You are an INCREDIBLE teacher. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your thorough and complete directions. What a gift you are. THANK YOU so much. This is the best tutorial I have ever seen. Be well and thank you again for the free pattern.
If you’re about to make your first quilt, please please watch this tutorial! It is by far the best! Thank you so much for making such a clear step by step tutorial on quilting! I was able to make my first one with ease and enjoy this process because of how clearly everything is explained
Agreed. I have been quilting since the 80’s
3r
Yay!! I started sewing a couple months ago with your scrunchie tutorial. I’m so interested in quilts but a little intimidated. This video is GOLD.
Oh good! Yay! I hope you try out making a quilt. I will be sharing more quilting videos as I make more things!
I found you through lockdown and I have found your explanations excellent. Thanks to you I've done your scrunchie, skirts, reversible bag and now made a quilt. You are a fantastic teacher.
I’m more a garment sewer, but this video has me wanting to make a quilt. Thank you, this is definitely the ultimate quilt video 😍
Hahaha. I totally hear you! I was not into quilting until a couple years ago and then it just hit me :) Now I want to make more and more! :) I hope you try one out! - Dana
You are a wonderful person and you do wonderful things. Thank you.
Haha. Thanks! :)
Thank you! Can’t wait to make this quilt. Yeah, my weekend project.
Oh good! I love the excitement of a new project! yay! Have fun with it :) - Dana
Your way is so much easier. Simple. This will be my first quilt x
Seriously, you just have a way of explaining everything so simply, you take the fear out of trying new things. Please keep making these videos and keeping everything so fun and simple. Thank you!
I continue to refer back to her videos when learning sewing techniques. When she even said about pre-washing fabrics being a personal preference, it’s like a huge weight was just lifted off of my shoulder. The way she explained it made so much sense
I agree ❤️😊
I had no idea quilting was so fascinating. Here's a recent feature on the New England Quilt Museum: ua-cam.com/video/OB0iQ8Pp5ek/v-deo.html
Beautiful idea
Agreed!
I can’t wait to make my first Quilt for my first grandchild 🥹 Best video I’ve seen! Thank you.🩷
The jelly roll quilt and rag quilt were my first. This is another great quilt that isn't too difficult for anyone to try. Thanks for sharing!
Brilliant video - just started quilting and was about to give up - thanks to this video I will persevere and try again

I love all your videos !!! You are so easy to follow. I have made many first day dresses for my little girl for lots of holidays.
Thanks Kelly! I'm glad you made some dresses. I'm sure your little girl was thrilled :) Dana
So excited to get started, I too love the simplicity of your tutorial you make it easy to follow! Thank you for the free pattern 😊
Aw thank you! I hope you have fun making a quilt! This makes me want to start another one too :) haha.
I also have found I prefer to quilt diagonally than straight lines, my quilt seems to look nice and flatter ( when using square blocks)
These are very complete instructions for the whole quilt, easy for a beginner to follow. I've made a couple of patchwork mini learner quilts, am ready to try this one, it's so pretty.
I hope you have fun making a larger quilt! It's such a great creative adventure. Thanks for watching! - Dana
I forgot to comment, I made my first project with what I learned watching this video.
I made a blanket for my niece, it was wonderful. I didn't use strips, I did it with squares and quilt diagonally and the result couldn't have been better. Thanks for your class!
BEST quilt making video ever!! I can't wait to get started! Thanks for breaking it down and making it so simple!
Thank you so much! I hope you have fun sewing a quilt! - Dana
What a great video! And not just for quilting :). Dana explains how to measure and cut fabric on a mat, something that is not told in a lot of other sewing videos. Thank you Dana, you are a great teacher!
Dana,
Thank you so much for the video! Your step-by-step instruction are so helpful and easy to follow! I quilted a printed panel and your binding instructions were the best!! I think I may have to give a whole quilt a try using your pattern!!
Thank you so much! You have taught me so much
Dana I just love you! I'm not sure I'm ready for a quilt yet, but I do love your personality and your ways of teaching! Thank you 😊💕
Hahaha. Thanks :) When you're ready to tackle a quilt, I'll still be here! haha. - Dana
I love the look of machine binding as well as the speediness. Plus I have arthritis in my hands... So its a good thing I like the look of machine binding!
Yes, machine binding is fantastic! I know many quilters who prefer to bind that way :)
GREAT VIDEO !!! I learned A LOT !!!
You are the best teacher of quilting.
Thank you! I hope to share more quilting videos on here! :) - Dana
Дана, спасибо Вам за великолепный урок, с огромным удовольствием смотрю Ваши проекты
You are my favorite UA-cam human! I am a 66 year old beginner and I have made several of your projects. Thank you sooooo much for your time and effort! I always said I would never make a quilt, but here I am, because of you.
Oh my gosh, Barbara! Thank you!! What a sweet comment. You really made me smile :) I'm glad you feel empowered to do it and try new projects! Thanks for watching and have fun! - Dana
Anytime I need help with something I always look up your videos. You never disappoint.
Awww Thank you Jackie :) That makes me happy to hear! You make it all worth it! :)
I love this. You make me believe I can finally make my first quilt. Thanks!
Yay! congrats! That's such a great feeling! Have fun making more quilts!
You are wonderful!
Great video, shows exactly what needs to be done. Thnx 💓🌺😃
Sure! I hope you try making one! It's a fun process and adventure :) - Dana
Ah, that makes sense now - I've made rag quilts (very rough DIY but I had fun making them!) and they didn't get that cool wrinkly look, but now I know it's because the fabric was old (pre-loved!) and washed many times already. Good to know though! :)
Oh good! I'm glad that makes sense.
I pieced my quilt weeks ago but can’t get the knack of doing free motion quilting. I never thought straight lines could look so effective and sending it out to a free arm quilter is really expensive. Thanks for a great tutorial
Yea, sewing lines is really fun! Have fun quilting your quilt top :) - Dana
This is amazing thank you so much!!!
I love watching your channel. I just started sewing, I make the scrunches from your Channel and I wanted to make a quilt and now I can. Thank you x
Oh good awesome Laura! I’m so happy to hear that! Scrunchies are a really fun project ☺️
I had to pause the video. Best video that explains binding. 👍🏾
I love this quilt so much! I think I need to try it. Thank you!
I love your energy! This video was so helpful, thanks !
Thanks! I hope you have fun making a quilt!
Thanks for the video! I've always wanted to learn how to quilt.
Oh good! It's such a fun process!
I so need this video. Love everything you do, Dana!!
Thank you Ellen :) Dana
Love everything except the hand sewing. lol. I will def. machine bind. Great tutorial. Thank you.
If you all are ever at the dollar tree, their rotary cutters work so well. It’s the only cutter I’ve ever bought. They have cutting boards too but they’re smaller than 8x10
good to know. Thanks!
Wow, great video instruction. I'm giving this a go. Just ordered the Squeeze lemon, and orange fabric on Etsy.tfs!
Loved this! REALLY excellent teacher and video!!
Thank you so much Connie :) Dana
Excellent video! Very comprehensive and easy to follow. Thank you so much!
Gave you a thumbs up before I even watched this video because Ive been wanting to make a quilt forever!!! Can't wait until I can finish my current project (painting a mural on my daughter's wall) and figure out this!! :)
Awesome! And so cool that you’re painting a mural! 🙌🙌
Such a great tutorial! I have always wanted to make a quilt so after watching your video, I might have to try! Thanks for the instructions!
Thanks Connie! I hope you give it a try! It's been such a fun adventure for me :) - Dana
So awesome!! I didn't think sewing a quilt would be in my future until I saw your video! Thank you so much!!! 😍
You are a wonderful teacher.
I love the quilt. So much easier than the 1,122 HST king size I made last year
What a great video. You did an excellent job explaining and demonstrating the entire process. I really enjoyed watching. You have an enthusiastic voice that is pitched just right. I feel encouraged and motivated to make this quilt. Thank you. I hope you do more tutorials.
V beautiful work.
Great video
Dana taught me to make zipper bags (took me HOURS) and now I’m a quilt designer! Each pillow case, zipper bag, and quilt has taught me so much. Thanks, Dana!!!
Oh my gosh that's so awesome to hear that! I'm so happy you're designing quilts! Way to go! Thanks for sharing that with me :) Dana
She's teaching me too!
Really amazing you made this easy
🥳🥳🥳👍🤣Missed U, glad ur back n excited to watch learn n make🥳🥳👍👍
❤❤Really enjoyed your video and your enthusiasm. Made really think I can do it, helped me learn better🥰
Thanks so much for such great and clear instructions! Really enjoyed your video!
Thank you Naomi :) Dana
Bezaubernd schön, herzlichen Dank. LG aus Ostholstein Germany
I love your videos . Thank you so much for encouraging me to sew again ♡ xxx
I want to thank you for your upbeat personality and clarity in teaching sewing. I had a brain injury after a lung transplant so I have had to relearn many many things again, and still, many things don’t stay in my brain. Please pat yourself on the back because anyone that can explain things to a person with a brain injury, and be as inviting as you are, deserves milk and cookies for life! True, there are times I want to smack the back of your head- in a loving way- because you make it look so easy and mine is always a little more wonky! But a lot of that is my brain dropping information and not only sew the wrong sides together once and have to rip it out, but sometimes I do it two or three times! We call it the new comedy act! Thank you for what you do! It makes a difference in this persons life.
Awesome teaching video! I would love to see many more from you.
And this is where I’d carry on sewing for 15 minutes before realising one of the threads had run out. 😂 this is absolutely beautiful 😍
😂😂 Definitely been there, done that. haha
Great tutorial!!!
Thanks so much for another great video. Hoping to make lap quilt soon! Love your videos!! Thanks again ! 😍
Great work💕💕💕 🔔🎉🎉🎉🙏
I bought some fabric at the beginning of the summer with the intention of making a quilt but, I was too overwhelmed with the quilt I wanted to make. I am going to try again and make this quilt instead.
Cute!
Hi Dana, would it be too much to request for you to make a video on making a bucket hat? I have seen some but i want your version.
Oh that's a really fun idea. I'll have to think about that. Thanks! - Dana
Your back good to see you .Great tutorial thank you 😊🥰🌷👍👏
Just when you think you never want to make a quilt, along comes Dana, showing you how fun and easy it is to make a quilt.
I’m now off to my sewing room to gather items to start making a quilt.
LOL. Hahah. I'm glad you feel inspired!
Yeah this looks fun i want to try making it, it looks simple enough for a beginner i suppose its its something to practice, no matter what it turns out you can still be proud of your hard work
Very good
Woooow so beautiful.. I must make it. Thank you dia
I'm new to quilting and I made my daughter a quilt and I wish I would have seen your videos before I made it. You are a good teacher. I'm gonna be getting ready to make another one and I'm using your tips. Is there some type of quilting stencils we can use if we want some flower, or paisley type quilting stitches? I'm super new so I don't 100 percent know what I'm doing
Love this quilt! Great to see you again❤
I just found you and I love this quilt. I am 78 and watching video's to learn to make a quilt I think this is so nice. I am so happy to have found you. This looks like an easy one. Thank you so much. Wouldn't a walking foot work for doing the lines so you don't have to mark it?It has that long piece which can line it up. Watching Lorena's channel she does the long arm quilting she said allow enough extra because quilting takes up fabric.
Hi Donna. Thanks for watching! Yes, you can use a walking foot, that's a great option! I wanted to show people how to do it without one. But you can use the little guide that comes on it to gauge where your lines should be. And yes, for longarm quilting you want the Backing and Batting to be 8 inches larger than the quilt top.
Using painters tape! This is brilliant! My LEAST favorite part of quilting just got so much easier. From one teacher to another, you really are very good at thoroughly explaining each step.
Aw thank you so much Susie! :) Dana
I'm not so nimble and fit as Dana to get down on the floor, so I have to use a wall. But it works!
Painters tape is like WD-40, it has a million and one uses.
Dana I thank you for this quilt video. I have learned a lot from you so far making pillows and other items. I'm not a big fan of strips however and I was wondering if you could just make the quilt using solids or decorative fabric without any stripes? I am a total beginner never making a quilt before.
I have a question about the batting and the backside of the quilt. Instead of adding the batting in the middle of the quilt can you skip that step and just add fleece for the back? Kind of combine this video with your How to Make a Self-Binding Sherpa Fleece Blanket
Yes, you could use fleece or minky, etc to the back! Quilting and sewing are adventures....so if you're unsure, my instinct is to always just go for it! And see what happens :)
I would really like to quilt something too when I see this. Nice video =)
btw, watching this from europe, where we do not use inch. I am always a bit overwhelmed with the calculation. 🤣
Hi there, I know I'm sorry about that. I wish we used the metric system here. With some of my garment patterns I try to include cm and metric info. But I haven't worked that out yet with quilting. I think some quilters in Europe may use the imperial system?...only because most of the quilting info out there is with imperial measurements. But I'm not totally sure on that. Sorry! - Dana
I'm an old quilter, and I'm so glad you encouraged a new quilter to sew their binding on by hand! That was very refreshing. You did a great tutorial for a new quilter. They need to learn by watching the step by step process so they won't tend to skip very important steps in a rush to get their quilt finished. In quilting something to be proud of, it can take time. So many try and break a speed record to get them done. Each quilt is a journey, and you should enjoy each journey. ❤ Thank you for sharing your talent with us.
I am a new quilter (I have been quilting since 2021) and I totally recommend hand sewing your binding! It is so much easier and less overwhelming than sewing it with the machine.
I have never made a quilt in my life but after seeing your video I want to make one!! Thank you for explaining this method so well x
Omg well somewhere along the way I must have seen/heard to go from one direction to the opposite! Starting in the center from one side to the other.. 😂what?? I just made one and it is the wonkiest quilt ever! Lots of puckers too …
I have seen more than 100 videos about quilting and I am sure you are the best teacher in this art.
Thank you so much.
Mo from Vancouver
Haha. Wow, thank you! I appreciate the great feedback! :) Have fun sewing! Dana
I taught patchwork and quilting for 25years and was feeling a bit jaded but your video is great. We’ve a new baby on the way and I know what my next project will be. Thanks for a fun clear video.
I am a total newbie and have been researching the baby lock joy for a while now. After seeing your video, I want to make a quilt now! Do you think the Joy can do quilting too?
Oh awesome! I love the Joy machine. I think the Joy would work well for piecing a quilt together. I haven't tried quilting on it yet (quilting the sandwich layers together) but I need to do that so I can report back to you all!
@@MADEEveryday that would be wonderful, thank you!
I have watched this video probably 25 times studying every word and every detail. Now finishing 2 baby size striped quilts in 2 weeks. First time making a quilt!! Thank you so much
Hahahah. Thanks Roslyn! That makes me happy to hear! Yay! I was worried that the video would be too long, since I included all the steps in one place. But then I also thought that would be helpful so you don't have to click around to multiple videos to find everything. I'm glad you're on your 2nd quilt now! 🙌🙌Have fun making more! - Dana
I've always wanted to make a quilt but felt intimidated. You're video made is less complicated and approchable. Thanks!
Oh good yay! That makes me happy to hear! Have fun sewing! Dana
Who makes the hot dog fabrics? My hubby will love that
The hot dog fabric is by me! :) All the fabrics in this quilt are my own designs. My fabrics are manufactured by FIGO Fabrics, and you can find them in online shops. The hot dogs, oranges, and small florals are from my SQUEEZE collection and the stars and big floral are from my BUTTERSCOTCH collection. Search online for "Dana Willard fabric" or "Dana Willard squeeze fabrics" or "Dana Willard figo fabrics" etc and you'll see shops that carry my fabrics. Check etsy.com (lots of shops that carry them), fabric.com, Amazon, etc.
Here are some shops that have the hot dogs:
www.etsy.com/search?q=dana+willard+fabric+hot+dog
Are you getting back into more regular uploads? I really enjoy your energy and your tutorials! I haven’t been subscribed for too long but I hope you’ve been okay 😊
Yes! And thank you. I wish I could post every week but it's just not feasible with life and other things. So I try to get one up each month! :) Thanks for watching! Dana
@@MADEEveryday oh I totally get that! Keep well ❤️
Thank you! This has really given me the inspiration to try a quilt of my own. ❤️
Thank you so much for this video and pattern. This is the best tutorial I have seen. I have made a quilt before but it has been a while. I just have a question: since I am making the twin size and have to sew strips together to make it 70” long, do I sew the seam at a diagonal or straight when sewing them together? Hope that makes sense. Thank you again! ❤
Hi! I'm glad you enjoyed it! That's a good question about the seams. Typically in quilting you would sew those with a straight seam. But you're right, you could sew it with a diagonal bias seam (like we do with the quilt binding pieces in the video). I guess that's just preference (and it would require more fabric per strip, to account for the bias cut ends) For the aesthetic of this quilt, I would prob do a straight seam....I think that with all the straight lines in the design, that would look best. Hope that helps! - Dana
Wow thank you for getting back to me so fast! Yes I agree and think I will do the straight seam. I already cut my strips so I’m ready to start sewing yay! However, I realized I cut my strips at 4 1/2” instead of 4 1/4” lol. So I need to go back and trim them. I guess it’s better they are too wide rather than too small lol. Well thank you so much for your help and your amazing teaching and sewing talent. You helped me get out of my rut and start quilting again. You are so appreciated! ❤
@@TK.Love7 Don't worry about trimming them down! You can make the stripes 4 1/2"...totally fine! And I'm so happy you're excited to quilt again! I was in a sewing rut in general a few years ago, and started making a quilt and it got me creatively excited again. So that's awesome! Have fun making your quilt! 🥰 - Dana
Oh awesome that just made me feel so much better. I appreciate it so much! I am going to get started asap. Thank you so much! Take care!
Where have you been you always give good sewing ideas and now quilting. Love it Thanks
How does it stay together after u cut some of the string area u sewed?
Are u using a regular sewing machine or one made for quilting?
I'm using a standard sewing machine. I'm not sure what part you're referring to. The raw edges where I cut the strings ends up being bound around the edge with the binding, so everything is enclosed! So there are no "loose strings" :) Hopefully that's what you were referring to.
This video is so perfect. Thorough, well lit, clear visuals, simple and complete. Beyond impressed with not just the content but the labour I know that went into making this tutorial. I can not thank you enough.

Dana I haven’t made a quilt before but you inspired me to make the stripes one on your video. How do I get the pattern details please? Thanks Sue 😊
Hi Sue, you can download the pattern for free on my site:
shop.madeeveryday.com/products/stripey-quilt-pattern-free
THANK YOU FOR THIS ALL IN ONE VIDEO. It's been tough digging through hundreds of videos and "piecing together" what I need. I'm going to hand quilt, but this is so thorough I understand the basics and apply it to my project. Bless you!
