A battery operated track saw is key for me. The ability to break down sheet goods in the store parking lot is absolutely a game changer.
This is why I bought the DeWalt 60v. No regrets. Great saw. Some don't like the proprietary track, but it will work on Festool tracks aswell.
One of the major complaints I had with the Kreg plunge is that there was just too much play in the track, and I couldn’t get it tight enough to eliminate the play yet still being able to slide along the track. Unfortunately that caused a lot of my longer cuts to be off in the center about 1/16 of an inch. Ended up springing for the MAKITA, and I couldn’t be happier. For the extra few bucks it’s worth it.
Your original review AND the fact that it’s built for right hand use, are the reasons I bought and use my Kreg track saw on every project. no regrets.
I have used the kreg track saw for several years. As a home hobbiest it works fine for me. I will say the customer service of kreg is top notch. My first saw was having a problem so I took it apart and could not get it working again. I called kreg and told them I took it apart to find the problem and wanted to find out if they offered a discount for a replacement. THEY SENT ME A BRAND NEW SAW. I was not asking for it and reminded them I took it apart, THEY STILL SENT ME A NEW SAW.
In addition, I really like the saw blade on the left as I am right handed. It is natural to look at the line of cut and being on the left you are far more comfortable operating it.
They're actually pretty close in price. The Milwaukee is available right now from Home depot for $400 and it comes free with your choice of the 31" or 55" track + clamps. I chose the 55" and with my home depot pro xtra rewards 10% coupon I paid $380 all in($420 without the 10% off). Kreg shows $460 so after tax you'd be almost $500. If you keep an eye on sales then you can definitely get yourself an M18 8.0 and charger in the $100 range. This prices both options very competitively at ~$500. Can't ignore the adaptive system though. That would be a big consideration if I was in a shop.
I agree. For those on a truly tight budget, the Wen saw is the best. Then you can upgrade to a Milwaukee for slightly more than this Kreg, while still using the same tracks.
@@JohnC1 If you're on a tight budget and also need a regular circular saw, most of the blade right Makita XGT circular saws are compatible with their tracks while also being a regular circular saw. All the way up to the 10-1/4" guy.
Standalone they're not cheap, but for some folks it covers 2 tools.
Have you considered doing a review of the corded Makita track saw?

I saw a deal on the Milwaukee track saw today. Bare tool for $399. But, you get a 55" rail and rail clamp set free with it. If you already have their batteries you're all set. But, you can usually score a deal on a battery and charger sometimes too.
I just got the festool TSV-60
The thing is a beast! Splinter guards are a thing of the past.
I had the Kreg ACS system and loved it. I only sold it because even folded up it took up too much space in my very small shop. I had to call Kreg support 2x once for missing parts and 2nd time one year in when the saw begin giving me some issues. Both times Support was incredible and they quickly sent me out the missing parts and a replacement saw. I would buy the Kreg track saw again over the others due to the great service they provided.
I bought the corded version of the Makita. It came with a very nice Systainer box like the Festool saws come with. If you can jump the expense gap to the Makita you won't regret it.
Excellent Review!! I have owned the Kreg Plunge Saw AND The Adaptive Cutting System for five years. I have cut a ton of plywood with the Plunge Saw, Two tracks joined, and parallel guides. It is an excellent saw. One thing you didn't mention is, the Kreg saw is easy to use for right handers. You can cut and walk along the side of your wood as you cut. No reaching across and the offcut just drops off. Additionally, Kreg customer service is excellent. They have been very good to me. I have a lot of Kreg stuff, and I told them what I own, so they gave me some free parts. I also have their mobile project center, wheich they discontinued. The feet on mine wore out and lost a screw that holds it together and allows it to unfold. The guy said they were discontinuing it, so he sent me a new one. Meanwhile, I found a screw in my collection and fixed my original, so now I have two, which is great for a lot of things. I have nothing to say bad about the Kreg saw, but their accessories that allow repeatable cuts of full sheets are flimsy. They should be made of metal and the adjustments should be precise. FYI, the dust bag holds the dust from a 96" cut. Then you have to dump it. I have a routine worked out. The Adaptive Cutting System does not replace a table saw. I thought it would, so I bought it. It didn't and I bought a Metabo saw with wheels, which works in my 2 stall garage. I cut my pieces to rough dimensions with the track saw, then run them through the table saw for perfection.
I've had the Kreg for years, and I really like it, especially for plywood work. It is definitely under-powered for hardwood, but it eats 3/4 ply no problem. If you are on a budget and mostly doing cabinet work, the Kreg is a no-brainer purchase. Kreg also has ridiculously good customer support -- they sent me a new $250 part for another one of their items just off an e-mail to them, TWO years after I bought it and it partially failed. I had to pull teeth with DeWalt customer support to get my $700 planer fixed with factory defects!
Just got this today new with the track for $300 - such great value - and it came with a bag! Already putting it to use breaking down sheets for a new pantry. The only thing I have to keep reminding myself of is which way to set the track to get the 1/8 on the correct side of the cut.

love my kreg ACS with this saw. it uses the same size blades as festool so you have options, like the freud ripping blade which is great for breaking down lumber

Great video Matt. I bought the Kreg several months ago and you are right on with your comments. I found the cord/hose plate to get in my way more than it helped. My bad, first cut with 3/4 ply on the floor with 3/4 foam under it, I did not get the depth tight enough. Yep, got a new blade from my local dealer. Otherwise it did a great job busting down 4 sheets. Thanks for validating my purchase.
I bought the Kreg Adaptive Cutting System for a project I had, making a couple of cabinets onsite for a laundromat remodel, it was great for that. The saw is part of that system and the fact that the track is 62" is a great bonus, the reason is because it's needed for the system to function as designed. I liked it so much, I added two more pieces of track , they're reasonably priced ($99 each) just like all the pieces. You can find the saw for $299 all day long. The rest of the competition can be twice that. The drawback is it's not compatible with other tracks. However, I've never needed more than the two pieces of track. It's a great value! I'm going to buy another Kreg saw to keep a saw with the ACS and one to use around the shop.
I got a battery powered Dewalt track Saw. And I like it.
I bought the guide kit and used it with my old Craftsman saw, works very well. With another kit I can cut a full 8 feet.
I've had my Kreg for 2 1/2 years, it's a great saw.
I bought the complete ACS 3100 system and really like it. Was a bit of a pain to assemble and the manuals could be better but the cuts are great and accurate.
Great review, Matt~! I was just going to say that I've seen really good reviews for the Wen track saw. A couple of friends have purchased them and are very happy with them. Didn't know if you ran across it in your research for Kreg comparison purposes.
For some time now, I've been toying with the idea of to a plunge/track saw and have done some preliminary comparisons while using Kreg's Accu-Cut attached to my standard circular saw. It does a great job, but I think it's time to graduate and have been leaning toward the Kreg. However, since my Accu-Cut purchase several years ago, I've also boarded the Festool & Milwaukee trains, so that kind of muddies the waters a bit. I know that they're definitely not in the same price range as Kreg, but my wife being my enabler promotes the philosophy of "buy nice tools and you only cry once." (Sorry guys, she doesn't have a sister~! 😀) She thinks the Festool green is cute~! LOL
In Australia, the for the Makita track saw, you can buy the tracks at 1400mm (~55"), 1900mm (~75") , and 3000mm (~10') lengths.
I bought the Ridgid and haven’t looked back. Only downside is no case, put I picked up a medium Ridgid work box and it fits perfect.
I was never aware of Menards' brand tracksaw until i saw it in the store. It felt really good as far as the fit and finish. It was mostly metal. I think this would be a good budget saw to do a review on. It is the Materforce tracksaw kit. I think its 199, and Menards always does the 11% rebate so they can get it cheaper. It came with carring case and track.
I had the Kreg saw for a couple years before selling it. It shines as a system with the table, but I feel it falls short as a stand alone saw. The proprietary track and deflection were my primary reasons for selling it. I emailed Kreg with a video of the deflection, and they said it was normal. I ended up purchasing a Festool TS55 and couldn’t be happier. Not knocking Kreg. I have a lot of their stuff, but This saw just fell short. They should have at least made it fit the Festool track.
I adapted my Kreg plunge saw to a ripcut works great Kreg should come up with an adapter kit to do this, so you can use the plunge saw or a circular saw!
Had a kreg track saw for a couple of years . Like most folks I only use it occasionally. To me it seems like a good deal for the money, at least for me

Interesting that the Amazon listing for the Kreg track saw (listed in your details) shows it as a 12 amp, 120 volt, variable speed motor. You said that it wasn't variable when comparing to the Milwaukee. ??

One correction for you Matt - unless something has changed since I bought my Kreg a few years ago … My Kreg saw does have variable speed. As much as I love my Kreg, I’m actually thinking of going to the Festool TS 75 - for 2 reasons. 1. semi standard tracks ands 2. Larger blade/cutting depth.
Still need to review the WEN CT1274 7.25" corded track saw. Head and shoulders better than the CT1065 6.25" saw you did review.
My Kreg track saw experience did not go well. I guess I needed to add the blade width to the cut. oK, figured that out. The hardest part was keeping the track from moving when making a cut. After 1 project, never did make a straight cut. Then noticed the foam runners on the back of the track started coming out of their slots and finally started to tear. Maybe I just didn't know really how to use this thing, but it was a disaster from start to finish. Finally returned the saw and track to Lowe's. I'm glad they took it back. Maybe someday I may look into a Makita track saw, but for now, its just a table saw for me.
Tell TSO to make the square for the Ridgid...please! Lol...I keep checking and still not offered. Great vid.. love my Ridgid though!
in the meantime you can use the 3,5,5 method to make a square out of mdf or plywood as big as you wish from scrap wood that will get you in tight tolerances. until you get the machined version. just an idea .
I ended up buying the Wen specifically because it could use "standard" tracks. If I use the saw more than I do now I will probably upgrade to a Makita corded one. Yeah it's not as nice as the others but it does the job.
Don't buy corded. It's not worth any savings even just using it once per year. Get one of the cordless Makita models. They're insanely powerful and butter smooth. Nothing besides Festool and Maffel even compares.
I’ve never used it, however after Drew included it in a video comparing track saws I was left feeling that Kreg needs a redesign. Its blade left and has a riving knife but the motor seems inappropriate for solid lumber
What do you mean by inappropriate?
Would be great if you could review the bosch track saw. Especially seeing if it can fit other tracks too. Mostly because its more expensive but on sale quite a bit. But is that worth it>
Love your videos and know you’ve reviewed several track saws, but there’s one that many hold in high regard missing….Makita. I know several compare it to the Festool and Milwaukee. Would love to see you run it through its paces as well
I have the Wen 7 1/4 corded track saw with the newer 110" tracks. Price for both about $200. It's no Festool, but I can't find anything wrong with it. I did remove the kickback pawl because it was just a pain in the butt, and I have never had any hint of a kickback. Note that the 100" tracks and the 110" tracks are about the same price.
I have used a 2x4 and clamps skill or jig saw .Not worth the $ but your review was very good !

Based on your tool deal links both Toolnut and Homedepot have the Milwaukee with a single 55" track and clamps on sale. I was thinking, the Milwaukee saw and track when placed on the Homedepot cart come up as separate items so I assume they are hackable. If one returns the track and purchases the Wen 110" track it is only $70, the Milwaukee track being listed in cart as $114, so a savings of just under $45.
The $45 dollar difference can go toward batteries and charger that an individual can either wait for a sale, or can do an additional hack - like I see HD has a deal where an 8amp battery and charger can be picked up for $185 with purchase of an additional item - that will lower the price of entry AND get a sweet deal being able to cut a full sheet of plywood.
Basically, if one is willing to either wait or do some hacks, one can nearly get the Milwaukee at about the same price as the Kreg if you were to get the the additional track from Kreg.
At the current price of the Milwaukee (at the time of this writing) the only real issue is the batterie(s) that you might be able to "hack" yourself to a better saw.

You should check out the Tool Theory track square. I have it for the Kreg saw and it works great!
The Kreg is (or at least was) variable speed. My Kreg that i bought almost 2 years ago is variable speed

i have the kreg but for me i now wish i opted for something cordless, with standard track/accessory compatibility. those are personal preferences to be fair

It's true that there is too much information in the instructions booklet, but you made me giggle. 😂 forget about the instructions. Let's jump into .
For a true hobbyist, my opinion is to just use the circular saw you already have with a straight edge. Have a few extra bucks? Get a clamping straight edge. Cheapest I've used is the one you can get at Harbor Freight. Have a few extra bucks and cut sheet goods regularly? Get the budget-est versions. Wen, MasterForce. Those. Have a little more dollars? The Kreg is my favorite of the mid tier saws. 62" tracks and the only " right hended track saw" on the market are the selling points.
I just made my Makita 18 volt saw into a track saw and added the little dust port to it. Best thing is that my homemade track has the blade trapped on both sides for no chip out. Btw it hangs on the wall 99.9% of the time because I break down sheet goods on my table saw like a boss.
How did you do that? I have a Makita cordless saw and the track saw systems do look very nifty to me. But I can’t justify the cost.
1/2” mdf and 1/4” plywood. There are stops at both ends and the 1/4” plywood traps the saw from side to side. Underneath is some 3/4” plywood that is square to the mdf or cut. The mdf is about 12”x63” this is long enough for the saw to be in the track before the cut on a 49” wide cut. Wish I could send a picture. But the powers to be probably wouldn’t want that. Hope this made some sense.
I asked Kreg about the bag today and was told they stopped including it with saws purchased after November 2023.
The kreg does have a speed adjustment. It's right at the bottom of the hand grip
well, that's a first I can say.
The blade of the Kreg is on the correct side of the saw. That is a nice win.
I've heard great things about the Makita, but it doesn't have a riving knife and I don't want to pay for the festool. What do you think Matt, think the Kreg could hold up?

My guess is that they are not interested in investing in the 240v realm of tools

A track saw is quite a specialty item and honestly not even necessary most of the time. Especially for someone trying to start out or w a limited budget.
If your in the market for a track saw, ask yourself why you need it and if other tools can take care of that job. I feel like 75% of people just want a track saw cause they're cool but only 25% use them properly/regularly.
That being said it might be better to just wait for a sale and shell out the extra $ if you can.
Need to know! The dog holes on Kreg stuff are a different size than those on Festool. So how does that work out? I am looking at the small ready made Kreg bench top. Can you please tell me what quick clamps fit on the Kreg rail? Not including Kregs own non quick clamp.
Does Kreg make a square (TSO like) for the guide rail? I looked around but didn't see one. Would like one for easy cross-cuts, but the TSO one is pretty expensive.
I’ve had the Kreg track saw with the ACS for years and am quite happy with it. It does what a track saw should accurately, safely, and with great dust collection. And with the ACS it really can be used in place of a table saw for many precise cutting jobs, like the Festool MFT but MUCH cheaper. I used it exclusively for almost every cut until I finally got a table saw but I still pull out the ACS for some larger cuts because my jobsite table saw has limited capacity. And of course for breaking down sheet goods a track saw is the only way to go (unless you have the budget and room for a large sliding table saw.
Can the acs be used with other tracks/tracksaws or do you need to use the kreg? It’s the perfect folding table for my garage. But would like a cordless saw for it

Oh, boy; I wish Milwaukee would render a 120v version of their track saw! I mean : they’re doing it with their miter saws (but, yeah, I suppose that this is due to the fact that the company had designed the high voltage one, before the battery’s.), but I anticipate that Mkee will slowly kill almost all their high voltage machinery. In that case, this would be a no-brainer for me. I mean : as I my work is mostly done on thin wood and I like lightness’s efficiency, I quite embraced the M12 platform… to an absolute enjoyment of use. I don’t want to have to get the M18 platform.

I bought the Ridgid a while ago based on your review... I was team green prior and now I have a whole bunch of orange tools (with stemless batteries)... question you can answer for me, will the TSO square work on the Ridgid track?
After you cut the splinter guard, on the track, do you have to change the guard and cut it again is you change the blade?
Curious why you leave out Makita during track saw reviews and discussions. I would put it right up there with the Milwaukee.
I question if a riving knife is really needed for a track saw? Not saying it isn’t. I have never experienced the need while breaking down plywood.

I always enjoy your videos. I was confused about your comments about a 45 deg. cut. You didn't try it on the thick walnut, but I wonder how it cuts on 3/4" plywood. Would that work okay? I can't crank my table saw to 45 deg. and would like to cut French cleats. Would this saw do that? Thanks for all you do!
Oh yeah, it'll do 45's in plywood just fine.
The saw would most likely do the walnut at 45 degree since the motor (adaptive load) will ramp up as needed under load. There are better saw blades that outperform the decent stock one which certainly would make all the difference.
Are you ever going to review the Makita?
Makita makes a track saw? 🤣 I don't know which one to get. 36v or 40v? Which one?
Review the 36V. The 40 has a smidge more power, but the 18V battery line is far more common so it will relate to more people.
…or just do the corded one. Then it’s an apples to apples comparison. Though I don’t think corded is with the savings compared to when the cordless goes on sale.
My one complaint is it won't hold a third Allen wrench that comes with the track joining kit.
Not sure if you have Menards stores in your area, but they have a masterforce track saw that is 6.5", comes with 110" of track, 2 different blades, and costs 200 bucks. I'd love to see your review on it
Bought it about 2 years ago. Worked for a few small jobs but was not happy with the 4 pieced together tracks and underpowered saw. Finally got the festool TS55.. You only really appreciate the difference when you use both.
@sethhernly6598 I'm just getting in to wood working so 200 bucks for a track saw seems like a bargain, especially for what it comes with. But it sounds like I'd be better off getting something a bit nicer

I still think, at lest with me. i deal with cutting plywood mostly. I use a Kreg AccuCut and a circular saw with a laser. to prevent any play. works good. I don't see the benefit for me to spend the money for a track saw other then make my wallet lighter.

Not sure why you would use a tack saw to rip hardwoods, or softwoods. They're made for plywood no? I bought my first track saw a few months ago, a WEN track saw, and have used it several times now with great success. Use a good blade, dust port connected to my shop vac cyclone system, put duct tape over the arbor opening, and very little dust and smooth cuts. I see no reason except honoring a name brand, to pay $400 to $1000. But everyone has their favorites.

Track saws obviously excel at cutting sheet good, but they can be extremely helpful when trying to establish a straight edge on a longer piece of hardwood. They can definitely save you time at the jointer and can be quite useful for cutting large solid wood panels to size (length or width) vs wrestling it across your table saw
Newbie question: What is the purpose for a scribe mode?
Helps prevent tear out
Cuts about 1/16” into the wood to prevent tear out on the top. Once you scribe the length of the wood, go back and cut the full depth. Makes for a much cleaner cut

I'm poor and cheap so if you ever feel the need to give away one of your dozens budget track saw's, id be more then willing to take it off your hands. I would even pay the shipping for you !!!!!

It might be worth being aware you have an international audience and that not all products are available or compatible in other countries.
This seems like a great budget track saw, but I think you put too much importance to a riving knife. My Makita doesn’t have one. I’ve had it pinch on pressure treated 2x12s and I don’t think a riving knife would have made any difference. Either the blade pinches and stalls or in kicks back in very rare circumstances. But when it does kick, I don’t think a riving knife would have stopped it and the base just immediately springs down to cover the blade. This isn’t a table saw (where a riving knife is REQUIRED). Even though it has a spinning blade, the dynamics are different.
So yes, this is a great saw, but I think you disqualify other options because of the over-emphasis on the riving knife.
