Well, the people tried to have the statue removed the "correct" way for years, & it didn't happen so they took matters into their own hands. This is what empowerment looks like. The police need to look the other way at this one, like they are used to doing when their fellow officers break the law.
The statue should not have been there as it's a symbol of oppression and racism. I agree that it should have been removed as it stands as an insult to black people. On the one hand, I completely understand but on the other, I don't think vandalism and aggression are doing any favours for the cause.

This statue was raised 100 years after Britain ended global slavery...it was raised because of all the great buildings and things this man did for Bristol, not as a celebration of slavery.
Here is a better solution a Statue saying we sorry for this action taken by our country and in memorial to remember how past failure we will like to place a symbol to remind us all we are all 1 under the sun and should work together for a better future and not allow our past to repeat itself. something along that line would have shown to the world the intent of creating a better future, but no we have a statue gratifying a salve trade what because we built hospital from the slave fortune he has amassed over is lifetime.
"condemned", so stupid, it belongs to the people, and if they want it in the harbor to offend the fish there instead of fellow man on the surface, then cool, let the fish deal with it
danam0228 “the people” A small minority of foolish, self-righteous dickheads destroyed a piece of history. Now the vast, vast majority (who had no part in this act of vandalism) have been robbed of part of their cultural history. So much for “belonging to the people”
These protesters have completely disregarded the feelings of the majority of the people who don’t want the statue to be removed. And when these people actually did take it down they end up throwing it in the river! Like that is the example a modern society is supposed to be taking when we are all meant to be more environmentally conscious about dumping. I hope they are able to fish it out of the river, and just as a punishment to these idiotic rioters, actually put it back up again, IN BULLET-PROOF GLASS.
Whether or not the statue should have gone, I'd be weary of letting those with little to no life experience make permanent decisions that affect us all.
I'm italian and i live in Bristol, so i'm a foreigner, that means i could easily be targeted with racist harassments, or perhaps here in Bristol they hate racism in general and not just the racism towards black people?
Why don't they condemn the African chiefs that sold them & the Arabs that purchased them they should be condemning every race and country that was involved in slavery not just taking it out on the European who also purchased them.
thats is so sad. a statue is made for someone who did honorable good for the community. dunno why this British hating media have to paint a story like that this statue was known criminal for 120 years and now finally punished. seriously, where's the sense of outrage?
Very true, same people condemning their neighbours for not clapping for the NHS. Meanwhile they spread the disease on mass. Did they not read that black people are twice as likely to die from corona as whites?
No it's being an uncouth, ignorant, impulsive, entitled savage. That might apply to the 'new' British on our streets - but it does not apply to actual traditional Brits.
I fear this behaviour towards our police and our country will demonize them in the eyes of people who are not prejudice and only perpetuate the opinions of those who already are, this is doing more harm than good to their cause.
What should we do with statues of Gaius Julius Caesar? He also owned slaves. And what about Colosseum - gladiators were slaves and died for entertain purposes. Should Italians demolish it? I dont think its ok to judge people outside the cultural context. Slavery was OK for many civilizations during eons and eons of time, but exactly the white race was first who proclaimed slavery as a sin. The statue should not have been there as it's a symbol of oppression and racism. I agree that it should have been removed as it stands as an insult to black people. However, I am conflicted as to whether it should have been torn down as an act of vandalism. On the one hand, I completely understand but on the other, I don't think vandalism and aggression are doing any favours for the cause.
