In this video, we explore the limited outback EV charging options between Threeways in the NT and Mount Isa in QLD, as well as the Queensland Electric Super Highway from Mt Isa to Townsville.
    We cover topics including:
    - Flooding on the Barkly Highway
    - Barkly Roadhouse/Homestead - which has 15A charging
    - Northern Territory/Queensland border
    - Camooweal which has 32A charging at the RACQ and 15A at the campground
    - My knack for finding potential charging spots
    - “Fast DC charging between Mount Isa and Townsville
    - Tritium reliability
We are undertaking a 35,000 km+ figure-eight lap in our Tesla Model Y RWD. The planned route is Canberra - Port Augusta - Darwin - Broome - Perth - Port Augusta - Alice Springs - Mount Isa - Townsville - Brisbane - Melbourne - Hobart. We are traveling at a leisurely nomadic pace and don't plan to finish until November 2024.

We did a trip from Vic up thru NSW and QLD thru the country town routes (Brokenhill etc) in our Tesla also RED and had no issues finding accommodation with over night charging. I love your efforts and experiences. Keep up the good traveling.

Red or white goes best with the black trim, but there are too many white cars out there :)

My next big road trip is Brisbane to Palm Cove. Pales into insignificant compared to the journey you do, but when you work, getting time off is not easy. Keep the videos coming. Also, some idea of what you pay for charging in the more remote places would be interesting.

@alasdairdougall7868 Thanks for the words of encouragement and suggestions for more content. I had planned to do a grand reveal of my charging spreadsheet of data at the end of the trip, it will include the breakdown you are looking for. A sneak peek… we paid very little. The worst was probably $50. Many were free with accomodation, or a nominal amount or donation.

Great to see your journey. We went for our first day trip in our new Model Y SR and got a broken windscreen thanks to a truck going 100km through roadworks. I got quoted $1, 900 on the Tesla App for replacement. I've been told that is daylight robbery from some people. My Sister told me it costs her $3000 on her Mazda CX5. Have you had to get a windscreen replacement yet?

@RaymondVolker sorry to hear that. Yeah after passing one too many road trains, in the top end, we got some chips that ended up being large cracks. Had to wait until we got to Perth to replace with Tesla. Cost us $1960, so same as your quote. I don’t know if it’s daylight robbery but I do know I’d be reluctant to have someone else do it until I could be sure they know what they are doing. There is a lot of tech at the top of the windscreen for the Tesla Vision system. In hindsight we may have been able to get the chips repaired in Darwin, but that boat has sailed.

i found most town showgrounds have 3 phase, and are usually pretty accommodating when looking for a charge. but cant wait to travel across Northern Australia in the Tesla.

@SydneyEV you are right there. I wonder how many are not listed? As always it is the right thing to do, and ask. If they have no idea on price I always err on the side of paying too much. I would much rather leave them with a positive attitude to EV owners. After all many of us a saving a pretty penny on running costs, the least we can do is donate a bit of that back.

That’s great news @outbackev-hunter6035. That should encourage more EV owners to enjoy the amazing NT outback.

Any plans to upload more regular EV content on here?

@_Sensei_8 the focus has been remote outback charging, but now that we are on the east coast that kinda dries up. I do plan to post most milestone videos and stats of our trip. I also plan an update video on what you need in terms of cables for outback charging. What sort of other topics would you like to see me cover?
