This model is special to me. I bugged my parents for a year to buy me a Schwinn Apple Crate.. I finally got it.. about year and a half later I started driving and it ended up sitting in my basement. My dad came home one day and asked me if I would sell it to one of his coworkers for his son. I’m sixty five now but I still wish I had that bike..sitting in my basement.

I have built this kit, and what a joy! The trip down memory lane was incredible. I have always wanted a Schwann Apple Crate, and FINALLY I am the Proud owner, and I built it Myself! I am working on the Continental now. I hope they do make more in this series. Thanks and great Job!

Brings back many memories from back in the day. Anyone had one of these you knew their dad made good money back then. There was a Schwinn bike shop a few block from where we grew up and they also sold model railroad stuff. Used to ride the Schwinn bike to go buy model railroad supplies.

I still have my peeler. On this bike all the "decals"were done in black and the seat was smooth and it came from Schwinn with the black S stripe on it. I built this kit when I was a kid. Glad to see it back

I remember looking at the brochure with such longing. My Dad was a generous man, but no way was he going to fork over $85 - $95 for a kid's bike (around $600 in today's money). I did eventually get a yellow sting ray that did not have gears or hand brakes, just a regular bike with coaster brakes. But I was absolutely thrilled to get it and rode it to death everywhere before I finally outgrew it. Fond memories and just got the model kit! My bike was yellow, but I'll probably build the Orange Krate, as that was the one I coveted the most.

You and your group of friends had total freedom because everybody had a bike. Since you were always in groups, parents knew everyone looked out for each other. It wasn’t brand new. but what today ppl call, “Gently Used” blue and white if I remember correctly.... had fun with it. shifting the gears pretending it had an engine... it ran its course, had fun with it Never thinking it might be worth $$ in the future. I think that’s the best way to appreciate why you have. Enjoy it and look back on the fun you had with your friends and their bikes...

The place had everything for kids 5 to 95 ☺ .........and a huge section dedicated to scale models, from battleships to glow-in'-the dark movie monsters ! My favorite ( all of them 😆 ) but the car part of the store was loaded with beautiful rides from all years my favorite by far the dragracing models...One that I built at least 5 times... Chris, thanks so much for ANOTHER terrific review! I absolutely LOVED this bike when I was a kid, and I have a kinda funny story to tell you about it. Back around 1968-69 my Dad bought me an Apple Krate Schwinn that looked a lot like the model you built.
One day my Mom wanted me to go over to my Uncle's (her brother's house) for the day as she was going somewhere, and didn't want me in the house alone all day. My Uncle who only lived about 5 blocks away, I rode over to his house on the bike. I remember leaving the bike on his porch and when we came back out about an hour later, it was GONE!
Of course I was very upset as an eight year old kid, because I think it was the first time I ever had anything stolen (yes thieves were thriving in the '60's).
My Uncle and I got into his car (a '67 Toronado) and we were driving around seeing if a kid was riding my bike. About a block away from the house, all of sudden four kids come riding out of the alley way right in front of us, and one of them was riding my stolen bike. I shouted "THERE IT IS!" and my Uncle very quickly threw the car in park and sprinted after the kids! He was a VERY fast runner in those days as he was a state champion sprinter in the early '60's when he was in high school.
He caught up with the kid, made me get out of the car, and I never found out where he took the kid and what happened to him. At least I got my bike back and from then on I would NEVER leave the bike outside again after that!
I got to get one of these kits and build it like the one I had 50 years ago. Real ones cost a FORTUNE now and it's amazing the things we took for granted as kids can be worth so much now (old Hot Wheels are another example).
Thanks again for the video, and keep up the great work!

Do a wheelie!! Haha. Looks rad mate.
Bit before my time the old Stingray but can still appreciate them. I caught the the mid school BMX era of the late 80’s and 90’s when mum got me a sweet Redline, and I started racing. I’ve still got got bikes and try to ride when my back isn’t killin me 🍻

Cool. I had a Fedco knockoff version, turned it into a chopper with extended forks/sissy bar, then into a real early bmx bike in the early '70's. keep on building.

To all of the viewers of HPI Guys WorkShop;one of Chris' kits, was featured in this month's issue of Fine Scale Modeler;in the reader gallery section, beginning on page 44!.The kit featured in the magazine,is the Italari re-boxing of Esci's 1/9 scale Kettenkrad;which he completed in 4 days.Painted with Rust-Oleum black primer, under Krylon Wild Oats matte, straight from the can.The weathering was done using craft paints, and washes, dry brushed with craft metallics on the tracks, and dusted with various tile grout colors.Mounds of tile grout formed the mud on the bottom, front tire, tracks, sides, and where ever the soliders will be stepping on and off of the vehicle.

I just finished a Bone Daddy chopper that I painted in yellow. I've been wondering to myself how I came up with a yellow, chrome, black color scheme and it just hit me, I had watched this video not long ago! Seeing that yellow bike again convinces me that I was influenced by this build

Cool build I had a Schwinn stingray early 60s but was a Frankienstein bike, built it by getting parts from second hand and junk stores Could still call it a Schwinn all parts where Schwinn just hard to classify which model so just called it a stingray since the frame was that, best thing was only a fraction of the cost they sold for.

I bought a Lemon Peeler from a guy up the street when he outgrew it..my sister bought me a drag chute for it and I put it where the tool bag was..got a Schwinn speedometer from the bike store and proceeded to put 1,000 miles on it during the Summer of 1969..sadly, it got stolen later that year.
I built this kit and it was a challenge, now its a challenge for those to find one to purchase.

Knock the chrome back on the spokes by giving them a dark wash to get a better result, and source thinner cables !

Yet another stunning build Chris. I'd love to get this in the UK but after seeing the shipping at Model Round Up is $42.35 on a kit that costs $28.90 I might have to pass! Anyone in Europe have the orange one of these, then give me a shout lol
