How to set TDC on 4 cylinder engine

I used this method with the marks to get TDC on my 2AR-FE When doing the head gasket. Works like a charm.

Except for the fact each piston reaches top dead center 2 times per cycle,once during exhaust stroke and once during compression stroke.you must have got lucky,kuz true TDC happens during compression stroke;thats the tdc you want.

Thank you Peter. Very helpful. I don't think I would attempt this repair. I'm still trying to find a shade tree to work under. Just oil changes for me on my 09 Forester. (Leaky I might add. Front differental always ses to seep fluid:(.

Generally it is the same procedure for Toyota engines to be able to check for tdc this way. All have marks.

What if 4 is slightly lower than 1 but mark is lined at 0 and the cam marks 12 and 2?

No but don't listen to the die each person reaches top dead center two times, one screen is not broke and one screen compression stroke do you want top dead center on compression stroke not exhaust
