When you said the podcast has been going for 5 years I realized that I used to listen to the podcast while mowing my parents lawn in high school and now I listen to it on my way to work as a married woman. The podcast has been the soundtrack of my young adult years. Thank you!
same! i’d just met my boyfriend when the podcast started - i‘m also married to him now - living in my own house with five cats, two dogs and a library room ☀️ thats insane!!!
Since it is the 5 year anniversary of the pod, I would also really like to see a guest interview with CJ. 😊Thank you guys for making this pod one of the best on the internet! ❣
I was at the New York Botanic Garden the other day and was surprised by how many books they had in their gift shop. If Kayley or other people want more gardening/horticulture books, it might be worth checking out, plus you can always visit the Mertz Library!
Garden books!!! Kayley, I loved hearing about all your garden books 🌿🍀🥕🌺 Do you think we could get an insta post with a list of some of your favorites?!
My mother in law who is obessed with chickens / all birds really lives in Nova Scotia. Its only a matter of time until she finds you! She will want these for sure I hope they are for sale!
Those chickens are so cute! And the fact that your mom made them a little satchel and a little book to have in their satchel is so delightful, as well as the funny and cute little tag by your dad. Now I know how you bloomed into the being you are because your parents are just as delightful as you.
I miss Kayley SO MUCH. Her UA-cam channel was the reason as an adult I started reading again. I started with Piranesi and haven't looked back. She was the reason that I found this channel and am forever grateful. It was so nice to see her again as well as with you guys!
Kayley, you might like Glass Houses by Melanie Murphy. I haven't read it yet but I have heard good things. I believe a theme in the book is how gardening and green spaces impact mental health.
I loved hearing about the chickens cause I saw them on the book truck's Instagram posts and was so intrigued! They're so sweet and wholesome! It makes me want to visit to Nova Scotia even more! Ariel can be great for Nova Scotia's tourism! 😄
Great video, love the chickens. I really hope Arial will post your thrifting adventure and house updates. Rayleen sounds like your saturday was full of fun and discovery. You all got some interesting books.
🥔🥔🥔 I am sitting here, watching the pod, and thinking about my own personal potato mountain. Why do I read all the short ones first and then let the long ones linger, even though I know I will like them? I really need to learn to mix it up, lengthwise. Ugh. I will have nothing but GIANT baked potatoes left soon. Potato Mountain is real.
I LOVE the summer book. For everyone that thinks cozy is just for winter, think again. Its short stories but all over one summer with the same characters. Also, me personally, I didn't like the Overstory, but everyone that saw me reading it said they loved it
Another book I enjoyed by Marc Hamer (the mole catcher guy) was the beautifully-written “Spring Rain: A Life Lived in Gardens” (2023).🌱 For those new to him, Hamer is a retired English gardener living in Wales. In the words of Hamer, "Spring Rain is about the joy of your own back garden. It is a story about the joy of small things, the world in a grain of sand, a universe in a small garden, with love for all the insects and slugs and flowers and weeds and seeds and roots and boundaries and shade and weather that the garden contains." Nature writing at its best.
Every time the girls say TOve JAnsson, my heart sinks a little 😅. I understand that this is how you would read her name in English, but it is very far from how it actually sounds: Swedish pronunciation: [ˈtuːve ˈjɑːnsːon]. I thought I'd mention it here as her name is now mentioned in every episode, which is cool as she's amazing ❤❤
Yeah I get you, I also absolutely adore Tove’s work, it feels like a paper plane taking off (yaay they’re mentioning Tove!!) and then it crashes nose first (Toav Jaenson) 🥲
@@louisebacklund4485 I read "The True Deceiver" in a different language, so the English Title didn't initially ring a bell. Then, the more they talked about it, the more it became familiar, and then it just clicked: Who is this Tov Johnson dude, and why did he rip off Tuvee's book? 🤣 Shame on me for not recognising it sooner 😁
i really liked all of kayleys recs! (oh no, my tbr is gonna get bigger once again), when describing her favourites and the kind of books she tends to read, it really reminded me of one of my all time favourites: "this is how you lose the time war", bcs it is queer, also very whimsical (starless sea is definitely my top book ever! and has some same themes and vibes in it), and it has a garden in it. its very probable that kayley has read it already, it was also pretty big everywhere, but i just wanted to mention it, in case theres someone with similar taste.
I feel like the only person that likes summer. I get intense seasonal depression in winter, so when summer is here….idk that heat???? It just makes me feel alive lol.
Omg please please make the Bissett Books t-shirt available! Maybe do it in a different colour or do the art a bit smaller to make it a different version to the official staff ones!
speaking of garden books! 'Modern nature' is an amazing book by Derek Jarman, it's his diaries from 1989 to 1991, if i'm not mistaken, where he chronicles his life in a small cottage as he's creating his films, tending his garden and living witch HIV. he's really passionate about the garden and the flowers, but also talks a lot about his life, art and whatever comes to his mind. it's quite a tough read since he documents the loss of people around him from AIDS as well as his own sickness, but i would highly recommend it!! also i've recently learned that his friends (including the wonderful Tilda Swinton) bought the cottage a few years ago and started an art residency there, where artists can come and finish their book or a script etc BUT ALSO they're welcoming those who want to do something ambitious with the garden. i feel like it's such a perfect thing to do with his legacy
Ariel! If you’re getting into essay collections you HAVE TO read Small Bodies of Water by Nina Mingya Powles!! It’s about swimming and is one of the best I’ve ever read!
Raeleen! I live in LA but I was in Vancouver for a wedding that same Saturday and went to both Massy Books AND the tea shop next door! We probably just missed each other. Small world!!! -- Kate P.S. Massy Books was AMAZING and the staff is so friendly and generous; they gave us recommendations for like 5 other bookstores in the city to visit during our trip.
kayley fits in on the podcast so well, which isn't surprising, but would love if she wants and is able to be on more often!! like even to fill in for one of you gals if you get sick or are away or something 🤷♀ idk but i just enjoyed her vibe so much haha
I know this is a late comment and probably won't be seen but if you're ever in London again Kayley (or anyone else who loves gardens) I recommend the Garden Museum, it's a small museum in an old church that explores gardens and gardening, they have a great book selection and cafe as well.
Kayley, this is an open invitation to talk all things Heartstopper, I have read it all and watched both seasons numerous time. It just makes me so happy.
i feel like i just need a huge list of recommended books from Kayley LOL i'm in my nature book era!! also was thinking "man it sounds like Kayley and Leena would get along great, Ariel should introduce them" and then you mention hearing about Overstory from Leena (which is also who i heard it from hahah) ahh i just read Summer Book and it was just such a perfect little slice of life vignette collection!!
Wooow blast from the past. Not me taking 5 minutes to realize Kayley was that Kayley…from five awesome girls. I used to watch that channel 😂😂😂 that’s crazy.
Love the Tove Jansson haul! I also might have to get to her books soon as I do have The Summer Book and her semi-autobiographical Sculptor's Daughter waiting on my shelf! I got also interested in that biography you got, seems to be a new edition of a book I've seen around,, but I have actually read a finnish authors biography haha :D called Tove Jansson: Work and Love, which I found amazing and beautiful :3 excited to hear more of your thoughts on her works!
I have just finished my mashiest mashed potato book of all time and have immediately rushed to the comments section to inform you guys (after having a lil cry). My mum read Never Let Me Go when it was published, when I was ten years old. I used to pick up her books when she was done with them, but when she explained what this one was about I found the idea so sad that I couldn’t face actually reading it, and actively avoided it whenever I saw it in bookshops since, despite the concept still haunting me. Then, a few years ago I read Remains of the Day by Ishiguro. I fell in love with his writing style and knew I was going to read every book written by him… with dread as I realised that meant finally facing NLMG. Several years of the book sitting on my shelf later, and 19 years after I first thought about picking it up….. I have officially conquered those potatoes!
@ariel: I can relate so much to your current Tove Jansson obsession! I discovered her writing when I studied Swedish but only read the biography earlier this year. I bought the comics and picture books to read to my daughter and we're currently watching the anime series together. The Summer book is my favorite book of hers. Greetings from Germany :)
The chicken with satchel and book! The moment I saw it, I immediately thought that it'd be best placed next to T Kingfisher's books. Nettle & Bone features a demon-possessed chicken Haha but I've heard that some of her other works have chickens too. I know Ariel's considering a cozy fantasy section in the truck--maybe Nettle & Bone could be a good pick. It's a bit dark but it blends cozy, fairy tale and funny elements so well.
As a small business owner, I felt that about the customer…I agree, no judgement because I’m sure I’ve done it before I was on the business side of things, but when I talk to a customer/troubleshoot for an hour and then later hear they bought the item on Amazon! Oof!! 😅😂
Book recommendation for Ariel: Little Village of French Book Lovers by Nina George. There’s a book bus and book club and cute French food and scenery. I just finished it yesterday and it’s heartwarming. Please check out the synopsis.
Book recommendation for Raeleen: You Know You Want This by Kristen Roupenian. It´s such an awesome collection of short stories, unbelievably twisted and fast-paced, in a way that is very reminiscent of Roald Dahl! The stories are quite original in that they unapologetically depict 'unhinged' women, so much so that I believe the book challenges and can be divisive to certain readers.
When you said the podcast has been going for 5 years I realized that I used to listen to the podcast while mowing my parents lawn in high school and now I listen to it on my way to work as a married woman. The podcast has been the soundtrack of my young adult years. Thank you!

Ariel, tell your Mom "Great job on the chickens" for me 😭❤ that's the cutest idea ever.

Five Awesome Girls was the very first youtube channel I watched :) Love seeing Kayley here!
When is CJ, the other Books Unbound employee, going to be a guest on the pod?!!? 😂

Yes! Sounds so strange when Tove is a two-syllable name 😅
Came here to request exactly this: Ariel, PLEASE listen to how her name is correctly pronounced!
YES! This, please please please ❤ and the last name “j” is pronounced as a y basically 😅
