Plastic furniture hack. It really works!

- We have some old and sun battered plastic garden furniture. They must be 12 or more years old. Apart from their look they still function very well.
There are various ways to make this old furniture look better and the method I choose was get a blow-lamp on it!
You've seen the results, what do you think?
Be carful not to over heat the plastic or else you will spoil the surface finish (as I did when you try and video and blow-lamp at the same time!)
All you are really doing is burning off/remelting the very top surface of the plastic.
I'm happy with the results and it has breathed a new life into the chairs and tables. Time will tell if I am able to do it again in a few years time.

The blow-lamp I used is the Rothenberger Surefire 2. Its a very versatile blow-lamp and I've had it for years and installed a number of central heating systems and performed various plumbing repairs in its lifetime and it has been faultless. It will take normal propane or the hotter MAPP gas disposable cyclnders. Links are below:

Bet that smells fantastic
I was in the garden when I did it but there wasn’t much in the way of fumes given off really
Now that chair is motivating
I used a small torch on mine and worked beautifully. Thanks for the video it saved me a lot of work.
Hi and thanks for the feedback. Mine are still looking good after two years! Thanks for watching👍🏽
I'd recommend just using petroleum jelly and wiping off excess, doing this draws the plastics within the plastic to the surface, making it brittle along with it soon fading again.
Hi, I might try that when they need sorting again. I must say though the chairs still look good and so far no broken legs! Thanks for watching 👍🏽
@@MikeMakesIt Glad to hear!
before or after?
They do this with spectators seats at football arenas in off season. Cheaper than buying new ones.
Interesting. Thanks Tony. Certainly this way it’s a money saver. Not too sure how many time it can be done but the results so far are great. Thanks for the feedback and for watching 👍🏽
As my daughter would say.. look dad this is a cool life hack
What ever we call it, it works! Thanks for watching
@@MikeMakesIt yeah pretty nice result. Irons out all them scratches and blemish. Kinda fun too right, giving me Beavis vibes.. "FIRE FIRE FIRE!
Heat gun works great as well
I haven't tried a heat gun, although it had been suggested, as I didn't think it would do a good job. Next time I need to do the chairs I'll try it. Thanks for the suggestion and of course for watching.
@@MikeMakesItdid the heat gun work?
@@help_1 I had a viewer say they used a heat gun with good results but I haven’t tried it myself
The heat gun doesnt get as hot as the torch, which will require heating the plastic deeper in order to get the surface to melt. You will risk deforming or outright melting thin areas like the backrest slats. Because the torch is hotter, it doesnt need to be held in the same place as long as a heat gun, so only a thin layer of the surface melts while the inside of the plastic stays cooler. I do this with faded plastic automotive trim pieces. Destroyed a few before realizing the torch works much better.
White chair is not applying
I’ve only tried it on the chairs I have and they were all green. I’m not sure why white would not work unless it’s a different sort of plastic to mine.
Nice bro 😊
This can be quite dangerous as the fumes givien off is poisonous
That’s always something to be aware of, of course but as I was in the garden I felt confident in the process. Thanks for the comments and for watching 👍🏽
Is machine ko kaha se kharid sakte hain kya bolte hain machine ko
Hi, take a look here if you mean the blow lamps. This was my original video. Thanks for watching 👍🏽 ua-cam.com/video/PLNQFfKuj6Q/v-deo.html
Hi
What is that tool please reply
This is what I used amzn.to/3IkhIua. but almost any blow lamp would work.
What is the science behind this?
Old plastic, and my chairs in particular, become shiny when heated with a flame due to a process called "thermal degradation". When plastic is heated, the heat energy causes the polymer chains to break down into smaller molecules.
The shiny appearance is due to the melting and resolidification of the plastic, which caused the surface to become smooth and shiny. This is more likely to occur with thermoplastic materials, which can be melted and reformed repeatedly by heating and cooling.
It worked a treat on my garden chairs and they still look great a couple of years on.
Thanks for the great comment and for watching 👍🏽
the plastic is made out of a plasticky material that also becomes plastic when you touch it with fires
Where we get this in coimbatore

Wth I will try these
Really works 👍🏽
Gamd pe plastic to nahi chipkegana
The plastic instantly "drys" and is not tacky so there is no danger of sticking to it. Thanks for watching.
Meri Bike me sem problem he . Bike ke rubber mein karke dikhao .
yah plaastik ke saath achchha kaam karata hai lekin shaayad rabar ke saath nahin।
@@MikeMakesIt taiyar nahin. back light connected rahati hai vo plastic
Is this shit work on plastic chopping board?
If it’s made out of the same type of plastic then it should. I’ve not tested it on a chopping board, should be interesting 👍🏽
Kaha se buy karen
Hi. So long as you have a blow lamp and the chairs there is nothing to buy.
It’s all fun and games until you’re diagnosed with cancer 20 years later.
Hi Julian, yes that’s a consideration but as I was in the garden I think the risks, if any, were exceptionally low. I wouldn’t recommend doing it in confined spaces, always a well ventilated area. Thanks for watching 👍🏽
