Fabulous Tutorial Claire! You showed me that it is actually possible to use colored pencils to create a piece of jewelry that looks like it was made from a real metal, precious or otherwise! I haven't seen gold, bronze, silver, copper, or brass that actually looks anything like the real thing when using a metallic pencil to color: a statue, steel pipes, a vase, a coin, a necklace, or the shiny dress harness and bridle on a parade horse. Thank you!
Excellent tutorial...thank you Claire... perhaps you could do one coloring silver... your instructions are always clear and easy to understand. Thanks 🌹
I agree!! I always like to use silver more than I do gold for some reason. I'm not a gold person in everyday life either. Mabe rose gold but I much prefer silver
Thank you for sharing these techniques on coloring gold. I hope to learn how to color silver, copper and bronze in the future. Thank you for demonstrating with two brands of pencils. Very helpful.
I just literally squealed at finding a Claire tutorial that includes polychromos! I don't have prismacolor so it's always hard to follow tutorials that use them.
I know this is a year old, but just had to tell you how very helpful this is to this newbie. The fact that you did it in two different pencil lines was also a great idea. Now to go tackle silver! Thanks so much.
Just the best tutorial. I really like the way you show the colors used and numbers. It is so helpful! (and the practice pages!) Excellent as always! Thanks for taking the time of doing it so it's easy to follow along!
Hi Claire, love your channel and this video is no exception. Thanks so much for showing your technique in both Prismacolor and Polychromos and for explaining it so clearly. Feels far less daunting now and your results are so much more realistic than with the metallic pencils. I too would love to see a similar tutorial for silver please. Thanks Claire. 😀
wow! i can't believe how dynamic that came out! with your clear instructions, I'm a bit more confident to try to create the illusion of gold. Thank you Claire! wish me luck :D
Another great video just at the right time. I have ordered my first set of 12 polychromo and have the sets of Prismacolor up to 72 which is still too much for me right now. Lots of Grey's etc. More videos to watch! I must limit myself too much information and I will lose whatever I pick up a long the way. Smiles.
Hi Claire having just come home from emergency hospital I was pleasantly surprised to see so many uploaded videos from yourself. I am gradually catching up. Your tutorials are excellent as always. Keep up the good work - you are amazing - sending you lots of love and best wishes xx
Glad I came back to this. Don’t know how the thumbs down got clicked. I corrected that! Sheesh. I used this tutorial for gold on one of Johanna’s WOF pics. Looks fantastic! I don’t understand how anyone could not like this tutorial.
Thank you so much for this video! A very straight forward yet very effective way to colour gold and i can now start using this technique in my colouring books :)
The Blick Studio pencil gold is pretty decent as well as the Pablo's gold they're my favorite by far most metallic pencils I find scratchy even the holbiens which are like the Cadillac of pencils
Hi Claire, I can’t stand metallic pencils, I usually toss them in the bin. I prefer doing gold with my Polys, and your gold was beautiful using them! Has your gold combo changed over the years…Thank you so much for sharing!
After chores I'm definitely using this combo to begin in my Ivy and the Inky Butterfly. It will be my first attempt at gold, skin, and hair lol hopefully I don't ruin anything. But I'm doing like you said pick one aspect in a super busy page and finish that then move along. I would love to see how you colored the Raven in that book. I want mine to be black with hints of blue and turquoise shining through. Hopefully I'll be able to figure out how to achieve that
OMG you are so talented who would of thought using those colors it would turn out that amazing. It's fabulous. Thank you for sharing your amazing talent's with us all the time. I learn something new with every single video you do for us. Truly appreciate all you do your Artistic talent is fabulous. You are a Amazing colorist as well. I look forward to watching your videos so much. Thanks again dear you are also a very kind lady. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much Claire. Your tutorial is excellent! It is relly helpful! I was looking for a way to colour gold and your tutorial made it easy for me!Thanks a million sweet lady
The color is definitely better but they need to have reflections in them to make them look metal. I appreciate the pencil numbers/names to help me choose. :)
Me after you used the metallic pencils: "That looks alright" Me after you used regular pencils: "Nope, the metallic doesn't look so good." That was so cool to watch. I've been using the metallic pencils, but I'll definitely be trying your technique instead!
I love the Prismacolor pencil in gold....I think it's a matter of preference, tho. However, Inktense and Polychromos are my favorite pencils for other shades of metallic colors even tho I love the Prismacolor version of gold more. The Polychromos gold isn't good I have to agree although the shine and tone of the gold is lovely. I have found that the Prismacolor and Polychromos gold really blend well together to get a shaded look. The Prismacolor helps to smoothe the waxier texture of Polychromos while the tone of the Polychromos compliments and tones the Prismacolor. Try them together. Your technique and finished result is really beautiful!
Thank you, Claire. I have learned so much through all your tutorials!!! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! How do you keep track of all your color combos for different things??
This left me wondering what to do with those useless gold pencil color...haha..does anyone here wondering the same? Thank you so much by the way Claire.... I have been looking for this tutorial and find yours very useful and brilliant...Thank you !
Yunieke, I've been wondering the exact same thing. Where *do* I apply them? I have all these mostly unused gold and silver pencils because my method of doing gold and silver is similar to Claires. I've always felt those two metallic pencils are just a waste in color pencil sets.
Silver, gold and copper/bronze pencils might not be good enough for drawing actual metals, but you can use them in other situations. You can use them as any other pencil in gray, yellow and brown spectrum. I use gold and copper pencils to draw hair, wood, autumn grass, etc. Similarly with silver you can draw hair and fur, and all sorts of textures, surfaces, and materials that have gray colour in them. Who knows, you might even manage to draw metallic objects with them if you leave out empy spaces and vary tones in the objects you draw. You can also use silver, gold and copper pencils in the more decorative or cartoony VS realistic art. Of course, everything you draw with metallic pencils will have a bit of sheen to it. This can be a problem or a bonus depending on your goals in drawing.
The lightest color for your burnisher. Thanks for that little gem.
You amaze me with how simple you make things. Very beginner-friendly and beyond. Thank you!
The second set is definitely better. Excellent tutorial!
I can’t believe how real they look using the shades of yellow amazing

Aly Lyu -thanks so much for the helpful info!
Thanks for doing this tutorial with Pollychromos.
Thank you for making the "Masja's Mandelas" colouring book international.
Thought I was the only one who dislike how the metallic color penicls markers gel pens come out.. I would have to take a class on blending
Perfect
thank you
Hi, I'm wanting to make this affect with brutfuner 120 square set. I am unsure if you have them? I have picked some colours but not 100% sure on it.
What colors do you combine to make gold
Browns and yellows, all the info is on the video :)
Thanks!
does anyone know the RGB or Hex of these colors?
If you combine the 2 colors of gold in the first ring jou have a better result.
Thank sweetheart
How did you learn what colours to blend together is there a chart some where.
Just by eye
Not bad but some of your shadows are in the wrong spots and you have no shadow on the ring underneath the top ring.
