    80k DR controller player here, the main issue with pad on this game is the insane turning speed limit imposed by the game which makes certain corner types almost impossible to replicate on pad vs wheel. Going from full lock to full lock takes roughly twice as long as it does on a wheel. The pad also limits how much steering input you can use, for example the downhill left hander on this track, Digit says the car goes wider on pad, it’s because the game limits how much lock you can apply. Often it’s not a problem, but occasionally like on this track it genuinely makes it impossible to replicate the lines wheel users take.

      Good comment and 100% agree. Monza T1 is perfect example of this. That is, if we are only talking about tracks. When you bring cars into the mix, well, the faster they are the worse it gets for controller. I can't even bother doing VGT Time Trials for this reason. Whatever car or track combo requires you to do swift and precise turning inputs, the worse it is for controller. Another disadvantage for the controller that is not mentioned here is the lack of precision. A track like Spa with long, constant-radius corners (oh and Eau Rouge btw) rewards you for precise and gentle inputs and you will always have an advantage there with wheel and pedals. I appreciate the video, but RBR, where your laptime is dictated mostly by exit speed from a few slowish corners on to a straight is not an honest comparison.

    PD/Sony did an amazing job with the DualSense and I think it's pretty good for racing. You can actually get really close to top times quicker due to the "background assists" when you drive using a controller (especially in road cars). Wheel does allow for higher ceiling, but it requires a lot more practice, do not assume that you will immediately become faster when you make the switch. I actually dropped from DR A to DR B during my transition from the ctrl to G29. Wheel does have an edge in tire saving races and enjoyment/immersion, but do not write off the DualSense, it is very usable.

      This is true. I was so bad on wheel when I transitioned… but after 2 weeks it was amazing. Controller is great on gt7 compared to other sims (asseto corsa on controller is hot garbage). U just have to be perfect on controller, no room for small adjustments, whereas on a wheel u can make small adjustments much easier.

    After my experience of the controller and the wheel and got some records with them, I think I can tell the difference between them as well. You can compete with the best players on the controller if you master it. Before I switched to the wheel I was a controller player and I got many top 10 records with it when I was very new in the game so they are both fast and almost the same pace in "time trials" in most combos not all, but the problem with the controller is in the race I think it’s very difficult to be consistent and you will struggle a lot with tire wear.

    I'm on controller and have been stuck in B for about 300 races, ive popped into low A a few times but i always fall back down to B --- Your right, recovering from mistakes is really easy on controller, and trail braking is VERY hard. Those 25% breaking points are really hard to consistently hit as well.

      I was in Top B for 1000+ races, maybe it took me this much because i made bad decisions and ended up dropping in SR, but after 1000+ races and being more serious about race craft i was able to get to A and even high A after a couple weeks, it‘s possible

    • @scarfejs_
      @scarfejs_ 3 місяці тому +1

      Disagree, trail braking is doable once you’re used to the controller in general, i look at how much braking is applied vy fast drivers and i am sometimes looking at the input when breaking to nail it, when you are used to the track you no longer need to look at the inputs and can focus on the track and traffic

    • @scarfejs_
      @scarfejs_ 3 місяці тому +3

      Watch the inputs and turning points of the fastest drivers, practice the quali for however long it takes until you think you can’t improve your time, then you should be warmed up enough to be competitive in a race, set yourself the minimum target of top8 to be „within the points“ and a target of top 5 in general and a target of top 3 if everything goes perfect - be happy with the minimum targets like top 5 and if it doesn’t go well keep in mind top 8 is fine - usually with experience you know in quali when you can or can’t find more time
      Have fun

    Controller player here. It's possible to be competitive with a controller - i've managed to achieve A+, it's possible to be quick in any race - with a lot of practice.
    The one thing against is in the longer races (especially in Manufactures/Nations). Don't know if it's only with me, but i feel that the tyre wear is a lot bigger for players with a controller. But, as i said, can be my experience and other players feel the exact opposite.

      You are correct. Tyre wear is worse on a controller. Specifically for the front tyres which, funnily enough, means that MR cars have a bit better tyre wear than on wheel. Because MR cars normally wear the rear tyres more, so combined with controller front tyre wear, makes the tyre wear more balanced.

    its never wheel or controller i see it as personal preference, it is always the skill. when to brake, how to brake, managing throttle during the turn, full throttle on the exit etc... wheel or controller play what you enjoy, but bring the skill in order to be competitive.

    • @hssIceland
      @hssIceland 2 місяці тому

      Never? really? big claim considering you seem to have nothing to back that up except "personal preference". meanwhile most people will recommend Wheels and Pedals over a controller. That's not saying that one is necessarily faster then the other over a single lap. I can however tell you as someone who started off on a wheel and is now on a controller that being consistent over a full race (15 minutes ish or more) takes a lot more effort on a controller then it does on a wheel. I'm not even taking fuel and tire saving in to consideration here which adds another drawback to the controller over longer races. Also the complete lack of force feedback when it comes to determining the grip you have is a big loss on the controller, it's literally taking away one of your senses.
      So you can about "skill" being the main thing but at the end of the day no matter what you say, it takes less "skill" to win a race on a wheel then it does on a controller.

  • @BinderVR
    @BinderVR 3 місяці тому +3

    It's not a fair comparison because you don't use a controller regularly. I've been drive simulators for over 15 years, I've had all kinds of steering wheels, and I've been doing controller vs steering wheel comparisons like this for years. Now I also use a Fanatec DD, with a BMW GT2 and F1 steering wheel, but I also drive a lot with a controller! I have several lists, in various tasks, and according to my experience, there is no significant difference in a simple time trial event, and sometimes you can even get a better time with a controller (if you use it a lot). The advantages of the steering wheel can be felt in long-distance races, you can take better care of the tires and you can stay focused longer and make more constant lap times. 😊

      This would demand you to give up on the wheel setup entirely to do this and then it depends if it takes days or weeks to get used to the motion control and controller and then another period of finding time, seems to be to mich of a hassle, this is good for people who don’t want to or can’t get a wheel setup they have lots of time to get used to the controller and then time to find time to become competitive

    Tip for everyone playing on controller. Go to the settings and turn both the adaptive trigger effect and steering sensitivity to max.
    This will give you more precise inputs.

    • @X_BILSON
      @X_BILSON 3 місяці тому

      The problem with max sensitivity is tire scrubbing. Lack of force feedback means that on sensitivity 10 the understeer is not only slower but increases front tire wear in longer races due to scubbing. To avoid this while keeping the steering as close to 1:1 as possible, then I believe sensitivity should be around 7 or 8 at its highest (generally).

    • @RTR_SLAMMER
      @RTR_SLAMMER 2 місяці тому

      @@X_BILSONare you sure about this? I mean you can also turn like 70-90% on controller instead of 100%.
      I do use highest values because I want the car to follow my inputs as fast as possible.
      To reduce sensitivity this would mean to apply earlier inputs right? So to say that I have to turn in earlier to let the car do the corner?

    This is useful video and i think that Road Atlanta is better comparison between controller and wheel.
    You have first corner which there is no way (at least for me, so yeah lack of skill) that you can carry the speed as top drivers (they carry 300km/h and best i can do is 290).
    And then here come the Esses...if there is someone that can beat top 10 drivers in the world in that sector with controller - congrats. And here you go. First sector and you already behind almost a second.
    I manage to do 1:00.400 with optional best time 1:00.150 but simply cant put fastest sectors into whole lap (you guess - first sector).
    Generally, dual sense is a great and offers those drivers (who dont have wheel) opportunity to be, in best case scenarios and depending on tracks, within a 1 or 1.5 sec. of the best time. Which isnt great but also isnt bad. Everything thats beeing said in this video are correct.

      The small monitor thing is intentional. With a wider monitor, important information is out of your field or view. Also the "wheel turn vs car turn" ratio gets weird. So its not like people never thought about bigger monitors, or they don´t have the money for it, its just not optimal.

And the not in your field of view thing would be corrected by the distance of the rig to the screen right? You will be way further away on a bigger screen. I love racing on my 113 inch screen so realistic with everything being up to size in real life. For example did you know that the track limit line of tracks that exist in real life are up to regulation size and between 10 and 25 cm wide. And that's the point I'm trying to make : every inch counts, but how can you see that inch on a screen that small?

    ►90% of all drivers are faster with the controller... A wheel + setup Costs A lot of money and 90% of the Drivers that have a exspensive wheel are never be that fast because of 1 thing: Not Many people have the ''Detremination'' to go for the TOP. So my advice... just stick with the Controller of 50 Euro if your not Willing to do the effort. ◄◄ Im a Stable DR A driver and i just Drive with X and Square Buttons◄◄ And im faster and More consistent then the majority Drivers with a wheel. Its just reality... People make each other Crazy to buy all those Expensive things but 99% of them can't reach the top 100 with all that Stuff. Just Facts. Thtas my XP and i drove on GT7 Almost 300.000 km. Just my Oppinion Fellas!

      And its legit. It depends what one want to do. Compete or drive for fun. Im satisfied with controller and most of the times im within 1, 1.5 sec. behind top drivers. Sometimes can be a bit annoying (because i love to compete) to see how top drivers abuse track limits and on controller you have to be careful (for example Road Atlanta - the Esses). But other than that, you can still manage to get A or even A+ rank which isnt that bad.

    I find this video completely unnecessary and misleading. It would be better if there were none, because this is exactly how misinformation is created. In this case, something is being compared with which I myself do not have adequate experience. What do I expect from such a test?
    I don't want to say that DualSense is comparable to a professional steering wheel and pedals. That's not the case and everyone knows it even without a video.
    My point is that the conclusions I draw by comparing the equipment I use for hours and hours a day to the one I try for 20 minutes are guaranteed to be inadequate facts.
    If I'm used to driving with a gamepad and I sit behind the wheel with pedals for the first time for twenty minutes, what will happen? I also won't be able to properly evaluate what the steering wheel is like because I don't have enough experience with it.
    Thumbs down for such dilettantism. Share quality, not a cheap crap.

      And you are the guy who misses the streams and later come here criticism the videos for not knowing the context. This is the case once more. Digit made this video cause people asked him to do it several times during the streams. " everyone knows it even without a video", but for some reason, "everyone still keeps asking for a video about it".
      I can understand your misinterpretation of the video objectives for not being a regular streamer viewer, and for always being out of context. But your tone is not acceptable. Please be more aware of this in your next comments, if you want to be considered as a "critic" and not a "hater".

    And Digit got a Top 2000, but I'm sure 30%~50% of the players between Top 1 and Top 2000 are controller players.

    Hello everyone, I play on ds5 from the beggining and from my experience you can get easily to the top A+ lobby and end up in the middle of the pack. The biggest issue from my point of view is
    1. Tyre wear
    2. Slow and tight corners are screwed because with stick it take ages to make car turn and with motion you do not have force feedback so it is easy to spin. So slow corners are the nightmare. Foe exaple on Fuji I am losing about 0.2-0.4s at slow sector.

    I think it is not fair to compare one method of driving, where you have thousands of hours of practice with another method of driving where you have practically zero. I'm sure that with a month of controller only practice, you would get very close to the wheel times. I guess you wouldn't reach it, but the difference would surely shrink from 1.5s to maybe 0.1-0.2s.

    Biggest difference for me is the immersion. Control is cool for like coach potato gaming but nothing beats a good sim setup. Even if your slower on wheel it’s still more satisfying and personally I feel more confident on wheel to use all the track than on control where a small flick can put you over the track limits. You just have much finer control on wheel with just about everything, from steering to throttle inputs. I’m not saying wheel is better or faster it’s really personal preference but once you’ve tried a proper sim rig and get use to it, it’s hard to go back to control.

      @@alexeichikish2221 well yeah but you don’t really need it. It’s really just about personal preference, and whether you have the space/budget. My point is you can still be competitive with control but wheel still has its advantages. There’s also a learning curve to, most people who just start are gonna be slower than their controller times. It still takes practice to be fast on wheel and pedals, unless you’ve had past experience your not just gonna hop on and win every single race.

      @@alexeichikish2221 I think it’s you who doesn’t get it, if your only argument is the feel of it then you should have suggested a DD wheel instead of a crappy cog and gear g27…. Again tho the feel of it isn’t gonna be the biggest factor when choosing between the two. It’s gonna be price, and whether or not you even have the space for a wheel setup cause even if you’re using a desk it’s still gonna take up space. If your getting a wheel tho you probably want a cockpit since your going for immersion over speed/ lap times. Even then it’s still really personal preference cause some people will choose speed over immersion and in some games controller is faster.

    I attest that it is possible to reach the top 100 on DS4... I know someone who does it like this... for my part I am around 200 on a good day although I generally stay at 300-500... let this help so that people do not get confused. discouraged... I have been A+ in control and won 800+ races... now in transition to the wheel it definitely cost me work and time maybe a year but I can say that I am going a little faster and above all more comfortable with the wheel

      yes man, ds4/ps4 I found a possibility to use a ps4 controller on the ps5, it is a brook wingman xe2 adapter and it works very well... for other games ;-C specifically for GT7 it does not work, it sends you an error message compatibility... in any case there is not much difference between a ps4 and a ps5 in terms of gt7. I can assure you that I prefer to play it on the PS4 Pro, I put an SSD in it, it's a little faster
