    I gotta say, the patent running out on the axis lock has got to be one of the best things to happen to the knife world in a long time. I've been using the Hogue/Ritter Mini RSK as my daily driver for a long while, and I'm in love. It looks like it's got a bit sturdier handle than this, and comes in 20CV instead of Magnacut

    • @nebulamask81
      @nebulamask81 Рік тому +2

      20cv/m390 should outperform Magnacut's edge retention if they're both heat treated for it. There is a lot of 20cv around at 58-60hrc etc. though that won't give the best edge retention performance.

    • @dayannahkali
      @dayannahkali Рік тому +4

      "only 20cv"?
      Magnacut is only 5/10 at abrasion resistance, while 20cv is 6.5/10. Source knifesteelnerd aka Larin Thomas aka the very creator of Magnacut. The strength of the steel is toughness (7/10 when 3V is 9,so, not bad, but still inferior to 14c28n for exemple) and being tough it could handle a more acute edge. Every degree of thinness is way more dramatic on cutting ability than whatever carbides in the steel. In that regard, magnacut can outperform 20cv yes, but you have to put the thin edge on it. Factory don't take the risk of thin edges because they don't want to see their blades come back...
      (OR they are not geek enough, or dumb when they do it on s90v)

    You've gotta hand it to Benchmade; they sure know how to sell the Hogue Deka.
    Why else would they increase the price of the Bugout from (an already ridiculous) $180 to $200, without upgrading it at all, unless they're actively trying to get people to buy this instead?

    • @kevinwaterson
      @kevinwaterson Рік тому +4

      It is expensive to stay in a first world/third world shithole location while still producing decent knives. Portland, Oregon used to make some of the best knives in the US. Between Benchmade, Gerber, Leatherman, Coast cutlery, Kershaw, and CRKT. All have gone down in quality, except for Benchmade. So, I guess, you get what you pay for?

    • @etherealicer
      @etherealicer Рік тому +3

      You understand that the Hogue Deka also has an MSRP of $180+ (depending on the version). Don't compare MSRP to street prices... And yes, the Deka is still cheaper, but still worth mentioning.

    • @gpearce11
      @gpearce11 Рік тому +2

      @Beat E. Schaub Firstly, I was clearly comparing the grivory base models, not the more premium models (where the Bugout is still more expensive; the Blade HQ exclusive 20CV/G10 Bugout was over $40 more than the 20CV/G10 Deka). Secondly, I was comparing MSRP because it's consistent, unlike the retail "sale price."

    • @gpearce11
      @gpearce11 Рік тому +4

      @@kevinwaterson I can guarantee that 99% of people that care if their knife is US made don't care what state is made in. Spyderco isn't losing sales because they're in Colorado instead of Oregon, and I doubt Hogue loses sales for being in Nevada.

    • @etherealicer
      @etherealicer Рік тому

      @@gpearce11 If we are comparing MSRP, then they are the same ($180). And yes, retail price varies a lot, especially internationally (here in Switzerland, Hogue is far more expensive and far less available, even the Sigg knives).
      So, for the same MSRP, you get better blade material from Hogue (although there are questions about the heat treatment, but commonly Hogue does blades well). And you get better (but not great) fit and finish if you buy a Bugout (and smaller thumb studs).
      These are both pretty good knives, not great as they both have their flaws. At the end of the day you choose what you like better. Purely as a knife, I would buy neither of them, I would rather buy the Mini RSK from Hogue, or the James Brand Carter (yeah yeah, I know, hipster knife). The reason why I own several Bugouts but will not keep the Deka is simple: After-market support and modding. To me, that is what makes the Bugout different. That does not matter to many, but to the Bugout fans, that is a key element. And that is why IMHO, the Deka is not really a competition to the Bugout, no matter how often it gets compared.

    One of the very first plastics to be fiber reinforced was Nylon as well as Acetal. 1964. I worked in the Materials Lab at Ford Motor and did the testing to qualify vendors providing this material to the company. I gave my Hogue Deka to my son for testing. If anyone can do a good heavy work test of a knife it is my son. Full time fireman/medic. The heat treat on the Hogue is 60-61.

  • @poncho151
    @poncho151 Рік тому +9

    The Deka and hogue in general are really a much better value than Benchmade and the bugout specifically. I think if hogue would make a new line or variations of their current knives that ventures away from their tactical appearance it would open them up to a whole new market. Also I think a lot of people are still skeptical of Magnacut since there’s been some hiccups with heat treats and an incredible amount of hype but I think it’s proving to be a very remarkable steel not only in performance but also simply because it’s basically a highly stainless tool steel which up to now was unthinkable.

    I've been growing my knife collection for 20 years, and for most of that time, I've swapped out what I'm carrying every few days for novelty or what I'm planning to do that day. Since I got the Magnacut Deka, I've been using the same setup for about 7 months now. Deka in the pocket, Bradford Guardian 3.5 MagnaCut in a taco Kydex on my belt with straps. Honestly, though, the Deka gets used for most things.
    Unintentionally tested Magnacut's toughness a month ago. I'd tried to cut through a painted steel staple (hidden in some new gloves) that I thought was a black ziptie. I bore down on it pretty hard. The Magnacut did flatten a bit, but it didn't chip, and I was able to bring it back with a 1000 grit stone and stropping. There's no evidence that anything happened to it. I've been very impressed with it!

I almost never like thumb studs because they can catch on the edge of my pocket (kind of like the Emmerson wave is designed to) and unexpectedly open the knife. Hating thumb studs is just one reason why I love Spyderco. Anyway, I think I’ll try removing the thumb studs on my Hogue/Ritter RSK MK1 and see how I like it.

    Dude you finally have one of my top 2-3 most favorite knives of all in my collection, same model, same color, steel, everything. Such an incredible knife. Got mine on sale for around $110 on holidays but goddamn I love this knife. In my head I was always thinking you should really check this one out and that you’d like it. This thing is always in my pocket along with some larger thicker beaters. The edge on this holds really fucking well like some much harder steel but then it strops back beautifully like some 5cr…. Magnacut is truly a unique steel.
    Edit: after watching the video I must mention that hogue runs their magnacut labeled between 60-62 HRC. This means they are using a different treat and running it softer than the optimal 63hrc treat designed by Larrin and used by spyderco/big brown bear. I really do wish they would run it up to 63 but this is a more difficult treat to do on a production scale which is probably why the run it soft. It doesn’t gain much edge retention at 63 but it sharpens easier and strops easier as well

    • @TheBootyWrangler

      I seriously smacked the edge into the corner of a sidewalk while busting down boxes for my grandma outside her garage and the only damage to the edge is a tiny tiny rolled section that doesn’t even catch the paper after a 0.5 micron diamond strop. I swear the more times I strop this to maintain the edge the sharper it gets… and I’ve sat there carving oak for 30 mins with no discernible difference to the edge. I spray out my deka with a garden hose when the pivot and lock get dirty and it never had even a speck of rust. It’s extremely low maintenance. I just with original goat would ship my scales already it’s been about 3 weeks since my order and I haven’t gotten a reply on my emails

It is not the most aesthetically pleasing knife, feels somewhat cheap, but it stays sharp. After listening to rave reviews about this knife, I bought one with the wharncliffe blade. The blade is great. The polymer handle is anything but. It feels slippery and toy-like, *not* similar to the FRN handle on my Delica. I ordered aluminum replacement scales from Original GOAT, the extended version, 3mm longer, since I also found the stock handle did not fit my hand well. The scales arrived yesterday, but I have not installed them yet. They were $80, which pushes the price of this knife to over $200. Another thing I learned from the Hogue Deka (I do not own a Bugout) is that sometimes a knife can be *too* light. Now I know that I have a sweet spot for knife weight in the hand, and the Hogue Deka is not in it. As is, off the shelf, I would give the Deka three out of five stars.

    Original Goat has a number of aftermarket aluminum scales for the Deka 2, and they're well worth the price. They take what is a great knife to truly excellent - not only do they fix the cheap, flimsy feel, they also result in a better, smoother action and a better balance. With the scales, my Deka is now in my top 3 favorite knives.
    I personally disagree about the able lock. I think it's a good amount of grippyness without destroying your thumb, but ymmv

    Another reason for the lowe edge retention on the first test could be a somewhat over heated factory edge, which you only partially removed on the first sharpening. Then got all the way past burnt steel on the second sharpening. Just an idea. Could also be the ceramic you finished the edge with, or the lack of stropping. So many variables.

      @matusknives Рік тому +1

      My thought exactly. It is in a sense next-to-impossibe not to overheat the edge in the production up to a certain degree, the question is only how much.

    I appreciate your comments about the comfort/ergonomics - I actually wish you would comment on those more. You actually use knives to cut serious things - so your thoughts on how they feel would be appreciated. You made a quick comment about the compression lock beating you up - and I had a similar experience with the Para2 LW - when I had to do 2 min worth of wood shaping - I almost got a bister. Now, I love the compression lock - and found that the Sage 5 LW has full liners - and I don't have as much issue.

  • @bfboobie

    Elishewitz?? Awesome! He does great work , designs blades popular w military. Def gonna get this Hogue before they sell out or change the design it looks great. Resembles griptilian or mini grip but the flex handles of bugout. I carried mini griptilian for years and borrowed a friends full griptilian one day at work in the warehouse. His was buttery smooth too but had a broken tip. Such is the life of a hard working man and his blade, but it was still so good he didn't replace it lol. I carried mini grips too for years, and yes they had a thick sturdy handle but the blade design was inferior to the 535 bugout model. I replaced my mini grip with a bugout and it is quite a bit BETTER in all regards. (i lost the mini grip, otherwise id still heft it about perhaps, although the 535gry1 bugout would definitely still be the main EDC folder. Per 'flex handles' I don't care my bugout takes any task I throw at for an EDC folder. Not ONCE has the handle presented an issue. It is a PERFECT smooth operating and capable knife design. Fixed blades are for harder work anyway, and I've never seen or heard of a broken bugout. Will def try this Hogue! Thanks for good video.
    Wait it's 130 dollars? Might as well buy a Benchmade LOL. Gross artificial inflation. Come on Hogue
    It seems Hogue is overpriced so you might as well go with Benchmade.
    I think there is marketing hype in new steels. Yes it is fascinating to read from their blogs like the knife steel nerd etc but come on be real, it's like reinventing the wheel or reinventing the oldest most basic tool of humanity and charging stupid prices.
    I think this is a good and fair video review, new to this channel and you do really good videos!! Appreciate your information here dude.
    A wise man once said "the best folding knife-lock man has ever invented will be free to make without trademark soon, and we will design "new steels" to justify charging high prices even for the companies that can freely build and sell axis locks." I think a website like knife steel nerds is really interesting and he is extremely proficient and sharp, and it is fun to read his thoughts and see great macro photography of the types of steel. I wish he would become a billionaire so he could just buy up mfgers and be willing to break even or take a loss to prove his point that he is The Man of Steel. I like it and I think steel is fascinating. Maybe production technology is a bit limited of course, and then there's where do we mine the ores for steel?
    Pretty sure steel has not tremendously improved since Damascus Syria so many hundreds of years ago (thousands?), tho stainless and carbon varieties and things like CPM and good heat treat process are good to have ... The Axis lock however is a major major invention and there's good reason people don't use other inferior locks much once they can hold and know the trust in the axis style mechanism.
    Coincidental timing this super steel marketing post-BM era? Idk could be. I like knives and yes did buy some Benchmade but I can't afford to collect more so I equally love my bucks, mora's, little antique pen knives, etc etc, even some cheap Chinese blades to see if they'll ever hold up to good ol Made in the USA but personally I find good luck and quality with Benchmade. From the old nimravus fixed and some old beater mini grips to the 162 bushcrafter that is just as good as any fieldcrafting knife made today. I heard some vague shitposting about BM the last year or two and honestly i dont follow the company because i cannot afford their knives currently really, but you would think SOME of the anti BM sentiment is purely from their high prices and inaccessibility to so many people who have grown up and become vocal now and spent their earnings on a more affordable blade or two when they grew up. BM IS without a doubt one of the greatest knife factories in North America. Too bad they're expensive because we do not live in high earn to expense ratio like previous decades, at least in the USA where cost of living and average income gap grows ever more.
    ALSO the trend for a knife that never needs to be sharpened, is a symptom that the art and skill of sharpening is dwindling in modern times of convenience, and commercialization etc. Just like people don't darn their socks like our grandparents. I mean I LOVE bucks steel like the classic model 119 because you really don't feel bad USING a 50 dollar blade because it is SO easy to get RAZOR sharp edge quickly with minimal effort. And it performs VERY well for several very intense tasks where anyone could find time to hone it, tho you won't notice dulling until days of hard hard work that most men don't put their knives through regularly. I mean batoning firewood, excessive food and game prep, etc and you will NEVER think 'oh it's a crap dull blade' because it takes like 1 minutes to razor sharpen it after your hard weekend in the woods. To be honest I carry my Buck 119 into the woods more than my Benchmade 162 simply because if I LOSE the knife, one is cheaper to replace. Not saying people will lose knives, but i have lost more than one knife, and the factory leather sheath for the BM 162 is horrible in the way the snap closure comes free and you'll realize some meters or minutes down the way that your belt sheath is empty for some reason. Then hope you find a great knife stuck tip down in the mud , phew. They are both fantastic working knives, and yes the Buck has been field tested for many decades longer by outdoorsmen and hunters.
    People that buy new super steels probably a) won't USE them as much as cheaper knives and b) probably because they don't want to spend the time to sharpen them.
    I think there are knife nerds that would pawn their wife's wedding ring for a new blade, and yes there are design enthusiasts and people with disposable income for new designs, but the trend of affordable HIGH quality EDC tools should be something to strive for. I do NOT think most men should just settle for crappy china blades mfg when the EDC blade is often a life or death tool for humans and by 2023 yes we should have affordable quality for such simple tool.
    The edge retention here seems plenty legit from a guy who installs floors and clearly put it through additional unnecessary cutting, and the sharpness later in the paper test is impressive! I think it is a good showcase for this steel. However I am feeling more and more as time goes on, I think knives should be affordable and not gimmicky (i dont own this blade but i feel 'new steels' and putting good old Benchmade designer on Team Hogue to splat his name on the blade, is a bit hoguey lol). I want to be clear I think the Axis style lock is NOT gimmicky it is the best I have come across and I'm very glad others are free to utilise it. 30-ish bucks less than the competitor listed here, is not to scoff about, but can decent makers not take a hint from a company like Mora and just make really badass LOW priced blades regardless of 'latest super steel' or designer's name stamped on it (Elishewitz is very good, but you know what i mean). Mora is wielded and used by more people, in more work situations, with fewer dollars spent or traded, than anything comparable when it comes to fine knives with a reputable forge and design. You can get a Mora fixed blade for 10-12 bucks! Don't tell me a folding locking design requires a TENFOLD price hike. Get real! We need to arm ourselves with a classic tool and make it more accessible to young or financially less sound people, because it is basic tool we have perfected for thousands of years without modern marketing. AND we need to RETAIN skill of how to sharpen the blades, because not everyone can afford the latest Worksharp contraption, or have a garage with bench grinders and whatnot, or know how to practice the old whetstone method. Sharpen with the best sharpening system you have, but don't pay exorbitant prices for a blade you think you 'won't need to sharpen.'
    Yes i know some people collect knives and have quite a bit of money but we should be sharing GOOD DESIGN and fair prices especially amidst the artificial inflation and collapse of the global economy we are seeing. I hope your grandkids can go find a well made knife with their CBDCs down the road, if they are good citizens who probably wouldnt need a knife anyway. Lol yeah right.
    A very compelling video, very well done. Salud to you from the USA
    i think this page might be argumentative if anyone does read it, but i am not disparaging the channel here or Hogue, cause they both seem very excellent and why im compelled to share some passion and personal thoughts should be challenged or corrected if my writing is incorrect etc. Pretty sure im glad i found this excellent dude's channel and pretty sure this Hogue will by my first non-BM axis lock, despite some apparent flaws. Looks like a good knife to me , one i can handle just fine, and im sure they'll improve it over the months, years, and hopefully make em more affordable hahahah
    if it is a dumb post ill edit or delete but think some points could be made?

    You might already know this but if you don’t, I have found that steels around S30v and up shouldn’t be touched with the ceramic stone on the Worksharp. I was wondering why my edges weren’t as good on the higher end steels and found out that the ceramic stone actually dulls super steels!
    I stop at the 800 stone now and get crazy sharp edges. Using the 800 stone with water and Dawn dish detergent mixed in produces a mirrored, razor sharp edge.
    But you have to buy the upgrade kit to get the 800 stone or buy the Hapstone 4” holder and Venev stones.

    Yeah, Hogue lock are super stiff and too sharp for finger comfort. Also, bugouts come in m390 and s90v, with good handles and high prices. Magnacut excels at being thin, this blade would outperform a lot of steel with a 15° or a 14° edge... (did 15 on my m4 freek, no microbevel, that was too thin so it chipped, but magnacut is lower hrc and higher toughness, it should handle it graciously.)

    I seem to recall someone mentioning that certain steels that are high in vanadium carbides don't hone as well on ceramics because the vanadium carbines are harder than the ceramic. Same with chromium oxide strops, the chromium oxide wears away the steel matrix but not the hard carbines. This causes the end steel matrix to be more susceptible to micro chips. Could be why ceramics don't work that well on high vanadium steels. Personally, S90V is a nightmare on the worksharp field sharpener hone, I much prefer to just go straight off the diamond, then to diamond compound strops.

    Nice it’s great for the money, check out some new ti scales for it bc that will make it unbeatable I think in it’s class. Mine was terrible at first until I sharpened away what I assume was burnt edge but now seems pretty good it’s holding a fine edge still after a decent cardboard slicing session. I wonder what hrc is on these I’m sure it’s not the 64 I’d like it to be. I will say it’s pretty tough too, I hit it on steel by accident and barely got any damage I was surprised.
