Personally I find pans more convenient but QoR (my favorite watercolors) come in tubes!

So true, I hated watercolours till I got good quality ones for my bday 6 years ago. Now they are my fav medium, and when I forgot to take them on some vacation I went to local stores but couldn't find art store. So I bought some higher quality school set for funz, but it wasnt fun, lack of ability to layer, colours washing eachother off and creating mud. I rather pay this euro for tiniest little square of paint rather than have those cheap liquid chalks

I definitely wasn't expecting the pans to be better than the tubes! I prefer the pan colours too, as you can always water them down. Also, they don't seem to have that chalky finish and you'd think if that was going to happen, the pans would be more chalky.
This test really demonstrates how much paper quality matters and can even make dollar store paints look acceptable.

  • @mintymarinara

In all honesty I wasn't really surprised by the pan watercolors. I have a similar watercolor pan set that I bought a year ago from Daiso (Japanese Dollar Store) and they work beautifully. Little to no chalkiness, bright and earthy colors, and good layering and mixing. Only downside I have is the plastic palette it comes in started falling apart after a few trips outside, but still not bad for the price. I also agree that the brushes in Japanese dollar stores are pretty good quality, especially if you're a beginner.
    Love your review Kasey! 😊🎨❤

  • @angelicadiabolus

Huh that’s strange, the dollar store watercolour tubes I used are different and more vibrant actually. They’re also kinda easier to use. Maybe it has something to do with brand? I got mine from Daiso instead of Seria, maybe that’s why.

    Fun fact about watercolours:
There are a few different terms for them in German.
There are "Wasserfarben" which just means water colour. A bit of an umbrella term and the closest translation.
But then we have the word Aquarelle and Deckfarben.
The first is typically the more high quality, transparent water colours, like winsor & newton sells etc.
The second literally means something like "covering colours". It's the cheaper water colours that are really not that transparent. They're chalky(as in, literally often contain chalk as a filler), they can actually cover each other and at least here are often sold with a tube of white paint that resembles gouache.
Children often use those chalkier paints in school, but artists rarely use them. They are hard to control, way more splotchy, the colour just kind of sits ontop of the paper, rather than being at least in part being absorbed by the paper.
It's easier to distinguish paints this way, but you can often see it by looking at pan watercolours.
If the pans already look matte and a bit like a chalk hockey puck, it's the chalky stuff, the better kind typically has a slightly shiny surface and the pan looks darker than the colour that ends up on the page.

Most professional paints come in tubes. The best (opinions will always vary) pans are “poured” from the same mixture. QoR are a bit to hard to control some people like that about them. I know Windsor & Newton has separate recipes but I gotta say I never liked them much, in either form! I hope your enjoying your time in Japan, How are the book ideas going?? Nudge, Nudge! Take care and enjoy!

I wasn’t expecting the pan to be better :O

I don't know why, but when you were testing them, I preferred the pan. For the drawing? I preferred the tubes. Maybe I'm just weird...

Where I live we have acrylic paint tubes that i have tested out against $50 acrylic tubes and the $1 is worse than the .50 ones at walmart and I like the .50 ones at walmart better

I bought cheap tube colors and a cheap pan, still use the pan to this day and gave the tubes away to my friend’s son.

I was scrolling through the description to see if you listed where exactly you got these from & I see you're from Victoria! I was born there & always an island girl at heart. James Bay is beautiful! Love the houses there. So anyway, where did you get the pan set from? It really was quite pretty.
