Why do Startups fail? | Bikash Barai | TEDxIITKharagpur

  • This video is a part of the talks given at TEDxIITKharagpur 2015, produced independently of the TED conferences. In a highly competitive world, most startups believe that their success is hinged on the execution of a ground-breaking idea, and their failure is often attributed to bad execution to the said idea. But in this talk, Bikash Barai explains why execution is only secondary, primary being the idea itself. Through his own experience as a founder, Barai urges people to look for problems instead of ideas as an idea that solves a great problem is what makes the idea truly ingenious.
An expert in the field of Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Hacking, Social Engineering and Attack Simulation; under his leadership, iViZ became one of the top 6 cloud-based security companies as recognised by the US Navy, US Department of Homeland Security and London Business School. He has done a double B.Tech in 'Computer Science' and 'Architecture', and a Masters in 'Computer Science and Information Technology' from IIT Kharagpur. He is passionate in his efforts to promote entrepreneurship and is a leading member at TiE and is an iSpirit Fellow.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Mostly true. However what problems did Facebook or smartphones solve? None! Some needs are created.

India has a million problems, look around and see them. If we want to solve them, it will create 100 million useful jobs, a million problems will be solved and India will become a fully developed country by 2020. Bikash is absolutely right, we do not teach students to look for real problems and that is one major reasons we are still a "developing country".
Let's look for and solve practical problems.

Thinking that the problem is far more important than your idea is an oversimplification.
The idea is also important as it's your proposed way of solving the problem you've chosen to solve. Without an idea, which is really your way of delivering value via solving a problem (or, more broadly, providing a benefit since not all businesses are built on resolving some problem for a consumer), you don't have a business.

there is the classic store with brick and mortar
      let's call it 1.0
in this store, products almost never change
and the owner chose the products
      it is boring
now, there must be a new store
      let's call it 2.0
in this store, products always change
and people choose the products there will be via an app
on the app, there is a huge catalog, people choose the products that will show up in the store
the store is constantly being supplied with the products people choose

May not be the deepest in regards to content, but definitely an eye opener to get many in the right mindset of not just thinking about the next great idea, but also considering if your ideas solve a problem. Problems lead to needs in an industry marketplace. In order to make money in that industry, someone needs to provide solutions to those problems. The "great idea" is usually based around a solution for that problem that people would be willing to pay for. It doesn't always start with "the big idea", but more so the big problem.

this is just the central concept of taoism.. he applied it for a startup and he succeeded .. majority fail because of the pessimism that lurks inside them, killing the core system of belief.. feed the believing person and you shall grow inwards and outwards..

If problem hardness and solution effective are in balance and evolve together - PRACTICAL.
If problem is too tough to solve, or solution is less effective - IMPRACTICAL
Startup would succeed if it lands in PRACTICAL bucket. Else fail.
But anyway, fun of startup is solving and learning !

90 percent failure is actually ten percent success. If you compare it to any other pursuit like cracking IIT, iim or even sevil service..
You find the the probability of you getting successful.
