    Thanks for your gear review, very interesting. Can't wait to see the final video of the trek !
    How was it to shoot everything on the 20mm ? Not too restrictive frame wize ?
    How was it regarding your memory ? Did you managed to keep everything in only one SD card ? :P
    For the lens, if you have a little bit more money I'd suggest your to try the new Sony 16-35 f4 PZ, lighter, zoom and not a lot bigger than your 20 (I have both) It's a perfect companion for hiker-vieographer. The only drawback would be the F4. But on a full frame camera it's still enough to have subject separation.
    Also, regarding your mic issues, you could try the sony ecm b1m or b10. You won't need a jack cable as it plug directly to the hot shoe ! It's a real time saver and you won't have a cable hanging on the side that can catch every single branch that will cross your path !
    cheers

      Hi Kevin, thanks for your message !
      Well 20mm forced me to be creative, but as I was shooting mostly outdoors in large environments, or interviews up close, it was quite easy. And the wide angle assured me that I always had what I wanted in the shot anyway. To be fair I bought it thinking it would be smaller than it was, but got used to it. If I could have a zoom like the one you mentioned on another project I would though, just need to find the money :D Actually that 16-35 came out right before my trek and got me thinking, but I already pulled the plug on the 20 and couldn’t go back anyway.
      The SD cards were quite a mess! Initial idea was to send through dropbox every week my footage to an editor, but it didn’t work that way AT ALL. I had 3*128GB cards, two sony tough and another one similar, and actually didn’t need a lot more. I was scarce with shooting, and could upload at some points my content on my dropbox so always had at least and empty SD card ready ahead, each could shoot 3 hours at 4K. So very decent !
      As for the mic I saw the sony one but it lacked the feature I needed the Rode for : podcasting on my phone. The versatility of the Rode and its incredible audio quality and capacity to deliver even at ranges, made it a no brainer for me. I would definitely do it again despite the relative fragility (gear isn’t supposed to be carried on a shoulder for so long in any condition :D ). I could tape the cable or find a sleeker solution for it I’m sure 😊

    Hi! Thank you for all this information, I'm planning to hike the Hexatrek upcoming summer. I just had a quick question regarding gear: what is the cellservice like up in the mountains and do you recommend a satellite gps like the Garmin Inreach? I've noticed you didn't talk about it in your review, so maybe that's my answer, but just to double check. I'm contemplating if it's worth it. Thank you for all the information and thank you for creating this awesome trail!!

    • @cartapouille
      @cartapouille  Рік тому +2

      Hey Fleur ! No worries, love to be of assistance :) So depending on your provider, you'll have better or worse service. Orange is famous for having the best coverage in the mountains, but Free is by far the cheapest even if coverage is famously not great. I was using Free and I was almost always capable of getting signal. If not on top, on the other side of the mountain, and coverage just keeps on expanding, never had more than 2 days I think without. As far as inreach is, I would say that 95% of the trek is fine without it, and I didn't feel the need. That being said some very difficult sections, especially in the Alps and sometimes in the Pyrenees, can be justified. But again you can skip all the difficult sections easily, and avoid being in this kind of situation you'd feel unsafe. I did after a while.
      plus you often have other hikers on the trail that will check on you as well, so in case of troubles it's rare that you'd be alone completely (GRs are quite popular in France)

    Merci Cartapouille pour cette revue de matériel. Une chose me taquine. Tu es parti avec un équipement de nuit quasi hivernal (Thermarest Xtrm, Couette Cumulus 400, Doudoune Incredilite). Si c'était à refaire, partirais-tu avec un équipement aussi chaud ? Je m’interroge ainsi car en 2022 j'ai marché en juillet août de Wissembourg à Menton, avec un X-Lite200, un uberlite, et une polaire fine Decath. Mais sur un si long court je me demande si ton équipement ne serais pas plus approprié. Merci.

    • @cartapouille
      @cartapouille  Рік тому +1

      Salut le Nain Rouge! Alors je suis parti aussi de mai à octobre, sans changer de matos, et j'ai bien eu besoin de cet équipement lors des extrêmités (saison et altitude). C'était inutile 90% du temps, mais pour les 10% qui restent et la tranquillité d'esprit j'étais bien content. Sachant que le Xtherm est arrivé très tard. Disons que ça dépends de toi, perso j'ai rarement froid mais la nuit je suis plus sensible, et je préfère être un peu overkill mais rasséréné quand à ma faculté à passer un bon moment. Question de budget aussi, j'ai voulu investir dans le meilleur à chaque fois pour pas me prendre la tête quitte à manger des pates :D Enfin sur un très long cours la fatigue accumulée peut jouer des tours! Mais merci en tous cas de ton commentaire :)

      @@cartapouille OK, merci surtout pour ta réponse. Je dois avouer avoir eu au moins 3 nuits bien fraîches et humides, avec des températures entre 5C° et 8C°, et ce en pleine canicule. Cette année, je repartirais avec une doudoune en plus et peut-être une couette plus chaude.

    Merci for sharing. i wondered if you could help me understand how you organised getting new shoes while you were on the trail. mainly how you coordinated picking them up. who to post them to? Hope i am making sense. Doug

    • @cartapouille
      @cartapouille  3 місяці тому +1

      Hey Doug! Well that's quite easy actually, it's as simple as sending it to a post office in "poster restante" and they keep it for 2 weeks for you there. But there's even better : you can send it to many many "relais colis " when you buy online, like Amazon pick up points etc. Also you can send in advance to hotels/camping grounds, where they'll wait for you to come pick em up. The trail is not wild, you'll cross path with villages almost daily :)

    How was the bug pressure?

    • @cartapouille
      @cartapouille  Рік тому

      I see you asked on the Discord as well, but let's put an answer here : it was ok! i know many people got annoyed by ticks in Vosges and end of the Pyrenees, but it wasn't a problem to me really. Just 2 ticks at the very end of my journey. But hiking in long pants probably had to do something about it.
      Mosquitoes were virtually absent and any other bug was insignificant. I did have an ant infestation in my loaf of bread one night but it was manageable :D
