My sugar glider just had his back foot amputated yesterday because he got it caught and strangulated on a thread in his cage. I’m hoping he can still have a good quality of life.
I know this was 6 years ago, but how did your glider do? Mine had his leg amputated a week ago, and I'm concerned how he'll manage with the others when he's healed enough to be reunited.
One of mine just had his leg amputated. I think he had the nail snagged in something. I was careful to remove anything he could get caught on and there was only fleece that I'd observed didn't snag, but he must have gotten caught in it, or injured by one of the others. Poor thing then tried to hide the injury and ended up entirely chewing his food off because I couldn't get him to the vet when it happened. I knew they self harmed, but I thought it was only when distress and didn't realize they'd chew an entire foot off if was even slightly injured. The vet I had on call stopped seeing gliders, so it took me several days to get someone to see him and I call around to every place within hours of me,. It was also over a weekend, so I couldn't get replies after noon on Saturday. I feel awful for the little guy. I'm told they do okay on three legs, so I'm hoping that's the case, but worried he'll hurt himself when it comes time to reunite him with the others in the big cage.
