    When you keep diving just before touchdown you're making your airspeed shoot up, then when you level off you're wondering why you're so floaty, its because you forced the dive too much, increasing your speed and as a result your lift, you'd be better off doing a steeper slower approach with less emphasis on the dive :)

    • @Dani3076
      @Dani3076 3 роки тому +3

      He was on idle thrust well before the dive and the aircraft maintained its speed. If he would come in steeper from the beginning, it would reach much greater speeds. the aircraft just glides too well

    • @Tom_Hadler
      @Tom_Hadler 3 роки тому +12

      Dragonborn2k Agreed. Should establish a proper and stable sink rate beforehand at a speed not too far above stall speed

    • @jpennin1
      @jpennin1 3 роки тому +6

      Yeah. I also feel like he wasn't really following the recommended approach shown at the beginning of the challenge. That approach might have allowed him to be a bit more stabilized so he could better control the descent with throttle instead of pitch. Keep trying, X-Check. I'll give it a try too in a couple weeks! 😁

      @@Dani3076 No not at all, if you watch from 8:00 you can see apart from being slightly off centre the air speed is just above stalling at 70kts where it needs to be and the altitude should ideally be greater at this point. At 8:10 we can observe the air speed has increased significantly to 80kts, this is caused by improper pitch control as X-Check is too concerned with keeping the runway in sight, as he approaches he continues to drop the nose further and further, the angle of *attack* should be greater here which would maintain the 70kts, now the increase in speed may have been caused by updrafts as they're now simulated in this sim. Nonetheless the angle should be much higher. At 8:13 X-Check says okay I need to 'go for the dive', not realizing he was already in enough of a dive at 7° below the artificial horizon and already had a high air speed (this is the most crucial error in the set up as it leads to over speed, if he had held high pitch from here in he might have bled off enough speed to land well), he should still be at 70kts here. He then pulls up slightly almost starting to correct the latent errors, this is all hard to observe as it happens quite quickly and X-Check is off centre which makes the errors harder to spot. This is corrected way too late at 8:17 and should have been spotted sooner, now you will have less aileron authority at low air speeds and you'll get spongey aileron control but if constantly monitored this wouldn't have factored in and the approach would be centred. Btw pitch control here will still be quite responsive due to the prop wash hitting the tailplane, as can be observed at 8:19 when X-Check forces the nose down very abruptly. He does this as he says "we're getting into the 90's I dont like this", not realizing the correlation between pitch and air speed is crucial here. You seem to not understand the fundamentals at play and I don't blame you it can be difficult, but when you dive the plane the air speed will increase, you don't want this when your trying to land, you want to bleed off the speed slowly. If you pause at 8:23 you'll see an over speed along with an erroneous nose down attitude, this would all be corrected with a higher angle of *attack*. Then when the plane is flared it's already above Vr which for this aircraft is approx 85kts. When I say steeper I mean a higher altitude along with a higher angle of *attack*, which would not result in "much greater speeds" but a more controlled descent. All aircrafts glide well when they're well above the required landing speed. I'm sorry kid but you lose this one.

      In flight training a lot of ppl will teach you to put a piece of tape or a mark on your windscreen in the center. That point is to help you keep aimed exactly where you want to touchdown. Then you need to control your decent with your power and your speed with your pitch. 😎👍🙏🙂

    Advice: you can make a short level off to reduce speed. You can also make some turns to loose energy.
    Another technique is to slip or to crab to decrease speed. It decreases very fast this way.
    Just before the dive, reduce to almost idle or idle and keep the minimum speed just by diving it.
    From a real former pilot.
    I've never flown this place but I've done some engine out landing training in mountains area.
    This place is certainly one of the most challenging approach on the planet.

    For anyone else trying this: attempt a short field higher AoA approach. Be just above stall speed. Slip if you find yourself increasing speed on approach.
    Also don’t forget, a stall warning isn’t a stall. A stall warning is letting you know you’re entering the stall. There’s always the buffer and reaction. You can sometimes ride the stall horn the whole way down.
    Finally, when you enter a flare, remember to only leave enough energy for the flare plus a margin.

  • @benedekblackthorn9139
    @benedekblackthorn9139 3 роки тому +14

    It's all about managing your energy during the approach. Stall speed +5 knots, establish a stable descent then focus on your flare after the "dive", finer control movements. Can try to slightly side slip it in the "dive" if you have good rudder pedals.

    One way to reduce altitude without gaining too much speed is to do what is called a forward slip. You do it by crossing the controls (e.g. left rudder, right ailerons), thereby creating substantial drag. As an extra boon, it's a boss move that will impress all your friends.

  • @otterspocket2826
    @otterspocket2826 3 роки тому +3

    We've all been spoilt by previous versions of MSFS, where flaps can be used as speed brakes - they don't introduce nearly the amount of drag we've become accustomed to in real life (I include myself, as a former GA pilot but sim-only for the last 20 years).
    As others have said you need to use a steeper approach, for which you'll need to stabilise it, especially your airspeed, much further out. That final dive makes the flare almost impossible to judge, and combined with the small but critical increase in airspeed you'll always be lucky not to either hammer it in or float half way down the runway. Approaches like this are what minimum descent altitudes are for, and if you're not right on the money by the time you reach it you almost certainly won't have time to 'save it'. I know nobody goes around in a sim, but maybe it's time we all started.
    If the aerodynamics are as accurate as I'm given to believe, that was still some pretty good flying. I expect I'll do a lot worse on this challenge before I manage to 'retrain' myself, remember that flaps are not 'lazy man's speed brakes' and follow my own advice.

  • @CheckSixAviation
    @CheckSixAviation 3 роки тому

    For one of the more challenging airports to fly into, you did very well.
    To bleed off speed, you may want to try a "slip to landing" approach, which is full rudder to either side that is appropriate and opposite aileron. The effect is a higher aerodynamic cross-section of the fuselage to the wind and acts as an air brake. Be careful, though. You will sink faster performing this maneuver.

You need to add a little throttle with each flap increase (to maintain airspeed) Start using FULL flaps. Maintain 65 knots all the way down.

    This is one of the things I love about a sim - you can try stuff you would never do in real life and improve your feel for aerodynamics and the moved masses ... I often fly some place and in the midst of the flight just turn the engine off and see if I can make it to the next airport and how to match up with the speed for best glide ratio to have the maximum choice of airfields or real fields if there isn't any.
    Now that they give you specific points for certain aspects of your landings that looks like a lot of fun choosing tricky airfields like this one.
    The reality may be different but I am sure this sim is the most realistic with good graphics around so far from what I have read and seen.
    When you look at super expensive commercial sims, they look terrible and may not even be so much more realistic anymore when it comes to smaller planes. Hope AMD will soon release their latest GPU generation, then I will instantly build my new machine and give it a try too.

    If you need to "dive" to any noticeable degree after the hill for vis rwy 10, you're doing it wrong. Get your approach speed sorted _before_ final (no higher than Vref) and keep your glideslope steep. Once you touch the ground trust your reverser to slow you down if you need it. If you feel like you're overshooting, don't try to force it--focus more on flaring properly and not bouncing than touching down in the first third. Time spent bouncing is time spent without rolling resistance/brakes/reverser. IIRC for St. Barths the rule of thumb is touchdown before taxiway C which is at around the halfway point.

    Man. It's not about being close to stall the whole approach, is about the proper sink rate / glide slope angle. It doesn't matter if you approach at 60 knots if you're gonna be high and overcompensating in the end.
    You can fly around 90 knots during the approach but with a shallower angle, so, by the time you reduce your power for short final, the speed can bleed off just before the mini-dive. yeah, mini-dive, it doesn't mean you have to dive like a Stuka for touchdown.

    For those players complaining about graphical setting on some other videos. Those players run it below a high graphical setting. You need High or better to take advantage of the game graphical improvements. 4K is the goal to look amazing!

      Unless there is a crab-opposing crosswind, he would actually have to side-slip not simply crab, otherwise he would end up in, um, the terminal building or in the opposing counterpart ;;).

    The problem is seeing over the instrument panel. In FSX, if I remember correctly, you could adjust the seat height so you could see over the panel better. Hopefully, FS2020 has that feature.

    Given how this is scored you shouldn't be diving. The intended target on the runway is the blue square, which is quite far back down the runway, which you should be able to hit with a straight approach.
    Also keep in mind your instruments;
    You're approaching runway 10, which means you can cross-check your heading against the instruments. It should be a heading of roughly 100.
    I don't know if anyone's ever taught you anything about visual landing approaches, but your aircraft has a known landing approach speed, which is your general goal during landings.
    You point the nose at the spot you want the aircraft to touch down. Keep the nose pointed at it, then use your throttle to control speed to keep to the desired target speed.
    How do you know you're on target? The runway will change aspect ratio and move visually as you descend, but if you remain on course, the touchdown point should appear to be stationary no matter where you are on your descent.
    So pick a spot, and basically fly into the ground.
    If your chosen spot seems to not be moving, you're doing it right. If it's drifting, or visually changing, you're not keeping a steady course...

    Maybe try again with a more stable approach , stay low, for airspeed, do not dive but instead release controls a bit and flare less, to avoid ground effect making you float :) thanks for the entertaining content !

    @X-Check can you please do a video explaining the pros and cons of getting MSFS2020 on Steam vs getting it directly from Microsoft? I pre-ordered the box-version, but I see alot of people saying that they're cancelling their order and pre-ordering from Steam instead. I am trying to figure out whether I should do the same but am unfamiliar with the benefits/disadvantages of doing so.

    Why is there a blue marker for the landing point, with points given for that, when surely the sooner you can get down the better. It's a bit silly. It should be more points for an overall shorter landing. And extra points for getting off the runway at the second taxiway.
