A comic book artist (Ben Affleck) falls in love with a woman (Joey Lauren Adams) before finding out that she is a lesbian.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
After a pair of films about hipster slackers, the work of writer-director Kevin Smith matured and gained critical respect with this low budget, independent comedy-drama about love, sex and the fine line between the two. Ben Affleck stars as Holden McNeil, a New Jersey comic book writer who is roommates with his best friend and professional partner, artist Banky Edwards (Jason Lee). Their hit comic book series, "Bluntman and Chronic," is loosely patterned after a pair of acquaintances, Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (played by Smith), two characters already familiar as supporting players in several Smith films. Into Holden's life comes Alyssa Jones (Joey Lauren Adams), a lesbian and fellow comic book creator who quickly becomes a close friend, although Holden is powerfully attracted to her. Eventually, Alyssa realizes that she is attracted to Holden as well and they begin a physical relationship, much to the consternation of Banky, whose ire over losing his best friend to a lesbian seems to border on romantic jealousy. After he learns something about Alyssa's sexual past, however, Holden's immature response to his new knowledge destroys both his romance with Alyssa and his friendship with Banky. Chasing Amy (1997) was the third film in what Smith referred to as his "New Jersey series," films set at least partly in the Garden State and featuring the Jay and Silent Bob characters.

I thought romantic movie usually targets women. This one seems to target men as the market. Turning a lesbian into straight is definitely a fantasy.
Trailer is. But movie is less about male fantasy and more about slut shaming.
Jason Lee's character slut-shames (along with his homophobic outbursts) out of his own insecurities about himself -- and is called out for it. Ben Affleck's character slut-shames when he's trying to hurt her -- again, out of his own insecurities -- and he loses her because of it. This movie is about male inadequacy. This movie works for both women and men, but it's the men that might (hopefully) learn a lesson from it.

Good point about her friends -- I didn't think of that scene in that way, but you're right, they do it, too. Still, Ben Affleck and Jason Lee's characters are at the center of the story, and they're both totally insecure. Joey Lauren Adams is there, too, but she's the most mature of the bunch -- doesn't really have issues like they do.

As a teenager the plot of this annoyed me. I didn't get why the characters (including Alyssa herself) made such a big deal about her being a lesbian and falling for a man. Not once did she or any other character question the possibility that maybe she was bisexual rather than flat out gay. Even if that wasn't the case it was never even touched upon. I loved the film as a teen in the 90s but that kinda bugged me back then. Oh well lol..still love this film, trailer does it no justice whatsoever. Despite being young when it was released i related a lot to Joey Lauren Addams character and as a bisexual teen I was going through some drama/love triangle at the time and this movie captured a lot of those feelings of confusion and heartache perfectly. Now as an adult I can appreciate it for many other reasons as well. Great movie, terrible trailer.
I think this movie was just reflecting the times and how straight men and lesbians alike did not understand the concept of bisexuality. The director of this movie was inspired by a scene in Go Fish where a lesbian character fears backlash from her lesbian friends that they would shame her for sleeping with a man. Just as it was unfair for Holden to judge Alyssa's sexual history, it is unfair for lesbians to shame bi-curious or bisexual women. This movie was so ahead of its time that there wasn't even a clear enough understanding of bisexuality to label her behavior with. Overall this movie is meant to explore the complicated nuances of sexuality and that not everything is black and white.

chiming in from the lesbian persepective, its because you have to fight off male advances all the time, people telling you 'you haven't met the right guy yet'. and so if you did actually meet the right guy, as it were, you would be proving so many bigots right in a way.
Interesting how as recently as 1997, the film's marketers felt like they had to tiptoe around the fact that she's gay -- only insinuating it, but never even mentioning it directly or using the words "gay" or "lesbian" in the trailer just to appeal to a broader audience.
Yeah now people pick their genders and assume that's normal too.
There's a difference between showing the audience and telling them.

This was in the criterion collection, along with clerks. I don't know what happened to kevin smith, but even roger ebert said he was a great future filmmaker. He was really good.

Ok I hope that's enough to hide the spoiler, but in the end he doesn't get the girl, they try to be together but he can't handle her sexual past and he's holding her back (she's not so much lesbian, she's bi-sexual with a strong preference for women). It teaches a great lesson in love and entitlement. Sometimes we try our best but they will never love us back. We must learn to move on and treat others with respect.

it really is an insightful movie. such a great representation of sexuality. it shows that for some people sexual orientation is a fluidity, not one thing or another. It's the person that matters, not the act.

Yeah this movie was way ahead of it’s time. The movie might’ve been marketed that way but the message was clear when you watch it. Not everything is as black and white as it seems. And wether or not it was Kevin Smith’s true intention he opened the door for people to question their sexuality and if they truly identify they way they do or if there’s no need for a labels on your sexuality. This movie was way ahead of it’s time and the studios probably didn’t know how to market it or who to really marketed to. So they just went with what you basically said, but the trailer is nothing like the actual plot of the movie. She was like a bisexual with a heavy tendency to go for women mostly. So mostly lesbian tendencies with a side of men if the guys right.

I always wondered what happened to the actress who played Amy, I thought that would be her break out hit and she would turn out to be the next big name actress but she just disappeared after that. I think the last film she was ever in was an Adam Sandler film.

Joey Lauren Adams plays Alyssa Jones.
She nearly didn't get the role here and she was dating the producer/writer/director. I can't even say if she's a good actress or not, but it seems everyone including herself (accordingly to an interview I read with her) agrees with that:
Her *voice* happened to her career. Her voice is awfully annoying. She said herself she lost a ton of roles because of her voice.
She's been on a few TV series and had some roles on minor movies but, yeah, her career never took off.
She actually got a Golden Globe nomination for this role.

What I never got about this movie...it was good and all..and I love Joey Lauren Adams.....but what kind of guy is so hung up on his gf's past behavior? I mean seriously...get over it already. One thing you never ask a woman is how many people she has slept with....you may think you want to know...but you don't. And add to that.....most dudes like me have been with how many women in how many ways? I pause to recall that.....so NEVER ask a woman about her sexual history.....unless it's some kind of kinky turn on...lol...
Love the low key bragging you snuck in... masterfully done ;). All kidding aside, and know this is a VERY old comment but just for the benefit of anyone who sees this and wonders the same thing. Kevin Smith has said the movie was inspired by him and Joey Lauren Adams (who was his actual girlfriend at the time) relationship, where he found out she had been more adventerous before meeting her then he did and felt unworthy and it strained their relatioship.
Although apparently, and this is from both of them, the catalyst with them was he found out she went backpacking across Europe after college (I think it was after college, some time before he met her) and apparently felt unworthy... makes Holden getting hung up on what he did almost rational, because seriously how insecure are you. (I know that is judgemental but I mean really... the dude had done 2 movies and was a script doctor of who knows how many films living the LA life and he is that threatened by something like that?)

This movie was way ahead of it’s time. This trailer is very misleading for how the movie actually is. It was ahead of it’s time because human sexuality has evolved since this time. Not everyone needs labels and love sometimes knows no boundaries. Back then everyone thought it was black and white and now everything isn’t so black and white and some people just don’t need labels for how they love.

@@ennuiblue4295 Right, he also mentioned in the DVD commentary he had a friend of his who was a published author and a lesbian go over it to make sure he didn't send a bad message or portray lesbians badly. Now obviously one lesbian endorsing it doesn't mean he succeeded nessecarily, lesbians are not a hive mind that are all unanimously offended or not offended by the same exact things. But seems clear he did not come from a place of homophobia, and clearly the characters making those comment were portrayed as being in the wrong. Do agree probably would not be made today but don't know if it is fair to say the movie was endorsing homophobia.

You mean the movie or the trailer? Because the movie is an emotional trainwreck (though, I don't want to overhype it for you, so to be honest, most of it isn't spectacular, but boy is it a good ride overall), but the trailer is just a trainwreck.

Possibly the most overrated movie of all time. I watch all genre of movies but this was especially bad. The female lead has a weird voice she sounds like a disney rescue ranger mouse then there is the prat in the hat. I suppose only a prat in a hat would chase Amy as everyone else would find her to annoying and run the other way. The movie is painfully cringy the plot is painfully overused and the execution was 💩. Watch something decent like the king of staten island or the florida project. Sometimes going back to watch old films you once thought were good will really disappoint you and I sound disappointed. I like this before my brain grew. I like daft movies but not dumb movies.
