    I love this car, I ordered one for the beginning of March. I just loved the over-engineered drivetrain. I felt bullet proof on my test drive and was just sooooo fun to drive. Also, it wasn`t too rough when driving slowly either. Just a great, good-looking (looks better in person), fuel efficient, sports car. (and reliable)

    Thank you for mentioning the Toyota Celica GTS. I had a White 1985 Hatchback 5 speed with a performance package that I bought in Germany and ran on the Autobahn while i was stationed at Hahn AFB. Then I shipped it to Sacramento California and ran the mountains of the Sierra Nevada. It was a fantastic car. I traded it in in Omaha, NE for a 1987 Mazda RX-7. Great car ancestor to the Scion and Subaru.

    @ Charlie. Great review. But you need to reduce the time it takes to get these completed. The FRS came out in June. This was obviously shot during the summer. We already have snow on the ground. This footage mus be at least 5 months old.

    52 Years old. 2 MGB's. 2 Triumph Spitfires. 1980 Z28. 1979 Corvette. 1980 Corvette. 2007 Mustang GT/CS. Bought one. Love it. Ultramarine. Manual. Only review I have seen yet that bashes this car. Most of you probably need to get down to your dealership and drive one. I can't afford a Porsche Cayman S. Can You? Toyota/Subaru reliability with a warranty to match for less than 30k! This car is a HOOT to drive! Hope I helped.

    Fair review of the car. Everyone just needs to remember the FR-S was designed as a starting point to be modded as owners see fit. Toyota/Subaru put effort into the things that truly matter for a driver's car - chassis/mechanical layout and suspension. Interior, exterior, power/grip levels, intake/exhaust sounds can be easily changed in comparison. A bad chassis and suspension layout can't easily be changed without re-engineering the car - and will definitely not do .95G's on 'Prius' tires...

    I absolutely love my FRS and I totally get why the press love it so much too. HP deficiency is relative and doesn't bother me most of time. Everything else is superbly executed. The car just makes you want to dance on the streets.

    I drove a manual BRZ from Providence RI to D.C. I was on fumes when I reached D.C. Just over 420 miles. It took just under 12 gallons to fill up. I have a 13.2 Gallon tank. The trip computer said 35.1 Mpg. On winter grade gas. I averaged about 70 mph. I was not light footing it. Sometimes I ran higher sometimes lower. I weigh 195 pounds and had 50 pounds of luggage. On the way up in the rain I got 32.5 mpg. 31 mpg is my average for the first 10k. 26 mpg is my worst tank (drifting in the snow).

    The Prelude was a hell of a car. I like it better than the Z. I love those beautiful 4 wheel drifts it would do when you run out of traction. One of the best FWD cars even in base form. You are right the FRS is like a RWD Prelude or RSX.

    Ross I own the BRZ manual. Around town. I shift at 3500 rpm just before the dip. The cars is quick enough to pull ahead of traffic if you shift at that point. There is a dip in torque but not in power. It only affects you if you like you said floor it between 3.5 and 4.5k. As long as you are moving above 30 mph you can leave it in 6th gear all day long. You can pass with no need for a downshift. You will not hit 3500 rpm till almost 80 mph. If you want to run at that point just go to 5th.

  • @fatboy19831
    @fatboy19831 11 років тому

    The BRZ has more standard equipment and has the option of leather and daul zone heating. The Subaru is also more neutral and has a slightly better bottom end of the power band. The FRS is more tail happy and has slightly more top end. The BRZ is $1300 more has HID and Nav standard. The HIDs are awesome. The NAV sucks. There will be 1/2 as many BRZ's as Scions. The BRZ's are sold out. You can find an FRS at sticker today if you are willing to put some miles in.

    They're pretty different, one is RWD and one is FWD. For me I would say get the 13' Si Sedan. It's pretty fast, reliable, great resale value, and fairly practical! It's a pretty great car.

  • @DocWolph

    As I said, a padded cargo bench. It only actually counts as a seat, if a person can sit in the "seat", feet on the car's floor, seats set as the car will be driven. It's a 2-seater.
    Also I think the Z' added 450lbs has more to do with it having a larger more powerful engine, more complicated tranny, and just more stuff overall. If lightweightness is all that matters, the FR-S/BRZ will fit the bill wonderfully. But if you want an overall faster car, a stock FR-S/BRZ is not going to cut it.

  • @thebigwarthog
    @thebigwarthog 11 років тому

    It's not a joint venture between Scion and Subaru, Scion is just a badge name for select Toyota models but Toyota itself designed the body and Subaru provided the engine.

    Im probably going to get one of these, but planning on installing a trd suspension on it, adding a performance chip and maybe a cold air intake on the engine.. Little by little you keep on adding that little bit of power that it lacks while it is still like it came out of the dealer

    It depends on what you want. The Civic Si isn't going to have you pounding the steering wheel like the FR-S will, demanding more power. Either one will do well on the track, but obviously the Civic can't power oversteer if that's your thing (it isn't mine)

  • @TheSansida11

    Amazing handling, no turbo lag cause it has no turbo, slower than a slog in straight lines but it is a different stories in bends and curvy roads certainly make up what it has missed in horse power

  • @JLai1969
    @JLai1969 11 років тому

    This car is the replacement for the AE86. It's a modern version of it. Which means it isn't a highpowered quarter mile car. It isn't a traffic light racer. It's for you to rip it in the curves and mountain roads. Drift it, carve it, enjoy it. It's a cheap, real sports car, providing motorsports fun to the masses. This is meant for young men with small wallets with room to upgrade in the future.

  • @fatboy19831
    @fatboy19831 11 років тому

    You can fit a full sized adult back their. They have to lay across the back seats like a couch. I have done it several times. One of my friends she read a book back there. The Z is a chopped sedan that's why even though it is smaller than the FRs it weighs 450 pounds more. Allot of that weight sits over the front wheels.

  • @fatboy19831
    @fatboy19831 11 років тому

    I agree. The Miata is a little better than the FRS. More fun and lighter on its feet. For those of you that can fit in one. Man the FRs/BRZ is way more comfortable. For me at 6.5 feet tall it is my only light weight option. My wife and I took a wonderful 1200 mile trip in the BRZ. Her medium suite case and my tiny one fit perfectly. I averaged 34.5 mpg that included allot of back road mountain driving. We took her mom out to dinner. You can't do any of that in the Miata.

    Exactly. It's a feature of the D4S injection system. I'll gladly take the better gas mileage at cruising speeds for a trade off of more torque available at 2k and 5k. If I'm flogging the car, I shouldn't ever be below 5k anyway. And if I'm cruising, I want the best economy, which means less torque. People have "fixed" it with ECU tunes, but I'd rather just downshift to 4th or 3rd. If I wanted to just mash the pedal, I would have bought the automatic. :)

    Yes. Compared to a Buick. They are much better than they where in the past. The faster you go the more the ride smooth-ens out. Mazda has really softened up the ride on the MX5. The RX8 road very well.

    A stroked 2zz wt 2 liters and 200hp would have been amazing. I loved the one I drove but the engine feel was the deciding factor. I drove a base model and it was 25 out the door. Then I drove the 14 Civic Si coupe and just liked the drivetrain better in the Si. I could have lived with either, I suppose.

    Complaining about a linear power delivery? Would you rather it be *weaker* in the low revs? Or consistent all the way through? Top end "rush" like swapping into VTEC in old Hondas just reminds you how little power there is in the low end.

    So it just needs the turbo and it would have more sales. Honestly I am glad I found a good shape used 370z for 23.5k last week because I feel I got a WAY better deal with the Z than paying that much for a fugly scion. I even drove the FRS, wasnt that much better than my old Preludes, no sense in going sideways in a car, I wana go up and step into a better car!

  • @Patrick-if4vo
    @Patrick-if4vo 10 років тому

    The one thing he describes as lacking, is the power on uphills and grip runs; however, this is where you start learning tuning and upgrading. The oversteer it has compared to the BR-Z allows you to work on your braking drift and 4 wheel drift techniques. He says its a great track car, it's not that great with stock parts. It's fun, but 200hp on a track isn't that amazing compared to cars with 250+hp. It's true potential comes out on steep downhill roads. I own the FR-S and love it. You start to pick up on its full potential a day at a time. It is an amazing vehicle for beginners (disable traction, stability, and ABS to learn better control).

  • @JLai1969

    The Current Mustang is an excellent performance car. Whit very good quality. It can outperform almost any sub 40k car on the track or the drag strip. They are also fun. The base 6, the GT the Boss all world class. On top of that its made in America. 3600 pounds is still 3600 pounds. You can fight physics but you wont win. As good as the Mustang is the FRS is far better on the drive thru that twisty back roads. If Toyota pulls off the 300hp / 300 lb-ft GT86 hybrid in Tokyo we will re-visit this.

    The only thing I don't like about the FRS, other than power output, is the witches nose around the badge. Why'd they do that? It wasn't necessary. Could've added character lines somewhere else, just looks weird.

    Unless you want to change the rims. I would just go with a much better summer tier. Talk to Tire Rack. The balance of the car should remain the same. Their will just be far more feel better braking and higher cornering limits. All the critics talk about power. My first upgrade after tires, will be the brakes. First fluid than cooling and front slotted rotors then the rears.

  • @fatboy19831

    Speed3 is a better choice if you're not going to the track, in my book...more doors, more storage, more torque, more power, and more comfort. Also similar MPG and honestly, I'm not liking what I'm seeing of the early reliability of the engine in the FR-S/BRZ

    I live in atlanta, ga and recently did a track event at Atlanta motorsports park. In my run group I had a couple FRS/BRZ's and they were ridiculously slow. I had a harder time passing a celica gts and nissan 240sx in my g35 coupe. These cars had so much potential but 200hp and 150tq is just pathetic and there is no reason they should not have come factory turbo charged making atleast 250hp/tq while maintaining the same 25k price point.

  • @fatboy19831
    @fatboy19831 11 років тому

    Drive it, I timed my BRZ at 6.7 seconds to sixty. I dropped the clutch at 4000 rpm and rode the burn out till second gear. With warm tires 6.4 seems attainable. Just winding out 1 to 2 from a dead stop you are talking 7.2 or so. The BRZ is faster than the SI civic. If just buy a hair. look up the times.

    Insurance is cheaper. An adult can sit side saddle in relative comfort. My friend and his girl road with me for 30 miles. She is 5-10 she read a book back their. Also you can lean back. Something you cant do in a 2 seat car. You have allot of storage space if you drop the back seats.

    I can not see this car being the next big thing unless we really start to see more cars along this line and price range, preferably starting for UNDER $20K. SO, here again is hoping for the Code 130R. But others should take the FR-S/BRZ example of purpose building their compact sport coupes to be competitive at the track more than on the dealer lot.

  • @ryoungii
    @ryoungii 11 років тому

    Ross, thanks for once again telling the truth. I've been waiting and hoping for this car. Having driven one, I didn't think it's quite there. A bit more power, or better still, just a broader torque curve and I think it would be perfect. What I don't want is some turbo, or supercharge testosterone-fest that can't be enjoyed on US roads. An extra 20-30 hp would be plenty, I just don't want to wear out my elbow, maybe in a couple of years?

    The last Integra was in 1999. It weighed 2500 pounds 1000 pounds lighter than the 1999 Mustang. Not only that at that point the Mustang was still of sub standerad quality and was an understeering pig. Back than Mustangs started falling apart when they left the showroom. Door panels would crack, seats would flop backwards. Ford would say its all normal. Sorry unless you were at the drag strip the base Integra was far more entertaining to drive. Whit FWD it had LESS understeer than the Mustang.
