But thanks for reviewing it and talking about it. It means a lot.
From what I saw in the movie, no one was stopping Naru from hunting because she was a woman. Like you said, she froze way too much. Where did you see gendered roles exactly?
Personally I feel like the meaning of the end credit part is they came down for the body and probably gave her a trophy, as they did Glover, and she must have seen it as trade and given them the gun in response.
You know crazy you mention that bro. In Batman vs the Predator the comic book when Batman defeats the Predator and the ships come down, the elder hands him a trophy weapon. And that weapon is the same type as the one she obtained in the prey film. Thus this movie... Is in the DC universe!

It excels in it's simplicity. It was a fun action film without beating me over the head with a narrative. I hope the next movie takes place during the war of the three kingdoms. Lu bu vs predator anyone?
Agreed. I think Max hit the nail on the head when he compared it to Assassin's Creed regarding different time periods. Heck, I would love to see a Predator movie in Feudal Japan, Ancient Rome or Greece, or even further back. Imagine a samurai going toe to toe with a Predator, that would be dope as fuck.
Exactly!! Small and simple with respect for the original concept. Not a full blown action movie like the movies did after predator 2. They just threw away the concept of what the predator is.
I loved it. It wasn't perfect, but I enjoyed it a lot, and restored my faith in the franchise. They teased a sequel in the credits, but I hope the make more movies in different periods of time. Persian empire, etc... That would be amazing.
Nah I don't agree, bland main character who had no real reason for hunting, none of the indians looked like they had any muscle, they all looked like young skinny boys, the Europeans looked more like they lived in the wild than them, the alien saved her life so many times and the fact that she met an alien from space and her first reaction is to kill it was really stupid too, it was meh, alot of bad things, they could of give her a real reason for hunting it instead of, im bad at hunting and I need to be better than everyone at everything
@@petebagwell6666 Sorry you didn't like it. But, people wouldn't be jacked living of the land. People wanting to prove themselves has happened throughout history to this day. My dad had me and my brother on stuff like Aliens, Predator, T2, etc. early on in our childhood (born in 86) and it’s amazing how much those films still stand up to this day. Predator is as amazing as it was back then. It’ll never really become dated because it’s just raw, real and like Max said pretty simple and straightforward
The Feral Predator hunt was the first hunt based on Earth in 1719, but the Samurai abolition wasn't until like 1856 or something like that. So it very well could still happen!
@@2PHOKERS No it wasn't. Yautjas have been hunting on Earth since the dinos were around. People are getting confused, the director of the new movie said that the predator in the movie had never been on earth and that was his first hunt on earth, not the actual Yautja race.
I definitely saw this predator as more of a primitive predator not just with its design but its weapons some were super technologically advanced where others were more primitive like the arrow thing instead of the plasma blaster but still had the spears, cloaking, the net etc I watched it twice once alone then with my father. When he shot the net my dad goes "owee like Cyrax" lol 😆 I think the first film where they used the net was avp if I'm not mistaken maybe pred 2? I forget lol.

6:30 Reminds me of the 2016 Blair Witch movie. It was initially promoted as a completely unrelated horror movie called The Woods until its limited premiere at Comic Con. Then during the showing they swapped out all the promotional material in the venue for versions with the actual title. Unfortunately that was probably the most memorable thing about that movie.
Growing up with the Pred head and loving 1 and 2, i'm finally happy i can round it out as a trilogy with Prey. Its been a long time coming but it actually happened : P
Spoilers, for those who haven't seen the film. . . . I don't think the mother ship hinted at in the post credits was there to take out the Comanche. Given that Naru kept the Predator's head like a trophy, as they do, the other Predators would've respected the Comanche, who would've given the Predators the gun as a peace offering. Also, two stand out scenes that showed how badass and ruthless the Predator was: punching out a grizzly bear and just letting that French fur trader shoot him point blank in the face.
I don't know. If this wasn't the first time predators came to this planet then I would agree. But I think the juvenile predator was there to assess whether planet earth is a worthy hunting ground or not. I agree predators or the yautja if you want to go by their proper name live by their honor code. I dont see why they will come just for revenge, if anything they would be curious to see who brough down one of their own, In predator 2 they did not kill the main charecter, they let him go and gave him a trophy insted.
The predator design was amazing the predator is in a coming of age mirroring off of the native american protagonist which is displayed beautifully. You can tell it was doing its own trials by the fight with animals (the wolf and bear). Im glad this was like the predator actually BECOMING the predator.
Did you just say a sophisticated alien race is “coming of age”… they ruined the entire storyline… I’m sure you have no understanding of why “predators” do what they do… this is a husk of its former self.
It makes sense because this is a Feral Predator, not a Jungle Predator who is always patient to hunt. Feral Pred takes a lot of beating especially when he fought a bear.
I'm glad Max mentions the idea of watching a Predator movie, without knowing it's a Predator movie. Because that's how I experienced the 1987 movie, and that made it like a thousand times better.
The original movie will always have a huge advantage because of the mystery. But it also excellent for several other reasons. The entirely real sets for example. Also the genuine sense of despair, terror, and mental breakdown shown by the cast is just amazing.
As a predator fan, I always thought predators was decent. Like it had such a great concept. People waking up on a random place, no idea how they got there. Similar to the cube. It had so much potential to be amazing. N it had some great parts. But it also felt like it was just missing something. Idk what. I liked the idea. Just needed some work.
First of all.. the cast was crap, just crap. Second.. cheesy lines, so much of them. Concept of the movie is wrong too. The predator hunts its prey in their natural enviroment. Then theres the larger predators.. Ever since those got added to the movies, they became trash. Predators are hunters with honor, not action heroes with a bad attitude.
The fight scene between Naru and the French guys blew my mind. Choreo was breathtaking. Loved the nods, especially to Billy and of course the pistol. Felt like a move forwards while at the same time staying faithful to the source. Absolutely second best to the original.
Prey was a godsend after that last abomination! You can keep it simple when you have a badass, alien hunter. There's no need to over-think things. I was just happy to get a good Predator movie after so long.
Funnily enough, I decided to rewatch the whole Predator franchise available on Disney+ just a week ago without even realizing that there was this new movie tied in with the Predator lore. It is insane how great original Predator still is and I am very excited about Prey, seeing as it's getting such good reviews. I hope they can continue pushing great Predator content as more kids should be aware of just how awesome Predator used to be.
@@jedimastayoda112 Unless it's region-locked, you should be able to find it. My Disney+ has both the Predator franchise AND the Alien movies available.
What I love about the movie is that they brought character back for the predator. I feel like the predators were devolving into generic movie monsters after the second movie slowly but surely, until we got “the predator” which was just insulting. Here is a wonderful return to form with a predator that has unique characterizations, a good new design, and tons of awesome gear to help him stand out from the best.
I don’t know if anybody noticed but in the movie Prey they used an Arnie quote which I thought was interesting, “if it bleeds than we can kill it”. It made me kind of chuckle because that quote usually get made fun of.
I absolutely absolutely love Predator 2 it was brutal and original lol I still don't understand why people don't like it and the biggest reason why it's so important is because without the ending of the movie showing the trophy room we never would have gotten Alien vs Predator and Prey was outstanding

Amber was absolutely amazing. The pressure of having to carry the film plus revive a legendary highly criticized franchise must have been gigantic and she's delivers. I never thought I'd ever say this about a Predator film but Oscar nod for lead actress???

Thanks for the spoiler warning Max, sorry I had to stop the video right there, but I gotta see this, I'll watch the rest of the video when I'm done. EDIT: Just finished watching it. HOLY SHIT, I never expected John Wick levels of choreography on a Predator movie set in the 1700's. The moment I saw the european men, I immediately thought "wait, is this how the Predator 2 gun came to be?" and sure enough, it does and I love that they actually use the damn gun in a badass way. More of this please, short, simple and badass.
I don't think the predators destroyed the village I think they just came to retrieve the dead predators body and maybe she gave the gun as a sign of respect and they gave her a item too.
Max, as a fellow Predator nerd, I would highly recommend you read the trilogy The Rage War Trilogy by Tim Lebbon. First book is predator incursion. 2nd is Alien Invasion and finally Alien Vs Predator Armageddon. Making him one of the few authors that wrote for both franchises. It’s a novel only story and it’s pretty awesome. Would be cool to hear what a fellow fan thinks
Just watched it and loved it. Loved your review. Want to point out that this version of Predator was quite balanced since it was losing to a bear in terms of physical strength. The bear basically beat the shit out of him and then Predator had to use different methods to take out the bear. We also saw how predator had trouble going up against the Tribal Hunters since they were so agile and their movement was quick. Even the brother dodged a lot of Predator's attacks. Same things can be seen when it just doesn't know what to do against some scenarios and stays still. Shows a lack of experience of hunting on earth.
I really enjoyed the movie but people are right its not amazing. Its an echoed opinion at this point but even though I still liked the characters it felt like there was a barrier between them and the audience unlike the ones from the 1987 movie. I think prey stands on its own as a pretty good popcorn flick but I don't think its a truly great movie like the first. I feel like it should've developed the characters more if not just make it the focused on the brother and sister. I know that's not the kind of movie or story it was trying to tell, although I do usually like getting more out of a storys characters.
What I love about it is that with this we finally get a decent "Predator Trilogy" I am not a fan of the Predator look, the orignal in Predator is by far the best... I mean, the freaking face of the Yautja in that face is still freaking amazing... and how it clicks one of it's "fangs" when "thinking/analizing" situations... unmatched 🙌🙌🙌 That said, the kills and arsenal in this movie are incredible! It shows they are having fun with the creature.
interesting fact: there was a predator comic where a predator is hunting pirates (ships, caribean and all that stuff). and there was a pirate so badass that was fighting everyone else alone and the predator deemed him worthy and they were fighting side by side together. and at the end the predator is given the gun from predator 2 as the pirate dies in his hands, pirate saying "take it" just like the pred in predator 2. that was a very good story and highly recommend reading it, kinda sad they changed that in the movies but it was nice though
It's a solid 8/10 for sure, it's in my top 3 predator films with Predator and Predator 2, and those can move around easily as my favorites in that top 3 spot, Predator will always be the best [well, up to now] but P2 and Prey could swap back and forth easily.
Max may have missed this period in time, but the Predator and Alien universes as well as the Weyland timeline ARE all connected now and are cannonical to one another. The gun he mentions that appears both in this film and in Predator 2 was actually given lore after Predator 2 was made. Basically, that gun came from a PIRATE who also encountered and managed to kill a Predator and was passed down to the person that wound up yielding the gun to the Comanche woman in this film. Somewhere along the line, this woman either gets killed by or yields the gun to the Predators and they keep it as a relic and testament to humanity's potential as dangerous, worthy prey and eventually makes its way to Predator 2. When Glover is given the gun at the end of that film, it is basically a badge of honor; the Yautja telling him that he is, himself, considered a "Predator". Among their race, there are several different marks for someone's competency. For a Predator, killing a Xenomorph is considered part of their ritual of becoming a "man" as Xenomorphs were specifically created and fostered as dangerous prey for their kind to hunt. For a Human to kill a Xenomorph, that is considered a feat that would put them on par with a Predator. For a Human to kill a Predator though? That is almost legendary. See, Predators actually have the technology to just dispose of Alien and Human kind at will if they wanted to, they're just not about that. They are about the hunt and sport of their kills and preserve both species respectfully. Humans, ironically, are actually considered more dangerous than Xenomorphs as they are the offspring of the Promethians who the Yautja warred with. The Yautja, therefore, are wholly cautious about humanity given who their forebearers were. After all, it was the Promethians that created the Xenomorphs and the Xenomorphs were created using biological weaponry used to eradicate life on other planets so that they could be conquered. So when a Predator sees a Human being, it is like looking at a young, unproven bear cub. Sure, it's cute and placated now, but it has the potential to grow into a ravenous, territorial Grizzly if left unchecked.
If there is ever another Prey/Predator movie that takes place in the past, I would hope that it would be set in Feudal Japan with the aesthetics of a Kurosawa film. Imagine the entire movie being black and white, but one of the only sources of color in the film would be the Predator itself. That would be sick!
I thought it was okay. Kind of tired of people saying it’s better than the last couple of movies because that is obviously such a low bar and it’s no achievement to supersede those movies.
As a massive Predator/Yautja fan this movie was exactly what I wanted. While I hope they don't make a sequel to Prey, I would love to see a Yautja rampage through different time periods. My dream is still an AvP movie based off of the original comic books with Machiko Noguchi and Broken Tusk.
I also liked how the Predator had rules He only used his stabby claws for the snake, wolf, lion and bear When people started shooting arrows at him he used his arrow launcher When he got attacked with spears he busted out his spear When the French trappers netted him he used nets Once the gunpowder muskets were out he had his little shield and was just sick of everyone and bombed the place.
I noticed that too! And he clearly found the trapping to be contemptible and weak. By that point he's already decided Naru is worthy prey, but he refused to hurt her while trapped. And then against the trappers he put his really badass weapons aside and is killing them with their own traps. He was arrogant but also had clear rules and motivations.
@@NeoZurg yup, it played into him being juvenile and inexperienced. The 80s Predator would've gone full hand to hand with them like it did Dutch and Billy
@@mercerholt8299 It was a nice nod to the original movie too. In Predator, the predator scouts the team and ends up killing most of them in a way that parallels their personality or actions somehow.
My favorite part of the film was Taabe going dumb on the Predator. Dude was whooping it's ass lol. Made it cloak vanish. Taabe was a legit badass. It's crazy how damaged Predator was by the time he 1v1 Naru. Yea Naru had some injuries. But Predator was biggity beat. A bear almost kills it. The tribe members getting some licks in. The wolf getting a bite out of it. The French guys getting some shots it. Taabe kicking it's ass and getting some nice stabs and arrow shots in. A point blank gun shot to the head. Like damn, Predator was resilient as hell. But Naru definitely took advantage of that, combined with she was a pretty smart character in general.
It's ridiculous how some people having issues about a girl beating a predator Strength-wise, it make little difference for the predators between a girl and a grown man Like it wouldn't matter for a 200 lbs man, whether he's fighting a 10-year-old girl or a 10-year-old boy
It's true, despite Arnold's size in the first movie, he never over powered the Predator. Defeating the Predator as a human is all about tactics, not strength.
@@ZeroShaneBob This exactly. People forget that the Predator picked Dutch up with one hand, slapped him several times, and took off all his armor so he could toy with Dutch. The only way a human can defeat a predator is with a plan and a lot of luck. In the comics, the Predators explicitly state the only reason that humans are worthy prey is their intelligence.
I loved it so much too. It brought us back to basics. Which is what we need. It could be it’s own genre. I rewatched it two more times already. The main character Naru is so beautiful. But I totally believed her to be this warrior with something to prove. It’s a shame we can’t see her as this character again but I’m sure we will see her is so many other things. Especially now. I would like her to be in some sort of assassin movie. Where she is this awesome agent.
I've been seeing some youtubers being wet blankets about this movie and just nitpicking the crap out of it for views just because its popular. So it's refreshing to see Max just gushing over it instead of going that route cause this film was amazing and deserves all the praise its been getting. I agree, my personal ratings are: Predator (1) is easy 10/10. Predator 2 is an 8.5. Predators is 7. The Predator is a 2.5 Prey is a strong 8. I think the franchise should stay in the past or go to the future/outer space. A. There are cooler stories of Predators or Yautja throughout history like Feudal Japan, The Viking era, Egypt, etc. You can explore all those eras and how each Yautja kind of developed different weapons, fighting, and hunting styles around the culture of their prey. B. Yautja society and hierarchy are fascinating, with all the different clans, the Bad Bloods (predators who do not abide by the code of honor), the law bringers that hunt them, or the fact that the Yautja are a female ruled society with the Matriarch who controls everything on Yautja Prime while each of the clans have different Elders or Ancients who run their tribe off world. The females of the species being bigger and stronger than the males actually have mating hunts were the strongest male to win or just survive is taken as a mate. And even the fact that rarely when a human proves themselves through acts of pure bravery and skills can be marked as Blooded and adopted basically by a clan. Could explain how that gun ended up back in Yautja hands....
Prey was a masterpiece. Love the story, setting, atmosphere, cinematography, stunts, sound design, cast, music. It just flowed so well. Absolutely love it
@Potato Power Alright, will explain/ elaborate my thoughts extensively. Prey presented a unique idea with the series, with characters you can connect to, and understand their journey. The world building is amazing, atmosphere is moody, dark, colorful, and changes as the film goes on. The Predator in this tale is a young hunter, observant, a hunter who watches its surroundings. The cast, and characters are excellent, from tribe, to hunters, and the Predator itself. Everyone brought something amazing to the film. The story is a prequel, set in the past, but is connected to later stories within the series. The music wraps you with its sound, and energy that flows with the characters, tension, and action sequences. It opens up many possibilities for the series to grow. A must see.
I thought the last fight against the Predator in this film was to short. One other little detail that rubbed me the wrong way is that the predator doesn't seem to be affected by it's missing helmet and you don't experience his POV without him wearing it... So they always did this

Loved the movie. Would like a direct sequel, or more spinoff stories like this one. Keep them simple and small and respect the concept. That's it.
Exactly!!
Small and simple with respect for the original concept.
Not a full blown action movie like the movies did after predator 2.
They just threw away the concept of what the predator is.

I’d love to see a Japanese predator. A bunch of various samurai and warriors up against an even more ancient and primal predator.
Same here, that actually sounds genius!
The Feral Predator hunt was the first hunt based on Earth in 1719, but the Samurai abolition wasn't until like 1856 or something like that. So it very well could still happen!

No it wasn't. Yautjas have been hunting on Earth since the dinos were around. People are getting confused, the director of the new movie said that the predator in the movie had never been on earth and that was his first hunt on earth, not the actual Yautja race.
I like that the Predator was really melee and brawl oriented, even his tech enhanced that.
Yooo yes! That's what I was reminded of too with the net! Totally a Cyrax fatality lol
Avp did do the metal death net first, one of the best things from that movie I suppose.
I think it was predator 2 that used the net first.
Predator 2 used the net 1st
No, the net was featured in predator 2.

Oh snap! Seriously?? That's is so awesome!!!
They could do a film where the Predator is the protagonist, on an alien planet (not xenomorph). Doesn't always have to be Earth-centric.
That might work in animation. A practical film would be wierd.
This was the perfect storm of great idea meets great execution. My only wish was that it was longer.
Longer? It would be way better shorter. I would cut out first 50 mintues since nothing happens there.

And his death confirms it so now the rest of the predators were coming down eagerly to now do a proper hunt.
they would mark Naru as a warrior. Coz she defeated one of their own. Not for massacre. They never ever kill mass.
I agree predators or the yautja if you want to go by their proper name live by their honor code.
I dont see why they will come just for revenge, if anything they would be curious to see who brough down one of their own,
In predator 2 they did not kill the main charecter, they let him go and gave him a trophy insted.
The kills in this movie were pretty cool, I remember having an audible reaction to the shield kill and the net kill
The one where he cut that guy's legs off before sticking him to that log got a reaction out of me
The Bear Trap kill was my favorite. The way the predator threw it gave me Scorpions "GET OVER HERE" vibes lol
I wish we could have seen it in theaters.

Good job in diversifying your content. I would like to see more film reviews or even just a discussion. Even TV shows if you feel like doing it.
And they do what they do to impress the females of their species… the best “predators” get the mates.
His design as a whole was great. But his face design sucked.

Finally a good modern Predator movie! not as good as the original but easily better than everything that's come out after Predator 2
as soon as I finished watching Prey I was looking forward to your opinion on the film, so glad you uploaded your thoughts.
Morpheus dragged the movie down, it was supposed to be Dutch but Arnold didn't want to come back
Yeah it kind of just ends. And sequel hooks for a movie we will never see.
Yeah it felt like an executive got their fingers in it and dumbed it down
First of all.. the cast was crap, just crap.
Second.. cheesy lines, so much of them.
Concept of the movie is wrong too.
The predator hunts its prey in their natural enviroment.
Then theres the larger predators..
Ever since those got added to the movies, they became trash.
Predators are hunters with honor, not action heroes with a bad attitude.

The moment I saw the european men, I immediately thought "wait, is this how the Predator 2 gun came to be?" and sure enough, it does and I love that they actually use the damn gun in a badass way. More of this please, short, simple and badass.
Would have liked to hear your thoughts on the lead actress. I for one cannot wait to see where her acting career goes.
Fun Fact: Amber Midthunder (who played Naru) is the daughter of David Midthunder who was the face model of Nightwolf from Mortal Kombat 11
I'm so sad that this movie isn't released in theatres.
Prey was absolutely a movie that came out in 2022, my favourite scene was when morgan yu says “it’s time to prey”
I love the idea of doing future predator projects taking place during different time periods
What I love about it is that with this we finally get a decent "Predator Trilogy"
I am not a fan of the Predator look, the orignal in Predator is by far the best...
10:17 Holy shit I need a Predator movie with pirates.

It's a solid 8/10 for sure, it's in my top 3 predator films with Predator and Predator 2, and those can move around easily as my favorites in that top 3 spot, Predator will always be the best [well, up to now] but P2 and Prey could swap back and forth easily.
yo we here for max expanding the brand lets gooooooo git all the content
Max describing how a comic had the first mixing of Predator and Native American culture
Billy: "Am I a joke to you?"
That would be sick!
or his blood!

Hope you talk about movies more Max! Your love for the classics just oozes through all you do!
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
They could just make it a series that's not directly connected (prey from different time n places
Below average movie that is praised to the heavens because it’s competition is literal garbage making it look citizen Kane in comparison.
For Max's question on what the time line is it goes, Predator, Predator 2, Predators, The predator, Prey. All these are cannon one timeline.
I also liked how the Predator had rules
He only used his stabby claws for the snake, wolf, lion and bear
When people started shooting arrows at him he used his arrow launcher
When he got attacked with spears he busted out his spear
When the French trappers netted him he used nets
Once the gunpowder muskets were out he had his little shield and was just sick of everyone and bombed the place.
Huh that's a neat detail I didn't notice.
Yet he broke his own rules when he got outfought by Taabe and turned invisible instead of standing toe to toe with him
@@NeoZurg yup, it played into him being juvenile and inexperienced. The 80s Predator would've gone full hand to hand with them like it did Dutch and Billy
@@mercerholt8299 It was a nice nod to the original movie too. In Predator, the predator scouts the team and ends up killing most of them in a way that parallels their personality or actions somehow.
We need a Predator movie in feudal Japan where Samurai and Shinobi team up to try and kill it.
Kinda poetic that amazing sequel to Predator is “Prey”
That's a good point, and is really fitting the more I think about it lol
I wasn't expecting a review on this.
When they announced the year setting of the film, I knew right away that it will have a connection to Predator 2!
It's just really nice to have a good Predator movie again
My personal opinion: Predator > Predator 2 > Predators > Prey > The Predator.
Even though I've already seen it I'd pay to see this theatrically if they released it. Hey - if they can get Morbius back in the cinema...!
The dog Surii is actually a rescue from Fulton county animal shelter in Georgia! I believe her name is Coco? Super heartwarming
It's ridiculous how some people having issues about a girl beating a predator
Strength-wise, it make little difference for the predators between a girl and a grown man
Like it wouldn't matter for a 200 lbs man, whether he's fighting a 10-year-old girl or a 10-year-old boy
I've heard from a friend that watching it in the Comanche dub makes it feel way more authentic and is just an even cooler experience

I love that it is getting good reviews. Ofc there are alot of haters, but that is just the lame world we live in. I am huge fan of Predator and glad that they are finally going in the right direction. This is by far the best sequel imo, and hopefully they make more
I agree, my personal ratings are:
Predator (1) is easy 10/10.
Predator 2 is an 8.5.
Predators is 7.
The Predator is a 2.5
Prey is a strong 8.

A must see.
@Potato Power too long did not read, conversation done. Your opinion is yours move on
I thought the last fight against the Predator in this film was to short.
One other little detail that rubbed me the wrong way is that the predator doesn't seem to be affected by it's missing helmet and you don't experience his POV without him wearing it... Would've been a good to have that callback but y'know budget i suppose.
