As soon as I saw the plastic container set down on the hot plate I thought, "Houston, we have a problem". 😅
He wants us to be able to see what is happening in the container. The container should be made of glass.

Maybe just a few kernels in there and use a glass container so you can heat it directly on the hot plate without it melting.

or perhaps a metal container instead. it'll provide better heat transfer from the hotplate and cant shatter from being heated by the plate. though i imagine that it will need mold release. a quick google also shows that he is gonna need to get to at least 180c to get any popping
Yes! Maybe a foil container? Something that won't melt and can be torn away if necessary.
My other thought had been to warm the kernels in a low oven first but not long enough to dry them out.
I was thinking similar. It would be nice to see it happen, but go do the dollar store and get the cheapest metal pot you can find knowing you may have to cut it off with a grinder! Do they have a dollar store in England? The quid store?

Nick, please make this a series until you get this to work..please? Try 1. Less corn in same amount of resin 2. Anything else you can think of to try 3. Pop the corn and add that to resin..i really need to see a huge popped corn popcorn bowl😊. * the vase looks great..sunflowers for sure, as someone else stated, would look awesome in that.

You are dealing with the pressure from the resin. The popcorn needs no resistance to pop. I can see in the cross section there are whites on the inside.
Try super hot resin in a small cup. Add a few corn and see what happens…. Don’t put the resin on top. Let the corn do its pop.
You can layer it if they actually pop!

Once the pressure gets high enough and the temperature reaches about 180 degrees Celsius (355 degrees Fahrenheit), the kernel hull bursts and the popcorn is turned inside out. The characteristic popcorn consistency and white-yellowish foamy appearance results from the starch inside the popcorn kernel.
Exactly. Also if the resin itself applies more pressure to the kernel, more heat will be needed to overcome the higher pressure. The resistance of the resin to compression will keep the kernel from popping like it would in air or a light amount of oil. It will need space to expand, or have the energy to push the material out of the way.

Hey Nick, once I tried a 5 minute curing epoxy and added acrylic paint to tint the color. It reacted to the paint and boiled in under 2 minutes with no external heat added. It did start melting the disposable cup I was mixing in. Maybe you could find a super rapid cure epoxy, add warmed corn kernels so it wouldn't drop the temp of the resin too much, and then drop in a little polycrylic (it is clear and you could still see the corn once cured). you might catch the popcorn popping in the flash cure. You'd probably need a plastic rated for hot liquids like some blender pitchers are made of. Anyway, just a thought.
Failure to pop the popcorn but success at making one of the coolest vases I've seen. Another example of how failure breeds success.

Next time, pop some kernels and mix them in with the unpopped corn. The effect would be stunning.
Pre popped popcorn would not withstand the heat. They would just dissolve in the resin. There are some talents in polymer clay here on YT who could actually make fake popcorn which could then be used in resin.
You could brush epoxy to seal coat the popped kernels, let them harden, then add more epoxy.

Honestly didn't expect any popping. Because I would assume that the pressure from the thickening resin, would be enough to overcome the popping of the corn. Would have been so cool if it had though.

1/4 cup of kernels makes 5 cups of popped corn. If it had all popped it would have been like the Blob in the movie only white and fluffy.
I cook 3/4 of a cup in a 7 or 8 quart stockpot I was afraid of what would happen if he did make it work 😂
The vase was probably the ultimate goal as anyone knows the size of 'popped corn' relative to the size of corn kernels.
As for the 'hot plate disaster', I'm sure Nick is intelligent enough to know a hot plate & plastic is not a good combination. But hey, he got people to watch it (again) & comment (again)!

Glad it’s not just me who noticed. I know from other videos Nick feels under real pressure to get new project videos out regularly. I’m guessing he had nothing and rereleased this out of desperation? A shame he’s had to do this to keep his releases recent
Maybe pre-heat the popcorn some first? You're putting basically cold popcorn into the mix, making the temperature change. Popcorn needs a pretty fair amount of heat to pop.

Nick, I am so pleased that you still try things like this. It is always entertaining and gives others ideas to try. Craft fayres could be boring if not for a few 'unusual' vases and bowls. Keep it up, it's so good to watch!
I really think you should look into "Resin Stabilizing" stuff! It uses thinner resins, more pressure cycles, and it takes a LONG time to cure fully (seriously, you can have some cure times in the Months), but the results are worth it. you could take a span of time to set up several items that're suitable to be stabilized (porous) that couldn't be properly encased in standard resin (stuff that normally would fall out of resin on the lathe b/c it makes voids in the resin block).
then you'd have a sort of bank of items that you could just grab and craft at your leisure, and that are unusual in the resin community!

Hey Nick! Yeah, you need to be around 355 F to make the popcorn pop.🤯 It really would be amazing to see it in action. What about making something with "popped" popcorn...a big bowl would be so cool!! You'd have a "popped corn" popcorn bowl for movie night. LOL🤣 Who wouldn't love that!😜You might have to be careful mixing in regular butterfly kernel popcorn so maybe using mushroom popcorn kernels would be the way to go, they're big and round. I LOVE sweet corn! I knew the plastic pot would melt right away. A metal pot with a generous mold release would work. I'd use a small glass insert to use that to put daisies in. Would look cute.

When Ben did this, I remember thinking that maybe it's the viscosity of the resin that keeps the kernels from popping. Or maybe the resin seals the kernels so they *can't* pop. Just a few guesses.🤷🏾♀️
I've read the required temp to pop popcorn is 180 C/356 F. That's why it's usually made on a stove or with a microwave. You'd probably need to sacrifice a metal or glass container for that sort of heat, and no clue how resin would react at such high temps... Cool end result, though!
Or corn taken from the cob on the bottom, then dried corn next and then the popped corn. You could call it corn genesis.

1 - Kernels need to be dry to pop.
2 - Kernels pops at 180°C.

Maybe try putting some kernels in a clear jar...dry...inside another container of resin. I think Ben that as well, but you could certainly scale up the project to see if you get a different result!
popcorn pops at 180-190 C. Also, to get the kernels to pop, they have to be able to release the extremely small but compressed amount of water that is in the center of the kernel.
That is the temp it pops at normal air pressures. With them being in the viscous resin, it would make it harder for the popcorn to pop because the pressure outside the kernel is higher.
Popcorn needs 180-220 degrees C to get it to 'pop'. You are just too cool Nick!

If i remember right, there's a bit of water inside a popcorn kernel (that's why only corn bred for popping can do it) that, once heated to its steam point, "explodes" inside and turns it into what we all know popcorn looks like. Being inside of another medium, unlike just in air alone, doesnt allow that water to become the necessary steam in order for it to pop.

Fun result from an experiment I was skeptical about. Popcorn pops when the pressure inside exceeds the pressure outside. So in the liquid it was a no go

Popcorn pops between 180C-210C, so maybe use PYREX? But keep in mind that once popcorn pops it releases the little bit of stored water as steam and water tends to to leave fractures in resin. Although the end result was not what you wanted, this one still turned out pretty cool! Keep up the wackiness!
Nick, maybe in a glass container put the resin and about 1/4 cup of corn into container at same time, let them warm up together. Heat it up and see how that does. I don't work with resin so please be kind, it is just a thought. I love watching everything you do, keep posting ok.
I don't think the corn will pop in a liquid. It's not in a liquid when popped for eating. I think the liquid, especially resin, which is thick anyway, will not let it pop. But the vase is cool and it's always fun to watch all the different things you try, good or bad. You make us all smile .

I think that putting popcorn in resin will never pop because it compresses the popcorn instead of allowing it to explode. And it has to get very hot to explode. But love watching you. I knew the container was going to melt. lol I thought the second one was going to as well. I love your curiosity and never afraid to try anything. :-) Still would like to see you turn sewing thread that has been cut at different links and swirled throughout the resin. Looking forward to it! I would even like to see it with embroidery thread of different colors. Perhaps you could make it into a magnetic pin holder for a sewer. ;-)
Oh Nick! I was anticipating the oncoming disaster when those kernels popped and totally overflowed the container! When popcorn pops, they double in size. Kinda glad it worked out in the end, though. 😅 Love seeing the happy accidents. ❤

the short curing epoxy will work to pop popcorn. If you heat it and keep it in sunlight during the warm months it will work, not exactly how you want it to though. My first experiments with doing that caused the resin plastic container to liquify and it made massive air bubbles over 10mm wide in the resin and caused it to be extremely brittle - also fully cured in 20min

It's no wonder that your popcorn didn't pop. The kernels need to reach an internal temperature of at least 186 degrees Celsius, but not more than 237 degrees. It will start to burn then.
Also, your container needs to be able to withstand the heat without melting or breaking. Also, not sure if the resin will take that kind of heat either. I would suggest popping the corn first, packing it into the container of your choice, then add the resin. You know what I'm sayin'?

Cool experiment but a few things can be improved. 1 get a glass container, 2 increase the heat. Popcorn pops at about 200°C and I doubt the mixture is hot enough for it to pop it in the resin.

I’m reminded of the warped vinyl in resin you unintentionally created. I already watched the Ben’s Worx video. I really like this vase! I wonder what it would look like if you used “Indian” corn, which is a mix of different colors of kernels. I like sweet corn, but it doesn’t seem to like me very much.

3 if corn takes 4 minutes to pop then get near that time and put the very hot resin on to the nearly popped corn that might work

I would try a slow hardener and just a handful of kernels, I think the resin hardens before enough steam pressure can build in the kernel and pop.

I think the problem isn't just temperature, but pressure.
When popping corn, it's the internal pressure of steam that pops the kernels, and with all that resin around it, the steam isn't providing more pressure than the resin itself is.
One possible way to get around that would be to cast some resin with all the heat properties, but then try letting it set in a vacuum chamber to take the pressure off the kernels, maybe then they could actually pop.
Your result was actually still pretty cool looking, even without popping it.
And, of course, you could always just cheat and pop the corn first!
Temperature for popping corn is 204 - 238C. Your 110 was successful only in popping your container. As another viewer suggested, a glass container might allow you to achieve popping of the corn while preserving your equipment. Still a cool result!
