Outback road trip? What do you need in an emergency. #outback #Tesla #evcharging
In this video, I’ll highlight some of the essential items we brought along on our 35,000 km journey around Australia, just in case of emergencies.
Breakdowns:
- We carried a spare wheel, which is especially important when traveling in remote areas, though fortunately, we didn’t have to use it.
- We also brought two types of tire repair kits, including a tire inflator, which can be a quick fix if you get a puncture.
- For added safety, we had a warning cone to use in place of a traditional triangle.
- We secured two forms of roadside assistance: one with Tesla and another with RACQ, giving us coverage across the country.
- We packed extra water, which we stored in space-saving bags that fit into the car’s hidden compartments.
- Finally, we brought along camping gear, including a tent and a butane stove, just in case we needed to set up camp unexpectedly.
Personal Safety:
- We put together a custom first aid kit tailored to our needs, and even took a first aid course to be prepared for any medical situations.
- Portable, rechargeable lights were a great addition, proving useful in various situations from setting up camp to providing light in poorly lit accommodations. www.amazon.com.au/WUBEN-Rechargeable-Waterproof-Hurricane-Emergency/dp/B0C13G8LN4/
Connectivity:
- We ensured we had mobile service with both Optus and Telstra, as coverage can be spotty in remote areas.
- Additionally, we brought along a Starlink satellite system, which provided us with reliable internet access even in the most isolated locations.
Charging:
- We carried RFID cards for accessing charging stations, which is essential in areas with limited connectivity.
- We also brought extra charging cables and plugs to ensure we were prepared for any charging scenario.
We’re thankful that we didn’t need to use most of these items during our trip. However, we did assist someone who was stuck in the Pilbara region. They were trying to get fuel at the Pardoo Roadhouse, which had been taken out by a cyclone, leaving them stranded. We helped shepherd them 130 km-on the red fuel light-into Port Hedland. It was good to be able to lend a hand.
So, what do you think? Did we forget anything important? Let me know in the comments below. Stay safe out there-over and out.

      If you don't have any other option e.g. portable satellite, or one of the newer phones with emergency SOS via satellite, then something like that is advised.

    Very informative video thanks. A bit of travelling fun I guess.....unless you want to use your A/C......and drive at a reasonable speed.....or tow something like a boat or caravan...etc.

    • @AUSY8
      @AUSY8 9 годин тому

      You do need to compromise on speed or travel time in places with no access to fast charging. This is only temporary and will change over time as the networks expand. FWIW, we have never had to travel without the A/C or heat on. With heat pumps, those system's are very efficient in many EVs these days

    I fear of people who try to travel in outback (even without extreme like Nullarbor crossing, just highway trip like Sydney-Adelaide via Hay) without any redundancy. Without fuel cans (ooops, EV... not possible), water (50L min... oops, no space, no weight allowance), heavy first aid kit including oxygen and AED (oops, no space), communications (mobile is not enough), way to powernap even under full sun at +45 (oops, car becomes an oven in 5 min) or at night at 0... long long list of equipment and features providing survival for at least couple of days in harshest outback condition. Oh, yes, did I mention something like light but full scale motorbike onboard, able to autonomously travel several hundreds km to nearest civilisation after kangaroo hit or breakdown? No? Of course no, this is not for car drivers. Yes, all this together calls "expedition van/truck". Everybody else deemed to be test rabbits, and to find them (their corpses) takes couple of month.

    • @AUSY8
      @AUSY8 День тому

      Thats probably a bit extreme. There's a middle road when some planning for emergencies is needed. I can't but help think of how aboriginals have traversed this continent for tens of thousands of years without access to a AED :)

    • @antontsau

      @@AUSY8 Nothing extreme. I got kangaroo strike last year which disabled my Hiace (auxilliary radiator was literally bent in half, so most coolant out), lucky it was old school toyota, it was diesel, it was winter and it could make last 10 km to Balranald without coolant, where it was patched and next day continued to Adelaide. But it was extremely unpleasant experience. Remark about "month to search" was also based on real story, 5 or 6 years ago some bogan from Melbourne went fishing to Darwin on his ute, just a small trip on free week... after month of search he was found somewhere in SA outback near Coober Pedy. Kangaroos traverse even now. Not all of them succede, the whole highway Broken Hill-Dubbo covered with their corpses every morning, but who cares if 10% perished on the way? Do you want to travel with the same survival rate?

    • @AUSY8

      @@antontsau I don't doubt what you are saying and there are dangers out there. We saw them. I met a guy stuck at the Mundrabilla Roadhouse with a radiator taken out by a kangaroo. He was stuck there for days, while a part was shipped from Adelaide. My view is that if you a) accept there are good people out there willing to help you, and b) stick to the major paved roads e.g. Route 1 and the Stuart, then we are at a lower risk of being stranded without any help. Also reduces the need for the laundry list of just-in-case stuff you suggest.

    • @antontsau
      @antontsau День тому

      @@AUSY8 Stuck in roadhouse its good case scenario. Much worse is when there are 100 km to this roadhouse, +45 with scorching sun and your car cant move at all. No people there. Nobody. Its outback. On highway you can rely on someone else (btw - you rely on them, but can they rely on you? What you can do for them in case they need if you do not have this looooong and weighty list?), 20 km on side road and no one there for days. And even if someone can give you a lift to civilisation 90% you loss your car, with no insurance covers it.

    Great you had Starlink.. another option for Satellite service is the iPhone 14\15 Emergency SOS via Satellite. Extreme outback is exactly the use case for this tech, and (1 year?) comes free with the handset. Believe it uses GlobalStar's constellation. Optus (supposedly later this year) will have Direct to Cell Starlink LTE connectivity, initially just SMS messaging but better than nothing too.

    I remember a time when you were legally required to carry a spare tyre with legal tread or you could be fined. When and why did they change that law. No matter what the law now requires I still carry a spare in good condition and if going to remote places, two spares. It is just good sensible prudent risk management.

    • @AUSY8
      @AUSY8 3 дні тому

      I'm assuming it's now legal for cars to be sold without any spare, because Tesla is not the only manufacturer that does this. I'm guessing Tesla, and others, consider their included roadside assistance as sufficient for covering people needing help fixing or replacing a tyre. However as I said in the video, it only covers you in reasonably populated areas. As for carrying 2 spares, are you are talking about remote areas that are off-road or away from the major highways? My definition of remote, as a city boy, is a major highway with only a roadhouse every few hundred k's

    we bought a full size spare tyre and it took up about 1/2 the boot space on our crossing of OZ. a 25 ltr water bottle took up a lot also. we also had the usual tyre goo repair kits and tyre plug kits, and of starlink, starlink being a very good security blanket as you will never be out of contact with it if anything goes wrong, and allowing wifi phone calls. of course, taking all the gear means you will never need to use it. Not from direct experience but be aware of the Tesla Flat Tire small print - good service if you are metropolitan but a remote call out might be quite different - "Flat Tires Tesla will provide Roadside Assistance to owners who experience a flat tire within 50 miles (80 km) of a Tesla Service Center. If a tow is necessary, Tesla covers the transportation costs for the first 50 miles (80 km) provided the vehicle is towed to a Tesla Service Center and you complete the tire repair and/or replacement through Tesla directly. In all other situations, including if Tesla cannot complete the tire repair and/or replacement because you have aftermarket wheels and/or tires, Tesla may still be able to assist you with towing the vehicle at your full cost, due at time of tow. In all cases, you are responsible for the cost of the tire repair and/or replacement. In the event of a tow, see “Towing” above for instructions. "

    That charger you are standing next to it says Out of Service on it yet you are charging off it. Was it Delta hardware? Roughly how fast did you drive along the Barkly Hwy? Is your Y a Long Range or Standard Range? Asking as I have a Kona(extended range premium spec) and thinking about doing similar in future. Looks like NRMA need to get some of their remote solutions to some of the places along the Barkly Hwy then although staying overnight if arriving at the right time is fine as even a 15A outlet will give me 11kW charging.

    Those Tritium units NRMA has put in are the two cars per satellite as there is 2 cables unlike the older units they can actually charge two cars at once so 4 cars could use it not that there is many Chademo cars that have done this as yet and don't expect there to be many as CCS2 is the standard and all new EV's only have CCS2.

      We are on Telstra. We did not have any issues activating charging. For the networked sites we mostly used an RFID card linked to the Evie and Chargefox networks. For the rest it was either free or we negotiated a price with the site owner. As for connectivity on the road, most roadhouses had at least 3G/4G but the the signal would barely reach 30km down the road before we entered black spots of many hundreds of kilometres.

      @AUSY8 Місяць тому

      @RaymondVolker sorry to hear that. Yeah after passing one too many road trains, in the top end, we got some chips that ended up being large cracks. Had to wait until we got to Perth to replace with Tesla. Cost us $1960, so same as your quote. I don’t know if it’s daylight robbery but I do know I’d be reluctant to have someone else do it until I could be sure they know what they are doing. There is a lot of tech at the top of the windscreen for the Tesla Vision system. In hindsight we may have been able to get the chips repaired in Darwin, but that boat has sailed.

    Interesting video but I’d go nuts sitting on 80 or 90 kph. Plus the road trains catching up… We did 35,000 km last year in our Ford Ranger based motorhome. Used quite a bit of diesel. Can I ask what your average power costs were for say, each 1000 km block. We used to live in the NT and I was a member of the SES. We attended quite a few fatal rollovers on the Stuart Highway. A tip, you have a heavy spare wheel right behind your seat, that wheel plus all the other unrestrained stuff in your car will kill you in a crash. Make up a restraint net if you’re doing more road trips like this, it could save your life.

    • @AUSY8
      @AUSY8 2 місяці тому

      We have just clicked over 30,000 km on the trip. I estimate we did about 10% of that distance at 80-90, the rest would be at the speed limit. With access to fast charging we had fun recently going at 130 km/h on parts of the Stuart. Once fast charging becomes pervasive, the hypermiling hacks we used will be considered quaint by future EV owners. I plan to post a future video on a summary and costs of all the charging we did. The majority of it was free as part of our accomodation cost (either campground/roadhouse or Airbnb). So the answer is going to surprise most. However not many of us have the time to do slow trickle charging on a 30,000km road trip and so I would not use our costs as typical. As a teaser, for the first 1,100 km our total charging costs were $51. That included a bit of free NRMA free charging on the Hay Plain. I think those chargers are now in billing mode. Good points on the unrestrained objects in the car. I did consider the risk and figured the best place for the wheel was behind a seat because it is immediately restrained by the seat for a forward collision. However if we are rear ended or T-boned, gods knows what it would go. As for rest to it, there's way too much of it to even know where to start. Under normal circumstances we do not travel this way so have accepted the risk. In fact now that we have reached the civilisation of the east coast I plan to ditch the spare and just rely on Tesla and NRMA roadside assistance. On that note is anyone interested in an unused Bruamach spare wheel? Will suit Model 3 or Model Y.

    If the day comes when you can drive your EV (with 10% left) into a proper facility identical to a normal petrol station with staff and just plug in, charge up in 5 minutes to 100%, then go inside and pay the person at the till for your “fuel” with cash or card, that’s when I will take EVs seriously. This phone app nonsense would drive me bonkers.

    • @AUSY8
      @AUSY8 2 місяці тому

      I think those days have sailed. A majority of EV's charge at home. It's just plug and go there. When we lived in the city we only ever visited a servo for air or a 1L of milk. On road trips in populated areas, Tesla have the best experience for a Tesla car with a Tesla charger... just plug in and walk away. No need to use any app. In many cases with chargers being in town's that we used to bypass e.g. Euroa, we now get to visit the local cafe and interact with real people there. Very refreshing compared to freeway service centres.

      @@AUSY8 Having a little EV runabout in town or the suburbs with home solar charging would be fine, but apartment blocks are being built at a much higher rate than single dwellings in Australia. I’ve rented a few EVs over the past 2 years and I think they’ve still got a long way to go before they’re as versatile as a conventional car. If you’re having to charge up at Euroa after, I assume, leaving Melbourne and heading north up the Hume, that’s only 160km. Or am I misinterpreting this. Nice little historic town though, always worth a stop there.

    • @AUSY8
      @AUSY8 2 місяці тому

      @@MrPropanePete Yeah apartment blocks are probably the harder one to solve. You have to deal with body corporates, power, sharing etc etc. While EV's do have a long way to go here in Australia, if you look at markets like California or Norway they must have overcome the versatility hurdle already. How else do you explain their market dominance there? We have had an EV now since 2020. And that's our only vehicle. We are unique but we made it work, and there is no going back to ICE for us. We used to live in Canberra, so Euroa was a favourite stop on the way down to Melb.

      Sorry to hear it's half working. I think you are close if Dishy is online. I'm assuming it also shows as online from your account on Starlink.com? I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's probably your ethernet connector. Remember to wire it as a "B' connector and use the Starlink colours as normal, i.e. no swapped colours. Also make sure the wires are well seated. I've prepared many an ethernet connector where a wire or two is not seated correctly. As for ground, I did not ground the connector.I used a plastic connector and I don't think it has facility to use ground. Hope this helps. Good luck

Stuck on a diesel genny with no grid connection.
