Hardie doesn't match the deeper shadows of the original siding (I know, there is an addition that is sided with Hardie plank) and it doesn't match the sidewalk appeal of the older houses in our neighborhood. By the way, I had to replace a lot of the then-17-year-old OSB on the addition in 2015. Is exterior-grade plywood a better material for the sheathing?
Zip is what you want. It installs the same as osb but, it's Coates with a moisture resistant coating and does not require Tyvek. The product has a 30 year warranty.
@@Flat_Stanley The problem with Zip is that its perm is only 1, so it will not pass water vapor away from the stud cavity, which, over time, will lead to condensation on the inner surface of the Zip, which could then lead to rot/mildew on any thing contacting the Zip: studs, sills, headers
When you figure out the square footage do you subtract for window and door openings and only include the portions that will actually have new siding on them? Or do you include the size of the entire wall including window and door openings?
More accurate answer: you don't count them for ordering your siding, you count in the installation price (usually more expensive) because they have to work around all the doors, windows and exits
Just had a Hardie installer quote a small job at my house to replace a settings floor cedar shingle tear out and replace. It's 220 square feet total. The quote came in this morning at $9,200. Freaking crazy. The quote was itemized by material and labor costs. Materials alone were over $6,000. It's like 10 Hardie panels! How the hell?

Hmm.... company just quoted me $77K to do my whole house, at 3120 sq feet. Yes it is an old house, and the original siding from the 70s is shot and one small side wall is rotten so likely some extra work there. And it is a split entry 2 story, so like 3 stories high on the back. But $77K? After watching this video, I feel like their quote is way too high.... I'm in the Seattle area, but the company is in everywhere from WA state to TX.

Yes it does. But it will be closer to $12/sqft than $6/sqft depending on the amount of OSB needed to be replaced.

We subtract windows, garage, any openings.

But they will add $$$$ because they have to cut and go around all the windows. The siding is not the expensive part. It's the labor!!

Or there screwing you.. im doing a workshop siding tear off redo with hardie add sheathing etc. A little over 700 sf. Quote was 17k.
Material wasnt even 6k with sheathing waterproofing flashing etc. The hardie was 1600. To give you an idea..
