Corrections: Below are some errors in my making of the recap some have kindly pointed out. Sorry about these! I'll update as I see others. - There were a few points I got some of the J names mixed up, but I think the meaning remains clear when watching the video. - I called the session for Jane, Jake, Roxy, and Dirk a "dead session", but technically it's a "void session". Caliborn's was dead. I always get it confused because of how the void session is themed around death, dead planets, and undead!
seeing more homestuck content on youtube makes me happy. i feel like i've been going at it alone for a while. looking forward to the "was good actually" video. i've been fighting the "homestuck isn't as bad as people say it is" fight for almost ten years now, it's been seen as cringe for so long and perhaps this reputation can be turned around. i also love how this recap almost makes homestuck seem MORE complicated LMAO edit: also you're into fallout nv which is automatically bad ass
Thanks for watching! There've definitely been more takeaways of "wow this is so complicated" than I had intended. It's over a decade of content condensed into 2 hours; of course it'll feel blazing fast! But alas I might as well own up to its disproportionate complexity lol, but that's part of why I love it. I feel you with the bashing against Homestuck. It's a big reason why I decided to make these videos. I think part of the problem is people invested a lot of their young lives into it, and so when they cringe at the memory of their younger selves, they cringe at the media they consumed then too. That's the charitable interpretation anyway. And yeah Fallout New Vegas is great! Wish more people watched the Cinemodded Series but whatever, *we* love it.
The other thing that makes Homestuck taboo other than being a thing people have spent years in their teenager years is that it also petered out in 2013-2016 and that there is also controversy with Andrew Hussie attitude towards the fanbase at the end of Homestuck coupled with the fact that The Homestuck Epilogues and Beyond Canon themselves were controversial, meaning even if you thought Homestuck was good in whatever it did it was a taboo to suggest what Andrew Hussie did is good. Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff was a side thing gone well beyond Hussie himself.
As someone who likes and defends the Epilogues, Homestuck^2, and Beyond Canon, this is not an explanation I support. Hussie has always been an insufferable troll. The only shift in their behavior towards the end of Homestuck was getting burnout and becoming more distant.
i love how i read homestuck a lot of times, it's the subject i've been fascinated in for over half a decade. and yet i have not understood it any better until i watched your video LMAO thank you for recapping it in layman tears
I still remember dipping out around act 6 because the haituses were taking so long and the story got so crazy. It's amazing to see, after all these years, that it wasnt even halfway done.
holy christ in a handbasket. you've actually done what I thought was impossible no lie, this is the best start of 2025 I could ask for - as imperfect and crazy as homestuck is, it has a very special place in my heart excellent work, 10/10, gonna watch it again like right now
At around the alpha trolls my brain just gave up retaining information effectively so i had to play and read a bunch of sections multiple times. Would have loved to have this video then! Love it!
Having attempted to consume homestuck on my own time it still baffles me how complicated and convoluted the story is. Even with it being summed up like this my brain hurts but at least I understand the charactersa lot more. So now I'm 100% sure my classmates were making fun of me for not understanding homestuck and believing their ocs were real.
first time? i fell down the warhammer rabbit hole in 2021 i know far beyond what a man should know. guess i'm going to learn about homestuck now yippee!
jeez man that was actually a solid and good explanation of something that has ridiculously small details to lose. Also a real complete 180 from all your other content lol, this was a real effort and it shows
Thank you. Homestuck is something I've been wanting to do content on for a while, but turns out video essays are hard to make and take quite a while to do so!
to recap all of homestuck, to do it in under two hours, and to have it be this well done is an amazing feat! this video is wonderfully done and reminded me of my homestuck glory days :’) i will definitely be rewatching
i had homestuck on the brain because my friend thought stucky was a homestuck thing and so i reread homestuck just because and now i'm here. can't fight the homestuck
50:47 Actually, it's a void session, not a dead session A void session (as explained on pages 4701-4702) refers to a kind of null session in which none of the sprites are prototyped before entry, preventing the underlings and monarchs from gathering any abilities or powers from prototypings This kind of session can't be won as the Battlefield won't reach its final form which are shaped by the prototypings, preventing the creation of a new universe A dead session (according to pages 5497 and 5994) is a specific type of void session that includes only one player It represents the highest level of difficulty in Sburb and is intentionally designed to be unwinnable, serving as a punishment for players attempting to play the game solo The kernelsprite in this type of session collapses into a black hole, sucking in the planet, the sun, and eventually the entire solar system This type of session is described as nearly unrecognizable in comparison to other sessions
I can't believe how much longer Homestuck has gone after I stopped hearing about it I guess Homestuck was the convolution we made along the way all along
note on Vriska's just death- Iirc Hussie commented that it was meant to show the clock hadn't stopped ticking, but Slick banging on it made it land on Just unnaturally. What the clock might have decided on by itself was deliberately left ambiguous, per the moral ambiguity at the core of Vriska's character
100%, yeah I remember those comments. Personally I felt them to be redundant. The mechanisms of the god tier clocks were always ambiguous narrative contrivances, and so adding an extra layer of ambiguity didn't seem that significant to me. I think Hussie mostly felt they had to make those comments because the fandom was incensed at the idea of the god-author confirming the binary morality of the character. I think Vriska is fascinating and nuanced, but I also think her desire to endanger the whole group just to play the hero was a villainous thing to do.
@@kylemarshiku She's the most gamerbrained, and wins inside the game rules, but ruins everything /outside/ those rules. That's the metaphor. I feel like I finally understand what the hell Homestuck was actually supposed to be.
I got into the comic back around when I started high school (c. 2014), and was around to see the comic end. Around the start of 2024 I actually revisited Homestuck to an extent, due to a small resurgence of people remembering it existed (including me). It's such a unique and complex webcomic. I at one point wrote a fanventure that ended up being the length of a novel in wordcount (unpublished, of course). At any rate, I gotta give you props for the immense effort that was summarizing *everything.*
Your first video was magnificent, and this is even better. Like many here commenting, I have been ailing at describing Homestuck in such a way that is cohesive and coherent and you have done that. For this, you have both a tip of my hat and my utmost respect. Well done, good sir.
Thank you! In the next video, I address Pesterquest in a "Spin-Offs" section, but I don't go that into detail because I was already at nearly 5 hours of content total >_
I do believe, however, that the only good thing to come out of Homestuck: Beyond Canon is the fact that Vriska finally socially matured with the help of Tavros and Aradia. It was wholesome in the end.
crazy how you dropped this video one day after i started reading the damn thing. watching it after reading some sections made it a tad easier to understand, and a lot better than the recaps at the end of the chapters (i will NOT read an entire recap in white text)
Thanks! I'm glad to hear that! I made the collage in an afternoon but felt like I really had something with it, like an accessory that just ties a whole outfit together.
I was looking for a video literally exactly along these lines a few weeks ago and couldn't find anything-you have perfect timing. :D This brings me back to the days when I was following the comic live. (Also, it's a shame that Hussie has turned out to be a kinda not great guy, but at least the franchise is in much better hands now.)
This is just what I needed. I noticed myself getting a bit confused about some stuff in Beyond Canon (I really love it since the new team started and am excited to see where it will go.) and this cleared things up a lot! Thank you!
Holy shit lmao, thank you for this. I was there to see the original homestuck since more or less 2012, and kept up with it until the finale. Hadn't touched anything after besides friendsims, but this video has made me interested to give the epilogues, even homestuck 2 a try, if so I get to read Beyond Canon. That artstyle is banging

I embarked on the Ativan induced fever dream that was Homestuck when I was 11 and followed it through to its completion when I was 15 in 2016. Now here I am at 23 in 2025 still having that same fever dream compressed into 2 hours. Excellently done, thank you for the nostalgia!
This was one of the best recaps of homestuck and thank you for just telling the story in this recap and not going into your opinions. A lot of recaps add their own opinions and it’s decently concise. Good Video 🧢🧢🧢🧢🧢/🧢🧢🧢🧢🧢
I’m surprised how well my memory has held up over the past 6 years since I read this. I was fighting HARD to actually retain all that information when I initially consumed it, I guess a bit too hard 😅
Actually watching this. Second time listening.... holy crap man... shed tears at the sound track both times... man.... homestuck... i remember when the (my side of anyway) internet would go crazy when a new episode dropped .. or you would go on the wiki and see that new episodes dropped. Waiting during the gigapause... the whole Caucasian thing.... ah.... the Cascade crash... it only took one word and a leitmotif ah rambling should be doing dishs! Thanks for the video!
20 mins in, as somebody who only knows i TOLD you about the stairs bro, i think what i need isn't a recap but a damn deep dive. I'm talking 13hr Bionicle lore levels of detail
Reading homestuck was like an out of body experience for me, almost everything went in one ear and out the other. all I remembered was that i liked Nepeta lol. thank you for helping me understand it 😂
Small note but I always interpreted the tavvy peanut allergy thing as Jake's hope powers curing him because Jake hoped more than anything that tavvy would stop being tortured by gamzee (given the hope aura around him when he injects tavvy)
Not a bad idea, but I think the HSBC writers were trying to make a point about allergies not being permanently debilitating (because they did it a 2nd time with Gcatavrosprite).
@@kylemarshiku Thats possible but given that I don't believe exposure therapy for a deadly peanut allergy exists and the fact that jake describes the events as him wishing that it would stop and then it suddenly stopping alongside the hope aura I think its more likely they intended to imply it was jakes hope powers
14:57 ermmm actually the betty crocker meteor (jade's) wasnt what killed nanna, the meteor that killed nanna was john's meteor which crashed into her joke shop while she was inside ☝️🤓
I kinda wonder if there's a time limit on just/heroic actions when it comes to god tier deaths. Like what if Jane suddenly see the errors of her ways and stops being terrible. If she died a year later, would it still be considered a just death or would she come back? How long time has to pass before a just/heroic action doesn't apply to a god tier death?
The conditional immortality was said to work mysteriously, but my guess is "would it makes sense to at least 51% of the audience". If one year later, Jane was feeling terrible about what she had done and was trying to fix it, but only one year was not enough time for her to undo 30 years of damage, and she died in that time, I think a just death would make sense, though the circumstances could change it, like if she had a heel turn right at the end and died heroically somehow.
first off, kudos to the amazing summation. as someone who's never read it in full, i have no choice but to believe what you say, but your inclusion of well-formatted subtitles for this video alongside your diction and word choice have me feeling that you're a trustworthy internet stranger. anyways, JESUS CHRIST. describing just the broad strokes really reminds me how much Homestuck influenced an era of the internet: the story had AUs within its own plot; everyone in the story is basically pansexual and canon shipping dynamics were introduced, but also the trolls are asexual; the entire thing with typing quirks; RAISING TOBY FOX INTO THE LIMELIGHT. yeesh.
im so glad this video exists bc i tried getting into homestuck bc of the art and characters but my brain could not read the word walls of text. i think the epilogues make no sense compared to the og story. a bunch of huhs and what is going on. then again, i am not a hs fan so don’t take me tew seriously. also kanya is just to be mad rose had sex with jade ?????? idk man 😭😭
I have extreme homestuck autism so i already understood everything but still thoroughly enjoyed this video. There are a couple of places where I would have added some context you left out but that's personal preference, and I only noticed one outright mistake, which wasn't even important at all. So I definitely can resist the urge to umm, actually you about it. Truly, I would have to be an asshole to correct a tiny detail that doesn't matter and does not detract from the very high quality of this video. . . . . . Please, don't keep scrolling . . 21:25 Actually, she was cheating against Doc Scratch in a game of chess, which is what made him made. She *was* also probably cheating at FLARPing using the cue ball and Doc Scratch himself, but he was a willing accomplice to that. I am so sorry
Sorry you are mistaken. Scratch was mad about her possession of the orb specifically: "Terezi: Inform Mr. Vanilla Milkshake about his missing orb." "SHE HAS WHAT?!"
56:41 Technically, John doesn't actually hate Con Air On pages 6189-6190, John becomes emotional when he retcons into Con Air, revealing that he still feels the same way about it as he always has On page 6231, he has hearts in his eyes while watching it On page 6455, the text states: "JOHN: blah blah three years blah blah blah blah blah blah Con Air. JOHN: blah blah thought it sucked blah blah blah blah but eventually came to my senses blah blah." What actually happened was John was frustrated by the isolation he felt on his birthday, while also going through puberty The events in the game, including his dad's death and the anniversary of those occurrences coinciding with his birthday, contributed to his anger This led him to lash out at everything, including his favorite movie, as a way to regain a sense of control
This is all true. I didn't feel it truly incorrect to simplify it as him realizing his favorite movie wasn't good, but yes it is more complicated than that.
I know I read decently far into homestuck as it was coming out, but everything just past the dancestors is so fuzzy to me. When I realized I was learning new info ~halfway through the video this was no longer just background noise I had to stop and focus
1:08:39 wait, half gamzee? I thought lil cal was caliborn + lil hal + equius, I somehow missed the fact that gamzee was in the mix as well this whole time
If you're considering, my first recommendation would be to watch the recap (I'm biased but still lol), and my 2nd would be to watch the dub, Let's Read Homestuck
I wanted to check out the unofficial collection, but none of its images are working. Does anyone here know how to fix it or do I just need to wait for the creator to address it. I’ve found reports of this issue from up to 3 weeks ago, but no solutions yet.
I was obsessed with homestuck for years, got disappointed with the ending and never read the epilogues. Im not sure whether I'm glad or disappointed that i never read beyond that point??
Personally I liked the ending. The abruptness when they touch the door symbolizes the characters exiting the comic, and thus it ends. (Well until the post-canon stuff.)
Interesting, yeah, I could see that being a well defensible take. Like, you gotta keep trying, because even if THIS you doesn't make it, perhaps another one will.
hey started reading homestuck the other day and just finished the pool balls guy interlude, what the FUCK do you mean thats only a tenth of the way in i though i was halfway done
I consumed homestuck in like two weeks on winter break just when Collide came out. It was amazing, but I was young and read it in English when the Spanish translation stopped so I only understood half of it. Until I get a pc to re read it (and mourn the lose of the flash games I did get to play), this is amazing to remind me of stuff. More people need to talk about Homestuck and how actually amazing it is behind the cringy old humor and convoluted plots. Also everyone st the time said the Epilogues were bad.. And they kinda are maybe, but I think in a camp way lol. It has the same meta shenanigans hs has but with some more fanfic stuff (as in more inter personal dinamics with all the new relationships and sex), but it does make HS2 a bit hard to follow. Excited to see what it becomes in future years Pd: I never knew Beyond Canon returned already, I'm loving the new artstyle, the characters are still simple but the normal-ish proportions are really good
Thank you! Yeah I believe the hate towards the Epilogues to be unfounded. It's effectively a meme that gets regurgitated. People say how it's fanfiction-y and cringe, and like, do they think original Homestuck wasn't? It's just a nostalgia old-vs-new thing. Or maybe people just being prudish about sex. Maybe I'm just a Homestuck fan but I love all of it lol.
@kylemarshiku lol also as if og homestuck wasn't the same but they were all teens so it would be weird to show them having sex, but all the relationship drama was there

A void session (as explained on pages 4701-4702) refers to a kind of null session in which none of the sprites are prototyped before entry, preventing the underlings and monarchs from gathering any abilities or powers from prototypings
This kind of session can't be won as the Battlefield won't reach its final form which are shaped by the prototypings, preventing the creation of a new universe
A dead session (according to pages 5497 and 5994) is a specific type of void session that includes only one player
It represents the highest level of difficulty in Sburb and is intentionally designed to be unwinnable, serving as a punishment for players attempting to play the game solo
The kernelsprite in this type of session collapses into a black hole, sucking in the planet, the sun, and eventually the entire solar system

I got into homestuck in 2023 and honestly it is really amazing to see all of homestuck summarised into one video great job
Thank you!
I embarked on the Ativan induced fever dream that was Homestuck when I was 11 and followed it through to its completion when I was 15 in 2016. Now here I am at 23 in 2025 still having that same fever dream compressed into 2 hours. Excellently done, thank you for the nostalgia!
Thank you! I tell my partner that this video is like micro-dosing Homestuck lol
I never had any experience with Homestuck, im 10 minutes in. Opinions so far: Wtf is going on!?!?!?
This was one of the best recaps of homestuck and thank you for just telling the story in this recap and not going into your opinions. A lot of recaps add their own opinions and it’s decently concise. Good Video 🧢🧢🧢🧢🧢/🧢🧢🧢🧢🧢
Thank you! I am also releasing a video essay where I do go into my opinions, but I wanted to keep that separate from the recap itself
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it
Bro theres no way this was your first video of 2025 when i just got back into homestuck and need to remember it... Idk you, but youre the gOAT
Seems like it's crazier than I thought
only ever heard the name before, this is my first time learning anything about this. what the fuck, this sucks and is awsome
I don't know how you did it.... but you made homestuck make sense. amazing. everyone needs to watch this
I may be biased because it would very much make me happy if everyone did see this, but yes I agree, I want 8 billion views : P
I am… both intimidated and in awe at your ability to explain homestuck… i… i think i just had an aneurysm in another timeline…
Alright but that was a doomed timeline : P anyway thank you
20 mins in, as somebody who only knows i TOLD you about the stairs bro, i think what i need isn't a recap but a damn deep dive. I'm talking 13hr Bionicle lore levels of detail
Well, hey, I made another Homestuck video : P
I'm unironically gonna watch it right now, tysm!
the games will never stop!!!
IT'S GAAAAYME BROOOOOO
Reading homestuck was like an out of body experience for me, almost everything went in one ear and out the other. all I remembered was that i liked Nepeta lol. thank you for helping me understand it 😂
"All I remember is that I liked this little kitty girl. Surely nothing will go wrong!"
(jokes aside, thanks for watching)
I just saw all the acts & timestamps. I finally get that Deltarune meme
Very cool summary! I also detect a slight (and justified tbf) bias against Vriska
Thanks! Honestly I think she's an interesting character that has done both good and bad (more bad than good though)
@@kylemarshiku Aye, that's a good way to go about her. Can't wait for the upcoming video!
It's fair, she's a b but still my fav. The true one we should hate is gamzee
What is with the Homestuck Resurgence!
Last year the sequel returned from hiatus, and it's recently gotten pretty good; that's just my guess
14:57 ermmm actually the betty crocker meteor (jade's) wasnt what killed nanna, the meteor that killed nanna was john's meteor which crashed into her joke shop while she was inside ☝️🤓
All the J names are hard to keep up with ;_;
I kinda wonder if there's a time limit on just/heroic actions when it comes to god tier deaths.
If one year later, Jane was feeling terrible about what she had done and was trying to fix it, but only one year was not enough time for her to undo 30 years of damage, and she died in that time, I think a just death would make sense, though the circumstances could change it, like if she had a heel turn right at the end and died heroically somehow.
interesting way to kick off 2025.
*saved to watch later
the candy and meat endings always had me fucked up bro no lie
first off, kudos to the amazing summation. as someone who's never read it in full, i have no choice but to believe what you say, but your inclusion of well-formatted subtitles for this video alongside your diction and word choice have me feeling that you're a trustworthy internet stranger. anyways, JESUS CHRIST. describing just the broad strokes really reminds me how much Homestuck influenced an era of the internet: the story had AUs within its own plot; everyone in the story is basically pansexual and canon shipping dynamics were introduced, but also the trolls are asexual; the entire thing with typing quirks; RAISING TOBY FOX INTO THE LIMELIGHT. yeesh.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. If it's any consolation about my credibility, I believe I am correct on everything I'm not wrong about : P
Heheheh time to get into homestuck
Nice! Hope you like it
Thank you for this summary despite reading homestuck several times the meat and candy portions always baffled me 😅😅
No problem, thank you for watching! Yeah the Epilogues require a lot more reading between the lines than Homestuck proper had typically done
im so glad this video exists bc i tried getting into homestuck bc of the art and characters but my brain could not read the word walls of text. i think the epilogues make no sense compared to the og story. a bunch of huhs and what is going on. then again, i am not a hs fan so don’t take me tew seriously. also kanya is just to be mad rose had sex with jade ?????? idk man 😭😭
Now we need a 7 hour essay about "What the fuck is a Homestuck?!?!"
I got the next best thing: a 2.5 hour one called "Homestuck Is Good, Actually"!
@kylemarshiku That will suffice, thank you good sir.
You know that one game Terminator Chess? Yeah, no, that's simpler than this.

Scratch was mad about her possession of the orb specifically:
"Terezi: Inform Mr. Vanilla Milkshake about his missing orb."
"SHE HAS WHAT?!"
Nice recap and use of music, makes me wanna reread
Thanks! Homestuck music is AWESOME
I think im going to need to rewatch this 12 times to understand everything
Sounds like a plan to me! : P
56:41 Technically, John doesn't actually hate Con Air
On pages 6189-6190, John becomes emotional when he retcons into Con Air, revealing that he still feels the same way about it as he always has
On page 6231, he has hearts in his eyes while watching it
On page 6455, the text states:
"JOHN: blah blah three years blah blah blah blah blah blah Con Air.
JOHN: blah blah thought it sucked blah blah blah blah but eventually came to my senses blah blah."
What actually happened was John was frustrated by the isolation he felt on his birthday, while also going through puberty
The events in the game, including his dad's death and the anniversary of those occurrences coinciding with his birthday, contributed to his anger
This led him to lash out at everything, including his favorite movie, as a way to regain a sense of control
Hope you liked the video!
still somehow indecipherable
Just watched it with a friend who didn't know anything about Homestuck, and the look on his face lol
1:08:39 wait, half gamzee? I thought lil cal was caliborn + lil hal + equius, I somehow missed the fact that gamzee was in the mix as well this whole time
Yup! It's why Lord English does the Vast Honk : P
Watching this reminds me of a fanventire I started making a couple years back, I really should remake that as it had some fun ideas
So, bassically, if im undertstanding this correctly, the home is stuck
close, the stuck was home jk
I was getting exhausted 22 minutes in, holy fucking shit
No worries, it does go fast
>homestuck recap
>it's almost 2 hours long
i will never be able to get into this series, will i.
Oh really? That's unfortunate. It was working last time we checked. If it helps, the HICU has repaired most of the original Homestuck website by now.
(Well until the post-canon stuff.)
have i read Homestuck more than once? yes. am i still watching this whole recap anyway? also yes
Lol thanks for watching!
I just realize Homestuck is about losing over and over again but keep trying
Interesting, yeah, I could see that being a well defensible take. Like, you gotta keep trying, because even if THIS you doesn't make it, perhaps another one will.
amazing
hey started reading homestuck the other day and just finished the pool balls guy interlude, what the FUCK do you mean thats only a tenth of the way in i though i was halfway done
Lol this was so funny, thank you
thanks, now i know what i missed when i wasnt on tumblr
my brain hurts
HOMESTUCK VIDEO ESSAY CONTENT IN 2025
GREAT stuff
Omfg I thought beyond canon was the same as squared omfg I've been missing out omfgggggg 😭😭😭😭
"Officially" it is, but in most real ways, I maintain it is separate.

I NEVER GOT THAT, OH MY GOODNESS
Excited to see what it becomes in future years
Pd: I never knew Beyond Canon returned already, I'm loving the new artstyle, the characters are still simple but the normal-ish proportions are really good
@kylemarshiku lol also as if og homestuck wasn't the same but they were all teens so it would be weird to show them having sex, but all the relationship drama was there
Im trying SO hard to consume all of this information, and NONE of it is sticking lmao.
lol sorry about that
@ i guess thats just how it is with homestuck lmao
Let me tell you about Homestuck~
thank god i aint the only one who pronounces "aranea" that way lmao
Yay someone agrees with me lol
