One thing I've noticed as a Ryobi fan boy is the blades are total junk, its always helped my saws a ton when I've upgraded them to a better blade, if you feel like it, it think it would be super awesome to see a comparison between the track saws with the same type of blade on them. Thank you for all you do!
all stock blades on tools from manufacturers are trash brother.. they're fine just to get you going, once you pass that point, id always recommend swapping out to Diablo or Irwin, Full Boar etc..
Agreed, i have some newer stuff, I also have a 10 year old, circular saw, that has a brushed motor, and that in particular, still surprisingly cuts good.
I honestly rarely use it. I do pull it out of hibernation occasionally. It never fails to cut, well. It will splinter the end of a deep cut though, now. It didn't always.
I use it so rarely i never cared to upgrade the blade just yet.
It is surprisingly a great saw, still.
Esp with a newer battery attached to it.

I'm heavily invested in the Ryobi battery platform and jumped on this when it was first released. You really nailed the shortcomings of this saw.. I'm still working with Ryobi on getting what I need out of this, but I'm hoping they take the constructive criticism and make the saw better in V2. Tell the truth and make the vendor accountable for their designs. They will step up or lose market share as a result.
One technique that can help with the lower power saws, and even the top of the line in certain situations is to cut with multiple passes instead of trying to cut 2" of hardwood in one pass. Use your depth stop and take it in 2-3 passes and that will often get you a better finish, more accurate angle and longer battery life. Good review. I'm not a Ryobi hater, but their typical demographic doesn't usually line up with my applications and this seems to follow their normal gameplan.
Great Review. I am committed to to the Ryobi platform, but Ihave the Kreg Track Saw and Adaptive Cutting System. (Every accessory! Ouch!) I used my Kreg a lot and it has been good. The one drawback is it is a corded tool. I use mine in the garage, so that is not a problem. Also, I am old enough to remember when all power tools were corded. Millions of houses were built in the day plugged into an outlet or generator. Also, remember this, if you want total perfection, you make a first cut with the track saw, then run the smaller pieces through a table saw. That is what I do. Five Thumbs Up Matt.

Enjoyed the review. Keeping my OLD 6.5" Ryobi circular saw with the custom plate I made so it fits a Festool track. Sometimes you need a battery for breaking down sheet goods in the big box store's parking lot. In my area, all the panel saws in the big box stores seem to be broken.
Long straight edge, 2 clamps and a Ryobi battery saw is the answer as you rightly point out.

Man, I appreciate your honest and in depth review! I’ve been going back and forth if I should buy this saw because I’m already invested in the Ryobi line of tools, and I’ve heard mixed reviews until now. I’m definitely getting one, because I just need something to quickly breakdown plywood when I don’t feel like using my table saw. Thanks, man!👊🏾
Im in the same position as you and bought one. The tracks are easier to line up than you think and the base can be adjusted to the blade with a few screws to achieve 90 cuts on plywood and 2x12’s. It’s a bit tedious to adj and lock it in but it’s worth it. 👍

Same here. I've been in the Ryobi platform for what seems like forever (long before the tools turned green) and they have worked very well for what I do. I'm not really in the market for a track saw, but if I was, I would probably go with the Kreg too. They really lost me with the 27.5" tracks. IF they happen to come out with a full size track, I might change my mind.
I am invested in the Ryobi platform and appreciate the good honest reviews. I understand that their products are not contractor grade, but their basic tools work fine for the price. I would stay away from Ryobi if you need a lot of power and precision.
Fair review. I think too many people are unfairly negative about a brand thats clearly designed for the average person, not serious woodworkers. To me its like telling the average person they need to buy a Mercedes instead of a Toyota, it shows a lack of perspective. I'm a Ryobi person but I use corded DeWalts for all my cutting tools. Couldn't be happier with both systems.

I’ve always pronounced it the way you do. LOL. I already have a Festool Track saw. And I love everything about it. I love the accuracy and the MOST OF ALL the dust collection. I watched this to see what they came up with. As a beginner woodworker 10 years ago… I would have loved to have had this saw. So I’m glad to see they have an option. I have moved away from all of my Ryobi tools except my nail gun. Of course… it’s starting to give me issues and will end up replacing it with Dewalt. Not a Ryobi hater…. They got me through my beginner woodworking years just fine. But when you try something that’s better… and you can afford it… why not switch. Thanks for the review.

This flexing has caused my friend issues when he squares the edges of his workbench top build. As you note the flex is an issue and caused a big issue for him. Fortunately, he knew someone with a Hammer table that squared all the sides the up in less than 10 minutes. Great review. Thank you for sharing.
Great review and real life tests. I have some Ryobi tools that I think are fine for just about any woodworker, like the drill, driver set, the brad nailer, and the small portable circular saw. I use that mainly for cutting down large pieces of plywood, and MDF on the fly when accuracy isn't all that critical.
However when it comes to a track saw, I think you want the best that you can get (afford), because if you pair it with a good track and accessories like a rail square and parallel guides, you can't beat it for repeatable cuts. Works really great when making cabinets and all the parts have to match perfectly. I don't have the Festool model, but I have the Makita, and it is great. Better to save up and get something that you will never regret buying.
I think Ryobi settled with the “budget mindset” on this saw. It’s definitely a good saw but it can’t compete with the other saws. For the price, I don’t think this out performs the WEN at all
This video is a great explanation for why I moved from Ryobi (Rye-oh-bee 😄) to Milwaukee. Ryobi is a fantastic option for the DIYer - and that was me for years! Their tools are amazing for what they cost. The drill, driver, sawzall, etc are quite good!
I hadn't bought a new cordless tool in a while and was starting to thing about woodworking tools like a router and really hesitated to invest more into Ryobi and I'm thrilled I made the change to Milwaukee tools. But they ARE expensive and it's definitely going to be a long road replacing my tools that still work.
I'm rambling. Great video, great review. The M18 track saw kit is on my wish list. 😁
Small point. Milwaukee, Makita, DeWalt are not expensive. The cheaper alternatives are cheap. Go back 30+ years, and quite crude tools cost far more compared to income levels and wider costs of living. We've got a different idea of what is expensive
One trick I learned from Festool about joining tracks is to leave a very small gap between the segments. This makes alignment a lot easier.

I know Ryobi has come a long way, I an still not a total fan but they can be a good starter kit. they are definitely not built for precision.
I have a lot of the One+ tools from Ryobi, and I've noticed one thing over the years - the first iteration of a lot of the products aren't that great, have some things that could be tweaked, and it honestly seems that Ryobi takes that back to the drawing board and improves the tools.
That being said, I really wished they would produce prototypes and send those tools to some sort of "early access" clubs, and maybe even a few UA-camrs such as 731 Woodworks, and take feedback before releasing the first version. I think this would improve not only their first generation of a new tool quite a bit, but would tremendously improve their reputation as well.

Looks like Kreg is the only one that got one basic thing right -- putting the blade on the left. If I were buying, that would be the deciding factor for me.
I agree with your thought about packaging for the reason for the size of the track. Ryobi puts a lot of thought into their packaging. I recently got their 10in chainsaw. t is a small box with the bar protruding from the box. There is a corresponding slot in the box so another one can be placed next to it, and the two bars slide into the slots in the other box to make a smaller overall package for a pallet. It is quite a nice design, and makes me believe it is a very good possibility for the track size.
An HP Multijet fusion will put you in another league, that is some serious industrial kit.
I'm pretty heavily invested in Ryobi and just got the Bora track system for my circular saw. Works perfect and is two 4' sections. I can also get a plate to use a router with it.
I just got it too and I thought it was absolutely terrible. Going back tomorrow. Garbage.

I saw a comparison of the grizzly, shop fox, and kreg. I believe they showed where they were pretty much thd same saw. It has been a few yrs. I may be remembering wrong.
First, I love tablesaws and it is my tool of choice for many things especial with a crosscut sled anda few couple other handy jigs.

I completely agree. Ryobi is for the ENTRY-level DIY person. Having said that, if that DIY person has ANY intentions of going beyond light duty, then they should consider a better track saw so they’re not spending money twice.
I think you’re spot on regarding packaging for 27 1/2 inch tracks, but they should offer a longer tracks for those that want them. Also sucks that they made a proprietary track, but they also designed that track saw so it couldn’t work on anyone else’s anyway.
Why is everyone making such a big deal about riving knives on track saws? No one has ever complained about riving knives on circular saws, but now you have a saw that’s on an even more stable platform than just doing it by hand and people are getting a hard on for riving knife?!?!
Yes, a track saw can replace a tablesaw, but most people don’t go that route. A professional carpenter that also happens to have his own UA-cam channel that has up to this point used a track saw exclusively is Peter Millard. He recently purchased a tablesaw, but it’s not even your typical tablesaw. It’s a cordless trim saw by Festool.

Lastly, it appears that you completely avoid mentioning Makita when you discuss track saws. In my opinion, it is the closest competitor to a Festool with Milwaukee nipping at its heels. For this reason alone, it would be great if you could at least mention them when you talk about track saws.
I have my Empire 2 piece Strait Edge (two 4 foot pieces joined with a 2 screw connector). Use it with my circular saws on jobsites (I do kitchens & bathrooms). Not building cabinets, but plenty of countertops & custom shelves. Cuts straight & true. Maybe not as easy to set up & cut as a track saw.....but $25 at Home Depot & I have the saw. SO...I genuinely don't see the big deal with track saws UNLESS you are doing high end cabinetry & table tops.
Doesn't look like the scoring feature works with the riving knife attached. That track looks bad, too. Proprietary, short, no splinter guard? And I totally agree on the likelihood of having a straight track at 8' with four sections. Oh - do they have any accessories for the track? I can use a router attachment on lots of them with standard tracks, and even Bora has one for their straight edge.
Honestly, I don't see enough value in a low end track saw. If I'm not looking for high precision then I can use a far cheaper straight edge and the circular saw that I already own. This thing doesn't seem like "stepping up" enough from my existing straight edge setup for $300.

Thank you for the video. I was going to purchase this saw tomorrow, but I think I need to look at another product. There are some serious flaws that would prevent me from cutting completely straight.
I broke down and got the Makita track saw last year because i'm in Makita, and its good. I would have been fine with a budget friendly saw, but I just couldn't justify spending a little less and getting a bad product. Ive adopted the "buy once, cry once" mentality lately, and it works.
i own many Ryobi tools and started using Ryobi around 2003 . I was never able to get any of their circular saws to cut a straight line or a clean line in general. Tried even with a clamped straight edge. They are underpowered and , as you stated, the baseplates have too much deflection. For the professional , they are worthless but capable for a DIYer. I love Ryobi kept their battery platform the same , which is why I kept purchasing the newer tools over the years. Not hating on Ryobi at all but there are better performing circular saws of all sizes out there near the same price point. Thanks for the review.
Thanks for the review, Matt. You answered my questions for sure. Going to wait for either version 2.0 or save up for something else. That deflection/wobble producing out of square cuts is troubling. And the riving knife design needs fixing.
Get a corded alternative for a similar price if cost is a big factor. I've been very happy with a corded Makita circular saw that works with a Makita accessory to fit on my Makita track. Total cost is a lot less than that Ryobi.
Even cheaper is Evolution. Many people love that brand. I've been unlucky with their quality control and always returned their stuff
Great review, Matt! I rarely ever get the 1.0 version of anything. And since I’m cheap and already have a circular saw and don’t see a need to have a battery operated track saw, I’ll probably just get the Kreg track for circ saws.
Yeah. Not sure why track saws are as popular as they are when you can just take an existing saw and use it with a track. I get it if you're doing this for a living, but does a dedicated track saw make sense for the vast majority of woodworkers? Maybe I just don't know enough about it :-)

I only use it to break down sheet goods and I got it for $140, battery and all. For what I need it for, it's fine.
Like many others, I have plenty of Ryobi tools. My drill and impact driver have served me well for many years and get more use than anything else in my workshop. That being said, I've too been very hesitant on buying anything that requires precision from them. I *really* hope they take this video as constructive criticism and make their tracksaw better. Not because I want to get one, but because competition drives innovation and prices down on other manufacturers. Can't wait to see what version 2 changes come from this and I really hope you re-review that one if/when it comes out to see what has changed.

Ryobi make great "starter" tools, I have spent many years with them. As my skill improves so do my tools, But seriously it will take some time to get better than most Ryobi tools can manage. From your review I think version 2.0 will be the better buy.
Hello great review, the New WEN Coordless is a better choice in my opinion.
Great video, the local big box stores in my neck of the woods are Menards and they sell a master force power tool line and in the line up they have a corded track saw with 110 inches of track for under $200 and can be purchased online. It’s the only track saw I have ever used but I feel like it’s a great value for a diyer. Would love to see how it compares to others that you have reviewed.

re: the tracks fitting in the box for ease of shopping - product designers /absolutely/ think about those things. and that box is also a/b stackable - flip one around and it mates into the other.
Ryobi's new slogan should be: "Ryobi, it's better than nothing". :D
Thanks for doing this review/comparison. At HD in Canada with the 'tool only' versions of Milwaukee and Ryobi, there is only a $100 difference but the difference between the kits is $380. I don't think it's worth it here to get the Ryobi even if you only have Ryobi tools. If a track saw is something you need or want I would save up a bit more and go Milwaukee.

Tablesaw vs Tracksaw; it’s all opinion so I thought I would add mine. You can definitely use a tracksaw instead of a tablesaw. Festool has the MFT system, Kreg has their system. It’s different, but once you learn it you can do everything you can do on a tablesaw. It just comes down to preference. If you are already a woodworker with experience using a tablesaw, I do not think you’ll ever wholly convert over to a tracksaw, you’ll only use the tracksaw where it truly excels. However, if you are new and choose just the tracksaw and learn all the techniques, you’ll never need a tablesaw. I have seen some amazing woodworkers that do everything with a tracksaw and MFT system.
Peter from 10 minute workshop shows this off but he is adding a table saw soon
Depends on what you use the table saw for. You are not likely to cut tenons, finger joints or dovetails on track saw as an example. Material breakdown tracks are quite versatile.

@M Woody The amount of jigging to do that safely is ridiculous. The MFT is not just a track saw At that point you could have spent the jig money on a cheap table saw or hand cut faster. Yes at some point you can do anything if you contort enough.
@@ehisey I don’t think so. Think about how you cut those by hand and apply that to an MFT, dogs, track. It’s actually pretty simple once you think it thru. And like I’ve said, I’ve it done and it’s pretty cool and perfectly safe. It’s just not what you are used too or how you’ve learned to do things and so it seems foreign and wrong.
It’s SO obvious when companies hire designers and engineers to create their products, that do not actually USE those products. Ryobi’s product creators don’t seem to do any woodworking. Thank you for this review. I won’t be buying any more Ryobi power tools
Dust collection: cut down a thick nap paint roller and attach to the dust port. This will provide a landing for many size shop vac hoses.

As I've mentioned before about my thoughts on RYE-OBI (haha), their tools definitely have a purpose in the shop. Some of their tools, not so much. But it comes down to "Purpose".
If I were to ever have a purpose for a track saw, it very most likely would be for cutting down plywood. But, I use a RYE-OBI corded Circular saw and a clamped down level for that.
Also as I've mentioned before....Ideas for future tool reviews...Dust collection hoses and more importantly, CONNECTORS. Where to get them, sizes, types of hoses....I like that green one you use but I'm sure that's a shiny penny and all my pennies are dull.
I'd very much like to see a video about hoses and connectors, especially those little tiny S.O.B's that fit onto a palm sander (Dewalt) and the back of the chop saw (Dewalt).

That's exactly why I took the plunge into Festool. You just can't get a Rolls Royce for the price of a Datsun. Even for the DIY starting out buy the best you can afford you will start by enjoying your new hobby and not starting off by hating it before you get started. Watch Matt he will point you in the right direction for your budget 😁

Another great review. I'll be sticking with my kreg. I honestly have no need to upgrade but, I still do. Have you ever considered reviewing the bosch option? I have a few bosch products and couldn't be happier. I have their answer to the rotex and it's probably my favorite tool in my growing shop. Sentiment plays a part in that but it performs outstanding. Anyway, great video, selfishly, I'd love to see some more bosch reviews, sanders compared with festools, miter saw, and track saw. Keep it up Matt

The corded Bosch is great, for some reason they downsized the cordless version and it's max cut is less than 2". 140mm cordless blade vs 165mm blade on the corded. Cordless is also lower power, ideal for sheet goods but will struggle in deep hardwood cuts.

Rule of thumb I have for ryobi.. Their battery line up is amazing. If its a battery tool, Drills, rotary tool, nail gun.. then absolutely use Ryobi.. If its got a cord or needs dust collection, go elsewhere.
Hey 731, I remember when you where first starting out your channel has came along way. Not only video editing and quality but tools and stuff. I see you have a track saw from almost every tool manufacturer. I don't have one so if your truly not happy with a saw that was given to you because you have a number of better ones I would be happy to take it off your hands and I'll pay shipping. Give you more space and take the worse track saw of your collections off your hands. I'll pay shipping lol. Because your worse is better then not having one at all.
I had a Wen 7 1/4" corded version just to see if I would use it on the job site. Then I noticed myself using it enough I bought a new Makita 36v cordless.Videos I watch of other people on UA-cam compared it to the festool. Not a big 18v Milwaukee fan
Man I'm tempted but the 4 track pieces are scary. But I truly want it for breaking down plywood and half inch sheets.
The new Wen cordless looks better to me. Brushless motor, batteries included, works with Festool/Powertec tracks. I'll be looking for your review. Thanks!
Ridgid announced they will have a track saw sometime this year. I'm trying to hold out for that one since I have so many Ridgid batteries, otherwise Makita might get my money.
You should also look at the Triton TS.
I've recently bought the Grizzly track saw, and I'm pretty happy with it, especially for only $250. You should test it :)
re: Harbor Freight - I like their tool-holding bar magnets. Also, their light/medium duty one hand clamps are not the best, but serviceable.
Try Metabo instead. You’ll love it.

If you haven't looked at it yet. The Dewalt 60v track saw is pretty good for the price.
I've been using clampdown 8'+ aluminum tracks for years to rip-cut 8' sheets of plywood, all with excellent results (assuming I'm paying attention and not going faster than my 7.25" saw wants to go). What, if any, are the advantages of a separate track saw? BTW- I've got a table saw for rip cutting thicker lumber, and a 12" sliding miter for cross cutting to about 16".
WEN has a cordless version tracksaw!!! Please review. And…I went with a Kreg ACS based on your review. It works perfectly for me.

Can you do an updated comparison with a Kreg track saw?
I wonder do blades make a difference. I swapped my ryobi blade on my brushless saw and it was a crazy difference. Would a Diablo blade make the cuts easier or better? Less bogging?
WEN has a cordless track saw and WEN uses the “standard” track design (festool, makita and powertec)
If you buy a track pack, does it come with 2 sets of “joinery” bars, so you can connect the two 55” sections?

The question isn't why they put only one of those clamps in the package. It's why they put even one. Of course since it's a larger size you can't use can't use normal track clamps, so, sigh
From experience I can say that if you try to use that kind of clamp to hold your track down you're going to spend much more time setting up.

18v as my other tools is lovely idea , but that proprietary track is just dam kick in the nuts, I will stick with my Makita 110v and 118" rail, I wish that 55" rail got European dimension
