Seen a few comments now of "why don't they just land the other way." You always want to land into the wind. The lower your groundspeed (actual speed over the ground) the shorter distance you can land in/more screw-up room you have, etc. If your airspeed is 100 knots, and you have a 50 knot headwind, then in reality you're only doing 50 knots over the ground. If you had a 100 knot headwind, you'd be hovering and landing would be a piece of cake (look up short field/STOL landings for a good time...). The funny part of this video is while these landings are a little hairy, there's not much that's "dangerous" about these landings per se. Pilots do it all the time and all the aircraft in the video are capable of landing on that runway in zero wind conditions. The hardest part for most of the pilots here is just convincing the damn airplane to get on the ground. With all the air over the wings the aircraft just want to keep flying.
Also, landing the other way doesn't give you any room to go around. I bet they always land and take off in this direction no matter what the wind does. If it's blowing the wrong direction and it's blowing too fast, they simply don't land. Fortunately, this airport is in the trade-winds and it's oriented so those trade-winds are blowing the correct direction the vast majority of the time.
Oh, its dangerous. These pilots make it look less dangerous than it is because every one of them is certified to land there - its not any old pilot thats even allowed to try. It doesn’t take much to go wrong (mechanically, meteorologically, or mentally) to turn any landing there into a fatality. No-one skips pre-flights before a trip to St B’s; you really dont want a problem of any sort on that approach.
HangGlideTube Yeah, that works in places like Luckla, but St Barts is not steep enough to slow quickly enough on touchdown. Bit of a difference between a 18 mph stall speed that you can almost run at and a 90 knot one in terms of stopping v crunching :). My one and only upwind hg landing ended up in a collision with a VW beetle; as you say, not for the weekend flyer.
@@operator0 They land on 28 when conditions warrant it, but there are a lot of reasons besides the hill at the west end of the runway that make that the more difficult choice. The traffic circle is about 100' higher than the runway, but it's also the highest land on the approach and you can potentially come straight in from miles away. If you came straight in from the opposite direction your approach would be nearly as steep as the approach to runway 10, but from 3/4 of a mile across the bay at an altitude of 300'. In theory you could have a very flat approach over water from the NE, but the usual approach to 28 comes in over and through the hills to the SE, and commonly starts from the west before making what's essentially a left U-turn. There's a really good video here: ua-cam.com/video/xNIYJWyt79s/v-deo.html
@@PhantomMark it would increase the landing distance. Putting the flaps down drops your stall speed and increases drag. It helps you descend, slow down, and stop shorter on the runway.
I fly it all the time with FSX and the addon from FlyTampa (hands down the best) and I get it right about half the time. It really depends on the plane and the wind. Headwind is actually harder because of the added lift keeps you floating too long. You have to really push the plane into the runway or you'll touch down way too far down and you're doing a go around. Taking off is not bad at all, full power, full flaps and a lot of back pressure

Flown in several times on twin otters. A blast. Then head down to a bar on La Place on St Jean beach and watch the action (planes) with a cocktail.
Nice to see Ross Kemp at 2:20 taking some time off and watching some planes
Most dangerous part of the vid is 2:44 That quadbike is clearly indicating to turn left but turns right. Mad person. Mad!
Amazing pilots !
If i ever had to get a pilot for a private plane, or a airline, i would definitely pick a guy that has landed on this air strip hahaha.
Nice video :)
I’m sure there’s a good reason for this but why don’t they come in from the other side for a less steep approach? Is it because of no go around or wind conditions?
Cuz passengers want to go to the beach first thing it stops. ;)
The wind. You always land and take off into the wind.
It really helps if you have a constant speed prop with negative pitch to help slow down. At least two of those landing were long and without reverse thrust would have risked ending up in the sand at the end.
TALL TRUCKS SHOULD TAKE ANOTHER ROUTE!!
it will be a convertible by the end of it's route
Man the new Flight Simulator looks just mindblowing.
What a place, and what a landing. I hope the habitants are doing well. A Voice In The Desert
I love DHC-6. When I was young it flight Naha between Minamidaito island of Japan. :)
someone please tell me that Van at 2:49 was just an illusion ... I mean its like you driving and saying ..."hey hang on ...need to stop to let this plane go by ... you know ...our cargo box is like a bit high!!!"
Good vid, thanks for sharing and nice camera work btw
The runway is a glide slop itself.
Engineers; "So how steep do you want the landing to be?"
Them: "Yes"
No they were right .... You need a steeper landing curve ... When you're against onward gush of winds on a shorter landing space/ Visibility areas.
The planes will tilt and pilots need to sort of Navigate to get that perfect landing.
Bill still you need to be skilled as it comes to land in that strip
Sekde unlu sekde unlu kelebek kelebek2
Camera?
3:25 did this guy reverse thrust in the air?
Almost. Before they did it in the air.
It’s pretty common, i used to do this a lot while landing in Saba, best way to secure your landing
TWIN OTTERS, BABY! Good old Canadian STOL technology. LOL!
It kinda looked like it... I thought he was going into a hover.
Sweet pearled onions, that's nuts! :-)
0:33
*Wind enters in the chat*
Why dont they land on other side of the runway?
Oooooh wee that looks scary!
This is nuts. I wonder how many pilots touch down and brake and the then scream "never again!"
You know it's bad when ground traffic through an intersection could use a traffic light to let the aircraft pass.
Awesome post.
Thanks. 🍻
Is that yield sign for the plane lol.
Go on vacation to a tropical paradise, just to watch planes land? Wow, that's wild living.
HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT THE ANTONOV AIRPLANE LANDING THERE?
wow..this must be a difficult landing anyway, even without wind..
I don't know how I got here, but what a great airport :D
A nemohli by přistát z druhé strany?
Breathtaking capture! May I feature it in my project with credit? Thank you!
