Definitely pros and cons like everything else. However, to everyone complaining about it not being priced for the general consumer, it wasn’t meant for you. They specifically say the mount was designed for people who do cqb with night vision professionally. If you don’t fall into that category, then no big deal, get what you want.
I like that you mentioned injuries as being a use case for some people. I’m in that boat with a bad neck. That’s originally why I went to taller mounts. First a KAC old school NV T1 mount and now the Unity mount.
Super excited for this channel, first three video out of the gate have been fantastic. Also there is one other tall mount competing in the night vision height space that comes in just barely shorter than the hydra - the Raidworx RSR comes in at 2.76”.
Excellent information presented in a professional manner. Just the facts that you observed during your T&E of the mount. It's important to know the pros, but more importantly the cons because they never get discussed during the marketing on an item. Just like any other thing in life, when something is gained, whether you realize it or not, there is always going to be something lost as well. As the old saying goes " you want your cake and eat it too." We just have to ensure what we are gaining is more beneficial than what's lost. When purchasing any item, the main question should be "is the juice worth the squeeze"? No doubt this is probably not a mount that is needed by most, but that question ultimately must be answered by the individual user. Like any specialty tool, when its needed, it provides the trained user a capability that will allow them to perform quicker and cleaner work. Also, to gain consistent recoil management with this application, try adding a 3/4 inch check riser to your Magpul stock. Thank you for your time.
I love your channel and love what you’re bringing to the table as far as gun content. I’m not in any way throwing shade as I know tone can come off differently over text. I worked for a company dealing with Cerakote and it does bring the value of items up in regards to durability. If done right, the bonding process it undergoes gives it extreme rust proof capabilities. One of the tests conducted involved an extreme salt bath for a certain amount of hours (I forgot how many), but it equates to 3 years of consistent use every single day. I recall the test had to be cut short because it wasn’t worth going on. Even once the color fades from use, the bond is still in place and acts as a protective layer for the metal (gouges obviously are excluded). One of our local PDs contracted the company to cerakote all of their motorist’s firearms to not have to worry about rust and constant maintenance during the rainy season and it has worked wonderfully for them (they’re now 4-5 years into the first batch of rifles). And one of the last things I recall is their high performance coats (I forgot the exact name but it’s like a micro-slick black) perform very well without oil, will run a decent amount of time without cleaning, and clean up VERY easily when you get to that point. Keep up the solid work and honest review brother!
No offense taken! In my experience cerkote just hasn’t been the best. I’ve got a G45 with 3k rounds on its cerakoted slide and it’s been wearing off pretty quickly. I appreciate the added info!
It should also be noted that your zero distance will change significantly based on your optic height. On my 300Blk MCX, a 36yd zero no longer had the PoI range that I wanted, and I ended up shifting it to a 40 yard zero. Your zero is highly dependent on your setup and ammo of choice in addition to the height of your optic.
To me the biggest draw is that it basically modernizes any rifle with a receiver picatinny rail. M4a1, bullpups, battle rifles, are all now viable night vision guns.
I love them and purchased both the EOTech and Aimpoint models directly from GBRS. I don't see the need to run one on a 16" rifle, but I run my EOTech Hydra on a Q Honey Badger with a 7" barrel and the Aimpoint on a B&T GHM9C with the 4" barrel, the Hydra is the perfect solution for short barreled weapons so you are not side mounting lasers, especially since I already run a SureFire M640V on the right side and then need the left side free to grip the weapon. They are pricey but GBRS are cool guys and its nice to help and support them.
I don't know why people make fun of mounts like these, as long as they are well designed and durable, there's plenty of use cases for such a mount. I'm especially respectful of the use case for persons with injuries or mobility issues. Having once been a shooting coach I came across many a shooter that would have appreciated a mount like this. "Each to their own" is an adage that rings true for me again and again. Just because something isn't for one group of people, doesn't mean that it can't be of use for another group. Great review. Many thanks. Hew
For me personally, I think the problem a good chunk of people take issue with it can be broken down in to 2 camps. Firstly, its really only necessary for a very short PDW style build and under NODs, anything else it is completely unnecessary The second problem is that its very clearly a product that is being sold by a person who told you had a problem you didn't have. DJ created a problem, told people they had that problem, and then sold them a substandard quality VERY expensive chunk of aluminum
What bothers me about the mount is it’s hardly ever used as intended, even by GBRS. It’s meant to free up top rail space on a tiny compact rifle/ PDW not on a 14.5 or 16 inches like we see Mike goober doing
There is no right or wrong way to use something, well maybe wrong but never right. I also run a similar mount like that as well because I have seen my LMT have the LAM shift POI and diving boards aren't new.
This is for those puny rattlers, tiny PCCs etc, I get that point of them and they have a place. But the weirdos running them on 11.5 or longer guns are just paying $400 for points on the internet.
You’ve neglected the fact that most handguards mounted with an IR laser flex when firing and cannot hold zero. The longer the handguard, the more leverage there is to flex. There are a few handguards which are capable of holding true zero, However they’re expensive and bulky. This is a fantastic solution to still maintain a slim, fast setup while having an accurate mount for your laser
I always thought the hydra was a good mount setup for very short barrel setup and needing to get a LAM, WML, pressure pads/switches and other accessories on such a limited rail length of the handguard. It also places the LAM on the upper (for AR and similar setups) where it is much less likely to lose/change it's zero due to handguard flexing.
Funny that some of the knock off mounts on Ali are made out of 7075. I could see the use for it though, and bringing the weight of your LAM more center line instead of on the end of the rifle, especially on a small gun with a can could be really nice. I’m always interested in gear videos, like pc or chest rig setups and personal use cases. I like the philosophy behind the gear and thought process that went into picking what you did.
I've seen images that compare them side by side. The real Hyrdra may lack in a better coating and material, but it's actual pic rail is better built than the fake.
@@chinesemassproductiononly thing the amazon one is missing is a recoil lug where the optic mounts. Other than that it’s almost impossible to tell them apart side by side
My issue with it is I've seen Chinese knockoffs and they seem to have a better finish and machine quality. I can't vouch for the materials but at least on looks the fake looks better.
Only question I wish you had addressed on the rifle you show is - what advantage does it offer on that rifle vs mounting the laser at the 12 o clock at the end of the rail. For that rifle, it looks like you have plenty of space to do that. This would also eliminate the tape switch failure mode.
I think your injury point nails it. All my friends dont understand why I like High Rise optic mounts (personally I run a Unity Riser for my EOTech) and it's literally just that. Years in the army just destroys your body. I get a MUCH faster heads up of my dot because of my neck and back issues and can keep a really good posture behind the rifle and get good hits. Cheek to the stock isnt the best, but it's all relative. If someone tells me "You wont shoot as good if you cant get a good cheek weld!" Well, then my response to that is "Then...you arent training enough." The high rise mounts coming out really to me were a God sent product for my shooting capabilities solely because of my neck injuries and shooting is just so much more pleasant for me because of them
Nice start to UA-cam. You definitely have old school GT vibes. Personally, I am less interested in gear breakdowns and more interested in how individuals are using their gear, philosophies and “why” behind those choices, best use of training/drills for each system (SPR drills vs GPR), and forecasting into the future.
Adding unconventional shooting positions would have been helpful. Like most high mounts they're great for ring and gun upright shooting. As soon as you go prone, junkyard, roll over etc is when the suck will become apparent. This was the biggest downfall of the high LPVO mounts going the way of the Dodoo bird with a bunch of them on the secondary market. Great vid thanks.
It occurs to me you accomplish a very similar set up with a carry handle with a rail on top. Mount laser towards the front then use a standard cowitnes RD mount to push the sight up over the laser. Not sure if it would work but could be worth a try. Probably a good bit heavier, but for a 1/5th or less of the price it would be worth a try.
Pretty cool video. Sure the Hydra gets it's flack but I can see some pros here and there. As for a video idea, how about doing a high course of fire for optic plate adapters on enclosed emitter optics on handguns?
I would like to see your thoughts on the MAWL. I've been running one for a couple of years and still think it's the best combo of performance and ergonomics.

I had very similar opinions on the hydra and inevitably moved away from it. For me it came down to one thing: its purpose built for a purpose other than my own. This is a CQB mount. Can it be used at distance? yes. Is it comfy with NODs and CBRN? yes. But frankly, this is an optic designed to be fired while standing or kneeling. The height of it over exposes your head around cover and is very uncomfortable for long periods of time in the prone. If you're a swat guy where CQB is 99% of your job description, this may be right for you. But its not a general purpose fighting rifle optic. The cons out of the way, my favorite part of it was moving the weight of my laser back toward the rear. It does make a big difference in felt weight. I personally rock the unity 226 with hrf skiff now to get most of the benefits without the downsides.
I run my t2 on a unity fast on top of a unity riser 😂 bringing it to 2.93 I believe. i love it! Although a 2 piece system, they are both made from 7075.
My main question with these, how is running an IR light/laser behind the support hand when it comes to light bloom under nods? Seems like your hand would splash light really bad on anything with a barrel longer than a few inches. Maybe even on an 5.5" rattler setup. Great start to a channel. Keep up the quality content.
I went to basic in 2000. I have corrective lenses, so when you put corrective lenses in a gas mask, you cant squish the lense against a buttstock. Shooting the M16A2 with a gas mask boiled down to tracers. There was no looking through sites. I can see this as a step up.
Everyone is trying to look through their dot with their nvgs. I always found it easier to wear my pvs14 on my left eye and look through the red dot with my right eye and let brain magic work to put the image together.
Something I observed was you were not running a cheek riser. When you run a optic that high it gets to the point you loose a point of contact when firing. GBRS conveniently sells those too.
Nah. I like the extra's. I'll pay the price. Plus, unless you're a professional, you're just playing army. So, if you're just playing army, get a cheap aluminum piece of shit so you can hit the pretend target. Really appreciate the unbiased review and will probably look at the unity with the built in rear sight.
Take this with a grain of salt cuz it might be a one-off thing but I took a course last year and a guy had this on his rifle. We were doing barrier work and he ran up to the barrier and over shot it a little. He hit is PEQ on the barrier and the arm of the Hydra bent. For $500 they could at least use a stronger material for this...
i mounted one of my peqs infront of my red dot on an overbore systems kenu, its 135 dollars holds zero and if youve got a micro red dot then it will easily fit behind a peq15 or a dbal or similiar sized lam
@@perellex most memes came from people who simply didn’t understand the purpose of it. The bashing they deserved was mostly either about them running off with Slade’s design or the choice of materials used. Either way, Slade’s new version looked more compact and more solid.

the height of the mount, reminds me of the height of the M16a1 upper receiver fixed carry handle with a fixed red dot sight attached.
If this guy ever developed a personality this channel would really take off
One of these on a Desert Tech MDR Micron would be so cool.
Not sure. I haven’t tested that with my hand directly in front of the laser. This setup clears your hand completely so it wasn’t an issue.
This video gives me old school garand thumb vibes going from shooting to the black backdrop
Still loving my Midwest Industries NV height micro dot mount. Half the cost of Unity Tactical
Very garand thumb style video. Informative tho!!!
Good info
I wonder if adding GBRS's cheek riser would help with recoil management.
I’ve tried a few and none indexed where my head actually sits on the stock. It’s probably person to person.
Seeing them on the website at $325, that is a lot more palatable than the 5-600 I had been seeing a few months ago.
Still too much in my opinion but they never should’ve been so high in the first place
@@DimDesertNights agreed, 250-275 seems like a good place for it.
Good video
I went to basic in 2000. I have corrective lenses, so when you put corrective lenses in a gas mask, you cant squish the lense against a buttstock. Shooting the M16A2 with a gas mask boiled down to tracers. There was no looking through sites. I can see this as a step up.
That’s most likely it’s use.
Could you do a video on a modernized ak setup? Light laser optic?
It’s possible! I’ve done it in the past, it’s a fun time but definitely not as intuitive as their western counterparts.
Quick question, at what distance did you zero with the Hydra mount? I’m trying to guess with a 5 inch hold over at 5 yards. Thanks, great video!
@J Nie is there a good way to still get strelok in the US?
You forgot to mention the use case of having a chiseled gigachad jawline necessitating a higher mount.
I think it would be nice if GBRS released the mount without the LAM rail.
They did, GBRS Lerna
Everyone is trying to look through their dot with their nvgs. I always found it easier to wear my pvs14 on my left eye and look through the red dot with my right eye and let brain magic work to put the image together.
Great job.
Thanks man
Make a video comparing the raid XE and the NGAL!
Tomorrow
Holy height over bore, Batman
Thank you.
Can I know what attachments you used on your spear?
Reminds me of garand thumb before the channel got gay. Great vids
Show us on this doll where garand thumb touched you…
Yeah I honestly don’t even watch his shit anymore
What safariland holster model are you using??
6360RDS
@@DimDesertNights thanks dude
For the people who are using the Hydra. What’s your zero distance?
Something I observed was you were not running a cheek riser. When you run a optic that high it gets to the point you loose a point of contact when firing. GBRS conveniently sells those too.
Next year we’ll need a mount that’s 8” off the gun. 10 years we’ll go back the other way and get red dots as far below bore axis as possible.
Get one high enough so we can look through the site while shooting from the hip. 😂 God I hope someone makes one just for the meme.
@@Andrew85or haha lmao 💀
Challenge accepted! I got a TIG welder and plenty of useless mounts.
@@joelbellJB It's going to be a thing of beauty, I just know it.
@@Andrew85orlook at the anaconda mount
The Dapper Thumb
This should've come to market at $299.
Has the price dropped that much in 6 months? It's 349.00 on their website
👍
How does the debal d2 fit on the hydra
Some things just shouldn’t be done, that’s one of them
Nah. I like the extra's. I'll pay the price. Plus, unless you're a professional, you're just playing army. So, if you're just playing army, get a cheap aluminum piece of shit so you can hit the pretend target. Really appreciate the unbiased review and will probably look at the unity with the built in rear sight.
Remember kids, a PEQ15 will show the current enemy exactly where you are. Passive aiming will keep you alive since the threat won"t be "terrorists."
These babies might fetch a nice price. I heard GBRS was going out of business due to some cut throat drama.
Is this registered? I don't understand how ppl can still legally use these short beauties w/o atf trouble
What happens if your red dot breaks and you don’t have backup iron sights? Even if it is a cqb rifle wouldn’t you want that as a back up?
That’s what offsets irons are for
Take this with a grain of salt cuz it might be a one-off thing but I took a course last year and a guy had this on his rifle. We were doing barrier work and he ran up to the barrier and over shot it a little. He hit is PEQ on the barrier and the arm of the Hydra bent. For $500 they could at least use a stronger material for this...
Yeouch
i mounted one of my peqs infront of my red dot on an overbore systems kenu, its 135 dollars holds zero and if youve got a micro red dot then it will easily fit behind a peq15 or a dbal or similiar sized lam
I’ve heard that the Amazon ‘airsoft’ is actually nicer and a lot cheaper
Should've done the video with a gas mask on w/ nods
Ripped it from Slade, now Slade is bringing out his own improved version (and patented so gbrs is gonna be sad)
Slade was spared from all the memes about it so maybe it’s a win after all
@@perellex most memes came from people who simply didn’t understand the purpose of it. The bashing they deserved was mostly either about them running off with Slade’s design or the choice of materials used.
Either way, Slade’s new version looked more compact and more solid.
Lmao no. The patent information is very public on the hydra. The patent request was submitted over a year after he left
No Hoplopfheil in the comment section yet? How wierd...
It’s $350 now.
Not a fan of the high mounted set ups whatsoever. Follow up shots and burst fire becomes a challenge for me. Maybe I’m just not trained up on it I suppose. Just not for me.
