0:44 Just imagine the convo from Cally’s POV:
“Over?! When did it start?!”
“I want a Marine Strike team in a Raptor in five minutes. Prepare to launch alert fighters”
She has no idea what’s going on exactly but it can’t be good... hence her priceless “Oh s**t” face
I think it's the opposite. She instantly realised what had happened and knew what Adama was going to do. She knew he wouldn't back down and was shocked at the prospect of an inevitable, terrible battle against fellow humans. That was a face of realisation - "we're going to fight Pegasus".
Cally: aye aye commander, but please let me discuss NXIVM with you when all of this is over.
Adama everytime the president keeps saying the wars over in the first season
@@PetersaberHD This.
Regardless of what is going through her mind, the decision to focus the camera on her reaction as the commander is talking was genius. It's also a way to resonate with the audience reaction.
Really shows how inexperienced Cain was with her fast tracked career. She would have been just fine during a typical war but not a post apocalyptic, billions dead, running for our lives war. Her willingness to cripple or even destroy an asset like Galactica proves it.
Other way round. It was Adama who was willing to cripple or destroy Galactica, along with probably crippling Pegasus. He started this fight by mutiny against his superior officer. He had the best reasons, but he started it nevertheless.
@@Cailus3542 and another way arround, she was willing to escalate and provoke him, for what? Executing two mens that have been detrimental assets in this war for survival?
And she's also willing to open fire with main batteries when there's a whole fleet of civilians right behind and arround the galactica, that goes to say a lot more.
@@thehatred94 cain didnt actualy care about civilians, considering that pegasus showed up alone even though pegasus itself had a civilian fleet at one point but consumed them to fix pegasus and she left the civilians for dead.
So it aint realy suprising she would be fine with civilian caualties, considering those ships would have ended up in the same fate as pegasus fleet eventualy anyways
I read it more as power-crazed or slightly insane... unable to cope with the reality that there is no more Proud Fleet... only a rag tag band of survivors. The rules must be adapted to the situation, not quotations from legal regulations penned by a now dead Empire. She would not or could not adapt to the new reality: Survival is priority one.
I agree
"Regulations give me broad authority in this matter."
"Launch the fighters!"
Lmao. I fucking love Adama.
Honestly bro, William James Osmos (Adam) is a fucking legend
@@themc.kennyshow6585 Yes, and for many this was the moment that defined that legend.
Something that always bothered me about that line of argument is that the entire civilian government is present on another ship. The Admiral is not on detached service.
What's her face: I'm a corporation citing legalities on a piece of paper.
Adama: I'm a gun, try it.
@@Fribnibby Lol, exactly! But because "WAR" we need "MOAR PWR"!!
And without a gun to back them up, the "government" can only write words on a page ... they NEED each other:
The government needs the military to enforce their edicts, because without that force their edicts wouldn't mean squat
AND
the military needs the government to maintain its "legitimacy".
When push comes to shove, though, "he who has the guns makes the rules".
So glad that, at least in America, The Founders recognized this, and made a provision that recognizes EVERYONE'S inalienable right of self-defense, so there wouldn't be a monopoly on violence -- would if we could return to their wisdom again.
One of the things that really set BSG apart is their exploration of such topics government/force -- truly excellent.
Can we all agree Bear McCreary is an amazing composer?
@@B3B3TTER I've been meaning to check it out. Tons of great things to watch atm.
So say we all!
Bear beats the frak out of John Williams.
@@PhoenixT70ok relax.
@@PhoenixT70 it's a great score and Bear is a great composer, but this is just objectively wrong.
I like how Tigh found out from Fisk.
XO's drinking together does make a bond, I guess.
XO’s handle most things. Things not necessary for the commander to deal with. Things not to do with leadership.
Fisk already had a feel for Cain and KNEW that if the Chief and Karl were executed, it would've led to something really bad. His telling Tigh was, i think, a desperate attempt for Adama to possibly reign in Cain, as no one on the Pegasus would.
Saul: The court martial is over
Adama: Over? When did it start?
Me: Priceless !
Me: Oh it just hit the fracking fan...
I imagine a laughtrack over that part every time
The mental gymnastics Cain went through to justify herself. Detached duty. The president is in formation with your ship. The legislature with her. There is nothing detached about this.
@@icecold9511 Cain is pretty clear in that she doesn’t recognize Roslin or the civilian government in the fleet as legitimate. She sneers at Roslin being the Secretary of Education when Roslin is presented as the president.
Not everyone is a lazy slob like Adama.
Admiral Cain is a flag officer during a time of war, but after finding the seat of Colonial civilian authority, after finding President Roslin, she was no longer on detached service.
A subtle way of showing she’s no respect for Roslin’s authority
Watching this clip today was the first time I ever put that together, glad to see this in the comments
Just goes to show how deep this show is. 7 complete rewatches and rewatched this episode who knows how many times, and I can still come away with a new nugget of depth
I'm inclined to think that Cain has been haunted by the fear of a situation where she might be called to account for the atrocities she's committed prior to encountering the Galactica fleet, and she's rehearsed this justification to herself so many times that when the dreaded moment finally arrives and her panic level is dialed to max, she reflexively parrots her comforting phrase like a little kid reaching for her safety blanket, without even stopping to think that the actual legal reasoning technically no longer applies.
@@paqx3534 when I first saw the pegasus and Galactica reunite, I thought the atmosphere was odd, especially when Admiral Caine welcomed the galactica back to the fleet even though the pegasus was a lone ship while the galactica had an entire civillian fleet and a civil head of state, of course it becomes evident that Caine was a tyrant who assumed control and sought to maintain it despite protocol dictating otherwise
@@willg-r3269 'He's left me with no choice' she practically whispers this because she knows its clear to everyone on control deck that there are a multitude of options, but none that Caine will willingly take, the way that everyone on deck looks when she orders to launch the alert fighters really gets across the knifes edge the Admiral is walking, she's only managed to prevent a mutiny at this point through fear, extrajudicial execution of the XO, swift killing of dissidents, when her XO argues with her in this scene despite all this it shows just how tense the chain of command is on the pegasus, this situation could have just have easily boiled over to mutiny, practically a dice roll
Some of the best acting in the entire series, combined with my favorite track on the OST. Cally's face at 0:42 is a fantastic example of saying everything without a single word of dialogue.
One of the all-time greatest scenes in science fiction.
This scene hit on all thrusters! With 3 different sets this was likely an entire day of filming given set up time and rehearsals.
Back then Cally was a likeable character, and not that crazy b**** she developed into :(
Maybe my favorite scene in the whole show
So say we all!
Mine too!
This one and Galactica falling in atmosphere
It was good. This and meeting the Pegasus for the first time.
Yes. Pretty massive power play. I was sad for Adama when Rosilyn passed away in the end. It was bittersweet.
One of the best cliffhangers on the show. Plus, Forbes really gave it her all for this role, easily one of the best casting decisions.
Which always reminds me of the story of her coming on set and being referred to as a Trek actor when in fact she had had tough luck finding work for so many roles because of being typecast because of her TNG episodes when she was much newer to TV.
Between her and Nana Visitor's performance in a single season-4 episode...
The only thing that could have made BSG better, would have been more screen time for former Bajoran actors.
@@Keithustus Can you imagine if she actually took the role that she was intended to take in Deep Space Nine? Would be a shame to miss out on Nana Visitor, but seeing Forbes in her place would have been _fascinating_ .
Interesting that I first noticed Michelle Forbes in BSG even before Star Trek TNG where she guest starred as a Bajoran in a few episodes. Loved her acting as Admiral Cain and she made that character an antagonist that you'd love to hate. Brilliant!!
One of the best moments in the show, I remember feeling the tension when I first watched it.
I don't remember any other cliffhanger in television they had me on the edge of my seat quite like this one. Because no matter who wins, humanity loses.
All I knew for sure was that Helo and Chief Tyrol would not be killed. This particular set of action's was really the first real step toward the bonding of Human and Cylon. I was so glad they stopped Sharon Valeri from being raped and harmed worse. Then of course Callie shoots Sharon to death but it was still a first step.
@@charlesmcgehee3227 Well she shot the other Sharon and that was before this.
@@williamcostigan91 Lot's of Sharon's die as well as the other "model's. The whole "downloading to another body" concept. An the notion that A.I. developed that tech is a great component of the story.
I remember audibly yelling "No!" when it cut to black
0:40 I love how the camera turned over to Cally when Adana started giving his marching orders. Her reaction to how things were clearly escalating was palpable.
Never before did I notice the Battlestars making subtle manoeuvres in the last shot, Pegasus bringing its bow on Galactica and Galactica herself reorienting to line up the dorsal gun batteries. I get way to excited over little details like that.
The only problem with it is that the establishing shot shows Pegasus far closer to the Fleet than that final shot. It irks me, but it’s otherwise perfect.
@@WildCharger maybe its a choice to show Galactica as the protector of the fleet and in this scene Pegasus as the agressor and threat to it?
@@Knuspermonster
Regardless of the reason it happened, the fact is that the Pegasus didn’t just magically teleport away from the fleet like that while Adama and Cain had their falling out. It’s a logic inconsistency.
@@WildCharger It’s clear Adama would hunt them down. Another thing, if Cain backs down now, it shows she’s afraid and unsure. I doubt everyone on Pegasus was happy with her rule. Now shown she isn’t the one with power, a subordinate could frag her, and then take command of Pegasus to surrender it to Adama. She needs to engage Galactica if it comes to fighting, otherwise she’s a coward who’s afraid of an old man and a half effective Battlestar.
Re-watched BG a few weeks ago. It's shocking how good this show was. You would go into it thinking it was just another sci-fi show and proceed to get blown away by the acting alone.

When BSG was good, it was fucking amazing.
Unfortunately the writers didn't have a clear vision for the story. That and the main characters acting like hormonal teenagers in a soap-opera really brought the show down. Babylon 5 and The Expanse still win out overall in my book.
On Screen Perfection. Possibly the best moment of the whole series. Amazing Production, Design, Direction, and Effects. While, the Writing, Acting, Music, and Editing performances were Phenomenal, my hat goes off to the Outstanding Work of the Camera Crew who really sold it!
That camera shift to Cally when Adama orders the marine strike team is fantastic
Yeah, the show never gets better than with this arc. Season 2, ep 9-12, is the peak of the show. It never makes it back to this point.
"Commander, why are you launching fighters?"
Admiral, did you not just hear the man? He said he was getting his men back, quoted regulations be damned.
Everything about this scene and score was in perfect harmony. One of the most intense scenes on screen. Still gives me goosebumps.
We had such phenomenal stuff back in the day. What a shame this entire decade has been.
this might be my favourite episode of the series. Front to back, amazing.
No matter how many times I watch this, all I think is "holy kino!"
"You told me they would get a fair trial, what kind of a trial could they have possibly had?!?"
I fucking love Adama.
One of the most intense scenes. Great acting, cinematography music editing all come together.
The way Galactica positions itself for full broadside and flak barrier like in the mini series at Ragnar station. I love it
I love that moment at 0:36 when Adama has to break rank. Such amazing acting/writing.
Seriously one of the best moments in television history
This is one of my favorite scenes of the entire series. I remember trying to find it on UA-cam years ago and not having any luck, so I’m super glad it’s on here now!
This ensign Ro' has always been quite self-righteous.
This is probably my favourite scene from this entire series. Especially the epic music that accompanies it.
The music that appears briefly here (0:50) and yet nowhere else in the series (to my knowlege) is truly brilliant and memorable.
Prelude to War is an awesome piece
“Call it what you like. I’m getting my men.”
There was a hint of Lt. Castillo in Adama’s voice!
Even after all these years BG, you are still uploading! May Lords of Kobol watch over your noble work! So say we all!!!

Imagine being part of the civilian fleet only to see Galatica and Pegasus headed to a full scale fight with each other
👀
😳.....
Front row seats to the end of the world baby!
I get goosebumps every time I watch this scene. Drums and tension - this is what makes every scene incredible.
I'd be hard pressed to find a fictional character who I'd rather have my back in a life or death situation than Adama. He's dedicated to his people to the end.
The respect and care he shows for his crew and fleet is the reason why he is totally respected by his crew and those who know of his action. Caine commands obedience but no respect, I think if this standoff actually turned hot, the pegasus command would have mutinied because Adama commanded true respect and was a strong leadership alternative. I don't think the XO would have started the mutiny, probably someone else, but the entire command deck would quickly follow and the XO would assume command. Thats the power of good leaders over tyrants, even if scared into submission by a tyrant, if an alternative leader who acts in the best interest of people rises, it becomes a matter of time for when the tyrant is overthrown.
I'd like to think he asked for a Marine Strike Team AND a velociraptor
One of the best scenes of the whole show
God thebmusic on this series was absolute perfect. The tension this builds up is incredible.
That phone call is now considered as the chorus lyrics to Prelude to War
this cliffhanger was the high point of the entire series if you ask me
Gods, that determination on Adama's face.
*random Colonial Civilian looking out the window:* 👁👄👁
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 EXACTLY!
in the final scene, pegasus lunches vipers like missles towards galactica that is in front of the fleet , nice image reprezenting that adama would defend and protect every single soul on those ships
You'll never find a more honourable Commander/Admiral than this, he fights for every man unde his command, rank means nothing when you are innocent :)
Olmos' acting, Bear McCreary's score, Tigh (Michael Hogan) anticipating Adama's decision and Carry (Nicki Clyne) knowing right at this moment exactly what's going on, no questions asked.. this pivotal moment, this scene is perfectly staged.. acting, music, camerawork... just goosebumps.
This scene hits hard, even harder back then when it helped me through a rough time and I'd to wait a tad over 3 months for the next episode.
With all of it's problems and discomforts, my time in service was defined by a company CO whom I trusted to have my back as much as Adama does his men here. I'm decades out, but if that man called me again I'd do whatever I could for him. He earned a lifetime of loyalty from me, and others I'm sure.
Meanwhile on Star Trek Enterprise: Hoshi forgets her tricorder on some boring planet
and is Beauty to the Beast on another. Not a bad episode, just…odd.
lol!!! haven't seen enterprise yet.
I really didn't saw such realistic and epic sci fi in my entire life, and I'm a nerd, I saw a lot. Star Wars can use soo many special effects etc, but it will never be such realisic and epic as Battlestar Galactica. Also I didn't saw such epic acting. BSG forever!
Capt. Alucard “Whoops, did I accidentally a civil war?!”
Everything about this scene is perfect. The build up of the music, the spinning camera switching between Adam and Cain. Cally's sudden realisation that something was about to throw down. Then finally the way nobody on Galactica questions Adam and just instantly gets straight into action!
that admiral is Ro´Laren from Star Trek TNG.. interesting.

@@falcore91 yeah. I don't think we would have had the Odo Kira Romance with Ro Laren
Adama is me trying to retrieve my friends from the principals office
I don't think Cain was in possession of all her faculties anymore. I think she suffered a psychotic break after the attack. You never know how you will react until you have actually been in combat. Adama had. Cain was brilliant in many ways but I think she cracked.
I agree, but I think she cracked long ago when she was a kid in that scene on Razor when she leaves her little sister. I think that broke her and she never recovered. She was always "that person" after that, it just took a war for it to be exposed. Adama could have made a similar choice that she made (he could have stripped the fleet and left them in Ragnar Anchorage space station).

Ensign Ro has come a long way.
Michelle Forbes is a GODDESS...❤️❤️❤️❤️
The funny thing about this if it had turned into a shooting gallery between both ships, even though Pegasus is newer, larger and more advanced, Cain would still be going against a battle hardened commander that had fought in two cylon wars and commanded an old school battlestar that was designed to take a hit and dish one out as needed. Would Galactica have been matched easily against Pegasus? Absolutely, but with Adama commanding,y money would be on Galactica being the victor...

I gotta admit the following episode was kind of a letdown, though.
Ironically galactica is the more powerful ship in a broadside engagement. A mercury class Battlestar was designed to be devastating in a frontal assault but her weakness is broadsides. But galactica was designed to be an all rounder.

Without he's input in this show it would be half of what it is truly!
Prelude to War is a fantastic piece of music. Really love the eerie bit near the end of it.
Admiral Cain : " Adama, is that you? wait... why do I hear boss music?"
The music in this absolutely makes this scene. That, coupled with the camerawork.
One of my all-time favorite TV scores is Prelude to War from this scene. Truly heart-pounding.
"I want a Marine Strike Team in a Raptor in 5 Minutes"
No questions asked, no hesitation, just a brief moment as he comprehends the gravity of the situation and commits to it. This is why Adama is a hero to the fleet and a terror to the Cylons.

This scene just has me thinking, what does this look like from the point of view of the civilian fleet? I mean just imagine the two guardians of everything you know suddenly turn and begin posturing to kill one another, a fight which would at best result in one destroyed and one heavily damaged or at worst both completely slagged. That pained look on the Commander’s face, before he gave the order to prepare for an assault, was phenomenal acting, on Olmos’ part!
Absolutely gut wrenching. I swear I feel the agony of that terrible moment each time I see it
James Edward Olmos first captured my attention on the great film American Me. Danny Trejo was just getting started. Ever since, Neither actor has disappointed me one bit.
Olmos never fails to Stand and Deliver.
The pained expression reveals a realization that the relief and help of the Pegasus is lost and they are now enemies. Something he was hoping to avoid.
Olmos always looked pained!
Cain ruled with an iron fist and her rule was absolute, you can just see everyone on the CIC look at her like shes lost it, but are too afraid to do anything. Adama likewise commanded through respect, no on questioned his orders to get his men back because they believe in him. Its nailing the small details that really elevates a show above the rest.
I think she was popular on pegasus overall. They were scared because they were about to fight their own. But, the fight was over two galactica men killing a pegasus man to defend the honor of a machine, an object, in their eyes.
Adama commanded through the "respect" of spacing people who opposed his rule. He's not much better than Cain.
Idk if it was so much fear of Cain as much as fear of the uncertain. She was popular for leading the Pegasus thru hard times and making difficult decisions and I believe she did command the respect of her crew who have been on their own without any civilian flotilla so basically living under a military junta. I think they were uncertain about what was going to occur. Was Cain going to hand over the men? Was she going to call action stations? Was she just gonna execute them without mercy? Was a civil war essentially going to break out between elements of the military
I always loved her acting. Ever since her days on Star Trek TNG.

I love the simple evolution in this one scene of how Cain views Adama. She starts out simply treating him like a misbehaving dog. Cute, but ultimately subservient. How her tone changes when she realises he's committed to disobeying, that he and the Galactica stand their ground when pushed too far, unlike her own crew. She's pissed, but also unnerved and a little frightened. If fighting started, regardless of their chances of victory, Galactica is still a significant threat to her ship and crew.

@@B3B3TTER a few BSG fans were furious back then when they gender swapped Starbuck and Boomer and I admit I was very hesitant at first after growing up with reruns of the old Galactica and couldn't quite understand why they would even do a remake and why they would make Starbuck a woman.. et cetera - but the writing, the dynamics between the characters.. all of it worked out and I was so in love with the new BSG (not necessarily with all the characters but they grew on me) from the very first episode/pilot that by the time we got to the Pegasus I've basically forgotten all about the old BSG (which had a few serious episodes but was a product of its time, really) and this scene right there, the power play between Admiral Cain and Commander Adama, the different motivations of the characters with the stakes being high, the camera work, Bear McCreary's soundtrack perfectly setting the tone, the acting of everyone in this scene but especially Olmos and Forbes is phenomenal.. this few minutes give me the chills everytime I watch it and you can empathize with the characters. It's perfection. One could argue that the overall premise of the series is too religious or it's a cop out somehow but I'm an atheist and for me it's one of the best Sci-Fi shows out there.. up there with Babylon 5 and Farscape (and Person Of Interest if we count this as Sci-Fi).
@@unclereaper The reason why BSG worked and so many shows that just decide to take your favorite stories and remake them with female characters in most/all key roles is that they gave some thought to making these characters real people and not just another "as-a-woman" who needs to beat you over the head with her womanhood despite it not making any sense whatsoever in universe.
Apollo, Starbuck, and Boomer are not the same characters as Lee, Kara, and Sharon, even if those 2003 series characters have callsigns of the 1978 character names.
Which isn't to say you can't do the "as-a-woman" character badly. Marvel's Agent Carter did the badassery as a woman _because_ her superiors presumed that a woman couldn't even dream of doing the things she did. And she used it to her advantage.
But nobody doubts that Kara or Kat can be an excellent fighter pilot. They have nothing to prove to anyone. Unless it be the proving to themselves which of them is the better pilot (or coming to terms with the fact that they're both damned good pilots.) And since they aren't constantly telling us they have nothing to prove and then trying to prove women can do the job, they can spend more time doing it well.
When Hollywood in general pulls their heads out of their asses and figure that out … maybe we'll get more Sigourney Weavers and fewer Brie Larsons. Or not and most of their as-a-woman characters will be STUPID and their stories unwatchable. Their choice.
Michelle Forbes has definitely come a long way from Ensign Ro, and she was pretty good then...
"Target the main battery for galactica, AND MAY THE GODS HAVE MERCY ON THEIR SOULS". Terrifying delivery of that line, shook me to my core as it was essentially a tyrant, in command of the most powerful ship that they had come across to date. Michelle Forbes nailed it.
@@knghtbrd it just shows that if the characters are written well nobody really cares about their gender as long as they're interesting, complex and have a good story arc. Their main character trait ist their gender. Starbuck had more balls than most main male characters but she had so many flawas it was coming out of her ears and she was constantly struggled with them. Brilliant writing and acting.
I liked that Adama just covered the mouthpiece with his hand in order to give an order without Cain hearing it. A phone is much more practical than a viewscreen.
If looks could kill... the Pegasus just exploded in a massive fireball with all hands.
I hated seeing Pegasus wrecked during the Exodus from New Caprica. It was an example of the artists that designed the Vipers, the Cylon Base ships and all of the other vessel's.
@@charlesmcgehee3227 I hated that too. Unfortunately, with it being a remagine series, it did have to stick with some of the original plot... And the rather abrupt loss of the Pegasus is one of them.
At least we got to see it for decent amount of time.
i love how Tigh doesn't ask adama "what are your orders?" he knows Adama so well that he knows that he just needs that bare moment before making a decision
With anyone, it's the best way to act while waiting for instructions after having layed out all your information. You don't want to disturb and pollute the decision making that is currently going on in Adama's head in this critical moment.
And tbh, as far as I'm concerned, it's the same thing with everybody, people have to make decisions, when a person with the responsibility of making it has been given all information and council, the moment demands silence and waiting.
@@ooKaari very solid line of thought mate
It's really hard watching scenes like this, to see how far everything else has fallen. The writing, acting, directing, music, all of it was just perfect. Such great attention to detail, characters act rationally in their own mindset, etc.
Just this one scene has so many small subtle moments that just perfectly set it all up.
@@stevenschiro1838 couldn't agree more. That's why BSG is my favourite show ever. Really good writing ( both in character and story ), fun dialogues, stellar acting even from the supporting cast, great music and CGI. The whole package. It's how its done. Vare rare these days.

What you said true. But also you must know commander’s intent and having everything lined up and ready when he says go. Anticipating orders is everything. Thinking in your commanders shoes and knowing him.
