HexaTrek Episode 7 : facing the Mont Aiguille, the halfway point in le Vercors
Greetings,
In this episode we're going to Die for Bastille Day (14 juillet), but before that, we'll reach the symbolic halfway point of the trek !
And all of that with the wise words of Ulric, a former member of the mountain military troops "les Chasseurs Alpins". And not a Special Force as I said in the video. My bad, it just sounded cooler.
Photos courtesy of Stéphane Gal, congrats on that climb!

I am no longer part of the HexaTrek team following internal incidents, and I cannot advise you to support the HexaTrek Association the way it is going right now. That being said, the trail itself is amazing as long as you don't follow blindly the lines on the gpx. Use it as a global recommendation, but stick to the GRs as much as possible would be my advice. And enjoy, it's good out there.

HexaTrek Episode 6 : Lakes, lakes, lakes! Skipping a chunk of the Alps.

Greetings and welcome on Le HexaTrek, le thru de France! We're finally reaching the end of the Alps along the HexaTrek. But I needed to make some adjustments as the way didn't really work well for me, and I decided to skip a huge chunk. There is some pleasure into adapting the way to my needs. And on avoiding rocks. I also suffered from lake madness! As a bonus I talk about the podcast I record...

    I just did the first 50km with two of my friends from the Appalachian Trail. It’s such a great trail, we loved it. Especially since we can camp in the indicated sections and rest assured that it’s allowed (something that we don’t have in Germany). Eventually I will hike more of it, but it was a great sneak peak. Thanks for putting this project together! 🏕️

    Lovely ! Good on you guys. Bit worried about the navigation aspect, so you download a bunch of maps to your phone is that it ! And they work offline ? Also as a someone who would have to fly in to France from the southern hemisphere, is the trail start hard to get to ?

      Thanks buddy! So you can download the gpx file and follow all maps offline as there is no need for connection to use the GPS, saving your battery a lot. And France is one of the most developed countries in the world vis a vis its wilderness, you can access pretty much any point super easily, so clearly beginning and end are very easy to reach via bus/train/hitch hiking, etc :) No worries there!

      Hey Doug! Well that's quite easy actually, it's as simple as sending it to a post office in "poster restante" and they keep it for 2 weeks for you there. But there's even better : you can send it to many many "relais colis " when you buy online, like Amazon pick up points etc. Also you can send in advance to hotels/camping grounds, where they'll wait for you to come pick em up. The trail is not wild, you'll cross path with villages almost daily :)

    Hi, I read your in depth comments for Tales from the Trail about the endless ups and downs on the HT. As you recall, they abandoned the HT after the Alps and chose to continue along a coastal GR. The HT reminds me of the my Appalachian Trail thru hike. The AT was designed over 80 years ago as a peak to peak trail when there was no such thing as a thru hiker. It's original intent was to provide city people access to vigorous climbing for a number of days. It is a long, grueling slog. I'm 65 years old and am looking for a hike in France in 2025. I'm in great shape with a bunch of thru hikes under my belt and I just don't need to prove anything to myself with endless ups and downs. How can you avoid some of them? Did you carry a map? Did you use a different app? For example, how did you figure out how to avoid the ecrins? Is there a practical strategy to tame some of the craziness? Jeff

    • @cartapouille
      @cartapouille 3 місяці тому

      Hey man! Sorry this comment flew under my radar, let me answer you :) So it's pretty easy : don't follow blindly the trek, but follow the GRs. GR in France are amazing, especially GR5 and GR10, they are extremely well maintained, don't require to be a mountain goat and there are no sketchy sections. Put both the hexatrek and the gr10/gr5 maps on top of each other, and follow just the GR5 until you cross to the Pyrenees. This junction is safe to continue on the hexatrek as it's mainly non mountainous, so it's hard to make it hard on purpose. And in the Pyrenees GR10 all the way for smooth sailing and crossing France by foot. The GR tracks are free to find a bit everywhere on the net, and apps like Mapy.cz or Gaia are amazing to follow the road, you can boot the gpx of the hexa on it to see when to avoid those annoying parts. Les écrins is such an obvious skip as it's visually a detour yeah, and the junction is a perfect GR !

      You were so beautifully framed and what you said was rather inspirational! I'm curious though: did you say 'these treks and trails' (like the subtitles said) or 'these tracks and trails' (that's what I understood)? Do you remember?

      @@Nynke_K i think you're right I said "trek and trails" but I obviously meant "tracks". But my English is far from perfect and when it's recorded in live it's even more difficult to find the correct words 😅

    As a German I can't help it. I'm really sorry. I had to pause the video, check the comments and since no one else has had the urge to do what I'm about to do... Let me inhale deeply (*inhales deeply*) - GERMANS HAVE THE BEST BREAD! Ok now I can continue watching. (I'll give you french people pastries and cheese though...)

    • @cartapouille
      @cartapouille Рік тому

      Ahahahahah well I hope you managed to get back on the viewing after this outrage! At the moment you wrote that comment other Germans actually reacted as well to this claim, in fact, 37% of the comment were about this claim. So the urge was shared it seems :p And as I stated elsewhere, it's a hill I'll die on : nothing beats a baguette to me! And every other one we do :D In fact, I never even heard about German bread before another German hiker on the trail mentioned it to me, and we spent weeks arguing over that while walking together.

    You tore your ACL ligament before the trek! Wow and ouch! Thanks for showing us the mountains anyway - they are truly bewitching in relatively small doses 😅. Also: I loved your podcast outros so much! I remember that one time I listened while brushing my teeth and you wished us a happy brushing of teeth and you were finally talking to me! 😆

    • @cartapouille
      @cartapouille Рік тому

      Ahahahah yay it woooooorked! Every time I was doing those outros, i tried to come up with something on the spot and most of the time it was random and silly. But I was secretely hoping that one day it would work for at least one person, that it would happen to be the exact activity that person was doing as they listen. And it worked on you!! Yay !!! That makes me stupidly happy ahah :D Thank you very much for this, and for listening to it actually. Also yeah the ACL is a classic with me, and now after fixing it the surgery weakened my kneecap that got fractured a month ago. This knee will be my forever nightmare :D

      Ahahah I was expecting some Germans there, as it's been an ongoing conversation with another german hexatreker I walked with for several weeks. But yes it's a hill I'll die on: we have the best bread in the world, and no weird black dense dwarf bread that stays the same for a week will change that! Baguette forever! :p
