"30 Days Of Night" is one of my favorite vampire movies of all time. Especially in how the vampires were portrayed. They were so much more creepy and scary than any vampire I've seen before or since.
Danny Huston was awesome in this film. One of the best on-screen vampires ever. The way he looked, the attitude he gave off and the authority he had... great performance.
One of the best vampires movies ever made. The scene when the vampires were using the girl for bait while crawling on the roof tops in the cover of darkness as she screamed for help was truly horrifying...Hiding out in the attic, Josh and company could only watch on helplessly.
That end clip from the -no god scene - by the lead vampire is chilling and just classic. You feel her desperation& hope and his total destruction of her hope
I remember my wife and I received some Gold-Class cinema tickets as an anniversary gift and we turned up there without checking what was on. When I saw this movie listed in the foyer I (half-jokingly) suggested we watch it. To my surprise - she agreed! We don't get to the movies often, so watching this on a huge screen, sitting in recliners while we were served beer and snacks, with my wife next to me, was the best movie experience of my life. I guess I really got lucky when I married her!
I love this wholesome comment. I bet you get all warm and fuzzy when you think about this memory, and sinking into a recliner next to her. I hope you still do stuff like this together.
Nice to hear about directors who get the chance to make the movie they set out to do for once. Love the movie btw. The setting is claustrophobic, and the vampires act like pure hellbeasts and are extremely dangerous, just like vampires should be.
Interview With A Vampire received a lion's share of the blame for wussifying the blood suckers as I remember with Anne Rice's take on the undead. As Norm McDonald said about the flick in a one sentence review, "Not gay enough." Also BUFFY:THE VAMPIRE SLAYER and its spin-off, ANGEL, got a fair share of kicks in the teeth as well from the "real horror fans" to boot. I actually prefer the graphic novel over the movie. On top of the of the stuff you mentioned that cut out. My favorite scene from the book, where Stella first spots the vampires through her binoculars, and they're looking right back at her with their toothy grins. Revealing them for the first time to the reader. Sent a chill through my spine. I was just irked me to no end not to see it brought to life on the big screen. Also IDW ,and Steve Niles are doing a relaunch of 30 DAYS OF NIGHT this month in a six issue limited series in case anyone is interested.
Yeah I really love the setting of this movie. Just that it being dark outside for 30 days so there's no escape and the Heavy snowy weather really makes this a awesome setting. Really cool concept.
If you're watching on DVD if you turn the subtitles on, they tell you what the vampires are saying, I'm not sure about the blu-ray as I only have the DVD lol
Marlowe was an incredible part PS. It's good to hear that there's no director's cut because it was released as intended. Another of your recommendations I've got!
I actually thought the film told a better and more fleshed out story than the comic did. The comic, though beautiful with its art was a rushed story that could have used a couple more issues for development.
It's a good horror flick, no doubt, and it's on my favorite vampire movies list: Salem's Lot (original) Fright Night (original) Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) 30 Days of Night Dracula (1931) Shadow of the Vampire
If you haven't already, check out Near Dark from 1987. That one's on my list for sure. And Let the Right One In. The original, not the lame US remake. So really, my list is the same as yours, plus those two. Lol! Also, honorable mention has to go to George Romero's Martin.
This was an exceptional film. Being a Josh Hartnett fan from "Black Hawk Down" and "Penny Dreadful" this is one of my favourite films alongside "Near Dark". Thank you for a wonderful review.
This is easily one of the best vampire movies ever. Vampires in this movie were terrifying. Great score. Great acting. Beautiful sets and color grading. They need to release it in 4K.
Talia Price to be fair, vampires aren't scary. I mean when cold water can kill them it just ruins any fear. hell they can't even come into your house unless you invite them.
I just love this movie. Was lucky to catch it on the big screen and left the cinema in total shock. The whole passage where they hide out in the attic was so intense. Also one of my favorite entries to the genre in the last two decades.
Another great video my friend! Thank you for your in depth analysis as usual. I've never fully seen 30 days of Night but I'm definitely gonna give it a full watch through sometime soon. I actually live in Alaska and it's sad that they didn't film anything up here, and to be honest I bet the film would've done much better if it had some more realistic Alaska scenery. Similar to how they did Frozen Ground with Cage and Cusack. Everybody that I know was talking about the movie and watching it to see places in Alaska. We rarely get Hollywood up here so it's a huge deal for us. Another example would be The Revenant by Alejandro González Iñárritu. I was blown away with how intense their filming process was. So if they could do it I'm sure the cast of 30 days of Night could've handled a little cold weather for a few weeks. We have a huge population up here and many of us work outdoors in the winter. They could've filmed up here. Anyhow, Thanks again for the great content as usual and keep up the good work! I'll try to give more feed back when I can. Cheers!
I really liked this movie in the theater but I remember saying to my wife at the time, 'this movie should have been made in the 80's. if it had, we would love it like a classic,' but showing up in the 2000's it was just way too late for it's own good. It was a film from a different time.
I wish we got more monstrous vampires like this. I hate the vampires that fall in love with humans thing. It's supposed to be essentially a demon in a corpse that feeds off the life force of others and if they use seduction, it's supposed to be a trap, like the light of an angler fish. It's so much better and makes them genuinely frightening.
I'm a new writer that loves fantasy. My book features werewolves and vampires, but they're nothing like twilight. The vampires aren't as scary as the ones in this movie but they're still pretty vicious. When they take down their prey, their fangs grow so long that they're cheeks actually tear when their jaws extend.
Just found your channel. I love the details and backstory to this. I had no idea the director fought a lot to get his vision of the movie out. Really appreciate the little details people forget about. This is still one of my favorite vampire movies. PS: killer clip at the end. One of my all time favorite scenes in a horror movie. Very intimidating, genuine and scary at the same time.
These are my favourite type of 'exploring' videos (where you give us a lot of info about behind the scenes stuff). Whilst your other type (Go through the plot of the movie and make witty remarks) are entertaining, I can't help but feel like I've seen that shtick from other content creators countless times before. Interestingly, I watched this movie in theaters during release in Anchorage, Alaska. While I enjoyed the movie, anytime they tried to use establishing shots or show the surroundings of Barrow there was uproarious laughter in the theater from the local crowd. Also, having the pipeline run through Barrow was pretty funny as well.
Not to nitpick, but isn't that Danny Huston, not Doug Huston, playing the vampire leader Marlow? Son of the late, great John Huston, btw. Great review, as always, though. An underrated movie, for sure.
I have this on DVD and I rarely watch it because honestly it scares me, lol! Danny Houston is a beast in this movie to the point where everything else I see him in I am leery of him. He made a perfect vampire. Terrifying.....
Kudos to them for using mostly practical effects! So many movies rely so heavily on CG these days. It's always refreshing to see someone realize practical effects can be just as good.
Definitely the most underrated vampire film of it's time. The movie inspired me to read the comics and dig deeper into the mythology. I was disappointed that they left certain elements out but overall very satisfied with how it turned out. The visual style is what I loved the most especially the color style of the film. I found the film vampires to look creepier than the comic vampires which is a first. Great film especially if you feel jaded by the current state of vampire stories in hollywood these days.
thank you I've been recommending people this movie for years and it felt like it was forgotten too quickly, it is a unique story, good job Cecil for spotting this one
another thing about the movie is when Spike's hit series Deadliest Warrior aired their 3rd season finale it Zombies vs Vampires and the Vampires they went with was the 30 Days of Night Vampire with Steve showing up representing the Vampire
I went opening night with my sister and my step dad to see this and at the end was a standing ovation for the film. Pretty good film for the vampire genre. Daybreakers was another film with a unique take on vampires and did it pretty well same with Let the Right One In (2008) ,Thirst(2009), and Stakland (2011), but lately not that much. I know with Universal's Monster Cinematic Universe and how since the are saying that Dracula:Untold will not be part of it that they can maybe do something unique. Hopefully.
This is one of my favorite vampire movies, and one of my favorite horror movies period. Criminally underrated. I can't believe most of the snow was fake it looked so freaking cold!
That was an interesting way to illustrate the vampire sub genre. Ancient vampires are much more interesting with their own language and cat like features and super vicious. I saw some behind the scenes where Danny Huston practising the tribal sounds, it was funny.
This is one of those movies I watch every couple of months because it makes me feel like a part of their town. I like small town movies like this, Adventureland, Beautiful Girls, Tremors, Red Rock West, etc.
It's always great when you hear about projects being made as the creative team intended; there have been a few cases where executives actually saved a movie but, more often than not, the creative team's vision should be left untouched.
This was a video I hoped for a while that you would make and it happened! I love this movie and I think it's very underrated and definitely one of the few vampire films that was done right. Keep up the awesome work GoodBadflicks, I always look forward to your videos every week!
This is why I watch these videos. I didn't particularly like this movie when it first came out, (I saw it at the theatre), but now I JUST GOTTA go and rewatch it.
Thanks for totally leaving my involvement of the project out. I only helped get it optioned, did the 2nd and 3rd parts of the book for free, and actually exist as an artist. ( Who's idea it was to have a little girl vampire in the first place. )
Hey Ben, it wasn't personal. At the time when I was doing this I was under a deadline and unfortunately, sometimes things would get missed or would have to be cut for time. (these videos used to be distributed by another site first before making their way onto youtube) I'm only one guy putting these together and sometimes I make mistakes. I don't remember exactly why, being that this was months ago, so I'm not sure why I didn't at least mention you while I was putting this together. I do very much like your work, its one of the few comic series I still picked up after I stopped collecting comics.
Good video as per usual. I would have appreciated a mention of Ben Templesmith's artwork in the book though. He had just as important a hand in creating the world of 30Days and the ferocious look of those vampires.
I really enjoy your reviews of each movie. You definitely do a lot of research and present it in a very likable way. I share many opinions with you so maybe thats why i like them. In any case keep up the great videos.
When I first watched this movie, I never even realized what they had to do for the acrobatics. Knowing it now just gives me a deeper appreciation for my favorite vampire flic.
I burst out laughing that Pepsi had an issue with their Pepsi max promo being in the shot and edlnded up asking for it to be changed to their base brand XD got a good giggle. Love this movie and the second was also not bad :) love the not so loveable baddy vamps. Love the channel :3
So I was at a family get together one time, i think it was a graduation party for my cousin's kid. Well my cousin's married to Sam Peckinpah's niece, who's step mom is Pamela Wallace, one of the screen writers of the movie Witness. Every time I'm at a party with her, we sit and talk about movies, so we were talking about comics and comic book movies (this was kind of towards the beginning of the comic book movie boom, and I had brought up Steve Niles and 30 Days of Night. I told her about the issues I had with the movie (the pacing was odd to me) and she told me it was one of her favorite horror films of that year and that she absolutely loved it. It was kind of funny hearing someone who won an oscar for screenwriting talk about how much she loved a movie that got panned by a lot of critics.
The Vampire Hunter subplot was changed and used as a web mini series that led into the film. Which was sad as we lost a great Helicopter crash sequence
plus the score for this movie was top-notch, that ending scene where Eben sees the sunrise... the music was incredible.
But the scene itself was so fkn stupid.
@@casualmma It was awesome.
this movie was really underrated
bigevilworldwide1 agreed
After all that 'twinkly' vampire 💩🤬 from those god-awful Twilight films,...30 was just what the genre needed to put the bloodsuckers back on track 👍
"30 Days Of Night" is one of my favorite vampire movies of all time. Especially in how the vampires were portrayed. They were so much more creepy and scary than any vampire I've seen before or since.
It would be mine too if Near Dark didn't exist.
Danny Huston was awesome in this film. One of the best on-screen vampires ever. The way he looked, the attitude he gave off and the authority he had... great performance.
Honestly the best vampire movie ive ever watched
love that part you put at the end, "god? **looks to the sky**.....no god."
One of my favorite vampire movies of all time. Top notch grim stuff.
Stannis Baratheon Hellsing.
Alucard, More Awesome Than Chuck Norris
I said movie, not anime, and even in terms of anime movies Vampire Hunter D is better than Hellsing.
Stannis Baratheon in what universe?
557deadpool dude, I like Hellsing. But Vampire Hunter D is on a whole different level. It is an absolute alltime-classic and leagues above Hellsing.
Stannis Baratheon no it really isn't, even taken on its own it's a pile of shit.
I grew up in northern Canada "Nunavut" where we have 24hour darkness all winter not just 30days.. I always thought this premise was scary
Kinda goofy considering he's basically giving a villain monologue to a complete stranger who can't even understand what he's saying.
I remember my wife and I received some Gold-Class cinema tickets as an anniversary gift and we turned up there without checking what was on. When I saw this movie listed in the foyer I (half-jokingly) suggested we watch it. To my surprise - she agreed! Writ In Water awww🤗 that's so sweet!
lol I hope she divorces you for taking her to the movies as an anniversary gift, what a romantic!
Matthew McDonald How much of either
A.) a supreme baiter
Or
B.) A complete and total friendless prick
do you have to be to type a comment like this
That's Awesome!!!
I love this wholesome comment. I bet you get all warm and fuzzy when you think about this memory, and sinking into a recliner next to her. I hope you still do stuff like this together.

One of the best vampire movies ever made.
This movie did for vampires, what American Werewolf in London.
Well said
I think the Blade movies were also good..
Adam Langfelder Bold Statement Indeed.. I Favor Interview with a Vampire myself.. Then Bram Stoker's Dracula.. Then Blade of Course.
Interview With A Vampire received a lion's share of the blame for wussifying the blood suckers as I remember with Anne Rice's take on the undead. It did remind me of that film
Excellent movie. People often miss that it is a love story.
Yeah I really love the setting of this movie. Just that it being dark outside for 30 days so there's no escape and the Heavy snowy weather really makes this a awesome setting. Really cool concept.

loved this film, a different take i loved they even had a language of their own
Could you do a video on the 1997 film Cube?

This movie was pretty good. But it did not scare me, it was just refreshing to see vampires sucking bloody instead of falling in love with someone.
Heh, that's true. It was practically anti-Twilight.
It scared the crap outta me when i was like 15
It's creepy. Not scary, but definitely creepy. One of my favorite Vamp films.
Talia Price to be fair, vampires aren't scary. I mean when cold water can kill them it just ruins any fear.
hell they can't even come into your house unless you invite them.
557deadpool blood sucking is not scary to you?
i remember that this terifies me as a kid. love it and indeed one of the last true vampire films.
HitsuTwistedTalong have you became a Gundam yet
The kid scene is one of the creepiest horror scenes ever. Love how the lead Vamp had no CGI.
I just love this movie. Was lucky to catch it on the big screen and left the cinema in total shock. The whole passage where they hide out in the attic was so intense.
Also one of my favorite entries to the genre in the last two decades.

Well said.
Geahk Burchill I film can be still a classic even though it's newer XD
Near Dark was such a good movie. I saw it because you mentioned it in this video and it's now one of my fav vampire movies.
Maxx Nieves A demon? i didn't hear any of that
Vampirism is said to boost the beast inside of us when you transform the humanity side loses and you become a humanoid monster
I'm a new writer that loves fantasy. My book features werewolves and vampires, but they're nothing like twilight. Solid movie, really wished this had set the standard for vampire films in the following years rather than Twilight. What a bummer.
Its depressing how the 1000s of years of vampire stories have been thrown out in favor of "misunderstood pretty boy"
It didn't set a standard, it just created a new subgenre of Vamps, for better or worse.
I watch this every winter. In North Scotland we have 6 weeks of Perpetual sunlight in summer and 6 weeks Perpetual darkness in winter.
Thats gotta be both cool and scary.
@@GoodBadFlicks Haha, yeah in the summer it's like Insomnia and in the winter 30 days of night.

While I enjoyed the movie, anytime they tried to use establishing shots or show the surroundings of Barrow there was uproarious laughter in the theater from the local crowd. Also, having the pipeline run through Barrow was pretty funny as well.
OMG I literally finished this movie a couple hours ago and was thinking it would be perfect for this channel. Amazing
Not to nitpick, but isn't that Danny Huston, not Doug Huston, playing the vampire leader Marlow? Son of the late, great John Huston, btw. Great review, as always, though. An underrated movie, for sure.
Yup. That was hurtful to the ears.
Yep. Came here to say the same.
He has bizarre pronunciation. I think he has issues with reading.
Was about to put the same thing lol still great video
Lol! I think it's actually Angelica Huston.
I have this on DVD and I rarely watch it because honestly it scares me, lol! Danny Houston is a beast in this movie to the point where everything else I see him in I am leery of him. He made a perfect vampire. Terrifying.....
Liked this WAY more than I thought I would. It was good too see vampires be monsters again.
Kudos to them for using mostly practical effects! So many movies rely so heavily on CG these days. It's always refreshing to see someone realize practical effects can be just as good.

I fucking adore this film. One of my all time favourites. Going to watch it tonight again now.

I suggest you From dusk till dawn!
That was an interesting way to illustrate the vampire sub genre. Ancient vampires are much more interesting with their own language and cat like features and super vicious. I saw some behind the scenes where Danny Huston practising the tribal sounds, it was funny.
David Slade is an incredible television director too. His work on Hannibal is some of my favourite.
Hell yeah.
Really love your series. Subscribed
Great movie with fantastic acting, flaweless surroundings and actually scary vampires. A true gem of a movie.
One of my fav horror movies. Not a happy ending, even tho they live - mostly. Very good vampire adaptation.
The flyover massacre is one one the most striking scenes I've ever watched. Brilliant.

Angelica Huston's halfbrother, he played the Ax Man in AS Coven and Striker in Wolverine Origins.

I'm tired of sentimental vampires. These ghoulish vampires are not only ugly but they are truly terrifying. Luv these types.
thank you! been hoping you would cover this.
Cecil, I loved this movie. It's one of the best vampire movies, way better than Twilight.
Lamont Smith Watch Hellsing
Lamont Smith any vampire movie is better than Twilight...
I really enjoy your reviews of each movie. You definitely do a lot of research and present it in a very likable way. I share many opinions with you so maybe thats why i like them. In any case keep up the great videos.
30 Days and Let The RIght One In, quality vampire flicks!!

Thank you for referencing Near Dark. Best vampire movie ever!
Cec, you are the best, I always learn lots from your videos and always laugh out loud; especially the bits at the end.
Thanks!
When I first watched this movie, I never even realized what they had to do for the acrobatics. Knowing it now just gives me a deeper appreciation for my favorite vampire flic.
So good and perfect example of how Great a low budget movie can be when the e executives dont hinder the directors
30 day of night is a awsome vampire film with some great gore and fx and some good acting.
The Vampire Hunter subplot was changed and used as a web mini series that led into the film. Which was sad as we lost a great Helicopter crash sequence
Another excellently informative review. Adding this to the watch list pronto
The graphic novel concept sounds a lot like the Masquerade: Bloodlines, which has been slated for a sequel next march. Super cool
