These changes are interesting and I like thinking about the reasoning behind the changes. (I personally am a fan of the manga and I never got into the anime--it seemed so plot-reductive--but maybe even more issues were caused by the dub than I knew about.) I'm sure some are laziness/low budget/poor judgment etc., but still: It makes sense that the Japanese version would reference backstory for characters under the assumption that the audience was already sort of familiar with the series. The manga had been popular and the Toei animation had already been made. Kinda like how FMA:B didn't spend a lot of attention on the episodes that were animated in the original FMA. But the American audience wouldn't be familiar with the characters. Dumbing down the story to be more simple, making Yugi more of a "chosen one" and referencing his Puzzle early on, was probably a step to make the story accessible to a new (and young) audience. Ditto with oversimplifying game strategy, even if that backfires by making the game rules harder to understand. Simplifying the cards is unfortunate but probably more of a time constraint. Just thinking about having to photoshop all the shots cards in the series is making me tired. And the cultural shift of changing the focus from teamwork (very Japanese) to individual motivation (very American) at 8:08 is interesting. Changing card names/backgrounds is also understandable. Fun little fact - in the first airings of the episode in the US and the UK, they actually called Gaia by a translation of its Japanese name rather than the English one. The DVD releases of the episode fixed that by redubbing the two instances of its name being called (When Yugi summons it, and after Kaiba destroys it) I pretty much watched this show religiously when it was on Sky One, helps it was always played next to Pokémon so I never missed either XD
One thing I was really annoyed with in the English version was that 4Kids super exaggerated Yami's and Kaiba's taunts. Although Yami taunted somewhat in the Japanese version, it wasn't as much. In fact, he was less vocal about it as he just lets his own skills speak for itself which came out more graceful and noble on his part. The same goes with Kaiba. There were some parts in the Japanese anime where he was praising Yugi because he respected him as a skilled duelist but then they completely replaced it with him taunting Yugi in English. That really destroyed their character.

6:05 Yeah, the early translators thought it'd be 'hilarious' to translate card names that were originally English into Japanese, which just caused several problems later on (like with "Frog the Jam"/"Slime Toad"). This is due to them not understanding that name-based archetypes would be a huge deal in the game.
Omg I found this channel again! It felt like forever! You most likely don’t remember me for my UA-cam name was different but I even if I did have the same name you most likely wouldn’t remember me but holy crap your channel has grown!
I don't know if every change to the cards should be counted if the changes keeps the card in line with the physical US version. It makes sense for the 4Kids dub to change the name and appearance of cards so they match the cards that a watcher could go out and buy.
The goal is to catalog all changes, regardless of the reason the change was made. Hence why I include things like the additional commercial breaks. 4Kids themselves didn't specifically choose the format in which the network aired the show. It makes sense for the extra commercial breaks to be there, given the circumstances of its existence on western television. But regardless, a tangible change to the show was made, and I feel we should be aware of that.
I definitely feel things like the changes to the cards, changes to the damage number displays, the intro-outro changes, and additional commercial breaks should be mentioned, though I feel they should be very quick notes compared to the rest of the changes (unless they're particularly interesting or necessitated further changes). BTW, as someone who likes the English dub, I feel like referring to the characters by their dubbed name when talking about the 4Kids dub and by their original name when talking about the original version is a very smart move. It'll be a bit confusing for some for a few episodes (I admit, I still haven't quite got the original names down), but I think after a while we'll all get the hang of it.
The cards were actually changed to NOT look like the actual card game, because of laws meant to prevent corporations from using TV shows to advertise toys to kids. They skirted around the law by making the cards in the anime look slightly different from the actual cards. Look at the video again, the cards with japanese text look like the actual cards, while the english version's layout is nothing like the actual game.
imagine being pegasus voice actor and being told you need to come to dub episode one, and when they give you your lines, all you get is " hmmmmmmmmm..."
I know this is probably further in the next videos, but the funniest thing they change is one of the shadow duels where someone's feet is basiaclly going to be cut off lmaooooooo
It's a nice concept, but maybe, in the next episodes, mention quickly the recurent changes (like the opening, music, ending, etc.) could make it easier for you. Moreover, if some episodes are fast enought you could do more episodes per videos :3 Anyway, continue, its a good concept ^^
2:43 It sure is great that 4Kids shielded kids from the horrifying ramifications of a robot manga being in print on a poster in the background. Lord only knows what that knowledge would have done to the kids :'D

SourceOfBeing be on
As somebody who never watched, played, or really cared about YuGiOh at all. This was surprisingly entertaining.
Fun fact: Kaiba's "Also Sprach( a ) Zarathustra" has a typo :D
Does this mean Kaiba speaks German?
imagine being pegasus voice actor and being told you need to come to dub episode one, and when they give you your lines, all you get is " hmmmmmmmmm..."
As great as that would be, they unfortunately most likely recorded numerous episodes in one session.
You should def continue with this
I know this is probably further in the next videos, but the funniest thing they change is one of the shadow duels where someone's feet is basiaclly going to be cut off lmaooooooo
This was a great time... More please.
I like this video. You should do more.
It's a nice concept, but maybe, in the next episodes, mention quickly the recurent changes (like the opening, music, ending, etc.) could make it easier for you. Moreover, if some episodes are fast enought you could do more episodes per videos :3
Anyway, continue, its a good concept ^^
2:43 It sure is great that 4Kids shielded kids from the horrifying ramifications of a robot manga being in print on a poster in the background. Lord only knows what that knowledge would have done to the kids :'D
How many times have you watched this to point out every single difference
And I would like to see more of this
