    My NAVI's idle issues are still happening even after increasing my idle speed slightly. I will probably take it back to the dealer somewhere around the 300-mile mark to see if we can do the first service early and open a case with Honda regarding the carburetor's issues.
    I'm hoping that my NAVI's issues are isolated and easy to fix. If you own a NAVI, then please leave some comments and let me know if you're experiencing any idle problems or if your bike is working normally. 😉👍
    Time indexes:
    0:00 Cold kickstart on the NAVI in 28°F weather
    3:06 No-choke restart trial after warming up for 3 minutes
    5:00 Rich air/fuel mixture during break-in, adjust at 600-mile service?
    7:55 Restarting on full choke, rear brake set while on center stand
    12:00 Idle settings and CVT/clutch caveats
    13:04 1-mile ride in the freezer to retest the warm idle stumble
    15:45 Returning home and the idle stumble & stalls are still happening

    Never heard of a choke or even a carburetor on a bike. Then again, I’m a noob hence me looking at the Navi 😂
    So do you need to flip that fuel knob every time your about to start, and you stop riding? And whats the purpose of the clutch?

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  Рік тому +8

      Howdy, Matthew! That's why I wanted to do some of these introductory and "caveat" videos about the Navi. It's rare to see a carbureted bike in today's modern fuel-injected world, so new riders probably haven't seen or even considered some of these retro quirks. 😉
      The primary function of the fuel petcock is to shut off the fuel flow to the carburetor's float bowl. The carb has a small valve that allows fuel to flow into the "bowl" and closes automatically as the fuel level rises. Problems can occur when that valve doesn't close completely (due to corrosion, dirt, or other sealing issues), and the carburetor can overflow... dumping fuel all over the ground below the bike.
      The secondary function of the fuel petcock is the "reserve" feature. There are two separate siphons/straws inside the fuel tank: the main pickup for the "on" position sits higher than the "reserve" pickup. The main pickup will starve when your fuel runs low, and the engine will cut out or stall. That's when you flip over to the reserve position so the lower pickup can drain the remaining fuel from the tank.
      A carburetor is also an "open system" that exposes the fuel in the bowl to air, humidity, and atmospheric pressure changes. If you leave the fuel petcock open (in the "on" or "reserve" position), then fuel slowly but surely evaporates from the carburetor's bowl. That means that it's gradually "leaking" out as long as the fuel is on, so you can lose a significant amount of fuel over a few days... particularly in hot climates or if the bike is parked outside in the sun.
      Fuel injection is a closed system that doesn't expose the fuel to any additional atmosphere other than what's in the fuel tank. Modern fuels that have ethanol added to them are hygroscopic/hydrophilic, so they absorb water from the air. Gasoline contaminated with alcohol and water will degrade very quickly (within just a few weeks), creating cement-like deposits in the fuel system.
      That's what kills carburetors and makes the engine not run properly. Those deposits clog up the tiny orifices in the fuel metering jets inside the carburetor, so the air/fuel ratio isn't correct over varying engine RPM's (or, more technically, vacuum levels through the carburetor's venturi). If you want to watch an excellent video on how carburetors work, check out this one from @FortNine : ua-cam.com/video/ZRNfyz1Cgvg/v-deo.html . Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

      @@QuasiMotard wow, thanks for replying, and giving me that info. Would love to see a video where you explain it all (fuel petcock, choke, and the carburetor itself), so that new potential riders like me get that heads up before purchasing.

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  Рік тому

      Ethanol fuels ruin that argument, hands down. It's possible to prevent carburetors from clogging from ethanol deposits, but it's necessary to drain the float bowl and run them dry before storing them for any length of time. --QM

      Thanks for the feedback, and I'm glad that the video helped! The Navi's carburetor problems seem to be hit-or-miss... some owners don't have any problems at all, while others have significant idle and cold-start problems. I still haven't drilled out the welch plug to reset my air/fuel mixture screw, but I'm sure that's all my Navi's carb needs to behave properly. I've been riding a navi for a long time now and the carb issues pop up every now and then and sometimes it's just the fuel knob when I forget to put it into reserve, because mine doesn't have a fuel gauge.
    But I have to mess with the A/F mixture after every 4-5 months because of changes in weather and sometimes within days because of changes in altitude. It runs fine even at -10°C if the carb is adjusted properly.
    The engine misbehaves sometimes at traffic stops and that's how I know it's time to adjust the carb again. And it runs pretty well after that. I take it on 100mile trips and it mostly runs without any issues and seat is comfortable once your ass gets used to and the seat gets used to your ass too.

    Should always try to reduce the choke as quickly as possible, otherwise fuel washes oil from the bore and causes premature wear. Air cooled bikes should also be ridden off as soon as possible especially in warm weather as the cooling does not work evenly on a stationary bike. When I balance the carbs on my gs550 I have a fan running in front of it. Watercooled is much more stable so no need to worry then.

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  2 роки тому +2

      That's a good question! I assume that it would only add $200-250 to the price of the bike. These are very mature engines, and Honda has been using their PGM-FI system on smaller scooters for decades.
      I think this was probably a "new old stock" (NOS) liquidation of Honda's stock inventory from the Latin- American market. Honda's marketing seems to be going for the shock value of the sub-2000$ price tag. Some dealers seem to be marking up the price and adding whatever they want to the MSRP, so it might not be a bargain in some cases. 😉👍 --QM

    Ok. I’m old and this fuel injection is new fangled. It’s on almost everything I own but that’s besides the point. All road legal carburetors now a days are set up to run lean. They need to so they can pass emissions. There is nothing wrong with your Navi. A carburetor is set up to run within certain parameters. That’s how a carb works unlike fuel injection. So if it’s too cold the carb will not work properly until your engine is warmed up. So after you have warmed the engine up for 2-3 minutes, get on it and take it for a ride to clear it’s throat. Your lucky it’s not a 2-stroke or you would already be purchasing a spark plug. Also it has a fuel enricher as opposed to a choke which cuts off air to richen your mixture as opposed to a fuel enricher which adds fuel to richen your mixture. I mention this because as soon as you turn the throttle you over ride the fuel enricher. So please just enjoy your Navi for what it isn’t. Fuel injected.

  • @robedmunds7163

    Normally if it dies when you put the choke off early it is because it is too lean. Could try a hotter grade plug.

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  2 роки тому

      That makes sense, but it doesn't explain a rich or lean mixture problem. Typically, a weak ignition coil or loose spark plug boot will result in misfires, low-RPM hiccups, or loss of power at high-RPM (due to poor spark performance).
      If the plug boot is defective, then replacing the boot with a higher quality one or just replacing the ignition coil/boot combo with a new unit should resolve the issue. Apparently, many of the Navi's have poorly adjusted carburetors or defective seals. These issues seem to be too common and too erratic for simple assembly line glitches... it seems to be manufacturing defects with the carburetors (and could) or other endemic quality control problems. 😉👍 --QM

Would you happen to know about these kinds of things on carbs? Thanks!

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  Рік тому +1

      The idle adjustment screw is usually exposed and not capped over, but the air/fuel adjustment is capped for EPA regulations. If you don't have an exposed idle screw on the side of the carburetor body (usually left side and has a spring beneath the screw head), then you might need to drill out that welch plug to gain access and make adjustments.
      I would recommend waiting until the engine has a few hours of break-in before making any adjustments. Also take notes about how many turns in/out that you make. Work in small increments of 1/8 to 1/4 turn in each direction until you have it running smoothly. Good luck, and congrats on your new scoot! 😉👍 --QM

    Thanks so much for all your videos. I picked up my Navi on Friday The 13th. I live in New Jersey. Been very hard to get this running in cold weather. When it's warming up on the center stand I always hear this weird tapping sound. Sounds likes rocks rolling around. I cannot figure out what the sound is. It only does the sound on the center stand. Anyone hear the same noise?

      Yes, the fuel economy should increase with a leaner fuel mixture. Another channel viewer sent me a message on Discord this morning advising that there is NO mixture screw under that block out plate. I'll need to dig into mine to verify the situation.
      If we don't have an A/F adjustment, then we'll probably be replacing our carburetors with aftermarket units that are adjustable. Converting to fuel injection would be nice, but that's a bigger and more expensive project. 😉👍 --QM

      @QuasiMotard  2 роки тому

      Howdy, Mystx! True, but notice at the end of the video when I pulled it around in the driveway and it STILL died after being ridden for a while. It has been doing that regularly at stop signs and intersections, so it's becoming more than an annoyance at this point.
      I don't seem to have the stalls after about 5 miles of fast/hard riding, but it still stumbles like it's gonna stall. It will be interesting to dig into both the motor and the carburetor to check the settings. I've also seen slack valves and bad spark plug gap cause these issues. The overly-rich smell of the exhaust still points toward an A/F ratio issue. The fix might be as simple as a half-turn on the A/F screw... we'll see! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

    Does it help if you add fuel stabilizer?

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  8 місяців тому

      Adding fuel stabilizers can help for storage and reduce the tendency of the ethanol content to wick water vapor from the air. These cold start issues are common with many carbureted vehicles. My Navi seems to have a misadjusted carb mixture, so that exaggerates the problem.
      Fuel stabilizers only delay the spoiling of the fuel. Using E-0 (ethanol-free) is the better option if it's available in your area. Houston only has a handful of stations that sell E0, and they are so distant that they are impractical (Navi only has a 55-65 mile range). Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  2 роки тому

      Hmm... that's a good point. In the golden days of carbureted bikes, it wasn't uncommon to have bikes set for particular altitude/operating regions. Before all of the stringent emissions laws and the phase-out of carburetors began, the A/F adjustment screw(s) were exposed and easy to adjust... sometimes the single-cylinder bikes even had thumb screws to make on-the-fly adjustments for altitude compensation. The EPA mandates in the early 2000's killed that fun and mandated that the A/F screws have block-out plates to prevent operators from changing the mixture.
      However, Honda still might be setting these for certain regions as they are being shipped out... it's an interesting thought. In any case, I'm at sea level (Houston sits at 80-190 ft ASL), so my NAVI's rich mixture would just get worse at higher altitudes. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

      It's a fun little runaround bike, but the carburetor can be a pain to deal with. I made these videos because there are a lot of new riders shopping the Navi as their first bike, and they might not have experience with old-school tech like carburetors. Most people are accustomed to modern fuel injection... hit the ignition and GO! Carbureted bikes have other considerations like cold starting, choke operation, fuel petcock on/off, etc, etc. Those points are important to consider BEFORE buying just so expectations aren't ruined by reality. • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, you could do that, but the engine will start running poorly within just a few seconds while under load. Most manufacturers caution to NOT run the engine on choke any longer than absolutely necessary to prevent engine wear and potential damage. Overly-rich fuel mixtures can foul the spark plug and dilute the engine oil, which results in unnecessary piston ring and cylinder wear. 👍 --QM

    You do not need lights on in the USA unless you ride at dusk or later. It's no different than a car. You don't even need lights unless you drive at night. It's like plates,tabs,reg and a Driver's license. Unless it is being used for commercial use, you don't need any of that. And the supreme court backed it up in 2019 when stating. Driving is a right not a privilege that can be taken away at someone's whim. So when a judge takes your license, he is taking your right to operate a commercial vehicle only because, he has no authority beyond that. It is also written into every DMV code that I have looked up. Doesn't mean you won't get harassed over it, keep the proper documentation in the vehicle and the harassment should be minimal. Just sayin, not everything is as it seems. Cheers

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  2 роки тому

      Agreed on the legalities to some extent, but DMV and DOT regs are very clear for any new motorcycle sold in the USA for decades now: headlights are required and mandate that there is no OFF switch as in many other countries (our bikes haven't had headlamp on/off switches since the late 70's). I would never ride without headlights on and running high beam anywhere in the USA. That's just a basic safety precaution and common sense in my book. The accident stats speak for themselves. --QM

      @@QuasiMotard Thanks for the reply. Keep in mind DMV and DOT are not law making bodies. There must be a law that backs it up. Alot of things are only perceived to be illegal until challenged. I don't recall if you have used a quad copter for any of your filming but, local police/law enforcement have no authority over someone using one. Only the Federal Police can just like the post office. (Unless they have a written agreement on file for the post office) people tend to assume things. Not saying you are. And I do not disagree with using daylights. But I see no advantage. Nor do I see any statistics on daylight usage being safer. I can very easily argue that it is less safe. Also you mentioned mandated. It only applies if you agree to it. It's the actual definition Of a mandate. Thanks for the Convo . I enjoy your videos and commentary. Cheers

I'm going to wrap some electrical tape around the boots to try to seal it off more and see if the behavior changes.
