interesting approach. And although I guess you could tell it was a strained production? not too bad a movie at all!
Out of all the things that could happen to you during a troubled production, accidentally making the president of the country you are filming in think he's about to have an invasion/coup d'etat at the hands of your extras must be up there as one of the craziest.
This dude is the most underrated movie critic on UA-cam
:)
+GoodBadFlicks Just stating the facts
He's my favorite. :D
I agree.
I just want to say its 3 AM here, my eyes are sore from editing for hours but seeing comments like these really help to keep me going. I appreciate it all so much. :)
It gives you even more appreciation for the movie when you know how it was filmed, it was a great throwback movie.
Hahaha that's awesome.
Holy shit the making of this movie would make a great movie. Those poor bastards.
Scott Destan "Shadow of the Zombie" :-D
An African guy called Prince?... I may have sent him money by email
He was probably a literal tribal prince.
he said he had a very interesting business proposal so i sended him money! till those days i'm waiting for my dividends i will be a rich man !!!
Hats off for their persistence in making it. It's like the Apocalypse Now of zombie films.
I want to see a movie about the making of this movie
make it happen
Well the book exists...
Like the room ?
Redem10 me too! (it'd probably be better then the actual movie)
This movie kicked ass. Its the movie that "Hell of the Living Dead" wished it could be, with its incredible locations. It could easily fit into Romero or Fulci's series. Thanks as always Cecil for giving us the unheard of stories behind films.
it was stunning what these guys accomplished under adverse conditions and you detailed it in expert fashion.
the Dead is one of the best zombie movies ever made , it has an authenticity and visceral feel that could only have been created under the horrendous conditions they filmed under
GoodBadFlics - thank you. You do an awesome job, investigating the work behind movie making, and have altered my opinion of quite a few low-budget films. Can't wait for your next episodes.
I was whispering "Please tell me it succeeded" over and over. After all that these guys went through, it had to succeed.
Another fantastic video pick by Cecil! All I originally saw of this movie way back was the trailer in front of a movie I bought, but it so impressed me I kept waiting for the home video release & bought it immediately when it was on Blu-Ray, and I wasn't disappointed!

this guy deserves much more subscribers.
+A Dark Future :)
so true! Brilliant Content
+A Dark Future Been saying it for a long time now, but he's making the climb.
agreed, he has been doing an incredible job for years, the reviews are unbelievably well documented, noy only that but you can always feel his passion for cinema
+A Dark Future Hands down one of the best content creators on YT.
DUDE, this is my favorite video youve done. That had to be the most ridiculous story of a movie production i've ever heard of. It beats waterworld even though i didnt think it possible.

The fact there's a sequel shows how much love went into this film. I'm going to have to get both
On top of absolutely brilliant reviews and film explorations, you also come through with one of the best comment sections as well. Hell yes.
I actually own this one. I liked it a lot but may have loved it if they hadn't had so many problems and were able to make the movie they wanted to make. The info here ads a little flavor I otherwise didn't know was there.

goodbadflicks is the only channel i watch to understand behind the story of the movies, THANKS GBF keep it up your hardwork
I saw this on Netflix, I was taken back by the cinematography myself very well done but at the same time I thought it was kind of slow paced . Looking back I see it as a good thing and I put it in the same category as a movie like The Road .
I laughed out loud when he said the extras fell asleep on the ground.lol

Thank you!
Wow. I don't really go for zombie movies, but I might watch this one out of sheer respect for what they had to deal with while making it.
BEEELEEE it's worth watching. The story had heart
Still easily one of the best series' to ever be on youtube , you deserve alot more subs for the time and effort you put in :D
They went through a lot of pain, but it was worth it in the end. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
I fucking love this channel
I really enjoyed "The Dead" when it came out. I had no idea the filmmakers, cast and crew went through such a rough time while filming though. I think I am going to pick up that book now that I know its available. Great episode, Cecil.

A must watch for any aspiring film makers and directors. There is a lot that they could learn from your synopsis of the film making process.
This has made me feel SO much better about what I put my crew through.
Watched this movie at my cousins place a few years back and enjoyed it I liked the Plane crash at the beginning and the main character with his determination to survive.
Just watched this while drinking a cup of lemon tea. It made my week.
I was quite surprised by it, I really liked it and it had gone under my radar, I stumbled upon it. I had no idea there was this much drama involved. Definately one of the best of the 00s wave of zombie movies. Very interesting stories behind it too.
Thank you for bringing attention to this film, it deserves it.
I always enjoy watching your videos!! Keep up the good work, man!
I totally clicked on this thinking it might be about John Huston's film the Dead.
This might be one of the most gruesome making-of's I have seen in a long while...
They went through hell to get this made, these guys deserve tons of credit.
I sent your video the Howard (one of the directors). He seemed to like it. I briefly worked with him once. He's a very nice guy.
As always Amazing Stuff GBF! I have this movie since it came out and never got around to it. All your work motives to watch flicks!
I'll be honest when I first saw this movie I didn't think it was that good but now I'm more appreciative of it by what you're telling us
I already liked the film as it was. But after hearing this, my appreciation for it increased x 5. The production must have been absolutely nuts.

wow what an interesting story behind the production, ive never heard of this movie before but now i really want to watch it!
This is prob why most films stick to the usual filming locations.
They need to make a movie about the making of this movie!
I think these guys shouldve done WWZ.
Wouldve been much better than the crap we got..
Agreed. You're more correct than I can say, becuase the WWZ movie was a soulless piece of crap.
Just came here from your Monsters review. Two excellent films, where the directors made the best of their circumstances. Both films are going on my "To-Watch" list.
You ever see 'Undead' by the Spierig brothers? It's pretty amazing what they did with so little.
+Keith Fulkerson Yes! Love that one. The brothers did pretty much everything themselves. I've been meaning to do a video on that for a while.
+GoodBadFlicks Its such a shame those guys have done so few movies, I've loved everything by them.
Is it weird that I like looking into the details of movie production rather than the movie itself?
Incredible story. Damn. Thought the movie was pretty good but I never watched it a second time. With this new information in mind I have to watch it again.
I loved Both films, yeah the first had pacing issues. but man the look and feel of the movie was so good. and I loved the sense of dread the film had.
i loved this movie!!! thanks for making a video about it
could you make more zombie movies ???
it was cool to see a zombie flick set in Africa
caught part of this on tv once and wanted to see the rest.
Wow, I remember seeing this at a store. I couldn't buy it cuz I didn't have enough money on me....
dang, I should have gone home grabbed some cash and gotten it the same day. So many copies and they were gone in like a week!
Wow, i never knew they went through so much to make this movie and it still turned out great!
I loved this movie from the first time I saw it. I had no idea what went on behind the scenes. 😨
Dooude! The gift and turbo, two great films I watched because of your recommendations , would you consider recommending series or box set of the week?
So never film in Africa then.
+John von Shepard Fuck off.
pttoau Weldezion You can't just F off the truth bro you just can't.
91MoonKnight no, film there but have a lot of extra money and real guns.
Yeah because we know the same people shaking down these white film makers werent the same ones murdering and raping and dismembering these same villagers. Calm down you over emotional sjw.
That's like saying "Never film in Europe" just because a movie crew had a shit time in Serbia, once.
I always thought "The Road To Wellville" was a good bad flick.
+TexZenMaster I agree. The Road to Wellville is awesome.
Have seen both films. Have a new respect for them after watching this.
I love you Cecil. Your videos are the best and this one is my new favorite
+Justin D Thank you!
This is a great movie. Iv watched it once.
Wanting to watch it again hope one of the roku channels will put it back on.
Do The Dead 2 next
Good analysis as always, you should include informations such as the grossing and the budget of the movie to see how well it did at the box office/if it was rentable.
+deamon548 Thank you. None of that information was available. The total budget was never disclosed and it wasn't released theatrically.
My bad, I tried to find some other information there wasn't that much on it.
As far as you always find something good to say even for pretty bad movies you already explored did you considered to take a try on Troll 2? It's seen by a lot as "the best worst movie" there is a pretty good documentary on it I suggest to check it out if ever you are wondering what to do next ^^
Thx anyway!
Wow, its like if Resident Evil 5 wasn't full of dumb mutant monsters and had a slow burn plot.
... like Resident Evil 1.
I don't know, that burn you gave RE5 didn't seem slow to me.
Excellent review mister!
Keep it coming!
Started prt 2.
Cool. Thanks. Heading back.
I definitely need to check this film out now!
The Dead is a great movie, and the location really makes it stand out, it was a pity that the movie adaption of world war z wasn't more like this.
Loved this Exploring episode! And I liked the movie, too.
Oh, hell, I didn't know there was a sequel. I must now see it.
Great movie. And with the nightmare they had to endure to finish it? Respect.
This would make a great documentary, just like Best Worst Movie (2009) a great documentary about the bad movie Troll 2
If they made a documentary about this production nightmare they sure would get their money back
Do you know what Rob Freeman did after The Dead? Seems he havn´t been in any more movies.
I seen this once on TV and that was it I've been trying to find it ever since
I'll have to check this one out. I'm more for old school zombie flicks.
