Great vid Mike! As someone else mentioned, the old gas valve is a step opening valve, the valve that comes with the kit is a standard opening valve. While it will run the same, it’s opening character is different. Burnham specs the step opening valve to establish some draft through the boiler before full flame operation. Your light off did look fine, and I commend your thoughness with the combustion test; I only mention it because you are so thoughrow. I have seen contractors in court due to modification of an appliance, it’s not a great time. Again, not knocking you, just some people are not aware of the legality in our overly litigious society these days! Keep up the great work my friend

Mike does it really save you all that much money switching from standing pilot to electronic ignition? I have a standing pilot furnace and was wondering if converting would save anything. I did a test years ago and cut off the gas to the furnace in the summer and my bill barely went down...and yes I'm a hvac tech so I could do this to my furnace...but only if it would save a lot. Another good thing is it would limit the chances of burning a hole In the metal going to HX from having a constant flame on!

Not sure if you answer questions but if so, I’m no boiler expert with that being said . I had to install a boiler & it ran fine for about a month & when the temps dropped for some reason the transformer keeps burning up/ blowing on the 24 volt side. My boss seems to think it’s the way the zoning is wired but like I said b4 it was all working until the temp dropped. Is this something u might have came across b4. It’s only 2 zones & they are on a separate transformer that’s transformer is fine it’s the transformer for the control board.

Nice work Mike! I am from Da Boogie Down but I have a house up in Saratoga, NY that I will need to do this. I have an 80% Bryant hot air heat exchanger furnace with a pilot light. That damn thing is kicking ever since 1994 but I sometimes find myself having to take that 3 hr trip in the dead of winter to light that pilot light. I replace the thermocouple every October. So it's not the thermocouple. This only happens on high wind days/nights. What would you recommend for the replacement valve and retrofit kit?

I have been in the plumbing heating and hvac service business for over 40 years, yes licensed. The main two things I would fire any of my technicians for is scare tactic sales and bashing other companies, you tagged both. Tools are for testing, yet I think that is not the case here. I think you use tools for increasing sales. What do you think techs use when they can’t afford expensive tools. In the case of stack temperature and draft test, it can be done simply with a smoke test and have done that for many years prior to purchasing Testo equipment. This along with many other tasks were completed way before the gadgets of today, I wouldn’t be so eager to discount them.
