What aspect of color grading would you like to know more about? I’m looking for ideas for a future video on color grading, so please leave your suggestions in the comments below 😊👇🏼
I don’t have anything like that yet, but that’s a good idea for a future video. A quick way to create a moody look would be to do basic corrections (like exposure, white balance, etc) across all your clips and then apply a moody LUT to an adjustment layer that you can add across your entire edit. If you don’t want to use a LUT, you can still use an adjustment layer to create your own moody look using FCPX’s built in color plugins.
Thank you, my friend. Easy to understand and quickly applicable. I was at an ad agency for 3 decades (I was Head of Production at McCann-Erickson) and it is always refreshing to find someone who can explain something succinctly. I'm an old guy now, but still learning new stuff every day. Thanks!
Thanks for watching Scott! I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I used to do work for McCann SA back in the day. Glad to hear you’re still learning new things 😄🙌🏼
Oh wow 🤗, thank-you for this 🙏. What I especially love is that you took the time to show *every* step. So many FCPX tutorials just go way too fast, make too many assumptions, and leave out just enough of the crucial bits that it’s just too frustrating. This was 👌👌👌
Thanks so much for watching. Appreciate the feedback! I'm trying to find the balance between giving all the steps so that beginners can follow, but not making it too basic for some of the more experienced users. I'm glad you found it helpful 😊
@@Brad_West I think you nailed it 🤗👌. I’ve been using FCPX for 5 years, but I know I barely scratch the surface. If you cover something, even if you do it quickly I can still rewind/pause... so much better than if it’s just not there. (I know it’s not easy to get technical tutorials “right”, so again, thank-you 🙏)
wow, this was excellent! ive been looking for a video on how to do this for awhile & this is the best one! very informative & clear. thank you so much, i really appreciate your help!
Aahhh. This is what I was looking for, time to play around in FCPX, totally loving your tutorials, most of the time, I’ll be freaking out by accidentally opening/clicking on this panel. Hahahaha. Totally a newbie 😂 I wasn’t able to say that I’m definitely loving the South African accent. 😍😍😍 Thanks again Brad 🙌🏼🎉👏🏼👑
Thank you for this quick and very easy to understand video. Actually I am on the search of finding a way to do this: change the colours of the dresses of a group of dancers for my next song video! The idea is this: have all of them wear the same coloured dresses for the group dance. In post edit, I want to change the colours of their dresses [all of the dancers to a different coloured dress]. The central reason for this proposal is cost cutting: to avoid the expenses of having them to dance in two or three costumes of different colours. Can this be done?
Yes you should be able to change the colors of the dresses. If you’re changing the dresses to different colors in the same shot you will probably need to do some masking to make it work. I would also recommend shooting a test clip with the dresses to make sure you can change the colors you want to change to. Hope that helps 😊
I’m so glad to hear that! Thanks for watching! 😊🙏🏼 Great suggestion! I have more courses in the works. Just need to find the time. But the fact that you’re interested in an advanced FCPX course makes me want to get on it soon!
Hey Brad and Donna, thanks so much for making this video. I was able to follow along and I managed to change one of the preset bumper/title in FCPX for my project. I would like to learn how to color grad to enhance skin tones or even skin texture, thanks much! 🙆
If you're struggling to change to an exact color, get as close as you can with one hue curves adjustment and then add a second one and repeat. That should help you get to red.
Whenever I do it there is no vertical line. And it’s not far off to the right or left or anything. The only times where it shows up are if I use the eyedropper on a solid color square.
@@Brad_West I am running 10.4.8. I don’t think my computer can download a newer version as any newer version also requires a computer software update, in which computer is not supported for.
If it’s at all possible, I would recommend reinstalling FCP (or at least trashing the preferences) to see if that helps solve the problem. Let me know if it works 😊🤞🏼
One point I’m confused about. When you duplicated the layer was that duplicating the clip or just the adjustment layer? I was expecting to see a blend mode change on the top layer. Also, your shortcut tips like +2 are really, really appreciated. I think your tutorials are the best out there. Thank you!
When I duplicated the clip, it duplicated the clip with the HSL effect on it since I had already added the effect. That’s why I removed it on the bottom clip. Appreciate you watching the tutorials 😊🙏🏼
@@Brad_West But I can’t see the bottom clip unless I change the top clip’s blend mode from normal to Overlay or something. This is what confuses me. Thanks.
Thanks Rachid, appreciate that! Funny you should say that, I just put out a step-by-step color grading video yesterday if you'll like to check that out 😀
One idea would be to enhance a sunset shot on the farm. If you have a yellow-ish sunset that is a little dull, you could change the yellow to a more orange-y color to make the sunset look a bit more dramatic. 😊
I wish they just gave us sliders like they are in the Photos app. That's a lot faster and easier. I shoot on Sony and depending on which colour profile I use, the red and yellow tones have to be slightly corrected in terms of depth and hue.
That’s a tough one 🤔 You could try using a curves adjustment and then raise the shadows on the blue curve and then maybe desaturate the blue areas using a color mask? That might work.
You could use an adjustment layer if you wanted to apply this effect to a bunch of different clips, but I generally just do this directly on the clip itself 😊
Hey Brad, thanks for this great tut! It's my first day using FCPX. 1) How did you get different colours on the separate clips, because when I change the hue/saturations curves colour on one clip, that colour gets applied to all other clips that are stacked. 2) Also since I'm trying to mask a moving object, the mask that I applied to clip 2 in the stack and masks separately applied to clip 3 and 4 are overlapping and doing a weird distortion.
Hey Aadi. Welcome to FCPX 😊 Sounds like you'll need to use a colour range mask and possible a shape mask together to isolate the colours better. It's weird that the hue/saturation colour curves correction is adjusting all the clips and not just the clip it is applied to. Do you have a blend mode applied, or opacity other than 100%? If you are creating multiple masks, you might need to go keyframe by keyframe to adjust them so that they don't overlap. I would suggest isolating each clip individually so that you can keyframe the mask and then add each layer one at a time and tweak your keyframes as you go. That might help you to find the issue and get rid of the distortion. Hope that helps 😊
Great vid, thanks. I'm a bit surprised there doesn't seem to be a default colour correction for violet. In humans our eye's red cones are activated for that colour, so we see it more as purple.. than the deep blue cameras tend to pick up. I would have thought there was a stock map to colour correct that to be more like the human eye. I guess I'll eyeball it (arf)
Yeah the best way to do it is probably using the HSL curves adjustment. Even though it doesn't work the same as the human eye, you should be able to get decent results with the HSL curves.
Absolutely! I guess I should have clarified that if you need to adjust the timing of the transition or anything like that, I find it easier to quickly drag that transition as opposed to opening up the keyframe editor and making changes that way. Also, if you transition in and out of that effect and you decide to adjust the saturation later, you have to change the saturation at two keyframes as opposed to just making the change once on the top clip 😄👍🏼
What aspect of color grading would you like to know more about? I’m looking for ideas for a future video on color grading, so please leave your suggestions in the comments below 😊👇🏼
Do you have any videos on color grading for creating shadows? Or anything on how to create moody horror looks in color grading?
I don’t have anything like that yet, but that’s a good idea for a future video.
A quick way to create a moody look would be to do basic corrections (like exposure, white balance, etc) across all your clips and then apply a moody LUT to an adjustment layer that you can add across your entire edit.

Hey Aadi. Welcome to FCPX 😊
Sounds like you'll need to use a colour range mask and possible a shape mask together to isolate the colours better. It's weird that the hue/saturation colour curves correction is adjusting all the clips and not just the clip it is applied to. Do you have a blend mode applied, or opacity other than 100%?
