Oh man.. some people dont understand that the important thing is not the equipment,its your embrochure: when u are a classical player and you play a jazzy mouthpiece, u just have a bright classical sound! It's you, who plays the instrument and not the mouthpiece or smth like that :)

Using the classical setup to play jazz kind of reminds me of putting higher gauge strings on a guitar or maybe even using flatwounds and playing saturated fusion-y legato stuff. As you go up in string gauge you get a stronger more focused fundamental but deaden liveliness/overtones and response and it becomes more difficult to execute certain techniques

3:20 I wonder if your response problems would go away if you put the reed down more instead of having it poke out from the mouthpiece. Put the tip of the reed in the middle of the thickness of the top of the mouthpiece bite or under. This with a ligature not so tight will improve your response. Love you dude.

For example the upright bass also has to be set up differently and the right hand technique is kind of the opposite. Even though it's the same instrument and when you listen, you recognize that it's the same instrument, nevertheless the genre imposes its own rules.

What reeds do you play on for both setups? I too use a Selmer Concept and it’s AMAZING. I pair it with a 2.5 Vandoren V12 And for Jazz NY Meyer 7 w/ V16 2.5 reeds.
A person I know you already ordered the mouthpiece, but in the future if you’re looking for new equipment your best choice is to try them in person. I have a Vandoren V16 A8, but I really wished I had tried Meyers, ottolinks, Berge Larson’s, etc. But none the less a Meyer 6M is a great mouthpiece, hope you enjoy it

im very upset. i play bari for my school jazz band, and yesterday we were supposed to get our jazz mouthpieces (we'd been playing on classical ones up until now) but my ligature didn't fit on it. So my teacher just said "we'll get you a fitting ligature by the end of the summer." so now i think im really behind because i think the transition from classical to jazz mouthpieces is pretty severe. Am I overreacting, or is the change really as bad as i'm told? how can i still try to get used to the jazz mouthpiece before i have it?

You can get a jazzy sound no matter what setup you have - even a classical mp + reed. You’re just better off with certain serious corresponding to what your goal sound is.
What a lot of people are for getting in classical music from about the 40/50s saxophone do not exist in classical music so no point in learning classic with a sax, just learn to play the sax. It's ok to learn classical but make up your mind to switch in the future
What reeds do you use for both genres? I’ve been using d’addario reserve 3.0+, but I find that I’m only getting 3/4 useable reeds, even with a reed geek. For jazz, I’ve used d’addario select jazz 3.5 filed, mostly cause I just like them better than vandorens.

I read that most classical mouthpieces have large chambers in order to achieve a dark sound, whilst jazz mpcs have smaller chambers to speed up the air flow and achieve a brighter sound. This is the opposite of what you said here. Which is it?
It is two totally different disciplines. If you're not doing classical everyday, a player has no idea. If you're not improvising everyday you will have no clue.

the other piece i have mouthpiece is s80 selmer.
I started on the 4c but now use a Meyer.
