I heavily disagree, actually. The only reason Bruno abandoned his family was to PROTECT them, and especially Mirabel. The idea that he would abandon a child is HORRIBLY against what personality we see in the movie. In addition, though he leaves, Bruno cannot bring himself to leave his family, itself, which is where he has stayed. In addition, the whole point of the character is that he is innocent, and a pure soul. To do what he would have to have done that this theory claims, would be horribly against his character. And that utterly blows the theory out of the water.

I feel that if Bruno was actually Alberto's dad, it'd likely be after the events of Encanto. Mainly because no one could leave due to the mountains until the movie's conclusion. Maybe Bruno decided to visit the coast after the mountains opened up, fell in love with a sea monster, and decided to move to Italy to be part of the sea monster's family. Then he wound up seeing a future that drove him to leave. Like, maybe Bruno foresaw his own death and didn't want to freak Alberto out or potentially drag Alberto into danger? The whole "silencio Bruno" thing could've been a phrase Bruno himself made because he still blamed his powers for causing chaos rather than just sensing it.

In Encanto, Lin Manuel Miranda himself said that the Encanto Bruno was originally named Oscar but he asked to change it so he could work it into a song better. Otherwise, it's a fun what if idea.

Unfortunately, Bruno wasn’t ever able to escape the Encanto and says so himself, stating the mountains were too tall. Also, it’s very doubtful that bruno would abandon his son/someone who is just as close as family, cause even when Bruno in Encanto *abandoned* his family he never truly left. Finally, it’s a LOOOOOOONG way from Colombia to Italy so that’s just an extra doubt.

THANK YOU the man lived in the walls because he loved his family and wanted to protect them, but couldn’t bare leaving them (personally I think using the mountains as an excuse was just him trying to downplay his hurt so Mirabel wouldn’t feel more sorry for him) And this guy is trying to convince me that this same man would just leave his kid?? And as you said, Italy and Colombia are so far a part, when would Bruno even be able to travel?? He’s never left the Encanto, and was hiding in Casita’s walls for 10 years and you can’t tell me he started to travel after the events of the movie, why would he do that? He spent so much time just missing his family and longing to reunite with them.

For the first part true. But playing with the idea that the theory is true I feel like Bruno would leave if he had a vision of something terrible happening to Alberto involving him so in order for it to not come true he took himself out of the picture to try and help. Yes it’s still terrible but I feel like that goes along with his character and about how he would do anything if it means helping his family even if it includes actually abandoning them.

I usually agree with you, but Bruno didn't abandon his family. He said he loves his family and that he never left because of that. He only hid himself because everyone blamed him for their futures, instead of realizing he had no control over what it was. He was afraid he was just hurting everyone. He didn't run away to save himself. He ran away to save everyone else.
Honestly I'm really disappointed in this theory. Bruno is obviously a very quirky but sweet guy. He had so much love he didn't even go off to start his own life (outside of this theory), instead he stayed in side the walls patching up the cracks with out anyone even knowing.

In “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”, Dolores says “I can always hear him sort of muttering and mumbling”. I think she knew he was there, but chose not to tell anyone because she understands what it’s like to have an invasive gift like seeing people’s future or hearing literally everything - shown by “it’s a heavy lift with a gift so humbling”. And because of that, Bruno being in the house became a secret she was willing to keep (and something not as extreme as a vision of the family’s magic being destroyed which would be much harder to keep quiet about).

A post I've seen that I really liked, was this person talking about how Dolores likely has an understanding of Bruno no one else has. Everyone can control their powers EXCEPT Dolores and Bruno. Dolores can tune into things, but she just has her super hearing, whereas Bruno can have a vague idea of what he wants to see but he has no control over WHAT he sees. (Where as the other just use their powers, like lifting strong things in Luisa's case or consciously shapeshifting like Camilo.)

I disagree with this theory entirely, simply put, Delores isn't that much of a gossip, she shares a huge and important piece of information with the family; and only answers questions directed to her. Her mom was the main person who insisted not talking about Bruno so she probably learned from an early age to stay quiet about sounds in the walls.

The gifts are given because of the personality of the person receiving the gift and to be a help to the family and the community. I think Delores was always the quiet type who listens more than speaks and as such received a gift that allowed her to hear more. I don't see how giving the gift of hearing to a big gossip would be beneficial to them.

After being literally outlasted and made into a ghost story he still looks after his family just from a distance to help him cope. I don't think Bruno Madrigal and Bruno Scorfano are the same person, for multiple reasons.
    1. Bruno was Originally called Oscar. His name was changed to fit the lyrics "Bruno, no, no ,no". To me that makes it pretty clear that Bruno being Alberto's father is not the intended takeaway.
    2. Bruno himself implies he never left. He never outright says it, but when Mirabel asks why he never left he says "... the mountains around the Encanto are pretty tall". I also always got the feeling that the village was effectively sealed off from the rest of the world, and that they hadn't had any outside contact since the mountains rose.
    3. "I knew he never left I, heard him every day" isn't the only time Dolores has talked about hearing Bruno. In _We Don't Talk About Bruno_ she sings "I can always hear him sort of muttering and mumbling", which outright says she's still hearing Bruno, and that she's always heard him. As to why she keeps his secret, she calls his gift "humbling", so she could feel bad for him having such a pressuring gift, and respect his choice to stay hidden. Also, Dolores is 21, so she would have had her gift for 6 years before Bruno left. She would have already heard the rats and know how much noise they make on their own, and would have noticed a change when Bruno went into the walls. If he'd left for real, she would have heard no change in rat noises and have no reason to suspect anything.
In conclusion, fun theory and cool video (as always), but I don't think it holds up to closer inspection.

To be fair, I think the reason why Dolores spilled the beans so fast was circumstantial. Considering how she hears literally everything, she must have been able to keep some secrets. I think this one was just so earth-shattering that she couldn't keep it in. Plus Mirabel's staring may have actually pressured her to doing it in the first place.

    • @Gingerchalky
      @Gingerchalky 2 роки тому +20

I also think that as well and maybe the reason she spilled that secret so quickly was because it affected her gifts and everyone else in her family who has gifts too. Whereas with Bruno and not mentioning him, she is apparently 21 in the film so wouldn’t been 11? When he left and during the film it’s her parents specifically her mother saying we don’t talk about Bruno. • @markbott7753

Dolores also says in “We don’t talk about Bruno” that she “CAN always hear him muttering and mumbling” not that she COULD or USED to. It also doesn’t look like anyone can come or go from the Encanto with those mountains. Not that it’s impossible but it looks like it wouldn’t be easy in sandals. My other question would be how long would it take him to travel that (almost 6000 miles by plane) distance, and with what money.
Also if he did leave then that takes away from Mirabel’s argument on how much he loves his family and proves the grandma correct that he did indeed leave his family (twice if this theory was true). It would also mean he reunited with one family only to leave his child abandoned on a tiny island, regardless of what would happen in the future.

I think this theory has potencial, but it falls apart pretty easily.
Firstly the encanto is isolated, it's the point of it, an isolated place safe from the war.
Secondly, it's just not how Bruno is caracterized, he values his family's well being above all, so its unlikely he left and even if he did he would never abandon his son (or be mean to him, witch is implied in Luca).
Also the argument that Bruno is an uncomon name is just not true, it may not be in the US, but in places that speak romance languages (spanish, italian, portuguese ...) it's really comon, and a most of the team working in these movies are aware of that.

And as far as we know there’s no technology that would help Bruno climb such steep and smooth mountains. She hears everything, every secret, and every lie. She can keep secrets, and most of the time she does, but important secrets (say she heard some rather horrible things that I won't mention in case it triggers someone) she would tell someone about immediately. Mirabel being part of Bruno's vision of the magic dying is something too important to keep hidden, but she also doesn't want to interrupt Isabella's night so she passes it on to Camilo expecting it to reach Abuela, but not the Guzman's. Only for there to be no way to save Isabella's night so she has to just let it all out.
The reason she doesn't say anything about Bruno is because he doesn't want Abuela to find him, and that's all she knows. She doesn't know he's hiding to protect Mirabel. (also, bringing up Bruno was probably ill-advised considering the whole "We Don't Talk About Bruno" thing)

When Pedro sacrifices himself not only does this create the Casita and the gifts bestowed to each children, but it also creates a wall of mountains that completely surround the village and the nearby area to prevent everyone on the outside from being able to enter and vice-versa, and it isn't until the candle goes out and the miracle is undone that the mountainous border is broken, allowing for passage in and out of the village.

I think the biggest obstacle to this theory is that the town in Encanto was both inescapable and unreachable between c. 1900 and c. 1950, due the unclimbable mountains that surrounds it. Not to mention, Bruno was aware of the danger to Mirabel since 1940. The whole point of the movie was that Bruno **wouldn't** abandon his family. He hid in the walls for 10 years because he **refused** to abandon his family. While I don't subscribe to it, there's an ongoing fan theory that Bruno is Mirabel's biological father simply because we see he cares so deeply for her.
Let's put that all aside. Let's say Bruno did abandon his family and managed to scale the mountain. He makes his way to the Colombian coast. How does he charter a ship? He's been in a small village that hasn't maybe used money in 40 years. Even if he's collected enough old money from a village founded by refugees, the currency of Colombia has changed *five* times since he was a baby. And he decides to go to fascist Italy during WWII? The man who was not married in Catholic village at the age of 40 falls in love with a sea monster lady, has a child, gets widowed, and decides to abandon his preteen son to return to his village, which is, by the way, not on any map, long enough for one of his nieces to assume he's been there the entire time?

While there is plenty of evidence to support Bruno(from Luca) being Alberto’s missing father, I believe the director or one of the writers or something already confirmed that that isn’t the case. That it was just some name that they chose. I also spoke to an Italian person who suggested he could’ve misheard the word “bruco” which is “caterpillar” and in Italy they have a saying about a caterpillar in your head being annoying or something(it’s been a while since that conversation so I may be remembering things wrong.) I personally like the idea of him just having heard a couple of fishermen arguing and taking that phrase and making a whole thing out of it.
Besides, Bruno leaving his tower was not him abandoning his family, he left because he was tired of being blamed for bad things happening that were out of his control. I find it very difficult to believe he would leave his own child especially in another country across the ocean. I’d be more inclined to believe he met a sea monster in the river near the Encanto and she left before he could ever find out she was pregnant and SHE left him alone in Italy… but that’s not Alberto’s story of course, he never mentions his mother.
Also… Bruno isn’t an uncommon name. Maybe for English countries, sure, but Italy and Colombia??? It’s fairly common. Pretty sure everyone living in either country knows at least ONE person named Bruno or knows someone who knows someone named Bruno.

Ok but I thought no one could come in or out of the village up until Casita “dies” and breaks the mountain range surrounding them. It was my understanding that Maribel was the first person to leave the village in 50 years. Which would explain why Bruno never left. After Maribel’s ceremony he would have tried to get as far away as possible but once he realized he CANT leave the village he would have come back to the one place he knew he could stay hidden; Casita. Plus, family is the most important thing to Bruno. It’s the reason he goes into hiding; to “protect” them. He would have never ABANDONED a family member on an island all alone. I'm sorry, but it's too far fetched for me. It sort of sounds plausible when you ignore a whole lot of facts and circumstances in-universe and real-universe, but I think the writers were just having a little bit of fun and throwing easter eggs around. Bruno also sings about "Let it go" - does that mean he has a connection to Elsa? Probably not. Also in the TinkerBell series "The secret of the wings", which came out in 2012, Fairy Mary also says "Let it go" in connection to baskets made for carrying snowflakes. I always interpreted it as said above, since Frozen came out in 2013, so back then it seems sort of like an inside joke between the writers. So after Frozen came out and people (re-)watched TinkerBell, people would immediately think about Elsa, without necessarily realising that this movie came out before Frozen.

Nah. Bruno left to protect his family, and even then he couldn't bring himself to go far. Plus *he* says he didn't leave because "the mountains around the Encanto are pretty high". I think Dolores just respected that he had a reason for hiding out in the walls. Either that or she is more afraid of either Bruno or her abuela than she is of Mirabel (Bruno because of what people, read her brother Camilo, have to say about him. Her abuela because she was angry about him leaving.). Real talk... Bruno wouldn't leave his kid.
I have a better, more wholesome theory for you. Julieta also knew that Bruno was hiding in the walls. Allow me to explain.
Julieta, understandably, seems to be in charge of food preparation. This is important, because she knows the kitchen, and she would be on top of grocery shopping, etc. If Bruno was there, acquiring "free food" as we know he is, for *10 years*, there is no way she wouldn't notice the food going missing. Combine that with the fact that it starts right after he disappeared... it's not hard to put the pieces together.
But wait! There's more! I don't think she just knows he's there. She is also intentionally making extra food so that there is always enough for him to eat. Firstly, Julieta doesn't have the same animosity that the town and even the rest of the family seem to have for him. She never refuses to talk about him like the others, and when she does talk about him she is sad. It's clear that she misses him. But that alone doesn't prove anything, so... we actually see her make more food than necessary in the movie! The apres de quesos that she makes when Mirabel hurts her hand? She makes three. The only one we see being eaten is Mirabel's, but Julieta may have had one too. Either way, she made more then what was needed. The icing on the theory cake? Guess what Bruno is eating when we see him later in the film. That's right. Apres de queso.
Julieta is secretly taking care of her brother.

As far as her surprise... I have a couple of thoughts. 1) If you didn't see someone for 10 years, even if you knew they were close, wouldn't you be surprised? I see people at the grocery store after seeing them a half hour before and get surprised by it. 😆 2) He has been living in the walls for 10 years, so he hasn't exactly been keeping up with himself, plus aging. My thoughts about Dolores knowing Bruno was there the entire time is that she is such a gossip about 'other' things so that she can keep quite about the really important stuff, like Bruno. With all that she hears, there are probably lots of things that happen that really shouldn't be revealed to the entire town, so to help cope with knowing all these secrets, she talks about anything else. Knowing the fact that they were going to discuss it later and just not at the dinner, as well as the fact that she probably didn't want the proposal to go super well because of her own feelings, I believe she felt safe blurting that out for the family to hear right away rather than keeping it in.

Another point to be made, is the fact that there's no door for Alberto, not even a blank one for him to reclame in case he comes back. It is stated, in the wiki, that she knows everyone's dirt but does NOT appear to be much of a gossip. I think the house loosing its magic just freaked her out which is why she spilled. I think even she knows that she can't understand rats, she just said "rats" as a cover for Bruno because she kept him there as a secret. And why would she tell everyone else? Its obvious he left for a reason and literally everyone was saying he's a bad person. She was quite literally the only person defending him in the song. 2.) Bruno himself stated that he knew his gift wasn't helping his family but he could never leave them which leads to #3. Bruno would never leave his child like that. He cares about family to much and to leave his own son is not something he'd do.

I think the gossiping at the almost-proposal dinner was to prevent the proposal, as she was in love with Mariano, and she had something big that could stop it. I think Dolores knows SO MUCH stuff, and actually keeps a lot of stuff a secret-including Bruno being in the walls. If she can hear poetry across town, especially just that he's writing it, not performing, she must know everything that's happening around town. I also think it comes down to wanting to protect the family. She wants to protect Bruno, and telling her family, especially Abuela, that he's still there, might cause him to be thrown out. She might even be helping feed him.

It's interesting, but ultimately goes against Bruno's character. The reason he is living in the walls is because he couldn't bear to leave his family, and the reason he left in the first place is to protect his family! So the idea of him abandoning his son doesn't feel right AT ALL.

Can't all be winners. Bruno never left his family, blocked off by the moutains even if he wanted to and even then this takes place in the Colombian mountains. Not Italy.

You question why Alberto uses the name Scorfano instead of Madrigal, but there is some evidence to suggest that in sea monster cultures, it's the husband who takes the wife's name. Luca's grandmother is listed in the credits as "grandma Paguro" but Daniela calls her "mom."

As soon as I saw this character was named Bruno, I used my gift of seeing the future to know that you guys would put out this theory haha. That being said, I gotta agree with the rest of the commenters, it's way too out of character for Bruno to abandon a family member, or even leave the house (it's important to the story's message that Bruno loves the family so much that he wants to stay with them, he just feels his gift wasn't good enough and he was hurting the family instead "My gift wasn't helping the family but I love my family you know?", and to protect Mirabel), and the majority of this evidence feels like a stretch or something that was misunderstood. Also, I have no doubt Dolores could actually hear him, even in the "We Don't Talk About Bruno" number, she says "I can always hear him sort of muttering and mumbling", which I take to be literal and in the present, and then right after shows that she understands the pain he went through having his visions misunderstood and bad things always being blamed on him (since you guys like Pokemon too, think Absol, the Pokemon that can predict disasters and then ends up getting blamed for them). Through that small set of lines she has in that song, it's clear to me that she knows the family would be unfairly cruel to him if he were to be revealed, so why would she out him?

I don’t like this theory at all. Bruno is shown throughout the movie to deeply care about his family. From the fact he made himself a place/plate at the dinner table behind the wall, to the fact that he straight up hid himself away rather than tell Abeula his vision of Mirabel to protect her, it shows he loves his family to his core. I could never picture him leaving his family home and country only to leave his second family as well. That just seems totally unlike Bruno to me.
(Also the whole company thing of Encanto being Disney and Luca being Pixar. As well as Lin Manuel Maranda changing his name because of a song.)

I’ve been saying this forever and thought I was the only one who thought this! I’ve been trying to persuade my grandmother for weeks now.
More factual evidence- Columbia broke away from Spain in 1810. After that a TON of Italians moved to Columbia.
So my theory is that Abeula’s parents or grandparents left Italy and moved to Columbia. And Bruno knew this so when he “left” he wanted to see if he could find any of his family over there. And he got some chick pregnant.
My theory on Alberto though is a bit different. I think Alberto’s gift was to turn into a sea monster. When his mom found out about this, she left because it scared her and that’s why the entire town know about the sea monsters and want to hunt them. Because she told them sea monsters exist.

honestly, as an older sister, to me, that line felt more like "I told you so". Specifically because she is such a gossip girl If she did hear him (and I mean...) she probably told someone (most likely Camilo) and got the same answer Mirabel did. I think that because of the song 'We don't talk about Bruno' the entire time she sings it feels off compared to the rest of her family like she is trying to tell Mirabel something (she literally starts by shushing Mirabel and "acting along").
Another counterpoint: Bruno himself confirms he never left the house when he tells Mirabel that the mountains are too high. It would be interesting, but there are just too many things that don't cooperate when I'm looking at the story as a whole.

Let's start with Luca is Pixar and Encanto is Disney. Then we can go on to how would Bruno have gotten to Italy when he couldn't leave the Encanto. And as many people have already pointed out, Bruno loves his family. He never left his family there's no way he'd leave his own son. Dolores straight up says that she always hears him muttering and stumbling. It's possible that she just knew better than to bring it up because "we don't talk about Bruno." It's be clearly indoctrinated in her that Tiò Bruno is a topic that is off limits, we see how upset Pepa gets just at the mention of her brother's name. This leads me to doubt that she'd ever bring up the possibility that Bruno is hiding within the walls of Casita. I don't agree with this theory and frankly I find it a bit disheartening not to let such a beautiful story stand on its on. There's no reason at all it needed to be connected to any other movie for any reason other than perhaps trying to see how it plays into the new Disney Renaissance.
