    1. Massimo didn’t have a tragic backstory for his arm. He was simply born that way.

Throughout the movie, Alberto doesn’t want to admit it when he misunderstands or doesn’t know about something. But at the end of the movie, (16:49) He says his greeting and does his handshake, Luca asks him again what does it mean, but this time responds with “No idea, go find out for me will ya?” He’s no longer afraid to admit that he doesn’t know what it means and accepts admitting it.

One of the most heartbreaking scenes from this movie is Luca’s betrayal of Alberto. When Alberto left, he didn’t even try to dodge the harpoons being thrown at him. It’s almost like he didn’t care if they hit him. And when Luca found him, he didn’t lash out at Luca. He really felt that he was the cause.
That’s what made the ending so much better. When they had to part, he assured Luca that he was okay because he hadn’t been while living on that island. He was alone.

Except he had been trying to expose Luca just seconds before--it's not as selfless as you interpreted it. Alberto wanting to expose Luca (basically to keep him for himself) was selfish. Getting it turned back on himself is a little bit karmic, even if he is clearly hurt and saddened by it.

You can tell he didn’t want to leave Luca - he was reluctant to swim away and kept looking back, only eventually leaving because ercole was trying to kill him. He didn’t even bother trying to dodge the harpoons - showing he was in a dark enough emotional state to just give up on the self preservation instincts he had left

They even got down Alberto's mannerisms to contrast with Luca's politeness, you can constantly see him picking at his nose and ears. The realistic skin detail impressed me too. Luca's got the pale skin and reddened features with freckles, so he's barely seen the sun. Alberto's very tan, showing he's spent a lot more time on the surface. Yes! I love the fact that it doesn't go along the trope of "the parents are divorced and it's a horrible thing and the kid is really sad about it" because that isn't always the reality. Yes, it can be a very hard thing to go through, especially if you are old enough to understand the implications about it, but sometimes it ends up just being a good thing. One of my closest friends travels in between houses, but she's perfectly happy with how it is. Her mom and dad are still friends, just not together romantically, and it works out for all of them! Actually, now that I think about it, I have two friends like this, where the parents who got divorced are still friends and regularly talk and see each other. It doesn't always end in tragedy or the parents "coming to their senses and realizing that they actually don't want a divorce." I love this movie for addressing that :)

Luca becoming so good at bicycle riding so quickly because he's spent his life underwater, which is denser than air giving him stronger leg muscles than a human,
The slight Aardman look to the art style (Pixaardman)
Also, if Luca's Grandmother has been regularly sneaking up to the surface, does that mean she's friends with the two old ladies? I like a lot of others like to view this movie through an lgbt lens. Even if it wasn’t intentional it’s still there and that makes the movie even more powerful to me. I mean… Alberto literally outs himself, tries to out Luca and then Luca keeps his true self concealed to avoid the negative outcome. It’s a similar reading you can give to the little mermaid both the Disney version and the original Hans Christian Andersen story.

I mean, if I remember correctly the directors said that they deliberately wrote the movie in such a way that you either could see it as LGBTQ+ themed, or just as some kids becoming friends and going to explore a whole new world. • @regularly_priced
      @regularly_priced 2 роки тому +120

I think it was intentional… I don’t know how you could watch it without thinking for a moment “are they gay?” To me the allegory is incredibly obvious, especially if you consider what Luca’s grandmother said at the end(“not everyone will accept him, but some people will, and he knows how to find the good ones”), as well as how both boys turned into sea monsters in the ending scene as if they’re “exposing who they really are”

After two viewings, Luca became my favorite Pixar movie (I’ve now seen it over 20 times). The way the characters were written and portrayed as well as the themes and messages really spoke to me.
For example, Giulia’s family situation (split family and feeling like an outsider in a different city when going to visit your other parent) and how it was treated by not making it a big deal like it is in so many pieces of media. This is something I’ve basically been dealing with for my entire life and it felt nice to have it be recognized that not all families are perfect but that just because they’re not doesn’t mean they can’t work.
Luca’s curiosity and drive to learn more about the world around him also really resonated with me. And I see him in the end going to stay in the human world while balancing and accepting his differences as a loose metaphor for immigration. My mom and dad are German immigrants to the U.S and my step mom is a Colombian immigrant and they all still have lots of family in their respective countries. While I’m in the U.S and have to figure how to balance my cultural heritage and family with the ideas and culture of where I live.
I was also kind of the outsider/weird kid in school too and the trio friendship setup is almost the same with the friends I had in grade school (and still friends to this day) so it was nice to remember that.
The movie’s way of portraying acceptance and talking about it also helped me to do some introspection of myself and helped me to acknowledge and accept the fact that I’m asexual.
Luca may be a simple movie plot wise but the profound way it has affected me and the time it’s come at the end of a major cycle of personal growth (graduating high school, starting college, reconnecting with my mom’s side of the family and restoring a line of communication that had been broken for almost 15 years, losing several friends and family members, surviving a pandemic) has solidified it as one of my favorite movies of all time.

That ending shot of the island they were on, having the sun’s rays part the clouds while it’s raining is such an amazing shot, and really gives a sense of closure. Especially how it went full circle and called back to the island in the latter half of the movie. Such a beautiful looking movie, plus the score is just unbelievable. Never had I heard a score that fit a movie so perfectly.

I kinda interpreted them riding the Vespa on the island as a metaphor for their friendship and a form of foreshadowing
They had to ride the Vespa together to get down the hill and fly through the air, but then split apart so they don’t crash into the rocks
Just like how they had to be together to go to Portorosso but split apart at the end

The absolute grip this film had on me the summer it came out was insane. Very few Pixar films really get a hold of me on the first viewing like Luca did, especially since I’m getting a bit older. Usually I stick to the older Pixar films or the ones that came out when I was younger, maybe giving the newer ones a chance but not getting super into them, but Luca was so cute it really got me hooked for a solid few months

I don't know what this movie did to me. Ever since i watched it the first time, I've been obsessed. It's refreshing and nolstalgic. It feels so familiar, but also forgien because I thought it was way more open with the culture and the (most likely romanticized) time period it was portraying than most movies. It always has me crying like a little baby at the end. I love that it isn't a big plot, something small can be super refreshing in a world where people think you need a big complicated story to be successful.
Also: Lee is very big dad energy. First in personality, and now even more so because I know what he looks like.

I’m going to say right now that Pixar has never really manage to make me cry. It has made me feel very sentimental and sad but not enough for me to cry. Luca, however, was a completely different story. It was the very first Pixar movie I cried to. I guess it kinda hits home for me because I just recently moved and left behind family, friends, especially my best friend. The ending really struck me. It was both beautiful and sad. It’s even more sad when you realize that Alberto practically lost everything. He lost his father, he lost his family, he was lonely and he probably lost his dignity too when Luca betrayed him. However, at the end, Alberto’s final decision to let Luca go was a character development, as he didn’t want to harbor Luca anymore. He knew that although he had the Vespa he always dreamed of, Luca’s happiness was where his heart was. If his friend was happy, then so was he. Simple but very powerful to say the least. Can’t wait to see more of Alberto with the upcoming short film. CinemaWins you’re one awesome UA-camr. Thanks for the video!! ❤️

So about the Italian translations of writing. Since you can’t expect everyone to know English and when the words are on screen for very little time it can be hard to understand even for people who know the language. Add to that the fact that it’s a movie for children who haven’t even started studying.
So for almost every movie they digitally translate the plot important writings, if they are not translated then they add subtitles

My family was watching this movie as I was packing. When I was done I came into the TV room and sat with them as the final scenes played out. At the moment the ending arrives, with that final crescendo as Luca's train departs, I realized that I also do not know if they will see me again. We all then walked to kitchen by the exit and exchanged long hugs. I am not one to cry easily but seeing my siblings and mother cry like that stunned me. I tried to to hold my tears but as soon as I entered the car and started to drive out of the garage my little nephew walked out and waved me goodbye alongside the others....the music that starts at 16:57 started to blast in my head...I have never cried so much in my life.
