So because it's an animated videogame adaptation here in Mexico it wasn't as widely available in english so I watched it in Spanish, the entire cast was amazing here AND they also got Charles to play as one of his characters from the english version, while some of his other roles were instead done by the people who dubbed Mario and Luigi in the 1993 movie, which was really freaking cool
Saw it with my 3 boys on opening night and we all loved it. They got a ton of references and the music was just AMAZING. It is such a love letter to mario.
I know exactly how he felt when describing the feeling he had watching it. I just finished watching the movie myself and almost immediately when the 8-bit Mario and Luigi come on screen and bump the "?" Block and you see the Nintendo logo pop up I got a little emotional thinking "This actually happened...a Super Mario Bros. movie where Nintendo was largely involved"! I went in expecting to like it simply because it's a franchise I've adored since childhood and came out loving it because of how well it was done and how closely it followed the source material.
I honestly enjoyed it. The story is simple but considering it's the first Mario let alone Nintendo film under Illumination it makes sense they'd want to play it safe. Luigi being the one rescued instead of Peach makes sense considering if a sibling of your is in danger then you'll most likely save them. By a sequel that's when Peach getting captured instead of Luigi will makes sense considering by then the Mario and Peach relationship should be pushed out and been a thing for a while. Bowser,Donkey Kong and Luigi honestly were my favorite parts. I honestly felt like I was nerding out about the references and music most made me go oh my gosh they did it. If this is what future films based off Nintendo games are like then absolutely count me in. I loved it from beginning to end 8.5/10
Mario as a series has always had a thin dark undercurrent running throughout, mostly fan interpretation, but nightmare fuel was always there in some form. It was a relief when I saw they were letting it make itself apparent, as it was a sign the people handling it were reasonably tapped into the games.
I really liked it too, was really fun and had many cool references to many games, like the baby Mario&Luigi showing up. Also the message of "never giving up" is pretty fitting, because that's what we do in a Mario game, we don't give up until we beat it. Pretty cool, not deep or anything, but it didn't need to be Also Jack Black and Anya Taylor Joy KILLED IT. Bowser everyone was expecting to be good, but Peach left me really surprised. She brought so much characterisation to the her, was really cool
Honestly, the movie aside seeing you experience Mario 64 for the first time was a treat to watch especially with the fails making a funny compilation. If anything you should upload that on youtube so more people can watch it. As for the movie, I haven't seen it yet but I know that the movie is full of references from the Mario games which is especially for those who grew up wether with the 2D or 3D Mario era and the party games.
Kamek, my favorite mario character, was one of my favorites from it. I was squinting my eyes trying to see if his magic F/X's had the triangles and circles from the games.
Just came back from watching it. It was way better than I expected. Clearly made with western sensibilities in mind, but not misrepresenting the characters. Just a fun, well made, very beautiful looking movie. No messages, no agendas, no bullshit. Very fun, had nice references, great soundtrack. Everything about it is super carefully made with a light attitude. My kids loved it and the whole cinema applauded in the end. Awesome feeling from beggining to end.
Mega Man flows in my veins. If they could make a movie that matches the level of fun, effort and love that Nintendo and Illumination put into this, I could die a happy man.
We got a workable, enjoyable pair of Sonics. We got a honestly pretty damn good Mario. If we can get a Mega Man that doesn't flop, I would consider my bucket list complete.
@@TheRolo143 Neither is Sonic. It isn't just Nintendo. Capcom could put a movie out there. They've got some live action shame of their own to make up for. (Though they got lucky Raul Julia was phenomenal.)
I grew up on Super Mario, and my 4 boys are growing up on it too, two of my sons had been counting down the days until the release date since sometime in 2022. Needless to say, this movie absolutely didn’t disappoint. We were all laughing throughout the movie and the nostalgia wave was real. First time in a long time that I’ve felt like a kid again.
Just saw the movie today. Man, this is probably how it felt when kids saw the first TMNT in theaters. My eyes were glued to the screen. Very fun movie, it's absolutely worth your time if you're on the fence.
I loved that they addressed the heavy Italian accents right off the bat, and show that Chris Pratt could have done it for the whole movie, but they went for a more realistic Brooklyn one, even having Charles Martinet do it to show that we should get over it.
I just saw it today. I went in excited not expecting much depth just pure visual treat and fan service. It surpassed my expectations. I loved the action and the relationship between Mario and Luigi as well as their backstory was heartwarming to me. I heard Peach was gonna be a girlboss but... yeah she was though but also had a sensitive side to her and overall was more likeable than I expected. What this movie did really great was implementing tons of fan service while making it feel completely organic. I never thought that I would ever see a Mario Movie in cinema that manages to be that unapologetic about it's source material and be entertaining at the same time... And yeah, a Mega Man Movie with that sort of polish and love would absolutely blow me away.
Finally got to see it and I don't blame Bowser for wanting the Princess! We're at a great time where GOOD video game movies are possible! Sonic & Mario doing fantastic in theaters?! Who knew?!
I left my brain at the door as I knew exactly what I was walking into and I had a lot of fun. The voices didn't bother me, I'm actually glad they didn't do the traditional voices for the entire film. Chris Pratt and Charlie Day did a good job at putting their own spin while also playing homage to Mario and Luigi's voices in certain big scenes.
As a Mario Fan, who found mario and has loved him since the 64, I LOVED IT. The only thing that actually surprised me about this movie (not a spoiler), but there was a point in the movie where Mario and Luigi took off there gloves. Not a gripe, it just surprised me to see Mario's hands. Easy 10/10 movie, and i will be seeing it again.
Once i saw that Miyamoto-san was involved in the creation of this film i had no doubts it would be amazing. even tho the studio was the minions studio they do a great job with the animation Miyamoto-san would NEVER allow a shitty Mario movie. NEVER.
My only gripe with the movie is that they made Peach a little too good at everything. I thought the scene where she told Mario she didn't do the obstacle course on first try seemed like such a good way to humanize her, but then she said she just lied to cheer him up. Other than that I enjoyed it. Jack Black's Bowser is a treat.
Yeah they should have just left it at that when she said what she said instead of having her take it back and say she lied. However she wasn't flawless as she would have gotten all of the prisoners killed had it not been for Mario and Dk coming to save them and she also genuinely needed his help to secure the Kong alliance as well.
@@mirotrevino9662 yeah the trailer made it seem like she was a Mary Sue but then the movie made it clear "Yeah of course she's better at existing in the world, because she's been existing in the world most her life! but she's not flawless and they both need each other's help"
My issue was moreover Mario's training montage essentially starting and stopping with that and thereafter being practically an expert. For Peach I felt they balanced it with her having to surrender in the end but yeah potentially could've had more nuanced scenes to develop her team dynamic.
Chris Pratt and everyone else sounded great! Just like Ben Schwartz as Sonic and Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu 😂 But seriously though, we now have the movie world voices and we'll always have the video game world voices. Let's enjoy both!
this movie was enjoyable. just like the Sonic movies. Jack Black was fantastic. hope he gets an award for his performance. the critics overblew it. the animation was incredible and the original music was fantastic.
I hope this movie just further helps showcase why critics are unreliable, untrustworthy, miserable, and utterly biased. I'm LONGING for the day they become irrelevant and the vast majority cease to exist because they're nothing but a plague.
Thank you Max. I want to see it now. You are the voice of reason. Calm and collected. Everyone else i feel was expecting some deep story about a plumber who jumps on turtles..
I saw it with my 6 year old and she loved it. I'm 40 and got all the references. Fun time. When Max said Mega Man movie my eyes lit up, that would be amazing. It could be in the same tone as the Mario movie. Seems like Metroid and Zelda might need a little more serious tone.
They definitely did a great job and I was so happy with the references and nostalgia it brought back. They made the smart move by releasing it on Easter Break since kids are out and there was no other competition for it on its opening weekend. the end credits were great as well.
Imagine, we could get DK Country, Zelda, Metroid and Starfox (btw. that would be frickin awesome) Movies and then all this stuff leads to a giant crossover called… SMASH BROS.
Nintendo could absolutely pull a Marvel Avengers and make Smash Bros an actual thing in the cinema, which would be freaking incredible. As for the story, well they could either do some sort of tournament, which I can't help but feel would be very difficult and a tad bit difficult, or what I think would be better is do something very similar to what Brawl did with the Subspace Emissary. If they can create a dope story mode along with badass CGI cutscenes and absolutely zero dialog, then they could totally make this work. Of course you've got to set up each individual franchise and give them their own movie first though, then you can start crossing them over.
I also loved the movie while going in with low expectations. Idk what the reviewers that gave it such a low score expected from a mario movie, but I definitely know what you mean about it bringing a tear to my eye how far video games have come, I had the exact same reaction.
Nintendo leads all their CGi movies into SSB movie where Master Hand and Crazy Hand tear the fabric of space-time open to get Nintendo's MCs to fight off a couple of SSB bosses to save the universe or something. I could see Nintendo trying to pull that off.
Same, and I think it is because Max is right. Video games finally did it. This little hobby of ours that has been so niche since it began is being shared with the world and accepted on a much grander scale. My mom, who our family has been a little distant with over the years, knows how much I grew up loving Mario. She heard we went and saw this movie and had a great time, and bought me (a 38 year-old dad) a mario kart toy she saw while passing by a Target. I'm not going to lie, I cried.
Totally agreed, when I saw the trailers I was mildly worried about Chris and Seth not sounding like the characters but listening to it while it happens I wasn’t taken out of it
The only negative I've seen is apparently there's some music that was cut from the film in place of generic music like 'Take On Me' and I think somone said 'Back In Black'. I look forward to seeing it still.
I'll be honest, is it really so bad to expect people to know the Mario setting? Why is it bad for The Mario Movie to expect you to know what Mario is, but no one complains that the D&D movie expects you to recognize a gelatinous cube?
I got emotional when watching the movie. It was just that good from a video game fan’s point of view. And I’m not a huge Mario fan, I just grew up in the 80s and 90s with Mario and video games. My wife who isn’t into video games absolutely loved it. Great review there Max. Fully agree with your points.
You have the same reaction as me a super fan of the franchise! This was the perfect foundation for more nintendo films in the Nintendo Cinematic Universe 😊😉🍿
The people saying "Charles Martinet should have played Mario" are grossly overestimating how tolerable the traditional Mario voice is. Mario is one of my favorite Nintendo series, and his voice is iconic, but I would not want to hear the "wahoo! Let's-a go!" delivery for 90 minutes
Then get an actor from Italy with a normal Italian accented voice who speaks English, it would've been really good, not dull and flat voiced chris prat...
And you are grossly underestimating Charles Martinet's range and ability as a voice actor if you think all he's capable of is, "Weehee! Waahaa!" He's incredibly talented, and perfectly capable of adjusting his tone to match a scene. The cast was selected from a pool of people beyond a certain level of status and name recognition. How well they fit into the role was a concern secondary to that. (I'm not saying they all did a terrible job or anything, but this could've been just as good or better with a different cast. There's a lot of extremely talented people in the world that you or I have never heard of that could've auditioned their way into these roles.)
The only real problem with the film was it’s pacing. Other than that while it’s a dumb fun movie feel like this is one of the good ones. Pretty much captures what it’s like to play the games.
Considering this is the first Illumination Nintendo film they most likely played it safe and future Illumination Nintendo films will likely have more stuff in it. If if was a packed film with like 1000s of Mario characters it probably would feel too crowded for a 96 minute long film
@@JacksonLane02 eh true. It really did feel like they were playing it safe once again cause when I watched the trailer I thought the film was finally gonna be illumination branching out. In a way they kinda did especially with the animation lol. Overall it was pretty decent. Just the pacing could’ve been better
Once they got to the Mushroom Kingdom, the movie started moving at mach speed. It was just "go go go", trying to fit as many set pieces, references, and facets of the Mario world in as possible. There's never a real moment for characters to just talk and bond in a genuine way. The closest we get is Peach explaining how she doesn't know where she came from and can only remember the Mushroom Kingdom, but that lasts for like a minute or 2 and it never went anywhere. The characters with the best chemistry was Mario and Luigi, but they were separated for most of the film.
@@JacksonLane02 playing it safe with the amount of characters and ther interactions doesn’t need to make the pacing disorienting and the script basic. they can play it safe while still telling an actual story.
yo i'm a hardcore mario fan, I have mario stuff like a door matt, mugs, amiibo, a displate on the wall. Also a donkey kong plush on my couch. As a 7y/8y old I WANTED TO BE Mario. I was probably the weirdest kid on the playground, acting like mario and punching the air and jumping around, after I had played super mario 64. now i'm in my early/mid 30s and I can't put into words how much i loved this movie. basically every second of it. I watched it with a friend during first week and I just had to go a second time alone, a couple of days later, because I could not think about anything else, after listening to the OST for 2 days straight at work. I find it great to hear from you, Max, that you enjoyed it so much, despite not being a hardcore mario fan! for me it was very emotional to see all these characters on screen, in a movie that doesn't suck. Now 3 days later after seeing it a second time, I still think about this movie a lot and about all the funny scenes and how they incorperated so many facets of the games. I might have to watch it a third time in cinemas lol
I actually just saw It today, and I gotta say being able to recognize every reference, musical motif, and "background" character made this movie a very biased 10/10 for me. Instant top 3 for me, loved the entire thing from start to finish.
I would love a megaman movie with a family feel. The first half is spent with the original 8 masters being brothers to rock and roll till wily twists them and rock decides to be the fighter and that he has to do this not because theyre robots like him but because they are his family and he needs to bring them home (also setting up for a familial conflict with protoman later on the line)
I had so much fun watching the movie! It was so hard to stay quiet. It was like a Mario party (pun not intended). Really packed with charm and creativity. That final showdown was just so awesome too! And I gotta say it. Peach in her biker outfit was something.
I really got emotional through the whole movie. Seeing Mario and Luigi on the big screen with those perfect visuals was such an impact, man... I never thought we would get that.
i came up with a mathematical formula to rate the movie: I counted as many references as I could and then divided that number by 10 for my rating. I ended up counting 121 references in the movie, which means yes, the movie is a 12 out of 10
I laughed and smiled throughout the film! Dunno what people were expecting plot wise? Some grandiose Shakespearean epic tale of Peter Jackson proportions?
I don’t know how you would do a Zelda or Metroid when the protagonists of each game are silent or mostly silent and still make them compelling in a movie form.
They will have to make them speak. Link will likely be stoic and resolute but have more talking since it makes sense for a movie and the same will be done with Samus in a Metroid movie. I just hope that Aounuma is the executive producer on the Zelda film and not Miyamoto as I think he has a better grasp of what fans want out of Zelda nowadays and Miyamoto might try to have them focus too much on making the film a visual spectacle again which wouldn't work for LoZ IMO

That's awesome!
Hey maybe you could do some kind of video showing that!
I was not expecting Peach to be such a badass and I loved it
They made her too good imo. Like she was the only one who didn't struggle to do anything.
She basically solos everyone
I enjoy it the movie 🍿🎥
9.3/10 For me, I Smiled the entire way The Sonic movie Finally has a Rival.
Yup, I see Peach getting captured in the sequel
You get it… You actually get it!!
Agreed most definitely.
Pretty cool, not deep or anything, but it didn't need to be
Also Jack Black and Anya Taylor Joy KILLED IT. Bowser everyone was expecting to be good, but Peach left me really surprised. She brought so much characterisation to the her, was really cool
I loved it!!! They all did amazing and the story was so good! Nostalgic. Hopefully they do more!
I can almost guarantee you that one or more of the compilation editors are already hard at work on a Hype & Rage video.
The “peaches” interlude. Omg I was laughing so hard.
Kamek, my favorite mario character, was one of my favorites from it.
I was squinting my eyes trying to see if his magic F/X's had the triangles and circles from the games.
Oh, it is there in some scenes.
Three words: Kamek in drag.
@@NopeNaw Somehow I didn’t see it coming, and that made it all the funnier.
Kamek is 100% releasing Bowser
@@NopeNaw awesome reference to the new super mario bros wii final boss
The thing is Mega Man is not a Nintendo character, is a Capcom character.
@@TheRolo143 Neither is Sonic.
It isn't just Nintendo. Capcom could put a movie out there. They've got some live action shame of their own to make up for. (Though they got lucky Raul Julia was phenomenal.)
@@trident042 There is literally a Resident Evil film coming up called Death Island
I feel like megaman needs a redesign that isnt clunky looking tbh. I like megaman x but his feet big as FUCK. 😂
My local theater had a special fan event for the movie. Midnight showing, costume contest, and two hours of Mario Kart.
Best. Cinema experience. Ever.
Jealous af tbh
This movie was a love letter to super Mario fans everywhere. I loved all the references and Easter eggs. I will be watching this again
I do like that you used Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix during this. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Destruction Dance is such a fucking good song
I loved that they addressed the heavy Italian accents right off the bat, and show that Chris Pratt could have done it for the whole movie, but they went for a more realistic Brooklyn one, even having Charles Martinet do it to show that we should get over it.
its a kids movie, but that first 15min is for the adults. the commercial, punch-out pizzaria, the wrecking crew construction guy... loved it
Just came back from seeing it. Honestly...it was everything I expected, which is a major positive considering some other films I've seen.
Agreed most definitely.
Who knew?!
Peach, you're so cool.
@@priestesslucy And with my star, we're gonna rule.
Graphics were insane in this movie. And Jack Black as Bowser. Peaches Peaches Peaches 🎶
watched it about an hour ago, loved it because it was just pure fun and the graphics were awesome. Very straightforward movie but just fun.
Luigies ringtone🙌🏽!
Love his opinions. Explained very well.
Especially after seeing the Pizzeria in the movie, A Punch Out movie with a Rocky styled story would be my absolute favorite thing
We better see his feet in the sequel
This was a damn good little kids movie that hit all the Mario nostalgia I wanted of it. Loved it way more than I thought I would.
The Mario Mix music here is great, really makes me miss that game.
That Starly on the volcano was bloody amazing. I laughed a lot everytime it was on my screen
My 3 year old has been quoting Starly since we saw it and it’s hilarious hearing something so dark come from him. Warms my black heart.🤣
Wasn't it a Luma? (From Mario Galaxy)
Once i saw that Miyamoto-san was involved in the creation of this film i had no doubts it would be amazing. even tho the studio was the minions studio they do a great job with the animation
Miyamoto-san would NEVER allow a shitty Mario movie. NEVER.
He allowed it once and he learned from his mistake.
I liked it for what it was. I'm really upset they didn't credit the DK Rap composer at the end though. Seems really spiteful.
I just got back from seeing it 5 minutes ago. It was a fun movie and exactly what I expected. The voices were fine too.
That's nearly every film these days isn't it? The female character is perfect at literally everything with 0 practice lol
My issue was moreover Mario's training montage essentially starting and stopping with that and thereafter being practically an expert.
For Peach I felt they balanced it with her having to surrender in the end but yeah potentially could've had more nuanced scenes to develop her team dynamic.
King Koopa writing love songs about "Peaches" absolutely sent me!
🤣🤣🤣
Chris Pratt and everyone else sounded great! Just like Ben Schwartz as Sonic and Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu 😂
But seriously though, we now have the movie world voices and we'll always have the video game world voices.
I thought Donkey Kong stood out pretty well, considering, but Bowser did steal the show in the scenes he was in.
Thank you Max. I want to see it now. You are the voice of reason. Calm and collected. Everyone else i feel was expecting some deep story about a plumber who jumps on turtles..
Been hearing a TON of great word of mouth of this movie! Definitely gonna watch it.
The movie created it's own genre. This is the first one. Masterpiece.
As a 40 year old, this is what I wanted in the early 90's. I know the technology/movie graphics just wasn't there at the time.
I saw it with my 6 year old and she loved it. I'm 40 and got all the references. Fun time. When Max said Mega Man movie my eyes lit up, that would be amazing. It could be in the same tone as the Mario movie. Seems like Metroid and Zelda might need a little more serious tone.
I always thought that a Mega Man movie in the style of that Astro Boy movie would have worked very well
Metroid is my favorite Nintendo franchise so I hope they have something planned for it.
Did you ever read the Archie Mega Man comics? Something in that vein with that tone would be great.
The blue star killed me🤣
I would actually cry if they made a megaman movie that was like the Mario movie... not joking, like... REAL tears dude...
The Banana throw from the monkey in jungle kingdom straight up killed the other guy in the explosion lmao
I tried watching Max live for the Mario movie review but he just playing RE4 Mercenaries
The brotherly love between Mario and Luigi was soo adorable, hope the next film gives us more moments. Also wishing for Luigis Mansion.
Metroid and Star Fox crossover would be next level
I don't know why I get emotional while watching this review. Im just glad that Mario Movie was really good.
I'm not going to lie, I cried.
genuinely the most fun i’ve had watching a movie i audibly gasped like a dozen times
Totally agreed, when I saw the trailers I was mildly worried about Chris and Seth not sounding like the characters but listening to it while it happens I wasn’t taken out of it
Gasped at what?
Makes you think if maybe a super smash bros movie will be possible in the future
that would be epic. i even imagined a marvel vs. capcom movie
They could Avengers it. Do a bunch of solos, then everyone comes together to stop Master Hand.
The only negative I've seen is apparently there's some music that was cut from the film in place of generic music like 'Take On Me' and I think somone said 'Back In Black'.
I look forward to seeing it still.
I saw the movie yesterday with my family. It was very good we really enjoyed it.
This was the second time I've EVER heard a theater clap. Crazy.
People been clapping in theaters since the first Avengers.
@@emiami458 Pratt was fantastic.
@@JoelGarcia-lu3tw You're the first person I've seen say that😅 Most seem to tolerate him.
@@JacksonLane02 granted wish there was more interaction between toad and peach
I loved it, all the references was amazing
I actually just saw It today, and I gotta say being able to recognize every reference, musical motif, and "background" character made this movie a very biased 10/10 for me.
Instant top 3 for me, loved the entire thing from start to finish.
I for one am hoping and looking forward to an eventual Super Smash Bros cinematic universe haha
I already saw it twice. If I had time and money, I would've seen it a third time. It gets a 5/5 from me.
How long do you think it’ll stay in theaters? I watched it with my family but I plan on watching it again… maybe this upcoming Friday
@@_YESIMHIGH I can't imagine them canceling the screenings until May
It would be really interesting if they built a Nintendo Cinematic Universe that led to a Smash Bros cross over film.
I had so much fun watching the movie! It was so hard to stay quiet. It was like a Mario party (pun not intended).
Really packed with charm and creativity. That final showdown was just so awesome too!
And I gotta say it. Peach in her biker outfit was something.
That one shot they gifted us with. You know the one.
I’m glad you liked it Max! I couldn’t believe how much I loved it. Couldn’t be happier!
Had me smiling the whole time too! Took my nephew as well, he loved it. All around great time and look forward to owning it physically :)
Its an action movie. From beginning to end. Action, feels like a game. I loved it.
This movie tested so well that rumor has it that it greenlit a Zelda movie that is currently in pre-production.
