Hi, I’m Mike, and welcome to my channel!
I’ve always had a passion for all things electrical and mechanical and enjoy ways of making things better.
There are always a few projects underway in the workshop, most of which I’ll share here. They’ll range from a simple fix or review to a total car make-over. Keep a look out in the background of the videos for tasters of things to come.

Ryobi 4volt USB lithium system on test RC439 RL14-120G RB4L30 RB420
I like my Ryobi kit. If you've watched any of my videos you'd know that! Today I unbox a system that's been sitting in the workshop since July.
Do not make the same mistake as I have. Make sure you register your tools within 30days of purchase or else you won't be granted the 3 year warrantee, just the standard 1year!! You've been warned.
That aside, this is my first encounter with the Ryobi 4volt USB lithium system. Basically you could say it's just a miniature version of their big stuff. Well, actually it is very similar, but I like it never the less.
I ordered the RC439 which is their sequential charger. It can charge 3 batteries but only one at a time, hence the word sequential. Just plug in 1, 2 or 3 batteries and leave it to do its stuff. Charge time is 60mins or 90mins for the 2Ah and 3Ah batteries respectfully.
I like the little batteries and there is only one way to insert them into the tool or charger so even I cannot make a mistake! I noticed the 3 amp battery has what the 18volt system has and that's a "State of charge indicator". Sadly the 2Ah has not been granted this feature.
Currently I only have one "tool" from the Ryobi range and that's the inspection torch. Ryobi do have other torches in the range to offer (and a shed load of other useful gadgets) but this I feel would be the best for me for the kind of work I do.
The torch feels robust and has a top quality touch to it. A belt clip and a strong magnetic base is built into the design as well as an O ring in the battery cap area to keep out moisture. I could't see any information about an IPX rating for the torch so will have to assume it is just moisture resistant. The run time on the low lumen setting, and there are 3, ranging from 125l to 650l, is 32 hours with the 2Ah battery and 48hours when using the 3Ah. Pretty impressive I think.
I've included links to Amazon and Ryobi should you wish to explore this range further.

How about cooling the system? It seems on mine iy always lags on seeing the video. Do you know what could cause that or is the system is just slow or internet?
Hi, There is a delay on mine of about a second when watching on a fixed monitor attached to the Swann base unit and possibly more when on 4G. I suspect that's down to a lack of onboard processing power rather thank heat but if yours in a really warm place then the heat may add to the delay.
Absolutely ace helpful - and a good vibe. Thanks im on a 2 oven trad with the oil conversion
Glad it helped! Thanks for the feedback and of course for watching 👍🏽
Well executed Mike, but where did you get the plastic pipe connectors from?
Hi, I could have sworn I put links in for the connectors but I couldn’t find them either. I’ll upload the links to Amazon tomorrow for you. Thanks for watching 👍

@@Chief81 I expect the cameras are very similar. I must say, touch wood, I’ve not had any more issues. Thanks for watching 👍🏽
@ I’ve not had a look yet but sometimes these are sealed units so hopefully not & I’ll do what you did. Tbf these cams are over 5 years old & this is the first time I’ve had any water actually inside them. Driving rain in storms can & will get anywhere.

Plot twist: There was no silicone, the batteries leaked 😆 Really useful video thanks 👍
Glad it was helpful! Good luck with the fix 👍🏽
great for Rovers that drive for hours under the hot sun, but what sound improvement can you expect with an open engine bay bottom and with wing side vents?
It did make a difference but not a massive one for me.
Thanks for the video. I have had both the SB and more recently the DB models. The single bevel lasted about 2.5 years before I had pick up and the latest model 18 months before pick up. I did exactly what I see in your video i.e a wet stone and I am still considering what to do with latest machine. I had to carry out 2 subsequent strip downs with the SB model as it picked up again . I agree with your comment about keeping the rotary table clean / swarf ingress but having had the problem with my latest machine which has had little use I think that the issue may also be created with its design. The greatest mass is carried on the back of the table and this is where I see the pick up. The slide has to have clearance for it to turn (when I titled the saw head I could get 0.5mm feeler into the gap created at the front) and therefore as the head tends to tilt and lift it is applying the load on a smaller surface area. I think other than the pick up issue the machine is great and good value for money.
Hi Paul, for the money I think the saw is good value. Obviously made down to a cost otherwise perhaps the issue we have may have been made better with a PFTE surface or similar. My Sons saw has also gone the same way as mine did so clearly a point that needs addressing by Evolution.
Looked on mine Was blocked 🚫 up This shorted it
Glad it helped. Thanks for the feedback and for watching 👍🏽
Is there a second burner for the heating side?
@@GavinM47 No there is only the single burner. Mine used to heat hot water as well using a little tank sitting above the burner but I removed it and cut the fuel costs by a third. An Aga can heat water for washing and a Rayburn can heat water for central heating. That Aga tank Is too small for central heating.
Maybe there is a replacement for the rotor and someone has already bought it?

@@Spoonblob Good luck with the build, unfortunately software isn’t my strong suit. I got most of my info from the net and pieced it all together. @@MikeMakesIt thanks 👍
Thanks Mike, they look like well designed and made items, I hope they'll achieve what you require for working on the Landy ! They're quite pricey though I feel, by comparison to the 18v equivalents, I'm sure there will be some promotions come the Christmas period though !
Fingers crossed! Thanks for the comments Andy. I think the smaller format may be of some use in the nooks and crannies. As I said in the video the quality feels bang on and when the battery runs out I can slide in another. Thanks for watching 👍🏽
This seems expensive, £25 for a single cell battery, you can buy a 18 volt 5ah battery for £50 and that has about 8 cells in it, also the charger only charging one battery at a time, at that price it should charge all three at once.
Mine is way off. I just got it and while using NCV you don’t even have to touch something for it to start going off. I can touch my hand on the clamp and it starts going off. I don’t see any way to zero NCV. Only when you are measuring current, you can zero it. and when you use DC amps it just starts jumping all over the place, no matter how many times you zero it. Even if you put it right up to the wire, clamp around it, hit zero, and then turn the circuit on. It just starts jumping all over the place and giving you different readings every time you turn the circuit on and off. This thing is a joke.
Sounds as if you may have a duff one. I don’t use mine everyday but when I do it’s stable and bang on.
Thank god my Hotpoint heatpump tuble dryer has a removable cover on the bottom front right. Which allows you to remove the second filter and clean out the heat pump condenser/heating fins.
@@GavinDavies-tc6yn you’re certainly are lucky. As you can see from my videos it’s been a real pain. Thanks for watching 👍🏽
@@MikeMakesIt I feel for you. At least Hotpoint have modified the design on later models. But they should of done if from the beginning.
@@GavinDavies-tc6yn I’m now a Samsung fan boy. The drier wasn’t really drying even cleaning the filters every week didn’t really make a good difference come the end. ☹️
Great repair to typical rubbish Britpart item. (Could you have completely removed the broken plastic part and had a metal on metal bearing? ... Packed with copper slip)
Hi, thanks for the comments. Re: packing, probably yes but the plastic was an exact fit so with the plate I made it went back together quite well. Thanks for watching 👍🏽
Thanks for the video mike, gonna get my hands on the displays to tinker around. Just a quick question, may i know the dimensions/specs of the standoffs and mounting screws that you purchased to fasten the boards together? I've tried the link in your description but was invalid. Thanks:)

Standoffs updated. Any issues just let me know 👍🏽
My mum and dad have this same issue with a black crease care hotpoint tumble dryer. how come it get an issue now? we only had it for 2 years.
Two years is a long time for a tumble dryer! It’s possible you have a different problem. The condenser fins also got blocked on ours and this involved a total strip down and clean. I don’t remember having to clean the 3rd filter for a long time into the life of the machine though.

@@paulsharp5473 Hi Paul. No, I have not. When I have needed to connect to the Pi in the garden I’ve done it over the house network/wifi.

Difficult to see the head gear in the video when out of shot and gloves get pulled into the saw blade so no gloves. The saw Is too noisy without the head gear.
I decided to replace the filter head with a new better one from PIONEER, its even anodized. But for a field repair, you had a great idea.

Good stuff! Can you tell me where to buy the white plastic air bleed valve as a separate item? I can only seem to find it as a kit with the brass spigot.
Hi, when I bought one it was a separate unit but later when I checked, unfortunately, you do need to buy the spigot as well which is really expensive. The part number in 2017 was WJN500110 but now seems to incorporate the spigot . In 2017 it cost £15 for the plastic bit. Times have changed!! Thanks for watching 👍🏽

The display looks beautiful.
I’m really pleased with it. Still using it now. It’s a bit more trouble than a led display because of the way you have to shut it down but apart from that I really like it. Thanks for the feedback and for watching 👍🏽
Would you recommend if I were to make a clock out of it or the refresh would be too slow for a clock since it would need to refresh every minute?
@@silentobserver964 on a pi it takes around 30 seconds to reboot/refresh the display. This is when the display flickers. So for a clock, half the time there would be no real display. With a quicker processor perhaps you could get the display to refresh quicker. I’ve not looked at this though.
Just received my set, looks decent, checked squareness and it appears to be flawless. Very happy with these.
@@teis79 Glad yours are as good as mine! I think for the money they are really good value 👍
@@MikeMakesIt I wouldn't debate about that, you got me convinced 👍🏻 By the way, Presch states that the ruler is stainless.
@@teis79 👍For years I was of the understanding stainless was none magnetic but since learned I was wrong! We now use a good quality stainless here at work that is very magnetic.
Personally I would have used a diamond disc. The disc you used would have generated a lot of localised heat. But, as you say made in continuous lengths in the factory, and cut to length. So, if an eight year old can do it....
😂 Yes I’m sure there are correct ways of doing it, perhaps even one of the glass scoring tools but as the Dremel was at hand…. Thanks for the great comments and of course for watching 👍🏽
I followed these instuctions and it worked perfectly. NOTE your Watchman detector might not be clearly visible on top of the tank as shown, mine was mounted inside the tank (it's double-walled), under the access hatch. 4 Duracell plus AAA betteries are a lot cheaper than a replacement power tube! The original duracell batteries have worked for 20 years so I'll probably never have to do this again.
Hi and thanks for the feedback. I’m glad you got yours going. It’s a really good cash saver. I think mine had been in for a decade or more. Thanks also for watching 👍
That’s so satisfying to watch. Can’t wait to have a go in my old black plastic storage boxes 😮
@@marissaburgess6023 it great fun watching the transformation. Thanks for watching👍🏽
Hi Mike, it is me again lol.. the batteries i assume run out and i replaced them new (same Batteries as in the video) followed strict instruction the same as above like last year yet it is not working this time, any advice would be very much appreciated from you.. Thank you.
Hi. If you are able to measure the voltage at the connector of the battery tube you should be getting something slightly above 6 volts as they are new batteries. The center of the screw in connector must be the positive. If it’s not then there is something wrong with the battery fitting! Failing that unplug the receiver unit and leave it out for 30 mins. Mine goes a bit crazy when we have a power cut and can take hours until we get a correct display. The sender unit in the tank updates the unit about every 30mins so don’t expect to get a correct reading straight away. I hope this helps 👍🏽
@@MikeMakesIt Thank you so much Mike for your humble help and that makes sense, we are having far too many powercuts here this year being the worse. I have repeated the above video 3 times and last night the plug monitor just continued to flash after leaving it on for an hour or more each time, i even changed the plug socket to another. I have the very same brand new batteries but i am unable to measure the voltage for i do not have anything you show or truly know what to do with it lol. I will keep trying. Many thanks to you and kindest regards. :) Ps. Just had a thought.. if i took out the plastic inner that the batteries go into and then put in AA Batteries would this work? Thank you :)
@@ancientruby7116 if you’re plugged into a different socket is it still as close as possible to the tank as the sender unit may have limited range. Good luck.
@@MikeMakesIt I have a double plug socket so just put it into the other next to it. if i took out the plastic inner case that the AAA batteries go into and then put in AA Batteries in would this work? Thank you :)
Double socket is fine. If the AA’s go in it should be fine but I’ve not tried that so cannot be sure. I’m sure you have the batteries all the same way round and the correct way? Just checking😃
Hmmmm was thinking of buying a dryer and found one of these that's been barely used for way less money. No door on this one ofcourse. Not sure if it will be worth it :(
@@20storiesunder Ours was fine apart from the filter issue and became a pain having to keep it clean. It did dry well though when working.
@@MikeMakesIt Cheers for the answer and the video!
Are the heads on these removable? And if so, can it be put on backwards, like rotate the head 180* therefore making it so you can torque counter clock wise? Would be very helpful for the bike industry.
@@tylerpela5758 on mine they are fixed unfortunately. Thanks for the comments and for watching 😯
Worked perfectly. I heated the tip a little and the end came off in double quick time.
Smashing. I’m pleased you got it going. Thanks for the feedback and for watching 👍🏽
Massive help. I was given a Rexon from a pal, said if I could get it working it was a great tool. I have followed your clip and see that the brushes need replacing. It was mega tricky getting the motor out. I will order new brushes and see if I can fix it but couldn't have got this far without your clip. Heres hoping. Thanks.
Glad it helps. The Rexon is a really good saw and I want to keep mine going as long as I can. The brushes do bind from time to time but I simply pop them out and free them up and it’s good for another year. Thanks for watching👍🏽
You can get to the third filer. On the side wall of the tumble drier there is a little rectangular panel with an arrow and a place to put a screwdriver. Remove that and the two screws that hold the filter in place and you can pull it out to clean it.
Apparently Hotpoint used the same model number on different machines that looked the same apart from access to the third filter. Sadly mine does not have this access panel where as some with the same model number do! Strange but true. Thanks for watching 👍🏽
