Another great character analysis can't wait for part 2. At 3:24 you have a asterisk mark at the bottom, and I was wondering where your thoughts on the denizens of HS are? Also what are your thoughts on the Homestuck's epilogue(s), and the fact that they are further divided up as a prologue to the epilogue(s) which means we aren't even starting them yet officially. Just like how HS has Acts within Acts within Acts.
So, basically, Jake isn't dumb, a jerk, oblivious, or a wuss: he's just an everyman who wants to do things HIS way without hurting everyone else's feelings, but it happens anyway because he doesn't think things all the way through and what HE wants isn't always attainable. And when he can't get his way, he runs or hides, because he doesn't like confrontation with his friends. He also doesn't like to admit who he really is, so creates a façade of who he WANTS to be, much like a Knight (except, you know, Knights prefer fight over flight). If I had doubts about being a Page myself before, I don't now -_-;;;;
Well horses are commonly used to symbolise forward motion, maybe they're ment to symbolise constant progression or pulling in opposite directions? both feeding back into the duality and adding to the themes
is it just me that alwayse saw "brain boyfriend dirk" as jakes hope powers? i believe he could construct him in his head, but i always got the feeling at least part of the reason brain dirk is so accurate (but still much more idealized compared to regular dirk) and knew so much was because he was a manifestation of jakes hope power.
I thought so too. I also felt like it was a callback to Tavros believing if he "just wish hard enough maybe it will become real". Until Roxie finally manifested the Matriorb. All part of a cycle starting in early Homestuck, where characters specifically call magic fake, but the things that happen are indistinguishable from magic.
When you were talking about how wimpy Jake was I thought “yeah even John is more manly than him” but then I came to a realization John is probably the most “Manly” character in Homestuck beating Claiborn in a fight and even having a dad that is unnaturally strong so much so that his strength transcends universes
the part about Callie and Dirk being the only two of his friends ot not insult his intelligence aged like a fine wine. over a week. are you secretly a time player?
There is a single error in this video: _Homestuck_ *Day* is an _inter_-national holiday, not merely a national one! Other than that, brilliant stuff as always :)
So, in more general news: AAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAA AAAAAAAA? AAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAA AAAAAAAA! Sorry, I've never been in the fandom while updates were happening before and this is my first shot of that particular form of heroin. Anyway, Jake. No wait, I'm sorry, ABRAXAS ON A CHARIOT WITH HORSES HOLY SHIT okay now Jake. Jake, both English and Harley, are absolutely at the center of Homestuck's Lore. Harley was the lynchpin of the backstory in the Pre-Scratch universe, and English is the lynchpin that connects the Cherubs to the Post-Scratch universe (and the plot as a whole), as you say. He's the fulcrum the plot turns on, which might explain why we only really see the downward arc of his personal development. That, and Hussie cares more about currently active plot than background lore no matter how much of the latter he shoves into the story with a funnel. Also I can't fucking believe even Post-Scratch Jade's job was raising a god frog. Anyway, Jake is a perfect case of gender study because he's inherently intelligent, sensitive, and caring, and he dedicates all his waking hours to not being any of those things (beyond a bluff, cinematic sort of offhanded friendliness) because he has to be a Manly Man and Men Aren't Those Things. You've also quite accurately described him as doing to Jane what "redpills" *think* women do to them constantly, which its own weird kind of reversed-gender concept. Man, not to appeal too hard to your crossover interests, but this guy would fit right in with a certain Abraxas-referencing student council, huh? Right down to the fact that it's ultimately worldly circumstances and social expectations that make him use his abilities in the way he does instead of just being honest or normal.
The fact I can enjoy a video on a character I don't care for, mearly because of who is presenting it, tells a tale of how much I like the narrator. Also because knowledge is power and you always deliver the behind the scenes knowledge everytime. :^)
I am SO glad you're making a video on him! Jake's my favorite too, for many reasons. When I first read Homestuck, I hated him; in the course of rereading and trying to analyse him, as well as trying to read others' interpretations on him, I found him to be much more interesting than I first thought. I tried to see why I hated him so much in the first place, and I found out I had much more in common with him than I previously thought - or that I previously did not want to admit. I am very excited to see your next video about him! You're doing such a great job analyzing and explaining stuffs; can't wait
Im loving this video a lot! Jake was also one of the characters I disliked initially, but ened up loving afterwards. One of the reasons I ended up loving him so much was because I could really sympathise with him and his struggle. That you can really feel the emotional crisis he's going through. After watching the video, its made me think that maybe Jake didnt just manipulate his friends to get what he wants, but also manipulated the audience (as a character) to see him in the light he wants to be perceived as
OH BOY 5:51 IS AWKWARD AFTER BOTH OF SAID FRIENDS IN THE EPILOGUES SAY THIS AS NARRATORS: "[Calliope] directs the powerful vacuum of her hollow glare towards the total idiot. Wait, are you establishing Witch as the Active Counterpart to the Page? That's... different, if so. The way I always heard it was that Witch/Heir are the counterparts to Seer/Mage- magic executed actively rather than passively. Where as Thief/Rogue is that actual counterpart to Knight/Page- Skills used to uphold rules vs. skills used to circumvent them.

Here’s something I’d like to lay down. Sure Jake may have the most potential out of any classpect period, but that potential only really comes out after everything’s been said and done, if this was a “normal” session with no sign of L.E in sight, that makes it to where Jake doesn’t accomplish anything of note when everything is said and done before he can step in, but Dirk is there to provide him with that chance. A chance that he will most likely fuck up and will lead to Dirk hating himself more for putting Jake in harms way. If a page of hope was put into a static session where everyone can get stuff done much faster due to how their way of growth works, where does that leave a page of hope. Mear baggage that’s what. Can you tell that I somewhat despise the wannabe that is Jake English.
Homestuck has been around for ten years. Makes me feel old. Not as big a homestuck fan as I used to be, but I never would have found all of the webcomics I have if not for Homestuck. Even then, there's still a lot about Homestuck that I do like.
Also I’d like to say that your descriptions of Page fit very well with my idea of Page as a passive class, where “passive” rather than meaning ‘for others’ means ‘to invite’ because he invites service from others rather than actively serving others, (also he invites others to serve their hopes by giving the ghosts hope when he defeats LE in the Masterpiece)
Passive means both "For others" and "to invite", according to Calliope. There isn't much reason to discredit the one definition in favor of the other when you get a fuller idea of what active/passive mean from using both. And Knights regularly invite their Aspect as much as Pages do (Karkat dropping Sollux down the stairs and drawing his blood to his benefit is my go-to example). These are factors I've taken into account before coming to my conclusion wrt Pages being active and Knights being passive.
@@flamingnewt3339 Both approaches ("Pages serve themselves, Knights serve others", and "Knights serve actively, Pages passively invite service") make equal amount of sense. It's one of those things we just can't know for sure unless Hussie tells us directly.
While agree on some points on Jake like him being more aware than he presented at times, I disagree that he's manipulative. About him "knowing" about Jane's feelings I don't think its fair to assume he knew for sure he even states that he had a feeling about these sort of things but wasn't 100% on it. Not to mention the conversation he had with Jane was Roxy's idea. And as for the conversation all got to say that Jake didn't do anything wrong he told her at the start what the topic of the conversation would be which she agreed to take part in and she had multiple opportunities to clear the air about her feelings, Jake even asks her again to make sure and she lies and says she has no feelings for him and encourages him to go to Dirk.
Mmm, this watered down some of the hate I had for the character and made me see him in a total different way. Although he is still one of my least favorite characters in the comic.

@@voidprince2257 - are you gatekeeping being asexual simply because I'm not a dude??? The fuck is wrong with you. Sexuality isn't gender exclusive, and that Jake english has time and again shown sexual attraction to both men AND women, hence he is bisexual. Asexuality is no sexual attraction, and gray aces vary in sexual attraction in general
man, i feel a connection with Jake right now.
