I always though the center of bowling balls were filled with concrete. But doing some research resulted in this:
"In general, the inner core is made of powdered metal oxides such as calcium or iron oxide mixed with a resin and catalyst to harden the mixture. This is the heaviest part of the ball, and its shape-whether symmetric like a sphere or asymmetric like a lightbulb-influences how the ball rotates down the lane."
*Oh and HUGE thanks for the newly added music/track list!*

@the marble racer How was your use of the word "read" meant to be read? Because your statement can be read two ways.
Did you mean the word "read" to sound like it is used in this sentence: "He planned to read the book..."
OR did you mean it to be read as "He read the book"

The outside cover is resin. The pink core is urethane. That grey bit inside is the weight block, and they are usually some type of denser ceramic. That’s what helps the ball hook. It’s centered on that white dot on the outside, so if you would have turned with that at the very bottom it would have been symmetrical inside. Cheaper balls like this have a smaller weight block, but if you would have had a more expensive one that ceramic could have been ultra hard and a weird shape. Cool project!

Small bowling ball lesson for ya. All bowling balls have a core or weight block on the inside. The coverstock is typically made out of a resin or urethane material. That grey part in the middle is the core or the weight block. Judging by the markings on your ball, you have a symmetrical weight block. The science behind bowling balls are kind of awesome really

  • @Robstalobsta82
    @Robstalobsta82 4 роки тому +28

8:58 I am pretty sure this is a material with a higher or lower density so that the ball is off balance. This helps bowlers to get good spin on the ball and get good curves into the strike zone. :)

Bowling balls are weighted differently depending on its final job. A "lane ball" or "house ball" will probably be used by less experienced people, so they will generally roll pretty straight. A pro's ball, though, may be weighted to have a major curve to it.

A resin coating will also keep the core from contaminating (or being stained by) whatever is stored in the pot.

bowling Balls are made by blending various resins with urethane. Cores are made by adding a heavy substance such as bismuth graphite or barium either to resin, making a very dense type of plastic, or to a ceramic material. The dot on the bowling ball is the pin its how a bowler can get their desired control of the ball down the lanes into the pins

My word, that is a fantastically oversized finneal!
I think the small resin chunk would have come out better - I find that resin like that tends to be a bit too brittle to carve out with carbide, much better to use the skew.
The ball came out looking great - but I think you definitely need to work on getting things thinner! the last couple of things you've turned on this size have been well over an inch thick at the walls. You're a fantastically talented turner, and I'm sure you could get much finer work if you kept at it a bit more.
also, you and I both know - gloves on the lathe??
Looking forward to seeing the next wacky thing you put your seal in. You always give me some really good inspiration. Keep up the good work!

What a fantastic project! I think the pot turned out quite lovely, I love the colours. And I am really happy you didn't make a bowling pin handle for the pot top. This way anyone would be happy to have it in their home instead of it being niche.
    Thanks for the video, Nick.

Man, though....if you’d collaborated with Dukey (Bobby Duke Arts), he could’ve made you one of those crazy carved flames for the finial as it looks a lot like an oil lamp.

Is this how they make the string that is in party poppers?

  •  4 роки тому +1

Another commenter said it reminded them of an apple, and I really like that! If you had cast/carved a stem with leaves for the finial, it would make an absolutely EPIC present/award for a teacher!
I also agree with sealing the inside with just a thin coat of resin, as I have no idea how porous (or not) the inner urethane is.
Regardless, I'm a recent addition to your fan base, and I love everything about your channel - your upbeat, adventurous, and comedic attitude, your beautiful art, and even the educational aspects because you document the whole process. Every video makes me wanna beg the husband to get me a workshop like yours so that I could try and make beautiful art as well! Please keep being you, and doin' your thing!

The "white patch" on the inside is the weight block. For reference, the white dot on the outside is the CG.

i dont understand why most of his bowls are always so shallow in depth.......im mean (at least visualy) it looks as if he could go at least another inch deeper

    • @grendelshooter4556

I agree , he could have hollowed it out until he cut back into the resin again, I saw a guy do it here on UA-cam and his was really deep and when he polished it up you could almost see through it, it was awesome
