    As somebody who actually works with CMY I can assure that the Magenta and Cyan are not supposed to look so dark. They’re bright pigments, magenta should look pinkish, not wine, and cyan should look like a bright blue, not that muddy blue. The mixed colors then look way better with good CMY paint

      That's because 1- They're acryla gouache, so acrylics that you can work as gouache but as soon they're dry, they have a matte tint like acrylics and are harder to remove with water (like watercolors and gouache) and
      2- that primary magenta have PR122 (Quinacridone Magenta) while the "pinkish magenta/cold red" you might be thinking is the Carmine (PR170-Naphthol Red) in this set. Checking on pigment info in your traditional stuff helps you to know which pigment works better for your palette. Look for Dr Ono Kano or In Liquid Color channels. They explains a bit better what I said.

    There's a video in UA-cam that explains why the ryb and cmy were different (because there are warm and cold tones on the primary colors) and explains why if you mix a warm color with a cold color gets you a muddy tone or a vibrant color. Since then, I use only these six colors on my palette to get certain shade of green, orange or purple.

    The way the yellow is super clean is just pure magic to me. HOW? I feel like I can clean my brushes 10 times and there will still be a tiny bit of other colors on it that just makes the yellow look dirty. Also "It's Important to swatch..." I feel called out. LOL. I recently started swatching before painting ANY artpiece and yes: It's a game changer.

      Pro tip; use separate brushes when you have lighter colors that you don't want to get muddy. Also use 2 pots of water; a cleaning one that you'll use for getting rid of the biggest mess. Then use the rinsing pot to make sure no residue is left on the brush.

    • @weholdparties
      @weholdparties 3 роки тому +15

      I highly recommend getting brush soap to keep you brushes clean and to shape them so they don’t get frayed/ruined. It’s also best practice to avoid getting paint on/in the ferrule (the metal part connecting the bristles to the handle) because it can end up contaminating your other colors.

    • @Nehu_22

  • @Alpha13Wolf

    I love how the piece turned out and your focus on the primaries themselves.
    For anyone who wants to know: The best way to decide on which primaries to use is to consider the transparency of the medium. The more transparent CMY, opaque RYB. The reason being is that the pigments do tend to be transparent; so if you want opacity it’s better to avoid cmy. Also the Magenta could’ve been lighter shade it was a little dark; A light or medium hue magenta would be ideal. Process magenta is based of Red #3 food dye which is a coolish pink. A simple way to see if it’s the right shade is yellow and magenta should result in red when mixed, cyan and magenta should be blue. And yes the three primary counterparts are exactly that y=y c=b and r=m.

    Loving all the gouache pieces lately, I feel like your art style was made for it.
    A few years back I took a watercolor mixing class on Skillshare (by Denise Soden, I recommend it to anyone trying to bone up on their color mixing basics) and for one of the class projects I made two color wheels using unconventional primary triads (Buff Titanium, Cerulean Blue, Quinacridone Rose for a warm pastel palette, Raw Sienna, Prussian Blue and Venetian Red for a deep earthy palette). I really had a blast exploring the different ways I could create different moods for a piece with just three colors. This video reminded of that feeling. :) Maybe I'll break out my paints again soon.

    Since there’s a lot of befuddlement surrounding the magenta I thought I’d look up the pigment information out of curiosity and maybe provide some insight into the matter. Turns out Holbein’s Primary Magenta is made from PR122 which is Quinacridone Red. Because there’s no universality between manufacturers two paints can say they’re magenta and be comprised of completely different pigments. Winsor & Newton’s magenta for example is made from PR173 and PV2. You might want to try to find something with PR202 (Quin Magenta), although it’s interesting to note that Daniel Smith uses Quin Rose as their cool mixing red (PV-19, a purple/violet pigment). I think Alizarin Crimson is a lovely cool red, but not quite as purple as a typical magenta.
    Rather than the Primary Magenta (D190) Holbein sells, you may have better luck with their normal Magenta (D115) which is much lighter and more pink.

    • @wayfaringspacepoet
      @wayfaringspacepoet 3 роки тому

      this is a really fascinating comparison! do you have any info on Turner's Rose pigment? I know it's made using a fluorescent PV19 but there's a level of warmth that distinguishes it from other magenta tones

    • @weholdparties
      @weholdparties 3 роки тому

      @@wayfaringspacepoet If it’s PV-19 then it’ll be Quin Rose, but its processing can make it different. There are some pigments that can look like completely different colors just on the basis of being ground more finely! So unless we know what their processing is like it’s hard to say really.

    As someone who works in offset printing, I handle CMYK inks daily. If you use the magenta more lightly (a thinner coat), it may come out a more true magenta. When heavily layered, magenta can come out nearly red. Same goes for the cyan. The more you layer (and the higher the ink density), the darker the colour.

    Didn't saw a comment that said this, but neither are real primary sets. Magenta should be a very vibrant pink and cyan is so bright iz kinda looks like turquoise.
    Cmyk is the primary set for Pigments, like paint. RYB is not a primary set. Red, Blue and Green is the primary set for light. Bc if u mix these colors with light, u get Cyan, Magenta and Yellow. And the other way around, if u mix CMY together, you should get RGB. But your cmyk side made only purple, and orange. And it should not. So that how u can tell a good primary set from a bad one.

    In my opinion the real primaries are cmy cause you can't mix a magenta out of ryb or a bright cyan.
    So cmy are primaries and therefore red blue and green are secondaries. The clue is, that red green blue are primary of light. So there is a connection between light colors and paint. Just watch a few videos with light color experiments you'll see how they mix cmy out of light.

    Your mixing palette with the cloud is so cute! Where did you get it? Or did you make it yourself? 🥺

    Kasey, did you see the washi tape booklet in Rin's latest video? It would be so cool to see you doing some more of your washi art with it.

    I only have cmyk (+ white) gouache sets and it's all I ever need. idk why your cmy was so thin, tho, I've never had that problem before, that's super weird.
