He told a USC film studies class that it was just after 9/11when he saw the original pilot and he took the opening sequence as something like a 9/11 genre horror film. Growing up in the Himalayan tradition this song was a common prayer. I sing it to my children at night. When I heard it in the theme of BSG I was pleasantly surprised. Good to know grace and divinity is permeating into our culture even if subliminally.

Did you mean SALUTATIONS or SALUTIONS, to the earth. SALUTIONS is not a word that I am familiar with. SALUTATIONS is a greeting which makes more sense in this context. Correct translations makes a big difference in meaning. Spelling is important.
I thought the translation was more like this: "Almighty one, creator of the three dimensions, we behold your divine light. May it stimulate our intellect and bestow true knowledge upon us."

My take: oṃ bhūr bhuvaḥ = radiating, being, was = attributes of aka pointing to, the triple universe itself, svaḥ tát savitúr váreniyaṃ = all that worthiest SOURCE, bhárgo devásya dhīmahi = insight into its shining truth, dhíyo yó naḥ pracodáyāt = enhances us into Enlightenment; Summing to: "Oh, triple expanding Universe, that worthiest source (of Dharma), offering an insight into the shiniest truth, that drives us to ultimate Enlightenment!" basically a homage or hymn to the Universe itself, that advances us by teaching into higher understanding and being... However you are right that most shows do get canceled before they finish. And the makers of BSG were running low on their budget. They had to end it there, drive the show to its end. Before it meets the unfortunate fate of running into the sun like the fleet did, and being forever forgotten.

So glad I came upon this video. I always wondered what the theme song to Battlestar Galactica was and it's so much more beautiful in sentiment and deep meaning than I thought! Kind of appropriate to the story of them searching for earth, their ancestor's home, through their sci fi version of fictional "scriptural" clues (not a Christian Bible). BSG, even in the original 70s incarnation, was based on Mormon theology somewhat. Glen Larson was LDS. In Mormon belief, God (the Heavenly Father) comes from a place called Kolob. Larson switched the letters around to come up with Kobol. Also the references to 12 colonies is Zodiacal in nature. But also in Mormonism, there is a council of Twelve Apostles who work within the church. No, I'm not Mormon, thought I gave it an 11-month trial run a few years back.
I was watching a Star Trek TNG episode called "Best of Both Worlds". When a scene came up where this modern space battleship captain happens to visit with a bar keeper and they candidly speak about the end of the Roman Empire and the end of civilization as they know it, I compared this as a 7th grader to BSG's companion book for the original series pilot. Seemed fitting at the time (not knowing of course a producer of that episode would end up being part of a successful reboot).
How much I loved this series..... this sound is making me so nostalgic that I've tears in my eyes. "The" Greatest series ever made..(going back in my hard drive library to find the BSG complete season)

I've been watching this show(still the best tv show I've ever watched) rerun on comet. Anyway I could swear I hear them say "Laura Roslin" in the song and some other stuff I sometimes think I hear and other times I don't. I'm sure it's the chant everyone says it is, but go listen to it when the show starts, listen for them say the president of the 12 colonies name. Once you here it, you'll hear it every time after !
Vern I am a believer in attempting to adapt authentic classic or traditional beliefs into a modern or modern like setting. That secondary school which was portrayed in Caprica for example was I think almost hook line and sinker with Jesuit based community education rooted in traditional Catholic teaching.
I didn't watch the newer BSG, I was a bit skeptical about it, mainly because I was such a huge fan of the original. I finally got to watch the whole series on Netflix and just fell in love with the series. Oh. My. Gods. I regret not watching it when it first aired (although I do remember seeing one episode, half of it anyway, when Tyrol, Saul, Anders, and Torri some to realize they are Cylons). From the original, Galactica 1980, I remember them introducing the Cylon-human types. If I recall, I was thinking that it was a sort of continuation from Galactica 1980. I love this show. Its been 10 years since the show first aired, only five since it ended. I hope they don't make that movie, it would ruin it. You cannot tell a story like this in only 90 minutes.
I almost did the same thing. I just decided to give it a try, and was hooked! I liked the way they didn't go completely high tech, like the old comm phones for example. Made it feel sort of old and tired, but thrust back into action.

Everyone here has a very distinct purpose and theme; Baltar next to the Messenger Six fits as she is the divine(or carrying out the wishes of god) and he her prophet( he never stopped being a mess of a human being until he and Caprica Six saved Hera, and at the very end when he cried about ending up as a farmer and thought about his dad, I think) Roslin and Adama just gaze longingly at eachother( Adama as a judas works between those two as he was the deciding vote of Baltar's fate during his trial, Roslin felt betrayed.Vice versa works as well considering she is bearing a flame to her scriptures and Adama considers that a greater betrayal to herself given how her assumed role as prophet became so engrained to her identity) Saul stares at an empty chalice( we only see his eyepatch, he turned a blind eye to those like him and himself for what he did to Ellen, his wife. that chalice was meant for her) Lee is alone and deep in thought( he no longer wears a flight suit but a politicians garb, he has left behind his warrior nature and is now dedicated to leading what is left of human civilization to a better life) Tyrol staring at a knife( he is on edge and must come to terms with what he is and accept the changes that come with it. The Rebel Six is angered and accusing Helo and Athena( the truly guilty casualties of their war, they both betrayed their sides for eachother, their daughter the proof, neither side could ever look at the world in black and white ever again and the rebel six died for that world, were it not for them and their love this war would have no victors nor anyone left) And finally(I know, i'm sorry) Kara and Anders, they seem alone, as if all their attention us on one another and no one else exists( it's not because of regret from unfaithful choices or last minute decisions, they are on time that only god could give Kara and Anders at the end became a Hybrid, more than what he was but less than human. What time they had was precious.)
The Gayatri mantra is a beautiful chant and has depth of meaning, and I'm glad they used it as the opening music for BSG, but as an Indian, I was wincing at the Sanskrit pronunciation all through. Couldn't they have made a better effort at trying to get it right, at least? :(

It should take place during the original trilogy era and show us what the mandalorians are up to during that time while being oppressed by the empire. They should come back as a warrior race they once were and contribute to the rebellion even though they ironically use to terrorize the galaxy. That would be a kick ass TV show. Maybe have it take place after RotJ and they could connect it to Boba's survival and have him get the drive to go back to his people and lead them to fight the remnants of the empire. And of course give it an adult theme with swearing, sex, blood, people getting blown up, game of thrones style, they are mandalorians after all. Just fan fiction thoughts, lol. I also typed this at 2 in the morning.
It sounds pretty deep! I can probably appreciate it more when it's not being played on my phone. My goodness, seeing the Mandalorians go up against the Empire would be incredible. Although I'd like this show to have very little to do with the Fetts. I've never looked at Jango as a true Mandalorian, and I know damn well that's been strongly hinted on throughout the years that he isn't. I can't imagine them accepting his son Boba (who's simply a knock-off clone) as a helping hand. But then again if they can assist both Maul and Kenobi then anything is possible. A show like this with blood, sex, and alcohol, bring it on.

Saul Tigh Well you are right in that aspect. It is just season 4 was weird compared to the rest of the seasons. But thanks for understanding it from my point of view. However you are right that most shows do get canceled before they finish. And the makers of BSG were running low on their budget. They had to end it there, drive the show to its end. Before it meets the unfortunate fate of running into the sun like the fleet did, and being forever forgotten.

in a way invoking this mantra and the story of BSG right? the creating of the cylons, the destruction of humanity, the fleets destination to a new home, the cylons search for belonging and the need to replace their creators. an interesting choice for sure.
So its not that mantra itself is recited108 times a day but various mantras from the rigvada are recited, this being one the most powerful mantras for both its historical purpose and usage and the use of the sun diety proctor of beings and all spirits and gaurdian of departed souls on their way to this regions form a "heaven"
So glad I came upon this video. I always wondered what the theme song to Battlestar Galactica was and it's so much more beautiful in sentiment and deep meaning than I thought! Kind of appropriate to the story of them searching for earth, their ancestor's home, through their sci fi version of fictional "scriptural" clues (not a Christian Bible). The music evokes emotion and a feeling of prayer and worship. I'm not religious, but I am spiritual and find this chant beautiful. Thanks for posting this, even if I found it here years late!

BSG, even in the original 70s incarnation, was based on Mormon theology somewhat. Glen Larson was LDS. In Mormon belief, God (the Heavenly Father) comes from a place called Kolob. The first time a played this video, it gave me chills. You truly do get a powerful feeling listening to this Mantra!!!
I was watching a Star Trek TNG episode called "Best of Both Worlds". When a scene came up where this modern space battleship captain happens to visit with a bar keeper and they candidly speak about the end of the Roman Empire and the end of civilization as they know it, I compared this as a 7th grader to BSG's companion book for the original series pilot. Seemed fitting at the time (not knowing of course a producer of that episode would end up being part of a successful reboot).

Anyway I could swear I hear them say "Laura Roslin" in the song and some other stuff I sometimes think I hear and other times I don't. I'm sure it's the chant everyone says it is, but go listen to it when the show starts, listen for them say the president of the 12 colonies name. Once you here it, you'll hear it every time after !

I didn't watch the newer BSG, I was a bit skeptical about it, mainly because I was such a huge fan of the original. I finally got to watch the whole series on Netflix and just fell in love with the series. Oh. My. Gods. I regret not watching it when it first aired (although I do remember seeing one episode, half of it anyway, when Tyrol, Saul, Anders, and Torri some to realize they are Cylons). From the original, Galactica 1980, I remember them introducing the Cylon-human types. If I recall, I was thinking that it was a sort of continuation from Galactica 1980. I love this show. Its been 10 years since the show first aired, only five since it ended. I hope they don't make that movie, it would ruin it. You cannot tell a story like this in only 90 minutes.
I almost did the same thing. I just decided to give it a try, and was hooked! I liked the way they didn't go completely high tech, like the old comm phones for example. Made it feel sort of old and tired, but thrust back into action.

Mr. Glen Larson said he had liked this version of BSG ; some of the storylines , characters , & effects were better than what he had & could do in the original.

The Rebel Six is angered and accusing Helo and Athena( the truly guilty casualties of their war, they both betrayed their sides for eachother, their daughter the proof, neither side could ever look at the world in black and white ever again and the rebel six died for that world, were it not for them and their love this war would have no victors nor anyone left) And finally(I know, i'm sorry) Kara and Anders, they seem alone, as if all their attention us on one another and no one else exists( it's not because of regret from unfaithful choices or last minute decisions, they are on time that only god could give Kara and Anders at the end became a Hybrid, more than what he was but less than human. What time they had was precious.)

Damian Wayne™ imagine this as the intro music to a mandalorian TV show but in mando language. That's the type of show we need. It should take place during the original trilogy era and show us what the mandalorians are up to during that time while being oppressed by the empire. They should come back as a warrior race they once were and contribute to the rebellion even though they ironically use to terrorize the galaxy. That would be a kick ass TV show. Maybe have it take place after RotJ and they could connect it to Boba's survival and have him get the drive to go back to his people and lead them to fight the remnants of the empire. And of course give it an adult theme with swearing, sex, blood, people getting blown up, game of thrones style, they are mandalorians after all. Just fan fiction thoughts, lol. I also typed this at 2 in the morning.
It sounds pretty deep! I can probably appreciate it more when it's not being played on my phone. My goodness, seeing the Mandalorians go up against the Empire would be incredible. Although I'd like this show to have very little to do with the Fetts. I've never looked at Jango as a true Mandalorian, and I know damn well that's been strongly hinted on throughout the years that he isn't. I can't imagine them accepting his son Boba (who's simply a knock-off clone) as a helping hand. But then again if they can assist both Maul and Kenobi then anything is possible. A show like this with blood, sex, and alcohol, bring it on.
