It isn't just that antimatter has regular mass. They recently managed to create enough of it to drop it and check experimentally if it falls down or up. It falls down. The experiment didn't show the same value for gravity as ordinary matter, but that's very likely just a margin of error issue.

But, positive mass would be *repelled* by negative mass, meaning if you had a negative and positive mass of the same value, they'ed be that one troll physics engine of a magnet pulling a car forward, continually accelerating to infinitum.
Ohyeah, that actually reminds me that someone wrote an SCP that was a negative mass. As in it was a -1/2kg or so weight for use on old-fashioned balance scales. And it was really difficult to deal with because of how all forces applied to it applied negatively, which, because of air resistance, had a terrifying potential of an infinite runaway.

Einstein's math allows for negative mass. It's the main reason theories about white holes and anti-universes exist. With math, however, you aren't constrained by the laws of physics in the same way we are. The equations work with both positive and negative values. This proves that anti-gravity can mathematically exist, but it's likely not something that can exist in practice. It's the same thing with Einstein-Rosen Bridges (Wormholes). They can exist mathematically, but likely not in practice. At least not for long enough to actually utilize them, since they collapse before even light can get through fully. But we used to think black holes were impossible despite the math allowing it, so who knows what's really out there?
To be fair to him. When you're looking at a quick, nimble planetary exploration vehicle the things that fly around the void of space blowing up massive warships aren't what you think of.
Been watching the horror content on the channel for years and I never thought I'd see a video of a theory about applying Starwars tech to irl tech and I'm not disappointed either as a Starwars fan this makes me happy
In the novel The Martian (hard science fiction book where an Astronaut is stranded on Mars) they talk about ion engines. Ion engines took the crew to Mars and back. It’s just not commonly used because of the potential NUCLEAR RADIATION.
Negative mass is actually a thing. On a quantum level, small amounts of negative and positive mass are constantly spontaneously appearing and then negating each other. If we had a way to isolate a large enough amount of negative mass from positive mass, so they don't negate each other, we could, in fact, have a negative gravity body. For the superconductor solution, you just need one powerful enough to use the planet's magnetic field.
and an example on the macro scale also possibly exist if Einstien is correct about "White Holes" According to current theoretical understanding, white holes are often described as having a concept of "negative mass" because, while they are mathematically derived from the same equations as black holes, they essentially function in the opposite way, with matter seemingly "ejected" from them, giving the impression of a negative mass source; however, the concept of negative mass itself is highly theoretical and not definitively proven in physics.
Though there are all sorts of theoretical issues with both of those if put into "practical applications" like how a superconductor on that level could very well disrupt the Earth's magnetic field.
Negative mass is not a physical phenomenon, though. It's a mathematical artifact: You can (theoretically) arrange mass and energy in a way that causes a particular region of space to behave AS IF it had negative mass, but that doesn't mean it actually does -- the system as a whole is still quite distinctly positive. It breaks down as soon as you do something with it.
What you are describing is antimatter, not negative mass. Antimatter does form naturally, but, once it comes into contact with matter, it is obliterated. Negative mass is a property, not a particle. And, no, we have never seen it occur anywhere in the universe, naturally or otherwise.
13:36 a slight nitpick around the wording is that ultrasonic waves still affect the ears. If you blast ultrasonic sounds, you can still damage your eardrums like with acoustic waves within the audible range, you just won’t ‘hear’ the damage you’re doing. When self-administering a hearing test, they have a warning that, when you have difficulty hearing a frequency, not to turn up the volume just to make sure that you actually can or cannot hear that frequency. Even if you can’t perceive the acoustic wave at that frequency, the physical forces still apply so I feel that the wording implying that ‘sounds’ you can’t ‘hear’ won’t affect your ears seems mistaken. Tl;dr: nitpick around wording about ultrasonic acoustics and effects on your ears
Ion propulsion is not suitable for this at all. The mass flow rate of such engines is far too low to be able to bridge the gap to the 650 Newtons of force you said is needed to lift a person. The reason NASA uses them for long distance travel in space is because they are more efficient over such distances than traditional chemical engines.
Shhh let them over think it, my theory is that it uses the ground effect, it would have to rely on something else to keep it up when not moving but when it gets up to speed it can easily hover

When we getting the pressure theory video? You made a video on it on GT Live, Albeit it is GT Live so that's kind of the point, but really when we getting one? It would be awesome!
Funny. As a teenager in middle school, I actually did write a project about using magnets to make hoverboard like transportation with the Bullet trains in Japan as the reference. I also saw a lot of the downsides from the large amount of magnets needed as well as the possible problems that comes from how much metal we humans use.
Superconductors actually repel any materials (except the ones they attract) if they're powerful enough. Scientists have levitated a frog. So all the futuristic technology we need is more powerful, and preferably room temperature, superconductors.
A repulsorlift would make more sense if it were a small warp engine that made its own gravitational field that would effectively pull itself upward at the same rate of acceleration as the planet or moon one is riding on, not negating mass, but negating how mass would accelerate towards other masses. You would still have to account for inertia and changes in elevation, but considering it's technology so commonplace as to be recreationally used for chairs in a setting with all manner of droids with various programs for a multitude of functions, it shouldn't be too far-fetched.
The answer is definitely not ion propulsion. Ion propulsion is super efficient but is super weak. It works in space because there's no air to collide with.
