Is the flagship more like a Milorganite or a Carbon X? My yard loves Milorganite, but doesn’t respond to Carbon X. (KBG, Michigan)

    • @Thelawncarenut
      @Thelawncarenut  3 роки тому

@@shawnregentin It's about 10% Milorganite and the rest is N and K. If your lawn doesn't respond to Flagship for sure you will want to get a soil test and see what is going on - you probably should even get one before you apply anything this season just so see.

I just bought the ECHO RB60 for $111 from Home Depot. I am planning on using Milorganite fertilizer (I have one acre of property) for my lawn this summer. Thank you for the video and breakdown of this product. I just started treating my grass over the last two years and what a difference makes. I started cutting my grass higher (3-3.5 inches in spring and 4 inches during the hot summer). That right there made a HUGE difference. I also had my lawn treated with weed preventer in early spring and then fertilizer in summer, as well as a grub and tick treatment (we have dogs). I had my landscaper use a heavy roller and roll our yard to help flatten the lawn and soil (also crushes the mole tunnels!!). Aeration and overseeding in the late fall and then a winter fertilizer application. My wife said to me the other day, "our lawn looks like a golf course". Even my neighbor has told me how amazing our lawn and grass looks. He wants me to come over to his house and give him some tips LOL.

My take on the RB-60 after using it for an entire season: It’s not perfect but you get what you pay for in the end (I paid $99 for mine). I’ve owned all of the cheap scott’s spreaders and always had issues from the hopper getting locked open to uneven spreading and even fert lines when the product would get locked up in the wheel wells. I now own the Echo and completely agree that there’s issues but they’re easy fixes: Zip ties on the propeller to scoop the fert at the bottom, velcro on the edgeguard as it tends to fall down on occasion and you don’t realize until its too late, and tighten up the spring to prevent the latch from locking open which I’ve had happen several times. After all that’s done, you shouldn’t have any issues, at least I don’t anymore. Watch out with the spreader settings too; they say it’s comparable to Scott’s edgeguard but I found I always have to dial down a setting or two lower to match my old Scott’s edgeguard. Now I have a beefier hopper, even spreading, much farther throw and pneumatic tires that don’t get fert stuck in them. Again, you get what you pay for and for $99, this thing’s a steal.

Excellent Review: I bought Echo last summer and I have been very happy with it. You are right it rolls nicely on St Aug. When I get to the last bit in the hopper I throw a little sand / compost in the hopper and that usually helps dump out the remaining fertilizer.

Same sentiments and I do still love it. I picked it up for $109 free shipping from the PED site. I also modified the agitator with some cabinet shelf brackets that made a huge difference. I still shake but not nearly as frequent and can get much lower in the throw before it’s needed.
For the money it’s a good competitor but all spreaders have their advantages and weaknesses.

It's around this time (End of Janaury thru end of February) I start to get the winter blues. I can deal with Winter from November to December. Thanksgiving and Christmas just don't seem the same without winter, but after that, winter can go away. I start ordering my lawn care stuff around March, so March is an exciting time for me. I'm preparing while I wait for my lawn to come out of dormancy. I have to say, these videos at about this time helps me get excited. Seeing the green and the bright sun. Gets me day dreaming of sitting under my patio cover, on my outdoor furniture, in the backyard, with a whiskey looking at the flower bloom and the green lawn, and Traeger going. Almost there.

Threw down some Flagship today. I love the prill size! (That’s what she said). The fert looks great in the hopper. The prills are small, uniform in size and flow easily. There is a general white, black and blue color to it. The white makes it super easy to see where you’re slinging. Best of all it smells like success.

I've got the Echo RB100S and it's been amazing so far... definitely hammers out the fert. My biggest complaint on that model is the adjustment knob for rate control. Such a bad clamp down design, it moves from time to time if you don't keep an eye on it.. all they need to do is make a locking type design on the different rate settings and it would be fine. Very simple fix on a rather bad design in my opinion.

Paid $111.99 at HD; tried and failed to locate one online or with a dealer at the MSRP. I will be comparing this to my old Edgeguard and last years Earthways purchase (based on your reco); both are two small for my 1+ acre property. I am hoping the spread pattern of the Echo gets the furt out there with less passes. I also think I am going to like the wider container, even though you pointed out the need to bump to keep the flow going. The Earthway was to high and concentrated in a narrow area, which made the spreader hard to control when applying to one 12,500 sf area of lawn that has a 9 foot elevation change. The Echo has been sitting in my garage for three weeks, we are still under snow cover. Thanks for the review, I am feeling better about the decision to give this a try. I will be selling the Earthways (used two times), this would be great for a smaller and flatter yard.

The RB60 worked great - except for the issues you listed in the video. Kind of annoying to have to shake the spreader so much. But, it's built really well, it felt sturdy and the tires are awesome. It definitely throws much further than my old Scott's Standard did. The edge guard worked well too - except I forgot to put it back up after my trim pass just for a few rows. Overall, very good spreader - just need to modify the agitator. The Stress Blend was the first fert to go in it. Went down fast at the 5.5 setting. Smells like Milo but a tad stronger. Looking forward to seeing the iron kick in.

I recently bought a Chapin 70 lb capacity (round tub) spreader for around 150.00. Very stout piece of equipment and it too throws at least 6-8 feet to both sides. It's insane! Actually don't need it to throw that far out. It has two yellow hole drop closures on the bottom to supposedly allow some control over left or right throw pattern. Great idea but they're useless, doesn't change much at all. So, this has caused me to slow down a little while doing my first trim passes so I don't sling product out into a non customers yard or all the way across the street. As you've said so wisely, learn your land/products/tools. I would not buy it again, Like you said, there's no perfect spreader but for me, I'm saving my money for a Lesco or Spyker.

For a 1 acre or less lawn in America I wanna upgrade my Scott's to a Spiker or the Earthway this season based on which one will make a clean 1st pass around the perimeter between those two. Last thing I want is to throw prills into the street or driveway so for me, having a really nice guard is important to get a nice an even green up with little waste. Any recommendations

I actually ordered this (Echo RB60) a few weeks before you did this review. I have a question.
I had an extra nut in the box....i was trying to figure out where it went but to no avail. On the axle, does it only have one bolt & nut on ONLY one wheel? So one wheel turns the machine, while the other free-wheels?
It is not in local stores, so i can't go look at a floor model.

The wheels are nice…it throws really good for large areas. The impeller isn’t perfect…some people add zip ties to get it to reach lower. I find I have to bump/bounce it when less than half full. Also it sucks for lime applications and the door/discs jam (open) a lot so be prepared to keep going or do the coat coat hanger mod (lawncaresuccess) so you can manually close it. You have to rinse the dust out between uses so they don’t jam (they need to fix that or swap to a rod actuator instead of the cheap spring) Honestly I trust my old rusting under the deck scotts cheapy more (throws lime pellets no problem) It does ok with prilled fert…sometimes you might have to bounce it to get it to shut off but not a lot if you hosed/rinsed it after last use. It looks great holds a lot pushes great throws great…but don’t assume it’s really off without checking and avoid using it for dusty pelletized lime apps (unless you do the mod…and even then keep it clean) If they fixed those 2 issues (impellervand shut off discs jamming…read add a lever actuator) they’d have a great spreader even if it went up another $20 allso adding a back tubular bar instead of the two feet would be nicer and more stable when stationary…especially on less than flat turf.

So which do you prefer, the Echo or the Earthway. I have a 2150 which is a beefier, commercial version of the 2600A I think, but it is heavy, especially when it has 45-60 pounds of fert on board. Your thoughts?

I’m looking to downgrade my lesco spreader, picked it up for the low low on marketplace but the swath is way too much for my lawn..
I’m throwin all my fert in the street and my driveway!
Based on what you said, I think the earth way would be a best fit for me with the 3-4 foot spread.
    Thanks!

That slope in the hopper on your prototype is dang near gold standard. The hopper on my Spyker spreader is sloped enough to have to shake it as well, and since it has a longer handle and is slightly heavier so it’s harder to shake it. (That’s what she said)

I agree with you and your Spyker. I have one that is over 10 years old and looks and operates like new. STAINLESS grate in bottom to fend off those mysterious clumps, nice cover in case you get caught out in a sudden FL rainstorm, Yes it was a bit more expensive than the orange machine for 130.00, but the handle is longer too. My neighbor bought one of those orange Echo and took it back after ONE use and bought a Lesco... so to each his own... Great customer service from Spyker too.

For anyone else with this issue, treat the handle that closes the gate like a bow and arrow... You have to let it flick off your fingers so it slams shut. Same method works well on the cheap Scott's spreaders

My Echo trimmer is 15 years old. It hasn't ever failed to start but I do think it's getting time to change the spark plug because it's the original. I run premixed gas.

@@MrErpman So far I've been running the ethanol free "engineered fuel" that's sold at Home Depot/Lowe's. Trimmer always starts on the first pull (after a few pulls on full choke first) which is pretty wild for a 2 stroke. 40:1 oil ratio seems to be best for the full throttle operation it mostly sees while edging.

SHOULD I FERTILIZE NOW??? I’m in Houston Texas and we just had an entire week of snow and freezing which is unheard of and now all of our st. Aug is either dead or super dormant and tons of shrubs and plants dead or burned or something. I’m not sure because I’ve never seen it happen before being from Houston. We were 15 degrees last week and are back up to 70 degrees this week. What should I do??

I got the $30 scotts lil spreader for my 6k sq ft yard. For $30 it does everything I need it to do. With that said, the strip of grass that's between my street and my sidewalk, the spread doesn't cover it well. I mean, it covers 75% of it with one pass, so the second pass is over spreading like 50% of the strip.
