just came across this after reading an article in scientific American. As a trainer who values the scientific approach to dog behavior, I sincerely love the research currently going on. On a related note one of my favorite things to do as a trainer is watch my dogs experiment and try to problem solve. it's quite remarkable.

Today my 8 month old puppy did an amazing thing. She wanted an extra treat. She has 2an favorite toys she took one back to the basket (where we put all her toys when cleaning up). She then pick out her monkey (1st favorite) and she laid it on the my computer table in front of my and pushed it toward me with her nose. I understood she was giving me her toy. So I pick it up then she sat down and waited. I quest she was trading her toy for a treat. When I gave her the treat she went about her usual behavior. She has had no type of training that could account for her behavior. What do you make of that???

I think it's clear that dog evolution went along the lines that Dr Ray Coppinger detailed and that's back in the late 90s. Not exactly empirical to not mention that.
