Hi, I’m Mike, and welcome to my channel!
I’ve always had a passion for all things electrical and mechanical and enjoy ways of making things better.
There are always a few projects underway in the workshop, most of which I’ll share here. They’ll range from a simple fix or review to a total car make-over. Keep a look out in the background of the videos for tasters of things to come.

Broken Defender 90 TD5, fuel pump issues, WFX000250G
My Defender TD5 let me down. On the way to work. On the M5. I wasn't happy. Basically cutting this long story short the fuel pump sucked up some rubbish in and the 180 litre an hour capacity reduced to zero! I got trailered home and about a month later I'm back on the road. Take a look at the video to see what happened and how I got it fixed.
Below are links to my Google drive describing the fuel pump operation and a list (not complete but the main bits) I used to get me back on the road.

Blocked fuel pump put me on the side of the road... Luckily not a motorway... And you are quite correct, there is another fine filter in the plastic housing, mine was blocked with black slimey stuff.... Every chance it could be cleaned and go again....
@@rustandoil I will certainly strip mine out, clean and keep it in reserve for the next time! Thanks for watching 👍
@MikeMakesIt That's what I said..... It's still on the shelf waiting 😂
I’ll be hoping not to use it but it’ll be there just in case 😂
I had to drop the fuel tank on my 02 Defender 90 Td5 outside over winter two years ago because a pesky rodent had chewed through the high pressure return line, aargh! A couple of things that I would mention: getting the tank out is a real pain, two local garages familiar with Landys refused to do the job! However, when re-installing the tank I put the tank cradle on the OUTSIDE of the mounts so that if I have to drop the tank again for any reason it will be much simpler. I use stainless steel nuts and bolts, washers with ny-loc nuts. Also don’t dispose of the damaged hoses until you’ve got the replacement parts, mine did not come with complete connectors and I had to transfer some pieces. I have seen a product in Lidl called “Anti Marten Spray” which is meant to stop pine martens from chewing electrical cables, etc. Does anybody have any experience with it?
@@JonathanGibbs-fy3tn I had the same issue when I first removed my tank. I did the same as you, all stainless hardware went back in and the tank plate is now bolted below the hangers. So far so good with the mice, no issues so far. Thanks for the comments and for watching 👍
Not that it would have done you any favours but there are dimensions for the cut out in the rear floor to enable the fuel pump to be changed without removing the fuel tank, but then if you had not removed it you would still have a rusty chassis! You did very well in replacing the rear chassis, but I think the lack of tow bar is something you may regret. Chris B.
When I changed the first pump 7 years ago I looked into cutting a hole but it appeared you also had to chop through supports braces so I went the conventional route from underneath for removal. Like you say, I wouldn't have seen the rot with a hole in the top. I do intend to refit the tow bar but I have never used it although it would be a selling point. I probably won't refit the back step though as gave little benefit. Thanks for the comments and for watching 👍🏽

Hi, thanks, much appreciated. It took a while but was well worth it. The exhaust now also has a proper rear hanger! Thanks for the comments and for watching 👍🏽
Thank you for sharing this video and Greetings from Paris ! I have a defender TD5 year 2003. If I up-shift quickly with high RPM from 1st to 2d, or 2d to 3d, I feel a crunch/grind in my hand (not so loud to hear it in the vehicle, I can just feel it with my hand). If I leave the RPM/rev normal, and leave a 1 second pause on Neutral between these gears, all is fine. No crunch when downshifting. The gearbox runs with new MTF94 oil. Is this a normal behavior for a R380 ? Are we supposed to UP shift slowly with these gearboxes, losing momentum ? Losing momentum is not an issue on flat road, but annoying climbing a slope. Many thanks for your help and feedback ! Julien
Hi Julian, yes it is normal for the R380 gear box. Mine does exactly what you describe. When it comes to changing gear I always find that you have to "feed" the box into gear rather than "force" it in. It feels like a two stage thunk thunk as it goes in to gear. That thunk-thunk is the selector fork moving the synchro collar across the baulk ring and on to the teeth of the gear itself. The key is matching the revs to the speed you are trying to change gear. A lot of other people have described exactly the "problem" we have and really it's down to old tech in an older vehicle. I believe you are familiar with this Land Rover forum but here is a link: www.defender2.net/forum/topic88576.html?highlight=r380+crunch Thanks for watching 👍🏽
My fuel pump went on my 1999 Td5 Defender 90 with 130K miles 2 yrs ago. That was the original one. Then in December the same happened to my 2004 Discovery 2 with 160k miles and that was an original pump as far as I know!
@@Knight-Rider01 That’s good service out of those pumps then. I could have bought an after market one but given the work needed to fit it I’d always go for genuine in this case. Thanks for the comments and course for watching 👍🏽
Satisfying asf
How ridiculous not having an access panel! We have Hotpoint NTM1182XBUK which does have the access panel to clean the bottom filter, but that still doesn’t solve your woes. The filter seals are so crap the lint still gets past this to the condenser fins. They’re so tight and delicate that the front bit you can see after removing the filter is impossible to clean properly and there is no way to access the full condenser for cleaning. On older machines the whole condenser unit pulls out for cleaning. I took the whole machine apart to get to them but there are two large sets of condenser fins and the condenser unit all soldered together, so you still can’t get it out to clean it properly. To replace the fins You can only buy the whole base assembly from Hotpoint which is £490 and more expensive than a new machine! It’s 5 years old and I’ll never buy a condenser dryer again.
@@JT-kt1rp Hi, I’ve now moved onto Samsung and so far so good. On the Hotpoint I fully dismantled it one time and hosed down the condenser to clean it. The drier has certainly caused me some pain! Thanks for the comments and of course for watching 👍🏽
Hello mate, do you know how i can put this on silent? Its keep beeping when i touch a button
Let me check.
I don't seem to be able to turn off the bleep on mine when setting it up using the buttons. Using the remote that came with it doesn't produce the noise though on mine.
This Ryobi R18PF Power file is terrible DO NOT BUY! it looks the part & works great. It runs using carbon brushes to conduct electricity in the rotating motor. Carbon brushes are slowly becoming obsolete in favour of brushless motors that use rotating magnets & a sensor which last many years longer than brushed motors. After maybe a few hundred hours of use the carbon brushes wear down to the point that they need replacing & brushes cost maybe £1 each. (usually 2 brushes in a power tool). It's relatively easy to replace them on power tools & a reasonable person would assume this can be done on all power tools! But not the Ryobi R18PF power file! Ryobi have deliberately sealed the metal motor casing permanently closed & for good measure to make damn sure 99.99% of people won't bother trying to cut their way inside to replace the brushes when they wear out, they have even welded a thick metal band around the tubular motor casing to make double sure you can't replace them! This is a form of sabotage so you have to buy a new power tool! Learnt this today & I am not impressed! Not sure whether I will cut the damn thing open with a mini disc cutter on a Dremel as it might take the entire day as a new plate will need making that can be removed, might be better to trash it & buy brushless or a brushed Makita power file!
Hi and thanks for the comments. I'd always buy a brushless piece of kit if available but at the time this wasn't an option for the power file. The cost of a new motor on line in the UK is about £30. Thats about 25% of the cost of a new tools. If I've had years of service from the file I'd probably by a new one rather than buy a new motor. They might even had a brushless version by then! As a DIY'er I'm expecting to get many years service from it as I have had from my other Ryobi kit but do agree being able to change the brushes myself should be relatively painless. I've not opened my file to see if the motor is sealed like yours but if it is I guess it could be down to production costs, ie cheaper to make rather than thwarting easy access to brushes.
Thanks Mike, I have one of these on my wish list but I think M3-M8 will probably cover anything I will need, so I think I'll go for one of the more compact models. As you said there's a wide range of prices so it's a case picking the model that is good enough without being too costly, not always easy to assess !
Hi and thanks for the comments. I think I would have gone for my original tool format due to the increased access ability, and I’ve used it many times where I couldn’t have used the new riv tool but as I had capability to 5mm already it seemed a good idea to up my game to be able to fit 12mm riv nuts! There are a lot of no name tools to choose from and most of the time if it looks good in the picture I’ll try them. At least with Amazon the return procedure is very easy if you don’t like what you bought. Thanks for watching 👍
@@MikeMakesIt Thanks Mike, good to know !
I'm curious that your example is sensitive to only 200 - 1000 volts. The example I have which looks identical and is a model "2AC" is marked "Sensitivity Range 90 - 1000VAC". Can't remember where I bought it, maybe online so maybe actually intended for US market. The reason I sought out your informative video (rather than the 2-minute, tedious box-opening type) was to discover how to remove the batteries. Alas the method you showed has not yet worked for me. So I am wondering whether I need more brute force or I have another variant of the product with a different arrangement. Unlikely I guess, since the design you show with the removable cartridge is clearly the optimal design. Fluke have a good reputation. Anyway , thanks for taking the time to demo the tool.
It is a bit confusing when buying one from Fluke as the numbers are similar. I’ll double check and if I’m wrong I’ll let you know. Thanks for the feedback and of course for watching 👍🏽
@@MikeMakesIt Well, we can only go by what's marked on the barrel, and not a big deal in UK. BTW I got mine apart to check the batteries for corrosion by wearing a pair of grippy gloves. I certainly like the cartridge style battery holder. I've had several slim, aluminium-barrel torches with the screw-cap/drop in style of battery compartment for AA or AAA sizes. Variations in battery diameter over time or maybe swelling due to internal decomposition meant the cell deepest in the tube got stuck. Lesson learned, I have torches which use 18V rechargeables shared with power tools from now on.
Yes, I wan't too bothered about only reading down to 200v as I live in the UK. Also I went for Fluke because of the brand. I have and use Fluke meters and so far I've enjoyed the quality. I always used Duracell batteries but have had a few leak other the last couple of year so need to keep an eye on mine.
Thanks Mike, that looks like a great light, on the pricey side for a bare torch but certainly lots of useful functionality for varied applications ! Ryobi certainly have a good selection of lights and torches, I recently bought the Illuminated magnifier lamp on a good deal after Christmas and it has already proved very useful for splinter removal and detailed painting etc. Being a ring light it also casts a nice even light !
It sure is. I do agree it's not the cheapest light I've bought but for my application it'll be great. I've looked at the Ryobi magnifier perhaps for the same reason as you, only having 2 hands, holding a hand held magnifier in one and trying to remove a split with the other is difficult! Thanks for watching 👍🏽
Why is there a porthole on the transfer box to start off with? Did Land Rover anticipate this gadget or something?
It’s called a a PTO or power take off. Such things as a winch could be attached and driven by the land rovers engine. Land Rover planned this in.

Hi I Know this is an old post but i fitted a tacho exactly as per your instructions and it works great however as you said it is a bit bright, did you add a resister to your light in the end ? If so what did you use please? ( exactly what and how would be appreciated as i know nothing!)
Hi, All I did to reduce the brightness was to add a resistor in series with the cable for the backlight. Unfortunately from memory I don't recall the value. I tried one value, if it was still too bright I increased the value of the resistor. I'm guessing it was around 500 ohms, 1/4watt. I have a cupboard full so it was easy to select one that helped although I selected the value when the engine wasn't running and found when it was the voltage changed in the system (Alternator now working) so the brightness increased a bit but I left it like it was. It's still too bright but I haven't had the time to revisit it. Remember put the resistor in series with the cable going to the back light not power to the tacho or anything else!
Hi many thanks for getting back to me and for the information, I shall start with the resistor you mentioned and go from there .

Hi, Amazon have a couple, the original plastic one at around £7 amzn.to/3Ztqdfj and a good looking metal one at around £23 amzn.to/4ggm4kj
How about cooling the system? It seems on mine iy always lags on seeing the video. Do you know what could cause that or is the system is just slow or internet?
Hi, There is a delay on mine of about a second when watching on a fixed monitor attached to the Swann base unit and possibly more when on 4G. I suspect that's down to a lack of onboard processing power rather thank heat but if yours in a really warm place then the heat may add to the delay.
Absolutely ace helpful - and a good vibe. Thanks im on a 2 oven trad with the oil conversion
Glad it helped! Thanks for the feedback and of course for watching 👍🏽
Well executed Mike, but where did you get the plastic pipe connectors from?
Hi, I could have sworn I put links in for the connectors but I couldn’t find them either. I’ll upload the links to Amazon tomorrow for you. Thanks for watching 👍
1 right angle, 1 straight connectors on Amazon amzn.to/3Zq60qJ or pack of 2 straight connectors amzn.to/4eYV3ku
Great informative video, thank you 👍🏻

Can't beat a sharpie marker. Always keep both a silver and black pen in my pocket.
Agreed, sharpies are great. I always keep one handy. Thanks for watching 👍🏽
Just had this happen on one of my Swann cams after storm bert hit the uk & absolutely battered it. Different model but hopefully it will come apart. Thanks for the video!
@@Chief81 I expect the cameras are very similar. I must say, touch wood, I’ve not had any more issues. Thanks for watching 👍🏽
@ I’ve not had a look yet but sometimes these are sealed units so hopefully not & I’ll do what you did. Tbf these cams are over 5 years old & this is the first time I’ve had any water actually inside them. Driving rain in storms can & will get anywhere.
@@Chief81 indeed. Good luck 😀
Plot twist: There was no silicone, the batteries leaked 😆 Really useful video thanks 👍
Glad it was helpful! Good luck with the fix 👍🏽
great for Rovers that drive for hours under the hot sun, but what sound improvement can you expect with an open engine bay bottom and with wing side vents?
It did make a difference but not a massive one for me.
Thanks for the video. I have had both the SB and more recently the DB models. The single bevel lasted about 2.5 years before I had pick up and the latest model 18 months before pick up. I did exactly what I see in your video i.e a wet stone and I am still considering what to do with latest machine. I had to carry out 2 subsequent strip downs with the SB model as it picked up again . I agree with your comment about keeping the rotary table clean / swarf ingress but having had the problem with my latest machine which has had little use I think that the issue may also be created with its design. The greatest mass is carried on the back of the table and this is where I see the pick up. The slide has to have clearance for it to turn (when I titled the saw head I could get 0.5mm feeler into the gap created at the front) and therefore as the head tends to tilt and lift it is applying the load on a smaller surface area. I think other than the pick up issue the machine is great and good value for money.
Hi Paul, for the money I think the saw is good value. Obviously made down to a cost otherwise perhaps the issue we have may have been made better with a PFTE surface or similar. My Sons saw has also gone the same way as mine did so clearly a point that needs addressing by Evolution.
Looked on mine Was blocked 🚫 up This shorted it
