CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Holden (Ben Affleck) professes his love for Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
After a pair of films about hipster slackers, the work of writer-director Kevin Smith matured and gained critical respect with this low budget, independent comedy-drama about love, sex and the fine line between the two. Ben Affleck stars as Holden McNeil, a New Jersey comic book writer who is roommates with his best friend and professional partner, artist Banky Edwards (Jason Lee). Their hit comic book series, "Bluntman and Chronic," is loosely patterned after a pair of acquaintances, Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (played by Smith), two characters already familiar as supporting players in several Smith films. Into Holden's life comes Alyssa Jones (Joey Lauren Adams), a lesbian and fellow comic book creator who quickly becomes a close friend, although Holden is powerfully attracted to her. Eventually, Alyssa realizes that she is attracted to Holden as well and they begin a physical relationship, much to the consternation of Banky, whose ire over losing his best friend to a lesbian seems to border on romantic jealousy. After he learns something about Alyssa's sexual past, however, Holden's immature response to his new knowledge destroys both his romance with Alyssa and his friendship with Banky. Chasing Amy (1997) was the third film in what Smith referred to as his "New Jersey series," films set at least partly in the Garden State and featuring the Jay and Silent Bob characters.

I think the biggest misconception of this speech is that he saying it to win the girl, but it’s actually him saying it because he knows that’s probably never going to happen and he is expelling her from his life with no feelings left inside but all on the table
Been there.. felt good but it did hurt things with the other person.
Exactly
yep. i was actually surprised when it ended up working.
Bingo, same thoughts. But to be honest being older now and thinking back to those days it’s a completely selfish move, only done to make the speaker feel better
@@kevinwasilewski598 But would it have been better for him to sit and have those feelings eat him up inside while continuing to hang out with her? She clearly valued her friendship with him. If he were to just stop hanging out with her without giving her some kind of satisfactory explanation, I doubt she would have liked or accepted that. Remember she came all the way to his place in Jersey to bawl him out for ditching her because he found out she was a lesbian. Him telling her like this might not have been fair to her, but him being forced to swallow his feelings just to not risk losing her would also have been terribly unfair to him.
I can't believe Kevin Smith wrote this shit. It's perfect. It's so accurate.
Kevin wad amazing...
Unfortunately i don't think he can do this now...i absolutely loved this and Jersey Girl.
Kevin must have lived it or saw people go through just this moment
Just imagine if she had giggled and sputtered after speech that because he was so "heavy" and "intense". That's what a Gen-Y or Gen-Z girl would do halfway through the speech, guaranteed. "Hahahahaha duuuuude, don't get so serious and cheesy, chill out!"
Weed killed his writing brain cells. Don't get me wrong I love to smoke sometimes but that's when I noticed his writing gradually started getting worse. I think his younger self would be appalled by his recent movies.
SERIOUSLY!!! One of my FAVORITE MOVIES EVER
Best declaration of love in movie history I have ever seen. I love the way his voice is trembling and his expression
Agreed. Check out Jim telling Pam he loves her from 'The Office'...another good scene.
Same
Yes Agreed
And lloyd dobbler in say anything....
Kevin smith wrote some great lines there
This scene could've easily been cheesy as hell if not for Affleck's amazing delivery and performance.
Who knew 17 years later he would be batman
Me
Sorriest one of all... cept for adam west
I did this and had my heart broken but I regret nothing.
just like the movie i bet. Regret comes after many years too though...not out of those woods just yet. Also not too late to change things...Balls in your trembling hands there Keith...its yours and its in play big ghuy...
Because this simp nonsense doesn`t work with women...
I do! Because of me, I eradicated the connection my crush said she felt like we had! 😂😂😂 Now I've accepted the fact that every girl I see has a boyfriend, my crush has a boyfriend, and learn to live and die alone!
@GamesGoodBeeBad exactly never put yourself out there, you'll just have her ignore you and never tell you she doesn't want too keep you. Only way too keep her is being distant and emotionless. Learn from those who believed in love and realize it's a miserable lie, the more you ignore the more they want from you.
@GamesGoodBeeBad
Missed the point of the scene then.
This movie is great. So much passion and love in 90's films. You just don't get that kind of passion in romances now-a-days
Love indie films, just goes to show you don't need millions and millions of dollars to tell a good story.
i think they're 1,000 times better than blockbusters, but i'm biased.
The Best admission of love I've ever heard.
This is a great scene. Very well written and acted. There are two scenes in this movie where Alyssa is totally irate. Her character is very emotionally volatile. One minute she loves Holden intensely, and the next she is screaming at and hitting him. Makes me think of Borderline Personality Disorder. In the rain scene, when Alyssa tells Holden to go home, and he's walking back to his car, you can see his reflection in a window he passes. For a brief second you can see the reflection of Joey Lauren Adams quickly and closely following Ben Affleck, which of course had to be done so they could film the sequence in one continuous shot. The movements of the actors had to be blocked and timed just right so as not to tamper with the all-important pacing. Really cool tidbit of filmmaking, and adds to the low budget charm of the film as a whole. The real star of the movie is the dialogue, and the film has the feeling of a stage play adapted for the big screen.
This scene made me admire Kevin Smith as a writer so much. He's one of my favorite directors. And chasing Amy is one of my favorite movies Because of this scene
Ben affleck makes me melt here. Seriously ugh😭💕
Him: "I love you*
Directors: que the lightening.
This is the best love monologue I’ve ever heard in a movie
Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman
Kevin Smith just knows how to capture the way real people talk.
I had a woman like this, whom I loved, and she played the game too. She wanted to test the waters in our relationship, but got cold feet when she pushed the boundaries. We are still friends, and I regret nothing.
Felt the same. I fell in love with a girl whos best friend told me that she was bi but everyone else said she was a lesbian. I finally told her I was in love with her, and she shot me down and told me to never speak to her again.
Damn.
I’m sorry it went that way. Hopefully you’re both doing better even if you never reconcile as friends or even acquaintances anymore.
😢 Bummer
Chasing Amy - Best written Kevin Smith movie & best emotional Ben Affleck movie especially the scenes where he pours his heart or Joey Lauren Adams call him a dope for not accepting her past. ❤️
This is true great flirted what he said. This is what I wanted to see romance movie. Is give me big heart of lesson.
I love how they just cut out the bottom part of the speech. Good job guys
If you have a partner, let them know if you feel this way. Expressions and acts of true love can not only make their day, it can make their life too.
that lightning strike.
I was in love with a girl she was a lesbian I loved her for 8 years dated her for 4 years and she never loved me it fucking hurt
#rekt
At least you got a chance to date her and she eventually couldn't feel the same for you because of her orientation. Not because she didn't want to. I loved a girl for 5 years (maybe I still do), I almost died twice to save her life, I was always there, and she has told me things that were one step away from us getting together. But I never had a chance. Now she is with my clone, a guy that acts, talks and looks at her like me. Imagine trying to get a girl and realizing she's been rejecting you all that time to end up with another version of you (which is hard to be found in my case).
Plot twist she wasn't gay.
GlassHalfFool I know
If there’s a 1% chance he is our enemy...😂😂
And this is from the mind of Kevin Smith a hopless romantic who found his woman ...
Been there long time ago. Loved a lesbian and she said she had feelings for me at one point. Never dated, never had sex. I stole a long kiss and moved away. She got married to a woman when they legalized gay marriage in Texas. She's happy so I am happy for her. There I spilled my guts now you can make fun of me. 😔
No Name Nah, bro...good story! I once fell for a lesbian, until I knew she was a lesbian...then it all went downhill from there
Something like that hapened tome around 2007/8. Bisexual so not exactly the same, but everything else you described was pretty close.
aw dude. I'm so sorryy man ^
Been there no name.
It's a bitter pill to swallow.
Hope it stings less these days bro.
And that she doesn't still cross your mind daily..
Nobody will make fun of you, bro!! Sadly, many people are expiriancing that kind of love. Waste of time, I might say......
Dear lord I just realized I used about 50 percent of this when I declared my Love to my fiancé
this movie was quite the educational experience, for real. luckily, the idiot gear never kicked in, not once.
She’ll step out on you. Especially now that you’ve given her validation and proven yourself whipped. Best be prepared for that. I’m sorry in advance.
Kevin smith's best movie. God I miss the 90s
I've been on both sides of this. More times on the Alyssa side, than the Holden side.
Both are rough....
HellBlazerRaiser Holden's side is the worst haha
yeah the Holden side is way worse
I said this speech to a man that I loved once and he replied “Aw that’s nice.” Lol.
This scene rules.
This is my second favorite Kevin Smith movie besides Clerks.
CT Dawg also, a great Miramax romcom like Beautiful Girls with Timothy Hutton, Matt Dillon, Mira Sorvino, Uma Thurman and Rosie O’Donnell
Kevin smith is an absolute master 👌🏻
Chasing you
You can't chase what you already have......❤❤❤
Her character was clueless but that just made her more loveable and appealing.
What He Should've said; "Cool points are out the Window, and you got me all twisted up in the Game"
This movie is like the story of my recent relationship. . . That is why every time I watch this movie, it is like watching my life story . .. Truly nostalgic :)
+ + +
Shit, same bro. Sucks, :/
You fell in love with a lesbian
This scene gets me everytime. I'm like siiiiiggghhh everytime I watch it. I love this scene.
How to get out of the FriendZone : )
lol when he says i love you the thunder hits in the background, sure thst was by design.
Crazy how this movie was considered progressive at the time and now everybody seems to hate it.
kevin smith’s best movie by quite a bit. although clerks just has that raw indie feel to it i can’t get enough of
I can't stop thinking about this movie I love it so much
i use to hate Ben Affleck, until i recently watched this movie, he's a decent actor.
Affleck was the bomb in Phantoms yo.
watch the town
As a highschooler when I saw this. I felt this hard back when it came out, when my best friend was a lesbian.
I love you
(Thunderclap)
The peak of Kevin Smith's career. Nothing even half as good as this 22 years later. What a tragedy.
How did we come from this... to Clerks 3?
Out of all of Ben Affleck’s performances, this is his best one ever! Holden’s confession of his love to Alyssa is so satisfying yet so heart-stopping knowing he may never win her heart relates to me so much, even though I never had a relationship but I am in so many positions with girls I like, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic I wanted to just let it all out. It may hurt our friendship but you just have got to go for it. It’s now or never!
1:40 That is pure rage. You never want a girl to look at you like that. That is a look of white hot hatred of burning……hate
Been there done that. Many times. And looking back it's one of the best things I've ever done.
@@michaelcook6889 glaring at someone is the best thing you’ve ever done?
kevin smith is *basically* shakespeare 💅🏼
Sarah Anna modern day Shakespeare I must say
This exactly how I feel RIGHT now. I'm so into this girl at my school and we're best friends. Coincidentally, her name is also Alissa. I really really like her and she's shot me down three times, but some stupid part of me tells me to keep holding out and waiting.
guitarman122508 don’t do it man
Its been 7 years anything happen since then
@@aceofspades5003 now I gotta know
well did you finally get her man?
I am forever changed because of who you are and what you've meant to me
The lightning strike was so prefect
Joey sounds so much like Renée Zellwegger !
"So you're tellin' me there's a chance... YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!"
I’m watching this movie on Netflix I was wondering why it wasn’t popular or more known. Then I read the plot. What’s weird and funny and what I watched it was because first I love 90’s movies. 2 I also fell in love with a lesbian like this. But she ended up being with a female. But the whole chase I know how this feels how it all feels other than to win the girl. When they started dating I got so happy for him. Wishing my situation could have ended like this.
I wish I could pull this off. There is no better explanation of the way I feel about Janessa out there.
This made me cry like a babbie.
Eveyone did know that feeling, for once at least when you stand next to that person and everything what you will do might be the last one you ever do and whatever it happens you will loose but netherway you say that without fear or thinking it just that one moment of truth where you can win or loose.
Can't lie - swap the genders, and this is the exact conversation I could have with my gay friend if I didn't value his friendship so highly.
Ayo it's been 3 years did you do it?
They cut out the best line
I love my best friend and I fell in love with her.
That's batman now.
awesome scene
Ben is really good with these long speeches and there is a reason why Kevin gives them to him and no one else. Just watch J&SB Reboot. You'll see at the end.
Yeah I was surprised that I actually liked that movie.
And “Dogma”. Bartleby’s speech to Loki about humans and angels - fantastic performance by Affleck.
This why Batman is single
This is so accurate for my life with a girl from my church.
you & me both .i dont think it works when girls pull it , we just look desperate not romantic .
Yep, guilty -- stole this speech, too
🤚🏼right here guilty!
ah ulan be
I feel exactly the same way about someone right now..shes a lesbian but whenever im with her i feel alive inside..and it fucking sucks. knowing that there might not be any chance for us..due to our own personal likes...it sucks man
9 years later what ended up happening?
DEJA VU
I'm batman
You know what I don't get? How everybody (rightly) praises this scene for its passion and intensity ignoring its cheesiness while blasting Anakin's fireplace monologue confessing his love for Padme in Attack of the Clones. I don't see that much of a difference between the two. If anyone has a definitive answer for why this scene is so much worse, I'd like to know.
***** I think Anakin understood it was cheesy and awkward, hence the awkward delivery, but to each their own, ;)
Because the acting between Hayden Christensen (poor) and Ben Affleck (great) is about as far apart as like...a galaxy far far away!
it worked for me...
I relate to this story, only difference is that the girl I loved is Mormon. Hopefully one day
He's a smooth talker isn't he
When I saw this movie (as a 16 year-old high school Junior) this scene inspired be able to one day have the ability to make an articulate, romantic statement like this… now as a 30-Something adult, I have that ability, I’m a single dad… but I’m still searching for the _slow clap_ moment _(Not Another Teen Movie reference)_
1:10 How the hell was that not intentional...i mean c'mon.
What? The sigh? Of course everything it's intentional. It's called acting choices.
You're like the perfect gf
did you watch this movie
I love this movie.
But people don't talk like that in real life. And that's why the dialogue in this movie while good is hard to take seriously.
+HappilyWithMonotony its what i love about kevin smiths movies to be honest. if i dig these characters, gimme that movie dialogue man. i eat that shit up.
Kevin Smith loves his monologues. And I love them too.
shit like this happened to me tho
The only people who can talk like this in real life are those who are good with words - poets, songwriters etc (I know this from personal experience). Considering Holden writes comic books, it fits.
HappilyWithMonotony it's a work of art, a manifestation of Holden's feelings. Don't take it conpletely literally. And besides, I have said this kind of a speech to a girl I was crazy about one time, so it is somewhat realistic
I said this type of thing to a chick once and it went wrong! But she got jelly when I talked to other women. It sucks .
God damnit i know this feeling
thanks for the optimism. I'm about to bust this speech on a girl tomorrow. Tell you how it goes in the evening.

i realized Amy is also the name in Gone Girl
Sucky feeling
Daniella Perez oh you naughty naughty little girl! Lol... Oh, you mean it wasn't that? Oh...my bad! Sorry
Ben's teeth weren't so good back then
Normal. Hollywood makes you go overboard with fakeness. His were probably really good for normal teeth.
This is so incredibly disrespectful to who she is. The audacity. Not surprised it’s made by a man. And the only reason he feels this way is because he can’t have her.
This movie is so bad holy shit why....
+Triz Botelho This movie is amazing......
He knew this would destroy the friendship. But it was too baponfil to keep bottled up any longer
